Greetings, We are all saddened by the death of Ann McCammon and Marcia Jongsma in the last 3 months. They both will be greatly missed. Plans for the National are coming together nicely. Turn out is expected to be as good or exceed last year. Looking forward to seeing everyone there.
Hug your Boston,
Ola Jeanne McCollough president
The Coast to Coast is produced with the Adobe Creative Suite on Macintosh computers. Body text is set in Adobe Caslon Pro and Myriad Pro. Adobe Caslon is based on the type designs of William Caslon, circa 1725. These in turn had been influenced by the Dutch types of the late seventeenth century. Although old style in nature they have less stress than some of the earlier faces of the genre. The Adobe Caslon font family was based on specimen pages printed by Caslon between 1734 and 1770. Myriad was designed by Carol Twombly and Robert Slimbach in 1992. The display faces are Fling and Kursivschrift. Fling is a fanciful typeface was designed by resident Letraset designer Michael Gills and is based on the famous French Ronde script. Created entirely on screen, Fling has a precise, clinical appearance. The capitals are for initialling purposes only and support a lowercase that is rich in alternative and ligatured letterforms. Also included is a host of attractive embellishment devices. Kursivschrift is by designer German Cartographic Design and published by Linotype. The Coast to Coast is web offset-printed at Badger Press in Fort Atkinson, WI.

From the
Editor
I’ve been having fun showing bostons with my friends including Heather Masse and her daughters. The Masses have been showing a bitch they co-own with me. The oldest daughter is Madison who shows in junior showmanship. Her younger sister Mya shows in the regular conformation classes. Mya can show in junior showmanship after her June birthday and she is really excited about it. Madison has found a bonus of dog-showing is shopping for “show clothes” and “show shoes”. I recently found that she fits into suits from Forever 21. This is really exiting for me because we previously couldn’t find suits small enough for her. A couple of weeks ago Heather asked the girls if they would like to audition for the community musical. Mya told her mother she really needed to focus on her dog-showing career. She didn’t think she could commit the time to the musical without affecting her dog-showing. I would like to wish everyone a successful showing season, especially the junior handlers.

* December 7, 2009
Vice President – Fletcher introduced Brook Berth, who joined the first part of the meeting to report on the status and begin discussions regarding the Coast to Coast newsletter. Berth presented the probable change in the C2C mailing status. To be mailed 1st class, 500 pieces are needed to be sent. Since membership is down in the 400s, Standard delivery will have to be used whose minimum amount is only 200 items. Nix commented that 40+ members have recently been dropped. However with the holiday season, there could be a delay in the membership receiving the C2C without using 1st class. Fletcher offered that if Berth can send her the C2C on Monday, December 14, 2009, she can proof and return to Berth in one day. Berth thought that this would be possible as she needs one weekend to complete the latest issue. Berth relayed it cost $250 to ship the C2C Standard class and $900 if sent 1st class. Berth also offered that most publications are sent Standard class and even though turnover could be a bit longer due to the time of year, there ultimately would not be an extended delay. LaJoye suggested the 2010 show packet, which was included in the C2C, be posted on the website while membership is waiting for the C2C if there is a mailing delay. Berth suggested to the Board, reducing the number of copies sent annually from 4 to 3 – one newsletter before the National, one after, and one in-between. She also presented pushing the deadlines back. Fletcher felt it is
important to the membership to distribute 4 times a year and reminded the group the C2C is a newsletter more than a magazine. The Board agreed with Fletcher that sending the newsletter to the membership 4 times a year is a priority. Berth reported the C2C is time consuming, taking 200-300 hours to complete. The Board feels Berth should have assistance in completing the next issue. Fletcher advocated this help and feels –along with the Board - Berth is doing an outstanding job with the club newsletter. Berth’s concern was any volunteer might not have or know how to use the particular software she has to complete the C2C. Fletcher stated that the necessary software can be purchased for those individuals who would like to assist. McCollough suggested and a discussion followed regarding assistance to Berth. A committee was formed consisting of LaJoye, Jackson, Fletcher and Berth who could generate ideas and suggestions. Jackson made a motion to have Brook Berth attend Board meetings where the C2C will be discussed, seconded by Blackwood. Motion approved unanimously. Berth left the conference at 8:25 p.m. (EST) Recording Secretary – Motion by Fletcher to approve the meeting minutes of September 2, 2009 as corrected, seconded by Jett. Motion approved unanimously. Motion made by Fletcher to approve the meeting minutes from October 20, 2009, seconded by Jett. Motion approved unanimously. Bradley reported Sharon Stoll has e-mailed her the Nominating slate by the December 15, 2009 due date and Bradley will mail to the membership by January 1, 2010. Corresponding Secretary –LaJoye received a letter from the Canine Health Foundation thanking the BTCA for it’s donation of $5500, supporting and making a significant contribution / impact on current health issues. LaJoye will discuss the National later in the meeting during his Show Committee report.

Treasurer’s Report – Nix reported the current balance to be $67,971.78 with the breakdown as follows: Boston of the Year =$490.79, Futurity challenge =$6480.00, General funds =$35,918.37, Health fund =$14,284.39, Perpetual trophy = $5706.98 and Rescue =$5091.25. AKC Delegate Report - Kelly reported at the September 2009 AKC meeting, the Board Realignment discussion was postponed until March 2010. Kelly referred to a previous request made by the Board to ask for a Delegate roll call, and commented it has never been done while she has been active since 1986. Kelly has noticed a more positive outlook towards accepting the realignment than before, since most of objections are coming from those in the Non-Sporting group. Fletcher maintained Kelly can still propose a roll call of the Delegates and Kelly assured she would comply with the Board’s request. The main reason the breed realignment is not favored by many, is money. Having more group competitions will increase costs (ribbons, equip.m.ent) and length of show times. Kelly also commented how many small clubs would have to hire a judge who can review multiple breeds, rather than an individual who specializes in a single breed. Based on feedback she has received from all-breed clubs, Fletcher believes most judges are opposed to the realignment. Kelly reported she will not be attending the December 14, 2009 Delegate meeting, as the focus is more social, but is planning to attend the more strategic March 2010 meeting.
Unfinished Business 2010 National Update– AKC has approved the BTCA National to be held in Atlanta May 2010. LaJoye reported the show packet is completed and is currently working on the Premium list. He hopes to have it to MB-F by Christmas or sooner. LaJoye is also working on the trophies which are to be etched glass and Waterford crystal from a separate vendor for BOB, BOS, and BOW. Donations are beginning to be submitted, as he currently has 4 donations and will forward checks to Nix. LaJoye reports that the host club is doing well, committees are formed, and everything is in order. Pat McCann will be the chief ring steward. Jackson is handling the catalog advertisements, and has spoken to her contact at MB-F. She is also working on compiling an e-mail list of those who have submitted an advertisement in the last 5 years. Jackson’s plan is to send a reminder e-mail 10 days before the advertising deadline. A full page ad receives a reserved seat assigned on a first come-first serve basis. Rates are as follows: full page black and white ads are $65; half page is $45; quarter page $25; and with 2 or more ads, an individual will receive $5 discount per ad. All checks are to be sent to Jackson made out to the BTCA, and she will mail them to Nix with a notation the monies are for catalog advertising. Jackson would like the ads to have a $20 penalty if e-mailed or postmarked after the March 21, 2010 deadline, ensuring more timely submissions. No ads will be accepted after March 24, 2010. Jackson is working with Berth so ads will be sent to BTCA_ads@yahoo.com, as listed in the C2C, rather than her personal e-mail.
To clarify, a free catalog is included with a $40+ donation but not with the purchase of a full page ad. Gastley reported Obedience and Rally trials have been approved by AKC, and she has both performance judges’ contracts in hand. The Obedience / Rally judging assignment is with Marleen Burford and her fee is $100, which will cover her gas and expenses. The Agility application has been sent to Nix with a disaster plan, yet currently the AKC still lists the show as “pending”. Gastley to contact AKC to follow up. The agility judge is Chris Danielly and she and will charge $1 per run plus IRS approved mileage of .55 cents/mile. There were 37 runs last year and the entry for 2010 is estimated to be larger. Gastley warned that due to increased numbers, Agility could run long and there is a possibility Obedience might not be able to start at the scheduled 1:00 p.m.. LaJoye assured Gastley that if the obedience / rally judge is flexible Obedience can begin later than the original proposed time. Gastley also stated that she will have a better idea of the numbers and therefore timing, once entries close before the show. Fletcher left the meeting at 8:50 p.m. (EST) Boston Terrier of the Year - Jackson opened a discussion on the mailing of the Boston Terrier of the Year ribbon, which is typically against the rules. Jackson was unsure of the approval flow since as liaison, Ken Roux as the chair, or members of the committee were not aware. The premium list states no award will be mailed, as referenced to Conformation. LaJoye was under the impression the rule in the premium list didn’t apply to the Top

Approved BOARD Minutes Boston competition and approved the mailing of the ribbon placed in a shadow box. In retrospect if this issue arises again, the committee will be consulted for a decision on mailing an award to alleviate any confusion. Moving forward, the newest changes to the rules and amendments according to Jackson and the committee are as follows – and are supported by the Board: 1) NO prizes or ribbons will be mailed to anyone that does not claim theirs or make arrangements to have their awards picked up 2) anyone that judges this event is ineligible to judge again until 3 years have past since last judging assignment 3) prize money was incorrectly stated in the guidelines – it should be 70% to the owner and 30% to the breeder. The Futurity is closed for 2010 and the results so far are: 98 litters have been nominated with 72 puppy nominations and 69 stud dogs. Individual puppy nominations will still be coming in for 2010 but litter nominations after November 18 will be for 2011. Futurity judge selections are currently being worked on and Dane will be sent the results by December 15, 2010. Sportsmanship Award– Jackson reported as the liaison, there will be a Sportsmanship Committee meeting and a ballot published in the C2C available for those to nominate and include the rationale / reason for the individual to be recognized. Melany Anaya is acting chair and the past winner is on the committee, who will also present the award to the next recipient. New Business Performance Fund Raiser – Gastley reported she is reviewing T-shirts to
be offered for sale with different designs incorporating the National’s theme. She is also working on possibly holding a raffle to raise enough money to cover expenses. Rescue Chair Replacement – Jackson strongly felt the current rescue chair, Kim Pennington, needs a committee for assistance. With Pennington as the chair, maybe 4 individuals in various parts of the country she thought. Blackwood suggested using the C2C as a vehicle to inform the membership regarding the dire need of a rescue network. Jackson to compose related information and will send to Berth for publishing. Further discussion was tabled at this time. Membership Chair Replacement – McCollough has received calls from new members who have not received Welcome Packets or the C2C. McCollough proposed replacing the Membership Chairman with an individual who can complete the duties of this role. Discussion of how the Corresponding Secretary and Membership Chair’s role were mixed and/or interchangeable at one time. Jackson offered that Alison Allison received several boxes at the 2009 National from Sharon Stoll as she began as chair July 2008, and compiled all information to a single box. The data in the box was original applications from 1993 to 2007. McCollough maintains phone calls have not been returned to her from Allison, materials have not been sent to membership, and duties as Membership Chair have not been completed for over a year. Jackson felt Allison did not have a mentor to assist her as the Chair, yet the Board felt she was informed of her duties.
Nix asked McCollough if a member would like to take over this role, and she offered Charlotte Comstock. LaJoye made a motion to replace Allison as the Membership Chair with Charlotte Comstock. Nix seconded. Motion carried unanimously. McCollough to call Comstock and inform her of this decision, while Jackson will contact Allison. Discussion on the need for outlined roles and responsibilities that are expected of each Board position, officer, or committee chairs. As an example, whether the Corresponding Secretary or Membership chair should send out Welcome Letters to new members. Because of this confusion on job responsibilities, LaJoye made a motion for each committee chair to develop a job description of their duties within the next couple of months. These descriptions can be forwarded onto the next individual taking over a committee position. Motion failed as it was not supported due to a lack of a second. Breeder of the Year - Fletcher asked about possibly offering a “Breeder of the Year” award in addition to the award given to the breeder of the dog who wins the Specialty. Carl Gomes has mentioned this previously to LaJoye via telephone. A committee would need to be formed to decide who would be a recipient, and Board approved criteria developed. This proposal is late to be carried out for the Atlanta National, but possibly for the 2011 show. Kelly offered that the BTCA currently has 2 large projects – Futurity and Boston of the Year – and her feeling is attention should be giving to these existing programs. Board members agreed. McCollough thought to table this

discussion to a future meeting after the National in May. Location of 2011 National Specialty – LaJoye provided the Board a brief overview of the 3 host clubs interested in hosting the National 2011. The Golden Gate Boston Terrier Club is proposing the location of Reno, Nevada at the Grand Sierra Resort. Each member of the Board was mailed a packet on the hotel. Room charges will be $49, the hotel offers no charge for the use of the 20,000 sq ft ballroom, and no set up charges. The Western Washington club would hold the show in either Seattle at the Doubletree Seattle Airport Hotel or in Tacoma at the Convention Center, which has an attached hotel. Room rates are $99 and the charge for the use of the 7,000 sq ft ballroom is $500. Lastly, Milwaukee offered to host again with room rates of $99 and in the same location held as 2 years before. The next judge in line for 2011 will be John Connelly. LaJoye would like to send correspondence immediately to him to check availability of the given dates. At the Grand Sierra in Reno, LaJoye suggested every event could be held inside the ballroom. Gastley wanted to emphasize however the importance of flooring for Agility, and would prefer to not have the event on carpet unless extensive rubber matting can take place. The facility should have grounds on site where Agility can be held if the matting isn’t an option. The priority of granting the National will be with the club who hasn’t hosted this event. Both clubs have hosted: Western Washington co-hosted in Portland and the
Golden Gate Club hosted in 1986. Based on information presented, LaJoye made a motion for the Golden Gate BTC to host the 2011 National at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nevada. Stoll seconded and motion carried unanimously. Nominating Slate for 2010 - Stoll read the Nominating slate and has sent a copy to Bradley. Committee members were Susan Krouse, Donna Nardi, Jason Luciano, and Tim Snyder. Kelly headed the discussion on the latest process of nominating committee selection, referencing the BTCA Constitution and Bylaws. Her concern was the lack of Board discussion and approval- possibly raising concern within the membership. McCollough maintained she appointed Stoll as the Chairman and then she in turn selected the committee, yet Kelly felt there was no direct Board input and her unease is how this action might be viewed by club membership. LaJoye made a motion to clarify how McCollough requested the topic of “Nominating Committee” be placed on the agenda for the next regular Board meeting and it was not included. This was not a deliberate oversight, but a simple failure to include a topic on an agenda. With less scheduled meetings, how the slate selection was handled this year was an alternate way to handle business i.e. the time-line situation and individuals needing to be selected and notified. Nix seconded, motion carried unanimously. New Member Applications / Membership – LaJoye sent ballots
to the Board with member applications for voting, but has 6 additional applications he has mailed which are in need of a second round of voting. New members will be announced at the next meeting. Jackson questioned LaJoye about a couple from New Jersey named Bell, who completed an application and have yet to receive any further information. She states the application was submitted at the National and yet their check has not cleared. LaJoye will review his records to investigate this claim and check if the application is in his possession. McCollough left the conference at 9:55 p.m. (EST) Two Affiliate Clubs have not paid dues, namely the Houston and Pennsylvania clubs. Nix reported that the Western Pennsylvania club has paid dues but Houston has not. LaJoye will contact the Houston club and request they submit their Constitution, Bylaws and Membership Roster along with a check to Nix. If submitted timely, the club can be granted reinstatement at the next meeting. LaJoye made a motion to reinstate the Western Pennsylvania club based on their current status of dues payment. Seconded by Jackson. Motion passed unanimously. The next Board meeting will take place January 26, 2010. A motion was made by LaJoye to adjourn, seconded by Gastley. Meeting adjourned at 10:05 p.m. (EST). Respectfully submitted, Lynda Bradley BTCA Recording Secretary

22 New AKC TITLE
* Grand Champion
AKC Grand Champion On May 12, 2010 the Grand Championship competition will start concurrent with the implementation of the 2010-2011 Schedule of Points. Competition for this new title will be judged concurrently with Best of Breed competition at both all-breed and specialty shows. Why does AKC offer Grand Champion? For many owners there is little incentive to continue to exhibit dogs that have completed their championship title. All exhibitors do not have the financial means or desire to extensively campaign a dog in pursuit of top rankings. This title permits quality dogs to be recognized without extensive travel as the Grand Champion title can be earned at all shows with Best of Breed competition. How does a dog earn the Grand Champion title? Only Champions are eligible to earn Grand Championship points. (This includes dogs that are “moved up” to Best of Breed competition from completing the requirements for their CH title at a previous show.) Best of Breed, Best of Opposite Sex, Select Dog and Select Bitch are eligible to earn Grand Championship Points. Select Dog and Select Bitch are Champions that were recognized as the top quality of their sex after BOB and BOS have been awarded. Judges need not award Grand Championship points to dogs that in their opinion are not worthy of the award. Grand Championship points are earned using the same schedule of points as is used for Championship points and the title requires: • Twenty five Grand Champion points including, • three “majors” (three or more points) won under three different judges, • and at least one or more of these points won under a fourth judge. • They must also have defeated at least one other AKC Champion at three shows.
How are Grand Championship points determined? • Grand Championship Points are determined using the schedule of points for each breed in each division. However, all dogs defeated by BOB, BOS, Select Dog or Select Bitch will be counted in the computation. Grand Champion points may be awarded to eligible dogs as follows: • Best of Breed – All dogs of the both sexes in the breed or variety exhibited in the regular classes and Best of Breed competition will be counted. • Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed - All dogs of the same sex in the breed or variety exhibited in the regular classes and Best of Breed competition will be counted. • Select Dog or Select Bitch – One dog less that the number of dogs of the same sex in the breed or variety exhibited in the regular classes and Best of Breed competition will be counted. • Champions of Record including champions that are non-regular class winners or dogs that have been “moved up” to Best of Breed competition for the show are the only dogs eligible for Grand Championship points. Although class dogs can win BOB or BOS, they have not yet obtained their CH title and are not eligible for Grand Champion competition. (Dogs entered in non-regular classes are not counted in the computation of Championship or Grand Championship points.) How does the Grand Champion competition affect the show-giving club? Based on the enthusiastic exhibitors’ comments, we anticipate a significant increase in the entry of champions competing for Grand Championship points at both all-breed and specialty shows. The only increased expense

Marcia Jongsma, of Cobweb’s Boston passed away on January 5, 2010 after suffering a massive heart attack on Dec 26. She left behind nine Bostons who were her pride and joy. During her admittance to the hospital she made one of her last calls to assure that her little ones had immediate care. Her two sisters and friends rallied to make sure Beau, Cookie, Raisen, Destinae, Star, Angel, Glory, Tex and Cocoa have loving homes. Marcia began her love of Bostons early in life and became a serious AKC conformation competitor when she finished her first champion, Beau. Besides her full life with her dogs, Marcia was a semi retired nurse, an active antique dealer in Traverse City and an avid bird watcher who participated in the
National spring bird count. She was an active member of Clusters and Golden Globes, in addition to being a member of the BTCA and the Detroit Boston Terrier club. Under her “all business” exterior there was a sensitive, compassionate soul who very few people knew. She was a dear friend who will be missed. --Glenna Sprague DVM
Canine Hereditary Cancer Consortium To study canine cancer, a Canine Hereditary Cancer Consortium (CHCC) was established. The CHCC will take advantage of new genetic resources and technologies that have been developed at Van Andel Research Institute to develop genetic screens, diagnostic tests, and treatments for hereditary canine cancers as well as gain insight into the biology of human disease. CHCC will analyze collected DNA and RNA samples from dogs for genetic patterns that are associated with this disease. These patterns may form the basis of genetic tests that can tell us whether a particular dog is a carrier of a defective gene
that will cause cancer. Also, these studies may provide important clues about cancer in people. The CHCC is soliciting the assistance of dog owners to help us collect blood and tumor samples for their research. If your dog is afflicted with cancer and you would like to donate samples, please contact CHCC at 616-234-5569 (phone) or 616-234-5795 (fax) or send an e-mail CHCC@vai.org. You can also help support this research by donating funds to support the CHCC. For more information visit www.vai.org/helpingdogs.

Never Promise me a Rose Garden! CH Lumberjack’s Classic Masterpi1 1
Favor is my 3 1/2 month old male Boston Terrier puppy. He had a month history of poor appetite and periodic loose stools. The night before his projectile vomiting began, he did not eat his dinner and spit up some water. By the next morning he was very depressed, unable to hold anything down and had a low grade fever. I put him on IV fluids, antibiotics and anti emetics but he continued to vomit. Upon abdominal palpation, I could feel a firm mass in his intestine and I knew he was in trouble. This led to an emergency abdominal exploratory and a bowel resection that evening. He lost 1 1/2 inches of his large intestine due to a blockage. It was directly related to something he had swallowed. He had
3/15/10 11:29:11 PM
contracted Rose Gardener’s Disease or “Sporotrichosis.” It is caused by a fungus, Sporothrix schenckii that can enter by a puncture from a rose bush thorn. In people it usually causes pus pockets called granulomas in the skin or if inhaled, the granulomas occur in lung tissue. In rare cases, such as Favor’s case, it can cause a granuloma in the wall of the intestine which can lead to a blockage. According to medical literature it can take 1-12 weeks for the granulomas to appear. As with most puppies there was a history of Favor chewing on things, including a rose bush stem a month earlier. This stem apparently had a thorn that punctured his intestine on it’s way thru weeks before the granuloma occurred. Normally
Sporotrichosis is treated orally with the antifungal Itraconazole, but in the case of an intestinal blockage, surgical intervention is the treatment… so as a “favor” to me and your dogs, please don’t promise me a rose garden and eliminate or fence off any rose bushes or other thorny bushes from your dog yards! (So far Favor is recouping nicely, but what an odd case!) --Glenna Sprague DVM Doc’s Bostons

2010 Boston Terrier Health Survey http://www.offa.org/surveys/survey_boston.html
34 Boston Terrier
* Health survey
The Boston Terrier Club of America, Inc., Health Committee is conducting a survey to gather information on the health of our wonderful breed. The survey will be available for responses throughout 2010 and will provide information vital to the Health Committee’s work in sponsoring research and education to further the health of all Boston terriers. As BTCA members, many of you have responded to previous health surveys such as those conducted in 1989-90 and 2000. Technological advances along with cooperative work be-
tween breed parent club health committees, the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation, and the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals have allowed the BTCA Health Committee to simplify the survey response process and address confidentiality concerns with the goal of obtaining greater participation in the survey process from Boston terrier breeders and owners. The purpose of the survey is to gather information that will lead to a better understanding of the health status of Boston

SURVEY terriers today. Information gathered in previous surveys allowed your health committee to direct funding to research that addressed the most common and/or most serious health issues in the breed. Comparison of results from the current survey with those of past surveys will allow us to recognize changes in the health status of our breed over the years. Those changes may include reduced occurrence of conditions for which testing of breeding stock is now possible, indicating that our breeders are taking advantage of those tests and using the results judiciously to improve the health of the breed. But just as importantly the comparisons can detect the emergence or increase of other problems that need to be addressed through educational and research programs. Confidentiality is always a great concern. Breeders are worried about “witch hunts” and “finger pointing”. Rest assured that this is not a situation unique to the Boston terrier breed. We have all witnessed the impact of the rumor mill in some aspect of our lives, so concern about confidentiality of responses to health surveys is understandable. To address this prevalent concern, the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) has partnered with the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation and the breed parent clubs to offer on-line health surveys that guarantee complete confidentiality to all respondents. Each parent club health committee formulates its own survey questions, so the information gathered is what is most important to that specific breed. OFA personnel receive the surveys
from each parent club and then enter them into an on-line, internet based survey tool. When you respond to the survey in the online format there is absolutely no way for anyone to know which responses are yours. You are not asked for the name of the dog, your kennel name, or your own name. No registration numbers or any other identifying information is collected. Who should respond to the 2010 BTCA Health Survey? Everyone who owns or owned a Boston terrier from 2000 to 2010 should respond to the survey. Responses are needed from breeders, pet owners, those who foster dogs for rescue groups, and those who enter their dogs in various competitive events (conformation, obedience, rally, agility, fly ball, weight pulling, etc.). Information is needed about the health of ALL Bostons, not just those deemed to be show or breeding quality dogs. As BTCA members, many of you have placed puppies in show or pet homes. Please contact those owners and ask them to complete the survey for their dog(s) or to give you all of the health information for their dogs so that you may respond for those dogs. If you co-own a dog you and the coowner should decide which of you will respond for the co-owned dog. What information should I have in hand when I begin the survey? You will need the health records or information for the specific dog for which you are answering. You will complete the survey one time for each dog that you have owned during the survey period. I own or have bred multiple dogs. Which ones should I include in my survey responses? ALL of them. Often owners do not respond
to health surveys if their dogs do not have health problems. For the survey to give the best possible information about the health status of Boston terriers we need to know about all of the perfectly healthy dogs as well as those who do have health problems. How long does it take to complete the survey for my dog? If your dog has had no health problems you should be able to complete the survey within approximately five (5) minutes. To make the survey as efficient as possible, you are asked early in the survey if your dog has any issues in a number of categories (skin, digestive, respiratory, temperament, breeding, etc.). You will answer yes or no for each of the categories. If you indicate that your dog has experienced a respiratory problem or condition but answer “no” for all of the other categories, you will be asked more in-depth information about the respiratory problem/condition but you will not be asked about any of the other categories. If you have multiple dogs you may choose to answer for one dog today and then return to answer for other dogs at other times. There is no need to respond for every dog in one sitting. How do I access the survey? The on-line survey is accessible from the OFA main web page (www.offa.org) or by using this direct link: http://www.offa.org/ surveys/survey_boston.html What if I don’t have an internet connection or computer access? Am I excluded from participating in the survey? Absolutely not! If you wish to complete the survey in a printed form then you may do so. Printed survey forms will be available at the

SURVEY BTCA Health Committee silent auction and information tables during the National Specialty Show in Atlanta during May, 2010. You may pick up as many copies as you like at that time. Sonya Baird, who served as chair of the survey committee, will be on hand there to answer any questions as well. If you prefer to receive printed copies of the survey by mail simply contact: Sonya Baird, (662) 615-3940, BTCA Health Survey, 2165 Bent Tree Rd., sonyabaird@ bellsouth.net, Starkville, MS 39759. Please indicate the number of copies that you need and your mailing address when you make the request. The printed copies of the survey will be mailed to you promptly. When you have completed the printed survey, simply return it to
the same address. In order to address confidentiality concerns, Sonya Baird has assured the BTCA Board of Directors that she will not maintain a list of people to whom surveys are mailed and will not keep any information regarding return addresses or postmarks of returned printed surveys. When returning surveys Sonya’s address may be used in place of your own for the return address. All envelopes will be shredded immediately and only the completed printed surveys will be kept. Sonya will periodically enter responses from the printed surveys into the on-line system so that all data is tallied in one system. After data from printed surveys has been entered into this system, the printed copies will be shredded for disposal.
How can I find out the results of the 2010 BTCA Health Survey? When you go to the survey website there is an option to view the survey results. This allows anyone to see the completely collated results from all responses up to that time. In January 2011 when the survey has concluded, the final results will be compiled and printed in a 2011 issue of the Coast to Coast. YOU are the most vital element in the effectiveness and success of the health survey. You love Boston terriers; why else would you be a member of the BTCA? Please take the time to respond to the health survey and to do your part in ensuring that your BTCA Health Committee has the best information possible as we all work to maintain and improve the health of our breed.
This year the Boston Terrier Club of America Health Committee will be hosting TWO auctions! We are offering antiques, collectables and crafts featuring Boston Terrier’s. Last year the tables were jam packed with all sorts of goodies and brought in 150 donations, with a total of $2,044.44 earned. The event offers the Health Committee a chance to earn some much-needed money for future projects to help with health-related issues in the Boston Terrier Breed. In the past the money raised has been used to help fund grants that have been approved by the Canine Health Foundation for research in cancer, brain tumor, vaccine allergic reactions, patellas and juvenile cataract research.
Time for action! Please email your pledge to donate an item to Leasa at knotybostons@yahoo.com. The first fabulous auction will open sweeps morning and ends 30 minutes after sweeps. The second auction will run during the regular classes for dogs and bitches and end 30 minutes after winner bitch. The 2010 National Specialty will be on May 18-21, 2010 at the Holiday Inn Select (Perimeter) in Atlanta, GA. The preliminary schedule is as follows: Monday, May 17th, Host Club Specialty Tuesday, May 18th, Futurity Wednesday, May 19th, Performance events, Sweepstakes, BTCA Top Boston Competition Thursday, May 20th-Regular Classes (WD and WB) Friday, May 21st, Best of Breed, Non-

For donations to the BTCA Health Committee please email Leasa at knotybostons@yahoo.com. Any item large or small is most welcome. Anything from antiques and collectables to hand-painted crafts, ceramics, wooded items, knitted item, cross stitching, sewed item, bag, jewelry, dish, table, stool, box, old, new any thing will do.
