BIG SKY RESORT

It Isn’t Simply Getting Bigger; It’s Getting Better

Big Sky Resort has laid out their expansion plans and let’s just say, the future is looking extra bright. Already heralded as one of the best ski resorts in the country, future development aims to continue to expand the wonderful ski experience and enhance summer activities such as mountain biking and hiking. Let’s start with the lift service, which is slated to become the most advanced chairlift network in the United States. You’ll be able to access the highest lift-served vertical in the U.S. coming in at over 4,500 feet. Starting at Lone Peak, venturing down North Summit Snowfield and continuing to the bottom you’ll have skied the longest continuous vertical in the nation. What else? A gondola lift from the base of the mountain. But these lifts aren’t just for skiing. The mountain biking and hiking are

incredible in the summer, and the tram runs for scenic trips. While you’re on the mountain, stop at Everett’s 8800 for lunch. Speaking of dining, plans include two more onmountain restaurants, one at the top of the SixShooter lift on the Madison side of the mountain, and a new restaurant at the bowl. In addition, the village will expand to include unique dining, shopping and entertainment venues, bringing the feeling of a European village to Montana. Some already refer to Big Sky as the “American Alps.” Another enhancement, potentially for the 2017-18 season, is night skiing. Extended hours are great for both locals and visitors — what a perfect way to end the work day. Skier services are going to be expanded as well, including lodging, rentals, shopping and lessons.


Last summer, Ramcharger scenic chair lift opened to the top of Andesite Mountain, bringing new family activities including a kids’ zip line, bungee trampoline and gemstone mining. Ongoing efforts to enliven the summer mountain experience now include three scenic chair lifts accessing over 40 miles of mountain biking and hiking trails. Big Sky is already a popular destination for meetings and special events; watch for expanded facilities that will accommodate even larger groups. An important aspect of the expansion is a symbiotic relationship with the community. Big Sky Resort is actively investing in affordable housing options. A 44-employee housing unit has just been completed on campus, and another is slated to open in the meadow.

Getting here is easier than you think. Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport now has 15 non-stop flights from major cities, and Big Sky is committed to working with other area partners to continue this growth. The Skyline bus is funded in part by Big Sky Resort, and they are continuously working to find additional ground transportation options. In the next decade, the resort will invest $150 million in mountain improvements to enhance and protect the mountain experience and to partner with the community in creating a mountain town like no other. HISTORIC BOZEMAN BREWERYHome DISTRICT to Lehrkind Mansion

W

hen Julius Lehrkind, a German-born brewer, bought Bozeman Lager Beer in 1895, he had no idea the blocks he occupied would become one of Bozeman’s historic neighborhoods, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The business was healthy, and Lehrkind oversaw the construction of a new 12,000 square foot brewery, which was the largest building in Bozeman. The facility incorporated a complex new technology — refrigeration. This mechanical technology allowed for the beer to lager for six months. Barley and other grains were supplied by a community of Dutch 6

farmers who settled in nearby Manhattan, Montana. Close to the train depot, the railroad built a spur line to deliver raw materials, kegs and bottles to the brewery. The finished beer was then transferred back to the railroad where it was shipped across the state. The brewery operated until 1919 when prohibition hit Montana. In order to be close to the business, Julius built the Lehrkind Mansion adjacent to the brewery, rather than in one of Bozeman’s more affluent residential districts. To “bless” the house, each brick was soaked, or “cured” in beer, making it “The house that beer built.”
