YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK A perfect day in Yellowstone National Park by Corinne Garcia
T
here are many reasons why Yellowstone is the nation’s first national park and also one of the most visited. It’s like no other place on earth literally...
With much of it sitting inside an ancient volcanic caldera, Yellowstone is home to 10,000 geothermal features, with more than 75 percent of the world’s geysers, including the tallest, called Grand Geyser, and of course the most famous, Old Faithful. There are bubbling pots of mud, brightly colored hot springs, and steam shooting out through little holes in the earth’s crust. These thermal features are part of Yellowstone’s allure, and what makes this park so unique, but there’s so much more. Yellowstone National Park is a great example of nature in its rawest form. There are wide-open spaces, mountains in just about every direction, towering waterfalls, burn areas from some prominent wildfires, and abundant and varied wildlife, including bears, elk, wolves, bison, antelope, and deer just to name a few.

Family vacations don’t get much more interesting and adventurous than those to Yellowstone National Park, and many people find themselves visiting multiple times to escape into the natural world and learn more about the geologic wonders. Big Sky, Montana, just 48 miles from the West Entrance, is the perfect base camp for Yellowstone excursions and one of the
best-kept secrets. After time spent in the park, Big Sky is respite from the crowds, with mountain views, a variety of dining options, unlimited outdoor adventures, spas, and more. It’s the perfect place to return to after a busy day in the Park. Some park visitors leave from Big Sky and drive different park loops for day trips, making it back in time to have an evening barbecue. Others stay in Big Sky at the front and back end of their Yellowstone trips, enjoying Park accommodations such as the historic Old Faithful Inn.
Here are some “hot spots” along one of the loops that can be easily accessed from your Big Sky base camp for a long day trip:
Norris Geyser Basin From West Yellowstone, head north to Norris Geyser Basin, known as “the hottest, oldest, and most dynamic of Yellowstone’s thermal areas.” Porcelain Basin, Back Basin, and One Hundred Springs Plain are all very different tours through the area. Porcelain Basin has a boardwalk and dirt trail leading you through the ¾-mile self-guided tour. Back Basin is a more wooded, 1.5-mile
walk around scattered hot pots and thermal features. Due to dangerous surroundings, One Hundred Springs Plain should be traveled only on a guided tour. The Norris Geyser Basin Museum, located ¼ mile east of Norris Junction just off the Grand Loop Road, features an ongoing exhibit about the thermal and geological features and wildlife.
Canyon Village The biggest highlight of the Canyon area, and a mustsee on any Yellowstone tour, is the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, a 20-mile long, deep canyon carved out by the Yellowstone River with far reaching views, many of which have been captured in paintings and well-known photographs over the years. From the Canyon Visitor Center, you can drive a one-way scenic route toward the Lower Falls, stopping at different viewpoints (Artist Point, Inspiration Point, and Grand View) and interpretive stations along the way.
Tower-Roosevelt From Canyon, head north, over Dunraven Pass to Tower Fall, the 132-foot waterfall at Tower Creek,
and another landmark site in the park. A painting of the waterfall by Thomas Moran, an artist who documented many Yellowstone sites through his work before Yellowstone was established, played a crucial role in the designation of Yellowstone as a national park in 1872. Other highlights in the Tower area include Specimen Ridge, with the largest number of petrified trees in the world. For an easily accessible view of a petrified tree, check out The Petrified Tree, near the Lost Lake trailhead. Calcite Springs are hot springs that can be spotted along the stretch of road that follows the Yellowstone River, with brilliantly colored cliffs and wild gorges, a popular hangout for bighorn sheep.
Tower to Mammoth The 18-mile drive to Mammoth travels through Blacktail Deer Plateau, an area spotted with lakes, ponds, waterfalls and wildlife. Mammoth has always served as park headquarters. The red-roofed buildings scattered about are part of Historic Fort Yellowstone, built in stages between 1891 and 1909 to house the Cavalry sent in to manage the park before the National Park Service was established. Mammoth Hot Springs is the
main attraction in this area. The spectacular, manytiered, limestone pools are decorated with intense colors, creating an unforgettable backdrop. Before Mammoth’s hot mineral pools were protected, visitors used to soak in them to relieve ailments.
Mammoth to Norris Some highlights of this 21-mile stretch include Golden Gate Canyon with views of the old stagecoach road built for visitors passing through, named by the construction crew in 1883-84. See Bunson Peak (elevation 8,564 ft.) off to your left. Sheepeater Cliffs is a picnic area with views of the jutting rock walls. There is a good walk that brings you in for a closer look. Obsidian Cliffs and Roaring Mountain are both great viewpoints on your left before you reach Norris. From Norris, you can head back to West Yellowstone and on to Big Sky to continue your adventure, or to simply relax. â–Ł
