Hayes says. “That way, they can click out of their skis, and they’re immediately in spa world.” Marc’s ski locker room is located right off of a sprawling deck that steps right down to the ski run. “After skiing, the first place we hit is the deck,” Marc explains. “On a sunny day, we relax there and take off a few layers, which is really nice.” But both Julie and Marc agree that there’s more to a ski locker room than just organization and location, there are some key comforts that can make them exceptional. all together, and it can dry overnight.”
HEATED FLOORING Radiant floor heating is common practice these days, and a must-have for ski lockers. “We have heated flooring throughout the home, but it’s especially nice in the lockers room,” Julie says. “When the ski socks hit the stone it’s nice and toasty.” Hayes notes that heated floors also dry quickly, which is essential for a room full of wet ski equipment. Boot & glove dryers. The Belz enjoys a boot dryer that holds up to 10 pair of ski boots, along with a rack for drying gloves. Hayes explains that these are often custom made to fit the room and the number of skiers they need to accommodate at one time.

Bigger is Better: The Newly Expa

ANY OF ThOSe who have experienced skiing at Big Sky and Moonlight Basin understand that they’ve discovered one of the bestkept secrets in the West. With the most skiable terrain in the U.S., not only is there a huge variety—from long, well groomed cruisers to steep chutes off Lone Peak—but there’s also an average of 33 feet of annual snowfall and virtually no lift lines. The area truly lives up to its name as the Biggest Skiing in America.
So it may be hard to believe that the Biggest Skiing in America just got bigger, in just about every way. And it just happens to fall on Big Sky Resort’s 40th anniversary, celebrated this winter. Over the past summer, Big Sky Resort owners Boyne Resorts and Boston-based Crossharbor Capital teamed up to buy Moonlight Basin and The Club at Spanish Peaks, making Big Sky Resort the singular largest ski resort in the U.S. Not only will this big change affect the housing market and expand
the job opportunities in Big Sky, but it will also open up a whole new world of skiing.
The Big Background Although these three ski areas have now become a united front, each one has its own unique roots in the Big Sky area.
Big Sky Resort The late NBC newscaster Chet huntley, a Montana native, originally developed Big Sky Resort. The Michigan-based Boyne Resorts took Big Sky Resort in 1976, and within the past 37 years they have greatly expanded the ski access and infrastructure. The addition of the Lone Peak Tram in 1995, which takes skiers and riders up to the summit of Lone Peak for some of the most difficult terrain in the country, expanded the resort by more than 50 percent. Today it’s known as a world-class ski resort.
Moonlight Basin Moonlight Basin was conceived after three partners, Lee Poole, Joe Vujovich, and Keith Brown, purchased 25,000
anded Biggest Skiing in America acres in the Jack Creek drainage, on the north side of Lone Mountain. Once owned by a lumber company, they put a lot of time into rehabilitating the land and protecting wildlife corridors through preservation efforts before selling lots for development. In 2003, Moonlight Basin opened as an independent ski area on the north side of Lone Peak, eventually adding six chairlifts, and becoming known as a popular destination area and locals’ ski mountain.
The Biggest Skiing in America Big Sky Resort and Moonlight Basin eventually joined forces by selling Big Sky Resort-Moonlight Basin interconnect lift ticket, which together created The Biggest Skiing in America, meaning it was the most skiable acreage in the U.S. This allowed skiers access to both ski areas, but the resorts remained independently owned and operated.
The Club at Spanish Peaks The Club at Spanish Peaks was developed as a 5,700-acre private residential ski-in-ski-out and golf community with lift access to Big Sky Resort. The property has a main
lodge with dining facilities, an 18-hole golf course for club members, and the 200-acre Spirit Mountain, which mainly boasts beginner and intermediate ski runs.

Bigger & Better All-Together ll together, the merger of these three resorts makes up the Biggest Skiing in America, measured in acreage and vertical drop, and the second largest in North America (Whistler Blackcomb is first). The biggest difference is that it’s now one entity all under the name of Big Sky Resort.
So it’s big, we know that, but what makes it more compelling than other ski areas around the Rockies? “It’s multiple things,” says Sheila Chapman, Big Sky Resort’s Public Relations Manager. “It’s the really amazing snow, the dry powder, the lack of lift lines with an average of over an acre per skier. At Vail and Aspen you can wait up to one hour on line, and here you’re doing laps.”
Chapman goes on to mention the varying terrain, which features runs for all levels, from those just learning the sport to the most extreme skiers and riders out there off the iconic 11,166-foot Lone Peak. “It’s like having a heli-ski experience without the heli-ski price,” she adds.
T
he Future CrossHarbor and Boyne teamed up as co-owners of Moonlight Basin and Spanish Peaks under the assumption that two heads are better than one.
“Big Sky Resort has a proven track record of being sustainable, and CrossHarbor has a strong business background with longevity projections,” Chapman says. “They’ve made a great partnership to perpetuate a great ski area and a great community.” The merger is sure to have an impact on the community, not only by developing more local jobs, but also by raising more awareness of Big Sky as a world-class destination. “I’m excited by the opportunities provided by this transaction and the partnership that has been established with Boyne Resorts,” says Sam Byrne, Managing Partner of CrossHarbor
Capital. “I believe this investment will result in important benefits for Southwest Montana, preserving and creating jobs and attracting further investment in the region. I look forward to working with Boyne Resorts, and all of our friends and neighbors throughout the region, as we create a path forward…” So what kind of differences can Big Sky area homeowners and visitors expect? “I believe that this merger is inevitably going to raise the property values that are here,” Chapman says. “People like to be with the new up and happening thing, and the Biggest Skiing in America is certainly an appeal.” But Chapman adds that Big Sky still holds onto that Western charm and the authentic Montana feel, and that’s not going anywhere. “Big Sky Resort is an unpretentious ski resort; it’s fun and laid back,” she says. “If you’re looking for a big nightclub scene or a ‘who’s going to see me’ type of place, you’re not going to get that here. We have the last frontier type feel, where you can enjoy time with your friends or family and not be barraged with too much stimulus.” It seems like bigger is better after all.
