Dear BTCA members,
Our National is coming up very soon. I am looking forward to
meeting old friends, and putting faces with names that I have only heard, or read about. I invite you all to come, even for one or two
days. I promise you a good time. Our National is a “one of a kind
show”. If you are showing a dog, or just watching, you will go away
with many happy memories. This year is sure to be exiting with the new events we have added. I look forward to seeing you.

From the
Editor
I just love the first hints of spring. It is most apparent to me in the morning, the crisp fresh air when I walk out to my car. We’ve had a few Spring-like days in Wisconsin this year. It’s so nice to leave the house without putting on the whole ensemble of winter clothes. The dogs have been playing outside, and better yet, I don’t have to shove them out the door to go potty. I have been enjoying my new puppies Geraldine and Olive (Their sister GiGi has a wonderful new home). They are learning to walk on a lead. We practice daily on our way from work to get tea and dog biscuits from the local coffee shop. Dog shows have provided me with a wonderful excuse to travel. My radius keeps expanding as to how far I’ll drive for a show. I’m looking forward to going to Nationals in Connecticut. I have never been out East. Hopefully not being a member of this years host club will give me the opportunity to have more time to visit and meet people.
Brook W. Berth Editor-In-Chief
In this issue I’ll share with you my first adventures in animal showing. I took the dog project in 4-H for one year. Our family dog was an older black lab named Gus. He fell asleep during the long sit at our first dog show. At that time my parents weren’t interested in having any more house dogs. We looked to other types of animals. We wanted to show at County Fair, something we could handle and take care of ourselves. The other requirement was that they would be able to go home with us, rather than taken away on the livestock truck. We decided on Dairy Goats. When I was 12 years old we purchased my first goat, whom we named Olivia, a Nubian. I was about as zealous as one could be on the finer points of goat showmanship, and did quite well with my goat Darla, Olivia’s granddaughter. And yes, I dressed my goats up too.

Approved Board Minutes Boston Terrier Club of America, Inc. december 2, 2008 President Ola Jeanne McCollough called the meeting to order at 8:03 p.m. (EST). Present were Ola Jeanne McCollough, Melany Anaya, Sharon Stoll, Linda Jett, Richard Nix, Peggy Jackson, Carolyn Gastley, Dane LaJoye, Maureen Blackwood and Dick Wiest. Joyce Fletcher and Marby Kelly were absent. Board Reports President - no report Vice President – Fletcher was absent but LaJoye read her report. As liaison to the newsletter, Fletcher states that the Coast to Coast is due to be printed and mailed in approx. 2 days. Fletcher added that she had one change to the draft minutes from 10/14/08 that she would like incorporated before they are approved. She also sent out her appreciation to Richard Nix for his outstanding handling of the recent audit. Lastly, in regards to Kathryn Graves obtaining a research grant from BTCA for juvenile cataracts, Fletcher would like more information from Graves before the board makes a decision on this issue. Blackwood added that Graves is not yet prepared to address the board until further information is gathered in regards to feasibility and legality issues. Recording Secretary – Motion by Nix to approve the minutes of 10-14-08 as
corrected, seconded by Jackson. Motion approved. Gastley joined the meeting at this point. Minutes of 11-11-08 approved as read. Anaya reports that she has received the slate of nominees from the Nominating Committee for the 2009-2011 term and that the slate would be mailed to the membership on/after January 1, 2009, as per the bylaws. Additional nominations are due by February 1, 2009. Corresponding Secretary – LaJoye sent a letter to Kathleen Brewer stating “because of lapse in her dues” she was no longer a BTCA member or BTCA board member and that she needs to send all BTCA belongings to him via C.O.D. LaJoye also reports that in regards to the 2009 specialty that the planning is right on track and that the show packet is due out in the next newsletter and the winter Boston Quarterly. He added that the host club has asked that they receive 2-days of RV parking revenues but BTCA has never done that for any other host clubs. LaJoye to call Charlotte Comstock (of the host club) to discuss. LaJoye left the meeting at this point, the time was 8:36 p.m. (EST). Treasurer’s Report - The balance as of 10/31/08 is $64,215.57. The board thanked Nix for his contribution towards the recent audit.
Unfinished Business Budgets – In regards to the committee budget list, the BT of the Year was just added to the list and it was reported that Ken Roux stated that the committee “didn’t need a budget”. McCollough suggested the 2009-2010 budgets be discussed at the board’s annual meeting in April. Kim Pennington sent a committee report to the board stating that the costs of her being the rescue chair include her phone, internet and voicemail. After a brief discussion the board decided to change the current $500/year budget to $600/year. Newsletter – There was a brief discussion on the costs being incurred for the newsletter. The annual budget is $5000 yet the most recent invoice was for $1595.00 for one issue. Nix proposed that the newsletter editor possibly shop around for a printer with better prices. It was also noted that the current printer requires Nix to sign an agreement in order to proceed. Fletcher to review first. Further discussion tabled until Fletcher reports back to the board with her findings. Top Boston/Futurity – Tabled until next meeting.

New Business 2008 Audit – Nix reports the audit is moving along smoothly and that everyone is using the expense/revenue form as requested. Health Committee – There are 2 new proposed Health Committee members, Glenna Sprague, DVM and Renee Buzzell. Brief discussion. Jackson motioned to accept Glenna Sprague, DVM and Renee Buzzell to the Health Committee. Seconded by Gastley. Motion approved. Rescue – Kim Pennington, the Rescue Chair reports that the committee is still in need of members. It was originally decided to include 4 people from different areas of the U.S. but since no one has come forward it was decided that 2 people, one from each coast, would suffice. Peggy Jackson, acting as the committee’s liaison, will write a letter to the membership and mail it out to all affiliate clubs in hopes that at least 2 people will step forward. AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship Award – Jackson reports that last year she and Marby Kelly (the first recipient of the award) were the ones who selected the 2008 recipient. She noted that it would be easier if the committee had 3 members so that there was never a deadlocked vote. Jackson suggested that the recipient from the previous year be on the committee with at least one board member. If the recipient were a couple, then the committee would have just one board member but if the recipient were just one person then there would be 2 board members
on the committee. It was proposed that for 2009 Melany Anaya would be on the committee along with Dan & Julie Haddy, the 2008 recipients. If Anaya or the Haddys were not at the 2009 national to present the award then it was clarified that the President would do the honors. In addition, the general membership will play a part in the selection by sending in a name of a potential recipient to the committee for further consideration. Jackson to draft a letter to the membership and send to LaJoye to distribute to the Affiliate Clubs (since we missed the cut off for the information to be in the next Coast to Coast). Website – Anaya, the BTCA Web Editor, reported that the basic format for the new BTCA website was almost finished and as soon as the committee had approved it that she would forward it to the board for their approval. Once approved, the new webmaster would get started transferring the new site. Misc. – Jackson added that she appreciates working with the new board and that it’s nice to have a group of people that work together and have fresh ideas.

lthough J R was the number 1 Boston in 1985, a multiple Best in Show, specialty show winner, and winner of the 1985 National Specialty, his real contribution to the breed was as a stud dog. He produced 72 get who finished their championships and numerous others whom could have. His get also produced specialty, national show, group winners, and a Best in Show winner. J R was breeder/owner handles and was produced
from a breeding of CH Zodiac’s War Witch bred by Juanita Camp to CH El-Bo’s Rudy is a Dandy bred by Bob and Ellie Candland. J R was an outcross but he was a prepotent sire consistently producing Boston terriers which many could spot in the ring as out of J R. J R lived to be 14 years old playing with his toys and the Staley children. He happily awaited his girlfriends who were shipped-in to be bred. J R is buried in the Highland cemetery across the road from the show site where he won the 1985 BTCA National Show. J R was a once-in-a-lifetime dog never to be forgotten. He left his mark on the breed for generations. Ch El-Bo’s Rudy is a Dandy will be featured in the June issue of the Coast to Coast.

Obedience 101 by Sue Herber
What? Obedience is a learned set of skills or behaviors, which enables a dog to live more compatibly with their owner(s). Obedience emphasizes and demonstrates the usefulness of the dog as a companion to mankind. The core of a good relationship with a family pet, therapy dog and performance dog is obedience. Obedience is NOT age, gender, color, owner or breed specific. Basic obedience would greatly reduce the ever-growing numbers of dogs in shelters and rescue organizations. Obedience training is and can be fun with your Boston. Given the opportunity, Bostons excel at obedience. Who? The American Kennel Club offers opportunities at Obedience Trials for purebred dogs and their owners to demonstrate these abilities and maintains permanent records of their accomplishments. Any
healthy purebred dog with an AKC registration number can compete for Obedience titles. As of 2010, AKC will recognize more than 10 obedience titles earned from seven different classes. How? To earn a “leg” toward a title the team (dog & handler) must compete at a licensed trial and earn a score of 170 points or above. There is a maximum score of 200 points possible. And yes, there are unconfirmed reports of Boston Terriers earning the perfect “200” performance. The title is awarded to those teams who earn 3 legs at three different trials. The points earned for each qualifying leg are based on the team’s precision of each of the six exercises executed in the class. Every class has six exercises that the team is scored on. The classes build in difficulty as they progress and they build off the previous class requirements.

The classes offered & order of progression: Beginner Novice (BN), Novice (CD), Graduate Novice (GN), Open (CDX), Graduate Open (GO), Utility (UD) and Versatility (VER). Beginner Novice is effective in 2010, all other classes are currently available. A team can’t earn a higher title without having earned the previous one. A team must first earn a CD before earning a CDX. The Obedience Trial Champion (OTCH), Utility Dog Excellent titles and Obedience Master (OM) titles require more tenacity and precision than the other titles. The Utility Dog Excellent (UDX) is earned by qualifying in both the Open B and Utility B classes at 10 different trials. Multiple UDX’s can be earned. Several Boston Terriers have earned UDX’s. The Obedience Trial Champion (OTCH) is earned from the Open B & Utility B classes and is based on a point system. Utmost precision is required to earn the 100 points necessary. Points are determined by the number of dogs defeated in each class. Also required is a first placement in the Open B and Utility B class with another first placement from either class. The Boston Terrier breed does have an OTCH Boston in its history. The Obedience Master (OM) is also earned from the Open B & Utility B Classes. This title requires 200 points. These points are earned by the individual team’s scores that are 190 and above. Multiple OM’s are attainable When training your Boston Terrier, remember that they want what we want from life: Fun and
immediate gratification with positive reinforcement for their best efforts and successes. Why? We acquired our Bostons because of their clever, quick personalities and their easy, sporty appearance. They deserve our time and respect that obedience training establishes. Without any obedience, a badly behaved Boston Terrier makes life difficult and frustrating for everyone. That certainly is not why we acquired them.

We thanked her for starting up this
great club. Her love & dedication for the Boston Terrier and the LBTC is evident.

“The American Gentleman”
Boston Terriers are sometimes called the “The American Gentleman" because of their calm disposition and formal black and white "tuxedo“ markings, the Boston Terriers are one of America's native breeds. A lively, intelligent, smooth-coated and compactly built dog with short tail, the Boston Terrier comes in three sizes: under 15lb, 15lb to under 20lb, and 20lb to under 25lb. The Boston Terrier is a very friendly dog with an excellent disposition, is highly trainable, and good with children. The Boston Terrier is a member of the non-sporting group and was first registered by the AKC in 1893.
