CHANGE IS AFOOT BIG SKY EXPANDS IN MANY WAYS THIS SEASON By Corinne Garcia

A

s Big Sky Resort’s 40th anniversary wraps up, it’s amazing to look back at how the town has changed and expanded over the years. In 1968, the late NBC newscaster and Montana native Chet Huntley first set his sights on developing a ski area on Lone Peak. Skip ahead to today, and Big Sky Resort, under the ownership of Boyne Resorts since 1976, is now known as “The Biggest Skiing in America™,” featuring more skiable terrain than anywhere else in the U.S. What was once just a few log cabins and ranches scattered throughout the Canyon and Meadow Villages, is now a solid community with different neighborhoods and housing units, ranging from condominiums to custom mountain homes. With the development of the Big Sky Town Center, there’s now a community hub where residents and visitors can come together for outdoor events, concerts, and farmers’ markets. Throughout this growth, Big Sky has managed to keep a firm grip on its small town character. Over the years, it has become known more for its well rounded ski terrain, including alplike access to the top of Lone Peak, and lack of lift lines than for a hopping nightlife scene or a sprawling downtown. But as the population of year-round and part-time residents increases along with visitor numbers, change is afoot. Big Sky is currently welcoming some significant updates to the area, some that are more infrastructure based, such as a new school and hospital, and others that are more entertainment based, such as expanded terrain and new restaurants. Here are some of the latest new developments in the Big Sky community:

T

he New Ophir Elementary School

With an influx of year-round residents, the Big Sky School District has grown by leaps and bounds over the years. In 2009 the Lone Peak High School was added to the current Ophir School grounds, and they are expanding once again. After a bond was passed for $10.2 million, the district broke ground on a new K-4 elementary school, due to open its doors in the summer of 2015. This new 46,000 square foot building will feature classrooms, meeting and testing rooms for school specialists, offices, and a full sized gymnasium. “The need was quite simple; it came down to space,” said Superintendent and K-12 Principal Jerry House. “From the 2009/2010 school year to now, we have grown 66 percent in student population.” Once open, the new elementary school will be in its own building, and the middle school and high school will take over the current space, separated by a wing that’s specifically

4

designated for elective subjects, such as language, art, and a technology center. Future growth has also been worked into the plans with pre-plumbing to add four more classrooms when needed. “A huge majority voted for it,” Jerry said. “The public saw the need and the community really stepped forward.”

T

he Big Sky Medical Center

Sotheby’s Associate Broker Jeff Helms admits that potential buyers ask about Big Sky’s medical services all the time. “It’s a major dynamic,” he explains. “It’s always the fourth or fifth question someone asks, and an important factor for many people who are considering buying a Big Sky home.” And now with Big Sky’s first full service hospital is in the building stage and due to open its doors in the fall of 2015, he can finally give the answer that prospective buyers want to hear. The Big Sky Medical Center will be centrally located on seven acres in the Big Sky Town Center, and is an integral part of this growing town’s infrastructure. It will feature an Emergency Services department open 24/7, with a helistop for an air ambulance. The four-bed inpatient unit will be used for admissions and observation, and the site plans include space to increase to eight beds when needed. Other features will include an onsite diagnostic imaging center with general radiology, CT scanner, ultrasound, MRI, laboratory services, and a pharmacy, along with a primary care clinic and physical therapy services. “We’ve heard a lot of excitement about this project,” explains Cheryl Ridgely, Chief Strategy and Business Development Officer for Bozeman Deaconess Health Services. “I’ve been working on it for about 10 years.” Although the land was purchased in 2007 with plans to build, the recession hit and halted the project. “We’ve been evaluating every year, and now with the high school and the resort’s expanded growth and solidified business model, it made sense to move forward with a fullscale medical center,” she says. “Healthcare is one of those essential community services, and this will help keep the core of Big Sky here so they can stay year round.”

B

ig Sky Resort Updates - New Ski Runs, Etc.

The big news last year was the Big Sky Resort/Moonlight Basin merger, which officially made Big Sky the largest ski resort in the United States. But they just keep getting bigger. Along with added terrain for the 2014/2015 ski season, Big Sky resort has made some other exciting updates. New Ski Runs: Summertime glading projects resulted in some great intermediate tree skiing, adding 50 acres of new skiable terrain and four new ski runs. Off of the Southern Comfort chair lift, there’s the new “Lizette” run located between Deep South and Sacajawea, and “Pomp” located between Sacajawea and El Dorado runs. Another new intermediate glade cut run named “Lois Lane” can be found between Lower Morning Star and Mr. K off the Swift Current Lift, along with a new black diamond run named “Soul Hole” between Lobo and Calamity Jane. “We want to keep adding a variety of terrain for the various abilities so we can be that all encompassing resort for families,” says Sheila Chapman, Public Relations Manager at Big Sky Resort. “These intermediate tree runs will be a good way for people to check out tree skiing for their first time.” New On-Mountain Dining: Big Sky Resort’s newest restaurant, Everett’s 8800, will open this winter season at the top of Andesite Mountain accessible via the Ramcharger chairlift. Originally constructed in 2007 and formerly operated by Spanish Peaks Club as the Pinnacle, this log cabin style restaurant has been remodeled, featuring large indoor and outdoor fireplaces, a great deck for dining on sunny days, and spectacular mountain views. Serving up “American Alps” cuisine at 8,800 feet for breakfast, lunch, and après, it’s named after Everett Kircher who brought Big Sky Resort into the Boyne Resorts family in 1976. “We’re excited to have this on-mountain restaurant up and running this year,” Chapman says. “After being closed for about three years, we remodeled the inside and redecorated, and the deck has one of the best views of Lone Peak.”

M

oonlight Basin Updates

Moonlight Lodge Remodel: Moonlight Lodge, now operated by Montage Hotels and Resorts, got a major facelift for the upcoming season. The newly remodeled restaurant and bar, now known as The Moonlight Tavern, will still be open to the public. The deli and retail areas have been converted into a members’ only lounge and family center, and the ski lockers and fitness area has also been expanded, reserved exclusively for Moonlight members and their guests. New Ski-in, Ski-out Cabins: Moonlight Basin’s Silvertip Cabins are currently under construction to be completed in the spring/summer of 2015. The 17 cabins, ranging from 1,850 to 3,500 square feet, are located just inside the entrance to Cowboy Heaven, featuring rustic materials with a contemporary twist.

O

ther Big Sky Happenings

New Grocery Store: Roxy’s Market and Café, a 17,000 square foot, full-service grocery store, opened this fall in the Big Sky Town Center. Focusing on local and organic foods along with traditional selections, they also feature fresh fish and meats, a full selection of produce, a wide selection of beer and wine, and a full service deli. New Flights: This coming year, access to Big Sky is easier than ever with new non-stop flights from Houston (United), Seattle (Delta), New York’s LaGuardia (currently summer only). “This opens up the doors to more people coming here, and it also helps with airline pricing because it adds options,” Chapman says. New Spanish Peaks Cabins: The Spanish Peaks Mountain Club is currently adding six new units to finish up their neighborhood of Settlement Cabins. The 4-bedroom, 3.5bath timber framed cabins will range in size from 2,500 to 4,000 square feet, and will be completed in the spring of 2015. 5
