have to admit I’m going through a bit of dog show withdrawal, not many shows this time of year in Wisconsin. I truly enjoy traveling with my little dogs, even though we sometimes end up staying in some iffy places. This summer I stayed at a motel where I had to shove a whole pile of towels under the door because my dogs could almost stick their whole heads underneath. I have seen some interesting outfits on lobby loiters. I always have a good time though. My next show will be Western’s specialty at IKC. I’m hoping to see some of you there. Until then, I will be snuggling up with my Bostons and bulldogs trying to stay warm. This issue starts my second year as Coast to Coast editor. It has definitely kept me busy, my husband will attest to that. I hope the publication continues to improve each issue. Feel free to send me your ideas and I will take them into consideration.

Approved Special Board Meeting Minutes Boston Terrier Club of America, Inc. September 2, 2009 President Ola Jeanne McCollough called the meeting to order at 8:04 p.m. (EST). Present were Ola Jeanne McCollough, Joyce Fletcher, Lynda Bradley, Richard Nix, Dane LaJoye, Marby Kelly (AKC Delegate), Maureen Blackwood, Dick Wiest , Peggy Jackson, Linda Jett, Sharon Stoll, and Carolyn Gastley. Meeting was called to order at 8:04 PM (EST) Roll Call – Bradley Motion by Fletcher to approve the meeting minutes of August
11, 2009 as corrected, seconded by Gastley. Motion approved unanimously. AKC Delegate Voting on September 15, 2009 - Fletcher noted that the Board did not make it clear as to how it would like Kelly (AKC Delegate) to vote, with regards to the AKC Group realignment issue. Fletcher made a motion for Kelly to vote “No” on the group realignment as a whole, and to do so by having a roll call vote “for” or “against” by name. Kelly commented that this vote could be difficult to accomplish
and in the Constitution of Bylaws of AKC, no such action has been outlined. Fletcher requested Kelly to ask for the roll call vote since the names would be published in the minutes of the Gazette and everyone would gain an idea of voting status. Motion was made by Nix to adjourn, seconded by Jackson. Motion approved unanimously. Meeting adjourned at 8:31 p.m. (EST). Respectfully submitted, Lynda Bradley BTCA Recording Secretary
Approved Special Board Meeting Minutes Boston Terrier Club of America, Inc. October 20, 2009 President Ola Jeanne McCollough called the meeting to order at 8:03 p.m. (EST). Present were Ola Jeanne McCollough, Joyce Fletcher, Richard Nix, Dane LaJoye, Maureen Blackwood, Dick Wiest, Linda Jett, Sharon Stoll, and Carolyn Gastley. Absent were Peggy Jackson and Marby Kelly. Discussion began regarding the judging proposal from Carl Gomes, as presented at the August 11, 2009 Board meeting. McCollough presented a list of breeder judges that she was aware of (a couple
of them were not members of the BTCA). Nix reminded the Board that the purpose of the meeting was to decide if the Board should adopt Carl Gomes’ proposal for selection of judges at the National. Fletcher also reminded the Board that we could not accept Carl’s proposal at this time since a proposed list of judges was decided upon by the membership in 2007 and the Board cannot change this without going back to the membership. A proposal was made by Nix and seconded by Jett that we
continue in the same path with the judges that was proposed by the membership and decided upon by the membership. Motion approved unanimously. Blackwood made a motion that the Board approve the purchase of more puppy books by the Health Club, seconded by Stoll. Approved unanimously. Meeting adjourned at 8:20 EST. Respectfully submitted, Lynda Bradley BTCA Recording Secretary

3:00 and 4:00 a.m. we had lost our

I began making phone calls at day-

loading the car. First supplies, then the two “mother” dogs (Libby was preg-
nant we thought), then everyone else. The puppies were transported in my
old reliable Omaha Steak cooler with the lid tied on. Now we gathered up the other dogs and headed out. Bob
had brothers Chip and Dale as well as
Dudley, the blind senior citizen. I took Lisa, Willy and his daughters, Hemi and Sparky and the boxed puppies. Bob had his hands full with the
brothers charging to the front while the scared blind dog brought up the
rear. Dudley had to walk as carrying
him wasn’t an option. The arched tree over the driveway was his worst ob-
stacle as it was totally unfamiliar and
he panicked. Bob worked him through it. My dogs had no issues other than they very neatly braided the leashes. The puppies and Mama Cricket
would ride on the passenger seat with me. Willy was put in that crate with
his daughter Hemi. Chip went in the

I tried the motel to reconfirm our
reservation. I didn’t get an answer. This would come back to bite me. Next I
called the vets’ office. Dr. Ross was there and said to come by. Fourteen miles
later, we exited to go to the vets’ office.
The loose dogs were riding very well and for the most part behaving. Only occasionally did they ask to come up front. [Please note: we know it isn’t
safe to travel this way. We secure all
our dogs in crates or seat-belts in the car or van. These were extenuating
circumstances and we did what we had to do at the time.]
My vets are located in Pewee Valley, a quaint village. They are located across from a train track. We usually slip in
the back way to avoid the train tracks
but storms like this bring the old trees down and block the back roads so we
went in the front way. Bob stayed with the dogs and I took the puppies in.
Due to the power outages, the vets were running minimum power with a generator. Patients and vet techs were dropping off critters for shelter. They
had eight Papillons plus a two week old
too, a snake, some lizards and cats and I two puppies worked on had to bleed a little but the remaining three did
fine. We were there about 10 minutes, between phone calls and snips. Back
out to the car and off for our next stop ~ once I got three dogs off my seat. First we dropped four dogs with
Steve. He was feeling “puny” so set up
everything and tried to get out as quickly as we politely could. Then we went to the Stevens’ house. Linda started with
dogs in one room and then changed her mind. She decided it would require a
little thought. After refusing her offer to put us up, we left for the motel.
We finally reached the motel at
5:00 p.m., looking forward settling in
after “helping” and to our first food of the day, some heat and rest. The man behind the counter informed us we did not have a reservation and they
did not have any rooms! I explained our telephone conversation, that I had given the lady our credit card information, etc. and she said she

Ah, she remembered that but insisted that I had said we would be checking
in within an hour. How could that be,
I asked, when we had so much prep to do just to leave with 14 dogs? Finally,
they relented and the man said he had
a couple of rooms that weren’t finished if Bob wanted to go with him to look at them. They went off. At this point my cell phone rang. It was Johnny Johnson calling to offer help if we
needed it. That nearly brought me to tears. “Mrs. Manager” finally found
my reservation! The men returned and Bob said all would be okay; we just
needed to help get the room cleaned and prepped.
Bob and I cleaned and readied our
room and four additional room, including hanging head boards and some
light plumbing. We finally ate around
7:30 p.m. after feeding the girls. But all was fine! We were all warm and safe.
Our power was restored on Thursday; we went home on Saturday and retrieved the other dogs on Sunday. Everyone was happy to be home!

The
Importance of Enzymes for our Dogs
by Dr. Jeannie Thomason
Enzymes are the foundation of energy and the life force in all living things. They are responsible for building, detoxifying, and healing the body. They are the force that allows the body to digest and absorb food. Enzymes also regulate tens of thousands of other biochemical functions that take place in the body every day. Even thinking involves “enzymes”. Without enzymes, seeds would not sprout, fruit would not ripen, leaves would not change color, and life would not exist. Science has confirmed that (LEL) Low Enzyme Levels are the world’s #1 killer, based on the late Dr. Edward Howell’s 40-year research covering more than 700 worldwide studies. Low Enzyme Levels kill more humans than AIDS, cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and accidents - combined. The studies conclude that all diseases, from cancer to the minor sniffle, have one root cause “Low Enzymes Levels”. When the body’s enzyme levels are high, disease disappears. When low - disease appears and eventually kills. Enzymes as supplements are particularly beneficial for dogs who: • are fed cooked or processed food • are suffering from digestive disorders • are under stress • are senior dogs (Older dogs tend to produce lesser amounts of enzymes. Many also suffer from zinc deficiency resulting in low immunity enzymes seem to be able to increase zinc levels in the body) • have a weakened immune system due to medications such as steroids and/or antibiotics • are suffering from systemic yeast infections • are suffering from thyroid problems such as hypothyroidism (enzymes enhance the absorption of selenium
which is an antioxidant that works in conjunction with vitamin E. Selenium is essential in converting the inactive form of thyroid hormone (T4) to the active form (T3)) Enzymes have been found to be very successful in treating stool eating, GI problems, skin irritations, as well as being beneficial to dogs with allergies and arthritis. Enzyme Nutrition A famous pet-nutritional study by Dr. Francis M. Pottenger demonstrated that a ‘life-long diet’ of preprocessed or cooked foods as the main reason why animals develop chronic degenerative diseases, infections and other maladies. His study confirmed that the succeeding generations that remain on this type of enzyme-less diet would show progressively more illness and disease. So, you can see that not only are enzymes necessary for proper digestion, they are an integral component of every chemical reaction that occurs within the body. Without enzymes no bodily processes would be possible. For example, detoxification, digestion, elimination, and a properly functioning nervous system are all processes that would not occur without enzymes. This is the reason that enzymes are considered the most important supplement today. Are you meeting all your pet’s nutritional needs? Animal health experts agree that animals are naturally designed to eat raw, enzyme rich food. Today, domestic animals live in our homes or under our care and most are fed a processed, commercial kibble. The problem is that even the very best, commercial pet foods do not provide all that your pet needs for optimal health. Enzymes are necessary for rebuilding, detoxifying and general maintenance of the body. Enzymes become inactivated or destroyed when there is a change in
their environmental conditions such as PH or temperature. Specifically, when food is cooked or processed at temperatures of 118°F or above, the enzymes in the food are destroyed. Without these food enzymes, the body has to work harder and create more digestive enzymes in an attempt to digest the food. The cooking/heating and processing of food destroys the enzymes, robbing it of its “liveness”. Unless your pet is on a totally raw, natural diet as he would eat in the wild, then, adding supplements is vital for his/her good health. Kibble and/or processed food’s ingredients have not only been irradiated but are cooked at 280 degrees Fahrenheit for 60 minutes (the amount of time and temperature the U.S. uses, those in Britain and Europe may differ slightly) as the beginning process of making pet food. This part of the processing or rendering with high temperatures causes the meat to melt off of bones to produce a soup or slurry. I will spare you the details of pet food production for now I just wanted to make the point that processed pet food is void of any enzymes. Consuming these enzyme-less foods places stress on dog’s body and its future ability to make the enzymes necessary to stay healthy. Ever wonder why so many kibble fed dogs have food allergies? Food allergies are in reality, the body’s response to an ingredient that it cannot be sufficiently broken down or digested for utilization. Dogs being carnivores, naturally lack the enzymes to break down and utilize cooked foods, grains, vegetables - all ingredients found in commercial pet foods. Unless we are feeding our dogs a raw meat and bone diet, we should supplement with enzymes to give them the means to obtain any nutrients to found in their cooked/processed diets.

Benefits of Enzymes: • Increases T-Cell (cancer fighting cell) production and activity within a short period after digestion. Raises white cell blood count. • • Contains over 77 Ionic minerals. Promotes weight loss in over-weight • dogs. Strengthens the immune system. • • Improves nutritional absorption and energy level. Reduces hunger craving • • Decreases risks of degenerative disease, cholesterol, plaque build up and toxins in the body. Enables the body to obtain nutri• ents from food. How do enzymes strengthen our pet’s immune system? Your animal’s body has a natural built in “enzyme bank” (just as we humans do) from which enzymes that are necessary for digestion, battling viruses, and dissolving bacteria, are drawn. When enzymes are being diverted to your pet’s digestive tract to aid in the digestion of food lacking any life (or enzymes), there is less enzyme potential to fight off illness and disease as it occurs. Supplying the needed enzymes at the time of feeding, on the other hand, can conserve the enzymes produced by the body for use by the immune system. If our dogs have inadequate amounts of digestive enzymes they will with time, develop health problems including: waste-toxins which accumulate in the blood, lymph and tissues (contributes to a weak immune system), lack of energy, excessive gas, osteoarthritis, hip dysplasia, digestive disorders, food allergies, poor skin condition, hot spots, loose stool, consumption of their own stool, foul breath and/or body odor. Enzymes help musculoskeletal pain, swelling and inflammation. Oral enzyme formulas have been medically validated as a natural healing agent that can help to relive musculoskeletal pain, swelling and inflammation.
Enzymes excel, as nature’s most powerful and scientifically validated aspirin alternative. Supplemented enzymes diffuse through the intestinal tract membrane and travel through the bloodstream to inflamed sites. Once the enzymes reach diseased tissues, their altered pH enables them to work in a diseased, inflamed environment. Enzymes work by breaking up what medical scientists’ call circulating immune complexes (CICs) that are at the root of inflammation. Indeed, chronic pain conditions almost always involve CICs. These circulating complexes of damaged proteins-made-up of cellular antibodies, antigens, and diseased tissue-accumulate in body parts such as the blood vessels, joints, and other tissues where they become systemic irritants, causing inflammation, and delaying the healing process. Unfortunately, in chronic disease states, the cleansing capacity of the body is reduced, and bad proteins formed from antibodies and antigens (the circulating immune complexes) can accumulate. In cases where there is acute inflammation, such as rheumatoid arthritis, these immune complexes have grown so much in number and have so overpowered the body’s immune system that they have taken up permanent residence in the body’s tissues. Enzymes, with their proteolytic capabilities, help to breakup and destroy these bad proteins and immune complexes, helping the immune system to do its job better by removing inflammatory substances. Think of enzymes as a co-worker and partner in a healthy immune system that, in turn, helps with chronic pain conditions. Enzymes also modulate the body’s immune system, enhancing the activity of its macrophage cells that gobble up the broken down CICs and help to transport them out of the body through the lymph system. While Enzymes are not as fast acting as typical NSAIDs, over the long run, they are much more effective and safer.
