M
any people know that Montana is home to the one-of-a-kind Yellowstone National Park, a geological Mecca full of brightly colored hot pots and steaming geysers. It’s also home to an abundance of wildlife, from the infamous grizzly bear to the more dainty antelope. But did you know that Montana was once home to some of the largest dinosaurs in the world? In fact, more dinosaur fossils have been discovered in Montana than in any other state. This is only one of the many things to learn about at the Museum of the Rockies (MOR). Located on the outskirts of the Montana State University campus in Bozeman, MOR is the hub of Rocky Mountain history, with exhibits that take visitors back through the dinosaur era, into the history and science of Yellowstone, up to the sky through a number of educational and entertaining planetarium shows, and back down to earth with a living history farm. It also hosts a number of internationally acclaimed, high profile rotating exhibits, many of them with interactive displays. “One of our goals is to engage everyone in lifelong learning,” explains Angie Weikert, MOR’s Education and Public Programs Director. “In order to achieve this we try to bring as much of the world as we can to the museum.” Recently listed by the travel website gogobot.com as one of the top 15 places in the nation to bring your kids, MOR is family friendly to the max, while also being equally as entertaining for adults. A world-class dinosaur research facility, the museum has been made famous by the work of paleontologist Jack Horner (a scientific advisor on all “Jurassic Park” films) and his research team. The Siebel Dinosaur Complex features one of the largest dinosaur fossil collections in the world, along with multi-media exhibits about Montana digs and dinos. “Dr. Horner’s work let’s us all look into the fantasy world of dinosaurs, which engages the imagination,” Weikert says, “especially for kids.” Speaking of kids, the MOR’s Martin Children’s Discovery Center is a hands-on initiation into the wonders of Yellowstone National Park for infants and kids up to 8

year olds. The little ones can set up a camp, fish off a bridge (and measure their catch), watch a geyser erupt, create a mock meal in a mock Old Faithful Lodge, make crafts, and climb up a fire lookout, among many other activities. “The goal with that space is to instill an appreciation of the natural environment to the next generation,” Weikert explains. “It’s their world, and they own it, and when they do explore Yellowstone National Park, they can have a better grasp of it.” Montana history is another focus, with permanent displays about anything from the first automobiles to Native American culture. Then there’s the Living History Farm out back, a working farm and a re-creation of the homesteading era in the West, open throughout the summer. The rotating exhibit is currently a feature on geckos, with more than 75 different live varieties and interactive displays about their diversity and habitats (running through Sept 8). In late September, the MOR will feature two coinciding fine art exhibits: “Tough by Nature,” portraits of Western women and “America the Beautiful,” black and white photographs of the American West by Clyde Butcher. With something for everyone, the MOR is a must-do on the Montana bucket list for visitors and residents alike. “This diversity allows for folks to pick out what inspires them and motivates them,” Weikert says. “Some come in and want something educational and content driven, while others just want entertainment. We cover it all under one roof.”

ave you ever teed off at 7,500 feet? It’s a spectacular experience, even for the most well traveled and ultra experienced golfers out there. Not only does your ball travel farther—because the air is less dense, and therefore creates less friction—but you are truly spending a day in the great outdoors, surrounded by nothing more than trees, perhaps a herd of elk, and some looming mountain peaks on all sides as if they are coaching your swing. With four courses in Big Sky, this is Rocky Mountain golfing at its finest, with the highest elevation course being The Reserve at Moonlight Basin (7,500 ft.). Come down 1,000 feet, and your ball will still soar under the gaze of Lone Mountain at Big Sky Resort’s golf course in the Meadow Village, the closest public golf course in Montana to Yellowstone National Park. Here, just like the non-existent lift lines and wide-open, un-crowded slopes that Big Sky Resort is known for in the winter months, most days golfers can enjoy similarly uncrowded greens.

Here lies the well-maintained sprawling green grass that is the Arnold Palmer-designed public Big Sky Golf Course. The greens wind along the banks of the Middle Fork of the Gallatin River and sit perched underneath the towering Lone Peak. “It’s classic link-style golfing, with each hole linked to the next for easy flow,” explains Chapman. “It brings you back around again and utilizes less space.”

When you think of a public golf course being somewhat busy, think again. The Big Sky Golf Course is rarely in bottleneck form and has a personalized community feel to it, with a pro shop, a golf pro who teaches regular clinics, and community tournaments throughout the season. It’s also home to the beloved Bunker Bar & Grill, a casual fare hangout with indoor and outdoor seating.
“It’s really unique because it genuinely fits into the landscape,” explains Mike Wilcynski, Director of Operations for Moonlight Club. “We didn’t move a lot of dirt, but instead took the natural landscape that we have here and put some holes in where they fit.”
“You’re golfing in a beautiful place, with a mountain-meadow style layout, views of the peak, and a stream running through it,” Chapman says.
Four drainages exist within the 1,200-acre course, and they have been carefully monitored. “We had a large footprint to work with, which allowed us to maintain the wildlife corridors and keep most of the landscape intact,” Wilcynski says. “Golf is there and everything is coexisting.”
