President’s
Message
Dear Friends
The holiday season has begun. The hustle and bustle are upon us.
Baking, shopping, decorating, parties, and renewing old friendships are just a few of the many tasks which are part of the season. Let
us not forget our four-footed friends. Give them the time and love they deserve.
Amidst all this hectic time let us not forget the true reason for
the season.
Happy Holiday Season Hug your Boston

Eleanore Vetter with her boston Pudgy
From the
Editor
It’s puppy season here. My friend just whelped her first litter of bulldogs four weeks after I had my first litter of
boston terriers. I stayed over at her house while her husband was up-north hunting. We stayed up all night taking care of
our puppies, reading books, eating and watching movies. How lucky are we that we can share this experience together?
I look forward to giving our Coast to Coast a new look and feel. Something fresh. If you have suggestions, please drop me an email at c2c@gunthergraphics.com.
Brook W. Berth
I chose to put in a picture of my granny with her boston terrier, Pudgy for my first issue as editor. When I was in high school, my mom wanted a little dog. She had gotten her mother a Lhasa Apso when she was seventeen, but brushing long dog hair wasn’t as fun as she had imagined. My mom remembered her grandma telling stories of her very smart but naughty little boston terriers. Rollie was our families first boston. In college, I adopted a 3 year old boston Gunther. That’s how I decided on my favorite breed.

Health Committee: Health Certification Program It is that time of year again to post a reminder to members of the BTCA about submitting your application and Certificates to me for the 2009 BTCA Health Committee, Health Certification Program. The Gold or Silver Level Certificate will once again be presented at our Awards Banquet at the 2009 BTCA Nationals held in Southbury, CT. This special recognition for our Boston Terriers, and is especially important for the future health of our Breed. How wonderful it would be to see all the Veterans, 7 years of age or older, receive this special recognition, with it being noted on the award that they are a Veteran? Thank you to those of you that have already sent me your applications. The Cut off date for all tests to be current and used for the 2009 Award Certificate is December 31, 2008. The Health Certificates are valid for 1 year from date of issue. With OFA requiring that all permanent identification of dogs be VERIFIED by your Vet, please take the opportunity to have that form completed while having your Vet do their Health Examination. www.offa.org/vpiapp_bw.pdf Reminder: Permanent Identification should be implemented prior to any testing. Please mail PHOTO COPIES of these official Certificates, along with the ORIGINAL copy of your BTCA Physical Exam Form completed by your local Veterinarian. All applications should be postmarked no later than January 31, 2009. We updated this Exam Form in 2007 and only the new form will be accepted as your application. This program is available to all BTCA members in good standing with the club. With your appropriate documentation, please send a money order or check for $5.00 made out to: “BTCA” and marked for “Certification” and mail it to: Sue LeCalsey, BTCA Health Committee, 4125 Dollar Lane, DePere WI 54115-8790.
Summary of requirements for each level are as follows: Silver Certificate: 1. Have your veterinarian complete the BTCA Health Examination form (Send the ORIGINAL copy). The form is located at: www. bostonterrierclubofamerica.org/ BTCAExaminationForm.pdf 2. Send COPY of CERF Certificate. 3. Send COPY of OFA Patella Certificate. Gold Certificate: In addition to the 3 previous documents, you must send a COPY of your OFA BAER Certificate. CHIC Certificate: You will automatically receive your CHIC Certificate after your results for the CERF, OFA Patella and OFA BAER Tests have been registered with CERF and OFA. No additional fee is required for the CHIC Certificate. BAER Test Sites may be located at www.lsu.edu/deafness/baersite.htm. The BAER (Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response) test needs to be performed only once in a dog’s life, sometime after it is 35 days of age. OFA recommends this test should be performed by a Board Certified Veterinary Neurologist, but will accept results from experienced veterinarians and audiologists. Bilateral hearing PASSES. Unilateral or bilateral deafness FAILS. Application fee is $15.00 per dog unless you qualify for the Litter Rate of $30.00 for 3 or more littermates. Kennel Rate is $7.50 for 5 or more dogs owned by the same person. Equivocal and affected dogs are registered at No Charge. CERF Test Sites may be located at www.vmdb.org/clinic.html Puppies can be examined as early as 8 weeks of age and CERF will also register them at that time. Send owners copy of the physician completed
CERF Exam form in with your $15.00 fee. Re-certification charge is $8.00. Permanent Identification at time of exam of your dog (must be by microchip, tattoo or DNA profile) is required as of 1/1/01 to register your dog. Certification is good for 1 year from date of exam. Dogs should be CERF’d annually. Patella Examination form can be located at www.offa.org/plappbw.pdf. The Patella Examination is performed on dogs 12 months or older by your veterinarian and should be registered in the Patellar Luxation Database with OFA. Puppies examined younger than 12 months will be treated as Consultations and no OFA breed numbers will be assigned. Fee for dogs over 12 months of age is $15.00. The Litter Rate of $30.00 applies to 3 or more submitted together. The Kennel Rate of $7.50 applies to 5 or more submitted together, owned/coowned by the same person. Patella’s should be re-examined bi-annually and there is no charge for re-submitting biannual results to OFA. Miscellaneous Web Sites to obtain additional information about each test or Program: BAER www.offa.org/deafbaer.html CERF www.vmdb.org/cerf.html OFFA www.offa.org/geneinfo.html CHIC www.caninehealthinfo.org For more information on each test, please go to the BTCA Web Site under the Health Committee section. Thank you in advance to everyone that cares enough about the future of this wonderful breed to do these Health Tests and for going the extra mile and submitting your results to OFA. unny was the number one Boston in 1991, all systems, and the number one Boston in Group wins in 1992. He was in the top 10 in 1990 and 1993. He had 19 Group Firsts and 16 Specialty Breed wins with numerous Group placing’s. Sunny was owner-handled always by Sharon Saberton. He was honored to get Best of Breed at Westminster in 1991 and at AKC’s first Invitational held in Baltimore, MD in 1992. There were only 2 Boston’s that qualified and Sunny got a Group 3. That was prestigious honor. The rules at that Invitational were a lot different at in 1992 than they are currently. In Sunny’s limited breedings, he has produced 49 Champions, many of them wining and placing in Group. One was awarded a Best In Show. He is the sire of CH Donnybrook’s Aramis, Chief, who was the number one Boston in and the Best Of Breed winner at the BTCA National in 2004. Chief also won Best Of Breed at Westminster in 2005. Sunny’s breeders were Marianne Sheehan and Mary Jo Schrieman who were good friends of Saberton’s. They asked her for advise hen breeding some of their bitches. Breeding Sunny’s dam, CH Beacon’s Tiny Darling, to CH Do-Go Georges Buddy Of Rudy was Saberton’s idea. All but one from those breeding’s finished their Championship. Editor’s Note: We are adding a new department article to the Coast to Coast. The Influential Sire/Dam will feature a boston terrier that has made its mark on the breed. Anyone who had dogs out of this featured dog will have the opportunity to make the C2C an issue to be respected; the pages following future article will be available for sale to advertise the “Get” out of this paticular dog. (see advertising rates) Look for a dog from your pedigree or kennel to be featured in a future issue. Ch Staley’s El-Bo Showman will be featured in the March issue of the Coast to Coast.

August 8, 2008 Grant Park, South Milwaukee Beautiful weather and lots of great dogs graced the new show site. The site was beautifully wooded with lots of shade and an added bonus of a view of Lake CLUB OF Michigan. With the addition of another all breed show this weekend (Cudahy and Racine Kennel Clubs) majors held all four days in Bostons. A huge raffle was held to support rescue efforts of the club, with thanks to all club members who contributed such a wide assortment of prizes. Deb Chivicek found contributors for an assortment of dog stuff to include in a goody bag for each exhibitor. Lots of snacks were available throughout the show for exhibitors and spectators. This year the show was dedicated to The Memory of All The Bostons Our Club Members Have Lost. Club members submitted pictures of a Boston they owned that has left us in the past year. These photos were included on the dedication page in our catalog. Thank you to all who supported the club with time, talent, entries, and donations. The show committee looks forward to seeing you next year at our fall show.

The hotel, Crown Plaza in Southbury, CT is secured. The Sweeps judge is Sharon Saberton and the Conformation judge is Sari Tietjen. Tietjen will charge BTCA $3 per dog and 3 nights hotel room. There will be nominal transportation fees since she doesn’t live far from the show grounds. BTCA will pay for 1 night’s hotel stay for the Sweeps judge. Terry reports that we have not secured a show superintendent yet but that she hopes to have that accomplished by Sept. 1, 2008. OB/Rally judge is Dr.. Ellen J. Adomells who will charge the club $100 for a 5-hour day. Extra fees will apply if the OB/Rally show goes over 5 hours. Marby Kelly will be the Show Secretary. Discussion regarding show grounds for OB/ Rally, motion by Brewer to pay $500 to Paws N Effect for agility facility rental, seconded by Fletcher, Motion approved. Terry reports that the profit from the 2008 show is $10,600 and she thanked the board for their support. For the 2009 show,
the hotel is giving 1 comp room per 40 “consumed and actualized” rooms reserved. The hotel has also offered Donna Nardi, Charlotte Comstock & Marcia Terry each a 5-night comp room, separate from the contract with BTCA. The hospitality room is also comp’d. The show committee left the meeting at approx. 8:40 p.m. Board Reports President - McCollough reports that she is currently hospitalized and can only stay in the meeting for a short while. She reminded everyone, especially the new board members that no agenda business is to be discussed until the minutes are approved. She emphasized that there is to be no internet discussion regarding club business. She added that she is appointing Joyce Fletcher as the Nominating Committee Chairman. In regards to new members being voted in, she asked that board members immediately send in their secret ballots as it is not fair to prospective members if there aren’t enough votes to count in their favor. Further, Jackson proposed that we note which board members have voted so the members know which board members are participating in the voting process. McCollough turned the meeting over to Fletcher at 8:51 p.m. Vice President – Fletcher contacted Lisa LaMere who will take care of the Meet the Breed booth at the Eukanuba show.
Recording Secretary – Motion to approve the minutes of 6-11-08 as written by Jackson, seconded by Nix. Motion approved. Anaya reports that the master roster is not yet matching the roster that Nix maintains and that Anaya will print out the master roster to send to Nix to compare to his so that they both match. Corresponding Secretary – LaJoye received mail from the AKC. The first does not pertain to BTCA as we don’t hold more than nine agility trials per year. The second correspondence from AKC was in regards to placing and ad in the Eukanuba Championship catalog. Motion by Jackson to spend $140 for a full-page ad in the Eukanuba catalog, seconded by Gastley, motion approved. LaJoye to design the ad and will have the board approve it. Letter received by Valley of the Sun Affiliate Club that their Board of Directors wishes to dissolve the club due to lack of interest from their general membership. Fletcher added that she received correspondence from the general membership of the Valley of the Sun club that they do not want the club to dissolve and are protesting to the AKC. Fletcher to work with interested members to see if the BTCA can help keep the club active. Anaya reported that the Golden Gate BTC is also in need of assistance since they only have 2 active members. Fletcher suggested GGBTC write an article for the C2C asking for BTCA members to assist.

LaJoye to contact Byron Elder, Affiliate Club Chair in regards to the Affiliate Clubs submitting a list of their officers and members each year. LaJoye to also contact Golden Gate BTC to see how BTCA can assist. Fletcher to contact AKC to see if they have any recommendations on assisting Affiliate Clubs. Treasurer’s Report - The balance as of 7/31/08 is $65,612.72. Nix reported his dissatisfaction with the board in relaying their gratitude for his services. Nix reports that he sent out over 70 membership dues reminders in mid-August to all members and Affiliate Clubs that have not yet paid. Proposed new members - Brief discussion on proposed new members, board members need to mail their secret ballots to LaJoye asap. Unfinished Business Budgets – Tabled until next meeting. Comp Rooms – Discussion regarding BTCA comp’ing rooms to certain individuals that are required to be at the show on certain dates. Brewer made a motion that we comp 4-nights each to the Show Chair & his/her assistant, 2 comp nights each to the Judge’s Education Chair and his/her assistant and 4-nights to the Show Secretary at the national show each year. Seconded by LaJoye, motion approved. Coast to Coast – Brewer reports that the BTCA is in violation of its Bylaws because the Annual Meeting minutes were not distributed to the membership within 30 days of the meeting. If reported to AKC, the BTCA could incur sanctions. The minutes are normally printed and distributed to the membership via the
newsletter but as per an email from the newsletter editor the newsletter will be delayed because of “personal issues”. Discussion regarding a recent email from the newsletter editor requesting a replacement. Fletcher to call Pamela Preston and find out if the delayed issue of the newsletter is due to be sent out soon or not. If not, Anaya will have to mail out the minutes to each member right away. LaJoye to contact Brook Berth to see if she’s interested in taking over the newsletter. BTCA Website – Anaya, who is the BTCA Website Committee Chair, reported her findings regarding having the BTCA website reconstructed. A brief presentation was made which included prices and samples from three different Web Designers. Ideas for a better website were shared and LaJoye motioned to authorize Anaya to move forward with Prize WebWorks, Inc., then to have the Board review the contract, and if approved, further authorize Anaya to work with Prize WebWorks and the rest of the website committee to approve the new website design. Anaya to act as the BTCA’s new “Web Editor”. Seconded by Jackson, motion approved. Anaya to forward contract to all board members to review. New Business Nominating Committee – Fletcher was appointed as the Nominating Committee Chair, brief discussion on who else could sit on the committee. Motion by Jackson to ask Julie Haddy & Cindy Adams to sit on the nominating committee and have Linda Alexander and Gwenn Weyandt as alternates. Seconded by Jett, motion approved. Members Dropped in Error – Stoll shared her thoughts on one member who was dropped from membership
because her dues check was never received by the Treasurer. Fletcher explained that there was nothing the Board could do in regards to this matter (since over a year has lapsed since she was dropped from membership). There was also a question about a member who is denied membership, if they could re-apply immediately or if they had to wait for the Annual Meeting to have the general membership vote. The Bylaws are not clear, LaJoye to call AKC to clarify. 2009 National Specialty Dedication – Brewer motioned to dedicate the 2009 National Specialty to Rhoda Pillion, seconded by LaJoye, motion approved. Membership Roster – Tabled until the next meeting. 2010 National Specialty – Tabled until the next meeting. New AKC Boston Terrier Breed Video – Tabled until the next meeting. Approved Board Minutes Boston Terrier Club of America, Inc. June 17th, 2008 President McCollough called the meeting to order at 8:05 p.m. (EST). Present were: Ola Jeanne McCollough, Joyce Fletcher, Melany Anaya, Sharon Stoll, Linda Jett, Richard Nix, and Leanna Terrill. Pat Kennedy, Kathleen Brewer, Lloyd Amodei, Peggy Jackson and AKC Delegate Marby Kelly were absent.
Vice President – No report.
Corresponding Secretary – Fletcher is in the process of writing letters to the outgoing board members, thanking them for their service. Fletcher will also send welcoming letters to the incoming board. Letters will also go out to the judges who judged at the national, and to new members recently voted into membership. Fletcher received a packet and letter from AKC that the national specialty show had been processed. Fletcher to forward information pertaining to the 2009 show to Marcia Terry, the Show Chairman.
Recording Secretary – Motion to approve the minutes of 5-19-08 as corrected by Jett, seconded by Nix. Motion approved. Anaya reports that the master roster is not updated because she has not received the address corrections submitted by members from Nix yet. It was also noted that a mailing list Nix typed (for directory & dues notices purposes) is not yet matching the master roster (that Anaya maintains) and that Nix and Anaya will work to make sure both are identical. Nix added that he has only received approx. 55% of the dues from the members as of this date. A reminder is to be added to the website that dues are due by June 30, 2008.
Treasurer’s Report - The current balance is $64,924.27. There is approx. $2800 in “limbo” with the hotel and the show chairman will need to resolve that issue with them. There was a brief discussion about a $495 “chair clean up” the club was charged that will need to resolved. Nix also reports that there are 6 “comp” rooms in question and that he has not yet received the final bill for the show. It appears at this point that approx. $13,900 is the profit from the show. There is approx. $1200-$1500 that hasn’t cleared yet. Nix reported that $800 is still due from the Milwaukee Club.
Board Reports President - McCollough reports that she feels the 2008 National Specialty was a great success and that plans for the 2009 show are now in the works.
Nix intends to send out membership dues reminders in midAugust to all members and Affiliate Clubs that have not yet paid. Proposed new members - Brief discussion on 3 proposed new members, board members need to mail their secret ballots to Fletcher asap. Unfinished Business Membership Chair – McCollough spoke with current Membership Chair Peg Selvey, who would like to be relieved from her duties. Fletcher proposed Allison Alison take over the position effective July 1, 2008, seconded by Stoll, motion approved. Website – Fletcher proposed we look at using an outside source to maintain the BTCA website and that she, Anaya & Jett work together as a committee on this project. One source Fletcher would like to consider costs $1250 to set up the website and $100 per month to maintain. It was also noted that a current club member had offered their services. Anaya suggested we look closely at contracts, fees and samples from any web designer we are considering. Committee will work together to gather information and report back to the board at the next board meeting.

Yearly Audit of Books – Nix to complete before the first of the year. It was noted that Wanda Goodson suggested we write a formal letter to the trustees of the Charitable Trust each year asking that they either return the funds back to the BTCA or they donate them to the AKC Advisory Fund (as previously requested). New Business Photographer – National Show – McCollough reported that there were no major problems, that it seemed the photographer did a good job, the rates were reasonable, but that it would be ideal if the photographer would use a better quality paper next year. Catalogs – National Show - Brief discussion regarding the catalogs and when AKC says is the earliest they can be distributed. AKC says Sweeps/OB/Rally/Agility are not considered conformation events and therefore catalogs (that include regular classes) can not be sold prior to judging of the regular classes (which is when Sweeps/ OB/Rally/Agility are judged). AKC recommended either printing a separate catalog for those events or to print tear sheets that can later be adhered to the regular catalog. Fletcher to speak with Marcia Terry to clarify. Nix motion that we print 2 separate catalogs in order to comply with AKC rules. Seconded by Stoll. Motion approved.
Liaison to Board – Education – Stoll volunteered to be the Education Liaison to the Board. Dog of the Year & Futurity – Nix reports that Ken Roux is taking donations for these events, that the checks are made payable to the BTCA which will be deposited into a CD. The committee for these events will handle the collection of checks but the checks will need to be sent to Nix so that he can open a CD. Motion by Fletcher that all funding for the Top Boston of the Year and Futurity be sent to the BTCA Treasurer and that he/she work with the Committee Chairperson according to the Bylaws. Seconded by Stoll, motion approved. Budgets – Postponed until new board is seated. New Members –Tamara Parashos (OR); Jamie Allen (TX); James Iceuogle (IL); WELCOME! Next board meeting August 19, 2008.

A meeting, after some confusion again as last year, of Affiliate Clubs was held at Wyndham of Milwaukee Convention Center on Wednesday, May 21, 2008. Affiliate Clubs represented at this meeting were: BTC of LA, BTC of CT, BTC of Detroit, BTC of Cincinnati, BTC of MD, BTC of Miami, BTC of Milwaukee, BTC of New York, BTC of Western PA, BTC Western WA, Fl Suncoast BTC, Golden Gate BTC, Greater Atlanta BTC, Greater Houston BTC, Hawkeye BTC, Heartland BTC, Metro Washington BTC, Minnesota BTC, Pasadena BTC, Sierra Gold BTC and Western BTC. BTC of Finland was also represented. Attendance was remarkable and has improved each year. Report of last years meeting was distributed along with articles on Peta (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals); Reprint of article from Dog News “Terrorist Among us? The Two Faces of Peta President Of BTCA, Ola Jean McCollough gave a brief warm welcome to all. Carl Gomes gave a progress report on judges education. Ken Roux gave a report on a futurity planned for 2010 along with top Boston awards program to be initiated in 2009. More details on these programs will be published later. Under new business, Venita Prater suggested that one meeting a year of Affiliates was not often enough. It was suggested that an Affiliate Club web site and list be established for Clubs to post and discuss their activities throughout the year. Cecelia Crouchet and Blair Barret volunteered to initiate such a program and Venita volunteered to help obtain the email contacts for each club. This is a work currently in progress. Celie will be in charge of this web site development. Web site set up at present is: BTCA-AffiliateClubs@ googlegroups.com Every Affiliate Club is encouraged to contact Celie at keanbostons@hotmail.com. Blair may be contacted at bcbarrett@ gmail.com. Venita may be reached at Vprater@aol.com. Of course copies of any or all may be sent to me at Elderreanea@aol.com. The communications potential for Affiliate Clubs is enormous. Many Affiliate Clubs have excellent newsletters. There may be a way where these newsletters can be shared with all Affiliates. That is something we may want to consider. All your ideas and suggestions are welcomed. Please help by getting involved with this project.

New BTCA Website BIG news!!! The BTCA has contracted with a private web design company to update our current website! First off, thank you to long-time Webmaster and BTCA member Jeannie Thomason for donating her time and skills to keeping our website updated for the last several years! She has truly proven herself to be a “working” member of the BTCA! Now for the fun stuff, earlier this year the BTCA Board voted to hire an outside web design company to completely redesign the entire BTCA website. The Board looked at samples from three different web designers and chose a company called Prize Web Works, Inc. They build very “cleanlooking” websites and came with high recommendations from the West Highland White Terrier Club of America who also uses their services. To view samples of their work, visit their “portfolio” page: prizewebworks.com/clients.htm. The BTCA Board also voted to have me, Melany Anaya, be the new “Web Editor”. I will be responsible for the content on the website. All updates, requests, comments and such should be directed to me, either by email (coolbostons@hotmail.com)
or by telephone: 925-798-7165. I am the only contact for Prize Web Works, Inc. and all website changes must go through me. The new designer will begin working on the basics of the site and I will have the Board review it before the site gets uploaded to the internet. Please be patient while work is being done, it will be a “work in progress” for at least a few months and will eventually include some new and exciting features! My hope is to include some additional pages on the site, including a performance page, a futurity page, BT of the Year, an archive page that may also include past winners of the national specialty, an updated, easier to navigate health section and eventually a “members only” section. The sky’s the limit! I will be in touch with all committee chairs on a regular basis to see if their pages have current information or not but please feel free to contact me at any time. If any BTCA member has something they’d like to see on it just let me know, this is our site, let’s make it look the way we like it! Melany Anaya BTCA Web Editor

2009 BTCA National Trophies Trophy Chairman:
Jane F. Cole
It’s again time to request donations for the 2009 Nationals trophies. We would like to have nice trophies for our show, however, it’s up to us as members to come up with the funds to purchase our trophies. It is important to donate as soon as possible, so we’ll know what type of budget we’re working with in order to know what type of trophies we can afford to purchase. As an extra incentive to donate to the trophy fund, we are offering a free catalog for any donation of $40.00 or more. If you are unable to attend the nationals, a marked catalog will be sent to you. For anyone who won their class at last years Nationals or who won Best of Breed, Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed, Best of Winners, etc. and would like to sponsor that award for the 2009 Nationals, you will be given first chance to sponsor the
award if your donation is received by December 30. Otherwise, it will be a first come, first choice basis. For those who would like to have their donation sponsor a particular class, please send your first choice, second choice and third choice. All other donations will be listed simply as donating to the trophies. The following are sponsorships available: Best of Breed - $200 Best of Opposite Sex To Best of Breed- $150 Best of Winners - $150 Best Puppy - $100 Best Bred By Exhibitor - $100 Best American Bred - $100 Best Veteran - $100 Best Junior Handler - $100 Winners Dog - $100 Winners Bitch - $100 Reserve Winners Dog - $75 Reserve Winners Bitch - $75 Best in Sweepstakes - $100
Best of Opposite Sex To Best in Sweepstakes - $75 Entire class sponsorship - $50 (example: Puppy Dog 6-9 Month) To clear up any potential confusion, trophy sponsorships support the entire purchase of trophies. Not all classes will be sponsored (unfortunately), so not all trophies will be valued at the same amount as the sponsorship level. The sponsorship gets your name listed in the catalog as sponsoring a particular trophy.
Please make checks payable to: BTCA and note on the check that they are for the 2009 National Trophy Fund. Mail checks to: Richard Nix, 1201 Honeysuckle Drive, Watkinsville, GA 30677. Mail form to: Jane Cole, 1635 South Summit Drive, Holts Summit, MO 65043, gilja2@hotmail.com.

Performance - What is It All About? By Carolyn Gatsley
E
ver wondered, “What’s all the fuss about performance?” Today, people who do performance also show their dog in conformation and some are involved in responsible breeding. But what is it that gets these people fired up about performance? A short answer, the special bond that develops between handler and dog when they strive to compete as a team. The challenge of working together as a team is very rewarding to both the handler and the dog. The BTCA concentrates on AKC performance venues. The ones offered at our national specialty each year are agility, competitive obedience and rally obedience. Lets take a look at the agility venue. In brief, dog agility is sport in which a dog runs through a timed obstacle course as commanded by the handler. Agility training strengthens the bond between dog and handler plus provides fun and
exercise for both. AKC agility is open to dogs 15 months or older and there are three levels, Novice, Open and Excellent. Dogs compete according to their performance level. The courses and rules become more difficult at higher levels. The obstacles vary and consist of jumps, tunnels, contact obstacles and weave poles. Jumps can have decorative wings or be wingless. There is also a tire jump and in every novice class, a broad jump where the dog has to show it can also jump width. Each jump is set at the proper height or width which is determined by the height of the dog at the shoulder area at the top back. Dogs must clear the full height of the jump without knocking the bar. There are two type of tunnels, open tunnels which are long open tubes and ‘chutes’ which are open at one end and have collapse fabric tube at the other. Tunnels are assigned a specific entry end and dogs must enter the correct end of the tunnel. The contact obstacles are called so because of the yellow contact zones at each end. They consist of the Aframe, the dogwalk and the teeter [see-saw]. To perform these obstacles correctly, dogs must get at least one paw in the yellow contact zone when they descend the obstacle and they must ride the teeter down to the ground before stepping off of it. One of the most exciting and usually the most difficult to train is the weave poles. Dogs must enter to the right of the first pole [every time] and zig-zag through to the end. They must not miss a pole.
The agility judge designs the pattern of each course and referees the dog and handlers performance indicating faults with her hands. Each course is a unique combination of obstacles that have not been seen before by the handler. Numbers are placed beside the obstacles to show the course sequence and the handlers get a brief walk through to familiarize themselves with the course. They usually walk several times to plan their handling strategy. The dogs run the course individually off leash, with or without a collar. A ‘timer’ tells the handler when to begin and as each dog runs the judge sends fault hand signals to the ‘scribe’ which are noted on a sheet of paper. That information is given to a scorekeeper who then calculates the dogs final score. The dogs running in each class with no faults and the fastest time win placements of first through fourth. A new class was recently added to agility called FAST - Fifteen And Send Time. This is a game of strategy where the handler directs their dog over agility obstacles, accumulating points for each obstacle correctly completed. It demonstrates the willingness of a dog to work with its handler in a fast-paced atmosphere. We do not offer it at the national specialty yet but hope to in the future. All of this requires time and dedication. Anyone who has a dog and wants to play should research training facilities in their area. Go, watch and ask how you can get involved. You will not be sorry and your dog will love you for it!

Affiliate Clubs Dilemmas This article is being written to present fellow boston terrier fanciers the dilemmas we, not only affiliate clubs but all dog clubs in general, are facing today. Our first and foremost dilemma is membership. It seems that no one wants to be a club member these days. Does anyone stop to realize the costs involved in keeping a club going? I doubt that it is the member fee of $10 to $20 dollars per year. Perhaps it is the fact that no one wants to spend time in working in a club, which basically amounts to one specialty per year? For example our club, Golden Gate Boston Terrier Club has just over a handful of members, and we are on the brink of failure. There are many
other clubs facing the same situation. Listen up, this is serious! Not only the BTCA but all clubs need everyone’s support. I will give you our GGBTC expenses for an example: First our insurance policy of $600.00 per year; our annual specialty fee of $50.00 to the AKC; $100.00 to $300.00 for the ring; $15.00 charge per table; $.50 charge per chair; ring steward $50.00; judges hotel $300.00; show superintendent MBF charged us over $795.00. We still owed MBF $270.00 after a show of 42 entries. That doesn’t include the raffle, prizes and potluck. Not bad for a club with members paying a total of $160.00 in dues. Please consider supporting your local boston terrier club or consider
becoming an affiliate member of a club such as ours. Without your support you may not have a specialty or all-breed dog show to attend in the future. Golden Gate Boston Terrier Club invites you to become an affiliate member. Membership applications will be sent by request from lookoutremch@msn.com.
