AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship Award This year’s recipient of the Outstanding Sportsman award has been an excellent ambassador for the breed in the performance rings for the past several years. She was drawn to Bostons when researching breeds and was looking a smaller dog but one that was still sturdy & athletic. Once she had one, she was hooked. Although originally only looking for a nice pet, the versatility of the breed has converted her into a Boston aficionado. She now competes in agility, obedience, rally and is trying the conformation ring as well with her new puppy. Her passion for dogs has expanded to include a doggy bakery and opening a training school. In preparing for the performance rings with her Boston, she learned some new methods of training with positive reinforcement that worked better than the traditional methods. She says, “My first instructor told
Upcoming
me that the word “no” was not allowed in the classroom--now I had to figure out a way to tell my dog what I DID want, instead of constantly telling them “NO’” for what I DIDN’T want! The methods used in our class were all positive, although not permissive.” She has been able to forge excellent relationships with her dogs and take them to the highest levels competing at events such as AKC Agility Nationals, Eukanuba Agility Invitational and World Team tryouts, including placements and excellent finishes at several of these high profile events. Through all of her success with her dogs, she remains an examplary Sportsman. She is always there to support her fellow exhibitors with cheerful comments regardless of the outcome of their performance. She looks for the silver lining in her own runs when things don’t go as well as she

would have liked and remains humble when things do go well. The power of being positive describes her well. These qualities make Kelly Misegadis the AKC Outstanding Sportsmanship Award for 2009.

President’s
Message
Dear BTCA members,
Well, the Boston Terrier Club of America Speciality is finished
and put to bed for another year. For you that were there we certainly
had a great time. For those who could not make it this year you were greatly missed. Start making plans now to join us in Atlanta GA next year in 2010.
I wish to thank the Connecticut Club. They did a great job and
were wonderful hosts. I thank you so much for all your hard work, as does the rest of the Board.
Hug your Boston,

I often think of how fortunate I am. I have wonderful little boston terriers living at my house. I am able to take them almost everywhere with me. More often than not, on weekends, I am privileged to spend time with people that are also fanciers of these great little dogs. Then, once a year we all gather to the same spot, bring our little dogs and we have a ball. What a great year at Nationals. It was a nice drive from Wisconsin; I got to see more of the beautiful country. The host club did a tremendous job, I know it’s a lot of work. The new Boston Terrier of the Year went without a hitch and it was fantastic. There were fun parties to attend in the evening. The hotel and it’s staff were very pleasant. I met new friends and ate great food. I am now looking forward to, and saving for, Georgia’s National. I hope that everyone expecting litters are nominating them for the futurity event. I think this is going to be a wonderful addition to our Nationals.

This month I would like to review one of my favorite pet products, the Sleepypod™. As the owner of a pet boutique I like to keep informed of the latest in pet products. A great place to see products in person is the HH Backer show (a pet industry trade show in Chicago). I brought Gertie to the three-day show to help test the products, one of her favorite jobs. During the second day of the show we stopped by the Sleepypod™ booth. Gertie jumped out of my arms and crawled in the fur-lined Sleepypod™. Cozy and content, she fell asleep there while I was talking with the reps. I was a little bit hesitant about the price at $176.00 retail, but have found it to be a really good value. The construction is remarkable as well as the form. It works as a bed, carrier and car seat. There is also an optional warmer kit that you can plug into a wall outlet or your car, perfect for bringing newborn puppies home from the vet. The temperature stays at 102° as long as there is weight in the bed. All three of my puppies fit in the carrier until at least 10 weeks. It has a circular form which rests nice against a car set and the dog is supported on all sides when laying down. They have even recently hired an automobile research institute to test their carriers in crash test. The tests revealed both products could withstand crashes with speeds up to 25 mph, according to Sleepypod™. Currently, there is no legal standard for the crash-worthiness of carriers or car restraint systems for pets. available at autumglopetboutique.com

Important Health Study Information for
Spina Bifida & Cleft Palates The Canine Genetics Laboratory at Clemson University (recently moved from Texas A&M University) is soliciting samples from Boston Terriers (and other brachycephalic breeds) for a current project investigating two developmental disorders: spina bifida and cleft palate. Spina bifida is a condition in which the neural tube fails to close and can lead to incontinence and paralysis; cleft palate results from an incomplete closure of the hard palate, which separates the nasal and oral cavities. Both conditions usually result in puppy death. Clemson University’s study aims to identify candidate genes that may either cause the conditions or be involved in canine developmental pattern processes. Their ultimate goal from this work is to identify the mutation(s) causing closure defects in the brachycephalic dogs. This would allow them to develop a genetic test that would enable early classification of affected dogs as well as detection of carrier dogs. Breeders would then be able to make informed decisions in their breeding programs and avoid these disorders from their breeding lines. To accomplish these goals, the Canine Genetics Laboratory at Clemson University needs your help. They need to collect samples from at least 50 affected (either cleft palate, cleft lip or spina bifida) and 50 normal Boston terriers. The more samples they accumulate, the
better the chances of definitively identifying the gene(s) causing spina bifida and cleft palate. To participate in the study, please provide the following: • DNA sample - samples can be either blood or buccal (cheek) cells, with a preference given to blood. Many veterinarians are willing to draw blood for research purposes at no cost. • DNA Submission Form complete one form for each DNA submitted • Pedigree information for each dog with DNA submission • Pictures of dog if affected and radiographs (x-ray) if possible • Informed Consent Form - can be completed once for owner if submitting multiple samples Owner and patient confidentiality will be maintained. No identification of individuals shall be made when reporting or publishing the data arising from this study. Please contact Dr. Alison Starr (astarr@clemson.edu) 864-656-0191 to discuss this project or address any questions. Thank you for your time and consideration of this study.
Forms are availble on the BTCA website, or you can contact Julie Haddy for a hard copy if you can’t access the website. Julie Haddy PO Box 25116, Greenville, SC 29616 864-325-3562

Draft Annual Meeting Minutes Boston Terrier Club of America, Inc. April 23, 2009/Crowne Plaza Hotel - southbury, ct President McCollough called the meeting to order at 7:45 p.m. There were 76 BTCA members present at the meeting as well as several guests. A quorum was met. Board members presents were: Dane LaJoye, Corresponding Secretary, Joyce Fletcher, Vice President, and Board of Directors Peggy Jackson, Sharon Stoll, Richard Wiest, Carolyn Gastley and Maureen Blackwood. Absent were Richard Nix, Linda Jett, Melany Anaya and Marby Kelly. President McCollough explained that we were going to run this Annual Meeting according to Robert’s Rules of Order which means that before a member of this meeting can make a motion or speak, they must first obtain the floor. One will obtain the floor by standing, wait to be recognized by the chair, and a microphone will be brought to you or you may go to the microphone and wait to be recognized by the chair. Minutes from Annual Meeting 4/23/08 - Fletcher asked if there was any discussion relative to the Annual Meeting Minutes of 4/23/08. There being no questions, she asked for a motion to accept the Minutes from the Annual Meeting held on April 23, 2008 as posted in last year’s Coast to Coast. A motion was made by Virginia O’Connell and seconded
by Pat McCann. Fletcher asked for a show of hands of those in favor. Motion passed. Election of Officers & Board – In the absence of the Recording Secretary, LaJoye read the following to the membership. Pursuant to Article IV, section 4C, because no addition nominations were received by the February 1, 2009 deadline, the Nominating Committee’s slate shall be declared elected at the 2009 Annual Meeting and no balloting shall be required or conducted. Therefore, the new slate officers for the fiscal year July 1, 2009 through June 30, 2010 shall be as follows: President Ola Jeanne McCollourh, Michigan Recording Secretary Lynda Bradley, California Board of Directors Maureen Blackwood, Tennessee Sharon Stoll, Michigan Linda Jett, Georgia AKC Delegate Marby Kelly, Maryland Committee Reports – McCollough asked if there were any questions relative to any of the committee reports. There being no questions at this time, a motion was made by Betty Montgomery that we accept all the committee reports
as written; seconded by Kelly Estes; approved. All the committee reports will be published in the next issue of the C2C. Unfinished Business – By-Laws Revisions - Fletcher reported there was a discussion relative to the revision of the ByLaws at the recently held Board Meeting. The proposed revisions need further tweaking which should be accomplished by the next Board Meeting which will be held in August, 2009. At that time, the proposed revisions will be sent to AKC for approval. After AKC approval, the revisions will be sent to the membership for their approval. New Business AKC Group Realignment – in the absence of Kelly, Fletcher reported that AKC intends to change the realignment of groups and shared details of AKC’s proposal. It was the recommendation of the Board that the membership write letters, make phone calls, send e-mails or whatever to express their discernment with this proposed realignment and, in particular, the impact it would have on the Non-Sporting Group especially when it comes to the

Standard Poodle being included in the Non-Sporting Group. Coast to Coast Newsletter – Fletcher introduced Brook Berth, our new C2C newsletter editor and commended Brook on the outstanding job she is doing. The membership also recognized Brook with their applause. National 2010 – LaJoye, 2010 National Show Chair, announced that the 2010 National will be held in Atlanta, GA on May 18, 19, 20, 21, 2010 (note the National has been extended to four days starting in 2010 due to the addition of Futurity and the Top Boston events. The Atlanta Club will hold their Specialty on Monday, May 17, 2010. The National will be held at the Holiday Inn Select, 4386 ChambleeDunwoody Road, Atlanta, GA – 770-457-6363. The room rate will be $89 per night. The judge for 2010 will be Michael Staley from Kentucky. New AKC Dog Show Class – For those members who were not yet aware, Fletcher announced a new dog show class that is being offered by AKC effective January 1, 2009. The Amateur-Owner-Handler class shall be for dogs that are at least six months of age that are not champions. Dogs must be handled in the class by the registered owner of the dog. This class is restricted to exhibitors who have not, at any point in time, been a professional dog handler, AKC approved conformation judge, or employed as an assistant to a professional
handler. Additionally, members of the immediate family or household of a current professional handler are ineligible for this class. Open Forum – President McCollough asked if there was further discussion at this time. Bev Staley then addressed the meeting and asked the Board if we still had copies of the Illustrated Standard Booklets. The Board will address this. Ann McCammon suggested that the Board have a power point presentation for future Annual Meetings. The Board will address this. Norm Randall then stepped to the podium and made a motion “that the Board move forward with the breed standard as previously written”. This motion was seconded by Betty Montgomery. There was a very lengthy discussion. It was also mentioned that there is currently a moratorium on moving forward with any breed standard changes until August, 2009 as was posted in the C2C minutes in 2007. Therefore, the Board did not feel it was appropriate to address this motion at this time. Kelly, AKC Delegate, then joined the meeting and presented the membership with further information on the AKC proposed realignment of Groups. She emphasized that we should also ask other breed parent clubs to get involved and write to AKC. Following Kelly’s discussion, President McCollough called for a point of order relative to Norm
Randall’s presentation. After further consideration by the Board of Randall’s motion, and since the motion was seconded, we must have a vote. The motion is “the Board should move forward with the breed standard as previously written”. She then asked for a show of hands of those members for this motion (a count was taken of 30). President McCollough then asked for a show of hands for those members against this motion (a count was taken of 41). The motion was defeated by a count of 41 – 30. The Open Forum continued – Joan Oja addressed the members that there should be more information in the show packets and during the show week as to where agility trials are being held and where. Carolyn Gastley agreed and said she would make sure this happens in the future. Agility results should also be posted in the C2C; not just conformation results. Fred Comstock addressed the members suggesting that the Award Committee look into having medallions as conformation awards vs. the plastic little trophies. Jim Alexander addressed the members inviting everyone to make their plans now for the National in 2010 and to plan to attend the host club Specialty being held on the Monday before the National. Pat McCann made a motion to adjourn; Seconded by Alison Allison. Meeting adjourned at 10:10 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Joyce J. Fletcher

Boston Terriers and by Sue Herber
A
gility is a fun race for a dog and handler that involves a series of jumps, tunnels, weave poles, a pause box, teeter-totter, Aframe and dogwalk. Agility requires speed, precision, a good sense of humor and obedience teamwork between handler and dog. Good physical fitness leads to faster, more competitive team times. Agility results in a well conditioned dog and handler while practicing highly motivated obedience skills. The American Kennel Club (AKC) offers agility trials to all physically capable purebred dogs across the country. The classes offered are: Standard Agility, Jumpers With Weaves and FAST. The dog is allowed to participate once a day in each class. The dog’s height determines which jump height division it is to compete in. AKC requires all dogs to have an official, permanent height card for competition.
The Standard Agility Class consists of: jumps, tunnels, weave poles, a pause table, dog walk, teeter-totter and A-frame. The A-frame, Teeter and dog walk are considered contact obstacles. The dog is required to touch with its paws, the yellow painted contact zone before moving on to the next obstacle. The pause table requires that the dog jumps up onto the table and do either a sit-stay or down-stay for five seconds before moving on. The dog must touch the yellow “Contact zone” at the bottom of the contact obstacles. The dog is also required to jump the jumps without knocking the bars down and must enter into the first weave pole from the right side, to do otherwise results in an “NQ”, non-qualifying score. The Jumpers With Weaves Class involves no contact obstacles or pause table. This class consists of: jumps, tunnels and weave poles. Without the contact obstacles, the dogs are able to attain very high rates of speed. In this
Agility
class good sprinting skills on behalf of the handler are crucial. The FAST Class. FAST stands for Fifteen And Send Time. This class is designed to test dog and handler strategy skills, accuracy, speed, and working both in close proximity and at a distance over various obstacles. The class uses point valued obstacles and/or combinations thereof for earning the necessary points required to qualify. There is always a “send bonus” point value for the teams who successfully completes the distance elements of the course. The times and distances are based on the various levels of classes/competition. All three of these classes (Standard, Jumpers and FAST) offer three levels of competition based on the dog’s skills and experience. The classes build in difficulty as they progress. The Novice class uses fewer jumps, less yardage (shorter course distance), fewer weave poles and some allowances for a less than perfect performance. The Open classes require more yardage, more weave poles, more jumps and an increased level of technical value within the overall course design. The Excellent class requires a fault free performance over more obstacles, longer yardage, at a higher speed with a much higher degree of technical challenges embedded within the course itself. Title requirements for AKC Agility titles require the dog to earn three qualifying scores for the Novice, Open and Excellent level classes. The Novice titles are: Novice Standard (NA), Novice Jumpers With Weaves

Yippee! We finally did it! Chopper earned his CDX after many (many) trials during which he taught me how many ways there are to fail Open Obedience. He finally quit making up his own exercises (like the 5 minute out-of-sight STAND stay) and got
the job done. So he is now officially: KATBIRD’S HEAVEN SENT CDX (Ch. Donnybrook’s Artful Dodger X Ch. Katbird’s The Light Still Shines) WATCH OUT! We’re heading for the Agility ring next!

(NAJ) and Novice FAST (NF). Open titles are: Open Standard (OA), Open Jumpers With Weaves (OJ), and Open FAST (OF). The Excellent titles are: Excellent Standard (AX), Excellent Jumpers with Weaves (AXJ) and Excellent FAST (XF). The Master Titles require 10 qualifying scores in the regular classes. Master Standard (MX), Master Jumpers With Weaves (MXJ) and Master Excellent Fast (MXF). The Master Agility Champion (MACH) is obtained by the dog earning 20 double qualifying scores and 750 Championship points. The double qualifying scores come
from the dog that qualifies in both the Excellent Standard and Excellent Jumpers classes on the same day. The points are based on the dog’s speed. One point is assigned for each second under the official course time that the dog makes by completing the course as quickly as possible. If the dog beats the clock by 10 seconds, ten points are earned for the MACH It is possible to earn multiple MACH’s. The FAST Century 1(FTC1) title requires the MXF title plus 100 additional Excellent B FAST class qualifying scores of 60 or greater. Multiple FTC1’s can be earned.
AKC offers Preferred Classes that give the dog and handler more time to complete the course and allows for a lower jump height. The Standard Preferred classes are: Novice Standard Agility Preferred (NAP), Open Standard Agility Preferred (OAP), Agility Excellent Standard Preferred (AXP) and Master Agility Preferred (MXP). The Jumper With Weaves Preferred classes: Novice Jumpers With Weaves Preferred (NJP), Open Jumpers With Weaves Preferred (OJP), Excellent Jumpers with Weaves Preferred (AJP) Master Jumpers With Weaves Preferred (MJP). Multpile MXP’s and MJP’s are earnable. The FAST Preferred classes are: Novice preferred FAST (NFP), Open Preferred FAST(OFP) and Excellent Preferred FAST (XFP). A FAST Century 1 Preferred (FTCP1) is also available. The Preferred Agility Excellent Title (PAX) requires 20 double qualifying scores from the Standard and Jumpers Preferred classes. No point system is required to earn a PAX. It is possible to earn multiple PAX titles. Agility allows the teams to achieve as much as they are capable of without having to earn titles by defeating others. It is not age, gender or breed specific. Agility trials often have their own weekend tent communities of exhibitors who embrace spending a fun filled weekend with their friends and their dogs-rain or shine. Dog agility is contagious. It is quite fun to observe but even more exhilarating to participate in. Jump in and have fun playing agility games, your Boston will never regret the opportunity.

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER
WOW – definition = enthusiastic admiration; a striking success; to express strong feelings as in excitement! We are proud to announce that our 1st and, most assuredly, historical event, BTCA’s Top Boston of the Year, took place in Connecticut at this year’s National. I was honored and privileged to be picked to be one of the judges for this event. Needless to say, we had some beautiful Bostons represented. There was also an array of gala semi-formal attire by everyone present. Even “The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane” graced us with her presence. Wow is the correct wording for me to describe this particular evening. I haven’t had this much fun at a National event in a long time. Ken Roux and his committee should be congratulated for putting together such a classy affair. Kudos to you, Ken, and to your team; everyone did a superb job!
I’m already looking forward to next year with such enthusiasm. This is what it’s all about, folks, gathering together with our Bostons and friends to just have a good time. We know we can’t all be the top winners but you know what? Next year may be your turn! And, besides, this may be one of many ways to entice Boston people to join the BTCA. I’m certainly looking forward to seeing you all in Atlanta in 2010. Respectfully submitted, Joyce J. Fletcher The first Boston Terrier of the Year was truly a gala event. Each
Boston was groomed to its utmost beauty with the exhibitors all decked out in their finest attire. The showroom was dimly lit and adorned with beautiful flower arrangements with the spotlight positioned to shine on it’s first entry. The spectators were enjoying hors d’oeuvres, cocktails, and drinks in anticipation of the new ring procedure and outcome of this first Boston Terrier of the Year Event. The start of the show began with the drawing of the names of the four judges from those who were available in each category by President Ola Jeanne McCollough. The judges consisted of: Multiple Breed Judge - Michael Staley Breeder Judge - Joyce Fletcher Breeder - Linda Alexander Handler - Carol Enright Board member Sharon Stoll began the event with her lovely rendition of “Tonight” which helped to put the crowd in the mood. The four judges were escorted to

entry was truly outstanding with conformation of a high degree, good balance with sound movement, lovely heads with good eyes and expression, nice level toplines, straight fronts, sound rears, and beautiful color and markings. These outstanding qualities in these Boston Terriers made this event a true success.” Sincerely, Michael Staley
OF THE YEAR
After the final exhibit was judged and the scorekeepers were busy tabulating the score cards, each exhibit was called back into the ring by name with a brief bio read as they paraded around the ring two more times in the spotlight to their music. Following the parade of all the Bostons, the Master of Ceremonies

their positions in the ring to the four chairs on the right side of the ring approximately five feet apart. Scorekeepers Mary Miller and Kelly Estes were seated in an alcove behind the judges. Before each exhibitor entered the ring, each judge was given a scorecard with a scale of points by ring steward Elizabeth Wieland. Master of Ceremonies, Dane LaJoye would announce each armband number as each exhibitor entered the ring to the music they had chosen to be played by Music Coordinator, Jason Shuckhart as they moved individually twice around the ring in the spotlight reminiscent of Westminster. This pattern was followed for each of the individual dogs and bitches. This gave the judges their first opportunity to see each of them on profile and to judge their movement. Each exhibit was then examined on the table, which was positioned in the center of the ring, by all of the judges. Then with two judges positioned on each end of the ring, each exhibit was moved down and back twice and stopped in front of the judges for a final view. The judges then retreated to their chairs and marked their score cards based on the point system in the Boston Standard. The score cards were then collected by the ring steward and handed over to the scorekeepers for tabulation. This procedure was then followed for each of the remaining exhibits.
If you are a breeder of Boston Terriers, like myself, and you are attending the 2010 National in Atlanta Georgia, please sign up to be a judge for the Top 20 Show Dog of the Year. CH Keynotes Knock Out Kid. He represents our standard for excellence and any of us would be all too happy if we were his breeder, handler or owner. Congratulation! To all the other Boston beauties, there were no looser, just first runners-up. See you next year in Atlanta. Linda Alexander The evening many of us had anticipated and worked so hard towards had finally arrived. Exhibitors and spectators dressed in their finest flowed though the doors of the Ballroom making their way to the delicious goodies and cash bar. The excitement was difficult to contain as everyone was wowed by the grandeur of the ring and trophy table. The air was alive with whispers .Everyone was speculating on the evening’s outcome. Our master of ceremony Dane LeJoye entered the ring and announced that it was time for the selection of the judges. President Ola Jeann McCollough was invited into center ring to draw names from a crystal container. First selected was Mr Mike Staley, he was going to represent the Multiple Breed Judges category. Based on the crowd’s applause, he was a popular pick. Next up Ms Joyce Fletcher, representing the Breeder Judge’s category. The crowd made their approval known again. Ola Jean’s hand went into the jar to choose for the Breeder category and pulled out Ms. Linda Alexander’s name. Judging from the crowd’s reaction three for three so far had met the crowd’s expectations. One more category to fill and that was for the Handler category and Ms Carol Enright was selected to round out the panel…. Another popular choice and the event was ready to begin.
Catalogs featuring a biography of each dog and musical choice were available after judges had been chosen. Chairman Ken Roux met with the judges to go over ring procedure and judging rules and to answer any questions the judges had. The lights went down and the spotlight came up. As the first musical selection began the first qualifier was brought into the ring. They gaited their way around the ring with the spotlight high-lighting their way. Each dog was given their individual 5 minutes to shine. Once completing the go-around the handler stacked the dog on the table in the center of the ring and the four prestigious judges had opportunity to examine it. The judges made their way, in sets of two, to opposite ends of the ring to watch the dog and handler go up and back twice, giving
each set of judges the chance to evaluate their movement coming and going. The dog then exited the ring, receiving a BTCA bronze engraved Qualifier medallion and Eukanuba towel on their way out. Mr. Staley, Ms Fletcher, Ms Alexander, and Ms Enright each marked ballots based on the 100 point scale of the AKC standard. Ring steward Elizabeth Whelan collected the ballots to be added up by committee members Mary Miller and Kelly Estes. This process was repeated 17 more times as each of the entered Qualifiers glowed in the Spotlight with musical selections perfectly orchestrated by Jason Shuckhart. As scores were being tabulated Master of Ceremony Dane invited the Judging panel back into the center of the ring to be thanked and presented with thank you gifts.

A hush fell over the room as Chairman Ken Roux entered the ring to announce of the first BTCA Top Boston Terrier of the Year. Cheers and Applause rang out with the reading of Number 9. Handler and dog Number 9 came back into the ring and took one more trip around. They were then presented with a shadowbox framed 26 inch magenta and teal rosette and a check for $450, half of the entry fees for the event. One dog walked away with the honor of BTCA Top Boston Terrier of the Year but in my eyes they were All Winners. They had to be a winner to even compete in this wonderful event and deserved their individual moment of recognition. I look forward to seeing next year’s qualifiers. Kelly Estes

The Dangers of Chemical Flea & Tick Products by Dr. Jeannie Thomason
As the warmer weather creeps up on us, many start to worry about those tough, relentless little survivors we call fleas. When your dog is not around, they will even eat each other to survive and wait around as long as it takes for your dog to become it’s new host! These little parasites spend most of their time in their surroundings instead of the actual host (in places like your carpets, covers and any hidden crack). This is why just treating your dog will never work in battle against fleas. You must treat the surrounding environment as well as your pet, all of which can become a hard and long fight. We are all bombarded with advertising to prevent parasites/pests (fleas, ticks, heartworms, intestinal worms) with toxic, lethal chemicals of all types and strengths for all sizes and breeds of dogs or cats. More then likely, you have been using some of these chemicals that your veterinarian has prescribed and sold to you. You may even be one of the increasingly many that have even seen your dog go into an epileptic seizure almost immediately upon being administered one of the lethal chemicals sold to the unsuspecting public to “protect” their cherished little companion. Insect control is a huge problem facing dog owners and over a billion dollars each year is spent in our trying to fight fleas and ticks. Statistics show that in over 50% of American households where conventional pesticide products are used on pets, the misery these insects can cause goes beyond the itching and disease risk these parasites carry. Chemical pesticides carry hidden health risks that can and often do cause devastating effects on our
pets, our children, ourselves and our planet. We often naively assume that government agencies like the EPA and FDA adequately test and assess health risks for the products we find on our store shelves or dispensed by our veterinarians. Sadly, this is not true for conventional insect control products, most all of which contain chemicals known to cause health problems in people and pets both. The risks of chemical flea and tick products include immediate toxic reaction in pets, including; hair loss, vomiting, seizures, paralysis, liver damage, kidney damage, severe skin rashes, brain damage, instability in walking and many more. The toxic chemicals can, over time result in renal failure (kidney failure)and/or liver damage to the point of the liver becoming unable to filter the blood and in many cases, complete liver failure. Contaminated blood circulating throughout the body day after day will most definitely contribute to other more complicated health issues, such as diabetes and arthritis to name just two of the most common long term side effects. The side effects from these toxic chemicals are so bad that in many cases, pets can actually die within days of receiving these lethal doses of chemicals prescribed to kill a little bitty parasite. The chemicals incorporated in these so-called preventives are designed to work on the insects’ nervous systems, and can have the same action in sensitive pets and humans. Pet care workers exposed to high levels of chemical pesticides have been known to have vision impairment, skin and respiratory problems,
among other health concerns. At greatest risk are young children, who are exposed to higher levels of these dangerous chemicals than adults are, and are vulnerable due to their immature nervous systems. The EPA has estimated that children may be exposed to 500 times above established “safe” levels of pesticides on the day a chemical pesticide is used on a dog alone! Have you ever wondered why some dogs have severe flea problems, while others are hardly bothered by the little pests? Fleas can be viewed as an indicator of an animal’s general health. Parasites in general are most attracted to the weak, unhealthy, very old or very young animal whose immune system is not functioning well. The long-term solution to a flea problem is to reduce your dog’s susceptibility to fleas by improving his/her health. In the conventional animal health industry, the fact that parasites (worms, heartworm, fleas, ticks, giardia) will attach themselves to a sick animal before they will attach to a healthy animal, is hardly ever made known to the pet loving public however, I want you to know the facts. People that have dogs with fleas, skin problems, allergies, digestive problems and behavioral problems spend hundreds and some eventually thousands of dollars at the veterinarian on flea prevention, wormers, antibiotics, steroids, tranquilizers, and other medication. The sad but all too truthful fact is that chemicals, antibiotics, steroids, and many other medications take a serious toll on the pet’s internal organs and immune systems. The

animal’s problems become a neverending circle of medication and sickness. Skin problems, allergies and flea infestations are in reality, just the obvious outward signs/symptoms of a nutritional deficiency and toxic overload. All in all, the dangers of chemical flea & tick products stack up in favor of choosing natural approaches to insect control. Natural parasite/insect control products offer far safer alternatives to keeping your dogs, family and home free of insect pests using nature’s best weapons against them. Most natural products use safe amounts of herbal extracts, including essential oils that have natural insect-repellent properties. Natural products work best when used together, and when used to protect your home and family before infestation becomes a problem.
I encourage you to read and share the following articles with others: The Whole Dog Journal’s February 2002 article, “Are Spot-On Flea Killers Safe?” The National Resources Defense Council’s report, “Poison on Pets” (November, 2000) Next time I will share some safe, effective, all natural ways of preventing and/or killing parasites. Reports
Report of the President The overall health of the Boston Terrier Club of America is good, and we are working hard toward continued improvement. Included in this packet are reports from the various committees. Please take the time to read the reports; they will update you regarding the activities that have taken place over the past year, as well as the overall status of the club and its finances. As reported by our Treasurer, the BTCA treasury is in excellent financial shape. That is due in no small measure to meticulous bookkeeping and fiduciary responsibility. Good stewardship of the club’s financial resources has allowed us to move forward with new projects and activities, such as the new web site, and the addition of the Top Boston competition for 2009 and Futurity for 2010. As I see it, the backbone of the BTCA lies with our members and our affiliate clubs. Our members are both knowledgeable and supportive. On behalf of the entire Board, I want to thank you all for your valuable input and your willingness to get involved in club activities. The key to our continued success depends upon a strong relationship between the members and the BTCA leadership. It is incumbent upon the Board to adhere to the BTCA Constitution and By-laws in taking a measured approach to decisions, and it is incumbent upon the members to hold the Board responsible for those decisions. Please take the time to read the minutes of each Board meeting. The minutes are published in our newsletter, Coastto-Coast, as well as being available on the BTCA web site. Our membership is strong, diverse, and geographically
distributed. Although the preponderance of members are more active in conformation events, there is an increasing number of members who participate in both conformation and performance events, or whose interest lies primarily with performance. But wherever your interest lies – conformation, performance, or simply an interest in the preservation of the Boston Terrier, never hesitate to let your voice be heard. If you have an issue you wish to have addressed by the Board, please contact the Corresponding Secretary. I have long been an advocate of supporting our affiliate clubs. Affiliate clubs represent our breed and the BTCA in communities across the United States. In any given year, affiliate clubs sponsor over 30 Specialty shows, and an equal number of Sweepstakes and “B” Matches. They have also been doing a great job educating the public at meet the breed booths and other education events. I urge you all – if you are not already a member of an affiliate club to please join. This year has been tremendously successful – a new web site, a newly formatted newsletter, a Top Boston competition, and plans to hold a first ever Futurity in 2010. We can all be proud of our many achievements. I ask your continued support as we move forward with new endeavors next year. I would like to conclude by thanking the Boston Terrier Club of Milwaukee for their hard work in supporting our 2008 National Specialty, and the Boston Terrier Club of Connecticut for their effort in hosting our 2009 show. Next year – 2010 – our National Specialty will be in Atlanta, GA.
Respectfully Submitted, Ola Jeanne McCollough PReSIdeNT, BTCA Vice President Report This report is being written with the greatest expectation that the BTCA membership now has a renewed confidence in your Board Officers & directors. As I said in last year’s report, your Board is a working Board. We are proactive and moving forward with several projects; one of which (and probably the most important) is keeping our members informed and in a timely manner. To this end, we have hired an outside web designer to help us revamp our web site. This will be a “work in progress” and is in the very capable hands of Melany Anaya, our new web editor, with the assistance of her committee of Linda Jett, Lynda Bradley and Joyce Fletcher. Your Board has approved and is moving forward with two new events; the Top Boston event, which will begin with the 2009 BTCA Specialty, and the Futurity event, which will be held in Atlanta in 2010. I personally am looking forward to these events with great anticipation. Maureen Blackwood, who is new to the Board, will be asked to replace me as the liaison to the Health Committee, Welcome Maureen. The new Coast to Coast editor is Brook Berth, and I will continue as the advisory editor. As you have already seen, our first issue of the Coast to Coast under our new editor was very professionally done. The feedback we have received has been nothing less than “awesome.” In addition to serving as your Vice President, I have been asked to replace Karen Milham on the

Judges education Committee (Karen is unable to continue in this capacity). Based on my judging experience, I feel confident that I will be able to offer a lot to this committee. Last but not least, as chair of the By-Laws Revision Committee (along with committee members Maureen Blackwood and Glenna Sprague); I’m excited to report the By-Laws proposed revisions are now complete. The next step (after Board approval) is to send the proposed revisions to AKC for their input and approval. After AKC’s approval, the proposed revisions to the By-Laws will be sent to you, our members, for your approval. We continue to welcome your feedback. Remember, this is your Board and we are here to serve the BTCA membership toward the betterment of our beloved Boston Terriers. Respectfully submitted, Joyce Fletcher Corresponding Secretary Report In my “former” life, I was a career U.S. Navy officer. For many years, the Navy had a recruiting slogan – “It’s Not Just A Job, It’s An Adventure.” Well – the same can be said for the position of Corresponding Secretary. Sometimes, I find myself longing to be at sea again. There were many quiet nights on the bridge of the ship, navigating the world’s oceans, enjoying the solitude of the moment under a Caribbean or Mediterranean sky. And then there were those times went we went to General Quarters firing off missiles, or anticipating the worst – a heightened state of emergency. Come to think of it, maybe I AM the right person to be Corresponding Secretary!!! All
kidding aside, I have found this job to be very educational, and I enjoy the challenges. In my “current” life – outside of the BTCA, I am the director of Global Communications for the world’s largest service organization, and Managing editor of a magazine published in 17 languages, with a circulation of 1.3 million in 205 countries. I rely on accurate, open communication to achieve results. Communication is key to the success of any organization – including the BTCA. As your Corresponding Secretary, I communicate on a daily basis with members, the Board, AKC, and an array of others. With Board approval, I draft and send official correspondence on behalf of BTCA. I also put together agenda items for Board meetings, and accept membership applications. My total budget is $1500, which is used exclusively for postage and reproduction costs. To date, I have used only a fraction of my budget, and try to communicate when and where possible via e-mail. I am a strong advocate of paperless communication. I would rather see BTCA funds spent on more important things, like the betterment of our breed. It killed me to put this packet of information together!! Please notice the pages are printed back-to-back to reduce production costs. We are fortunate in that people currently serving as chairs and as committee members are doing a fantastic job. I am pleased to report that all committee chairs have indicated their willingness to stay on for another year. We have a fantastic new web site, which will soon become the most important means of providing information to our members. Visit
the web site, and get to know it. You’ll find it very easy to navigate. We also have a wonderful newsletter – free to all members of the BTCA. I encourage everyone to support this publication by placing ads. It’s a great way to showcase your breeding program, and the ad revenue helps offset the production costs. Whether communicating with members or the Board, running interference between BTCA, AKC and ABC Nightline, or just taking care of the sometimes mundane tasks that come with being Corresponding Secretary, I’m pleased to serve. Life is, and should be, a continuing quest for information. every day is an opportunity to learn something new and impart knowledge to others. As an organization, the BTCA is doing a great job in our pursuit of bettering our breed and educating the public. You are all part of the reason we have been successful. Never hesitate to contact me with questions or suggestions. If I don’t have the answer, I will do my best to find it. But please keep in mind, my degrees are in english and Linguistics – not psychology. And I have no expertise in conflict resolution. restrictions on term limitations, this was the first election in which no incumbents were elected during the past year the AKC sanctioned 1,534 all- breed shows and 2,258 specialty shows, which resulted in 19,986 new conformation champions, 220 dual champions, and 3 triple champions. The companion events, including obedience, rally, and agility showed an increase in participation and titles won. Registration of dogs were down by 10% during the past year, while litter registrations declined by 12%. This has become a serious problem due to the competition from other competing registries. It is vital that we encourage all members and the buyers of their puppies to register with the AKC. Online registration has made this process very convenient. Financially, like most organizations and individuals, the AKC’s portfolio has taken a turn for the worse. The total expenses increased 4%, but the net assets declined because of the fall in the stock market. These losses were primarily in the investments for retirement for employees. As most members know by now, the Board has approved the expansion of conformation groups from 7 to 10. This has caused a lot of controversy. The Boston Terrier has been placed in the Companion Group, but the final placements have not been finalized. I expressed our concern at the Annual Meeting. I, personally, feel that the Companion Group is a good placement for the Boston, but I object to the Poodle remaining in this group. I urge each member to write to the Board to express their concern that the Poodle was bred for sporting and working. Please share with me anything that you may want me to present to AKC on this matter.
Another matter of concern occurred recently regarding the airing of a segment on Boston Terriers on Nightline. The BBC had an hour show on the negative breeding of purebred dogs. It caused havoc in Great Britain. I was contacted by dennis Sprung and Lisa Peterson at AKC to “secretly” work with them to squelch such a program, which we were able to do. We were the only breed earmarked, since the Boston was the first American-bred dog. On BBC, they displayed all the abnormalities with “flat nose” breeds and line breeding. If any of you are contacted for an interview about the breed for TV, decline IMMedIATeLY and contact me. Also, if you would like to see the BBC program, email Marby@erols.com and I will forward it to you. A matter that has been discussed is the issue of allowing non-purebred dogs to participate in AKC events. I realize that this measure would increase funds for the AKC, but I feel that it compromises the Constitution and mission of the organization. Please let me know your opinion, so I can best represent the Boston Terrier Club of America. On a happy note, I want to congratulate Bob and ellie Candland for winning the Non-Sporting Group Breeder of the Year Award! It is quite an honor, and they have made our breed proud! If you see any legislation coming up in your area concerning dog legislation, please contact me right away, so that I can get AKC to jump on the matter and help to nip it in the bud. These law proposals are popping up all over the country, and we need to know right away in order to protect the entire fancy. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me so that
I may best represent you and the Boston Terrier Club of America. Respectfully submitted, Marby Kelly AKC deLeGATe Recording Secretary Report As the BTCA Recording Secretary I am responsible for taking and transcribing all Board meeting minutes and mailing them to all Board members, the newsletter and web site editor. I am also responsible for keeping the master directory updated, distributing sets of membership mailing labels, mailing out the annual slate of officer nominations, mailing out the annual elections ballot and any other misc ballots. This is a “working” position for BTCA and I am honored to serve the members. I encourage members to continue to advise me of changes of home addresses. the first Boston Terrier to hold a particular title as well as the first Boston Terrier to have earned both a CH and MACH title. Conformation and agility awards for 2008 and obedience awards for 2007 are being prepared for presentation at the annual banquet in Southbury, Connecticut. For the first time we will be recognizing the top competitors in Rally. Although there was confusion this award year as to the deadline and cost for some of the awards, we have decided that starting next year the deadline will be February 15 of each year and awards will cover only titles earned for 2 years through the end of the last calendar year. Because of the confusion this year we will permit any titles earned in 2007 to be recognized. Below is a description of the various awards offered by the BTCA. Note that when reference is made to being a member of the BTCA, membership in good standing in an affiliate regional club is also included. If an applicant is only a member of a regional affiliate club, a letter from the secretary of that club attesting to that person’s good standing must accompany the application for the award. ReGISTeR OF MeRIT This is a designation for those dogs that have produced a certain number of champion get. Specifically, a dog must produce 5 champions and a bitch must produce 3 champions in order to be designated in the Club’s Register of Merit. An owner of such a dog/bitch must be a member in good standing of the BTCA at the time of application and must apply for the Register of Merit designation on a form that is found either in the Coast to Coast or on the Club’s website (www.bostonterrierclubofamerica. org). This is an honorary designation
of our Club and once awarded entitles the owner to place “ROM” at the end of the dog’s or bitch’s name. It is inappropriate for nonmembers or for members who did not apply to use this designation for their dog/bitch. Our Register of Merit program also allows for the addition of one or more stars when a dog/bitch produces additional champion get, 5 for dogs or 3 for bitches, beyond the get required for a ROM. There is no limit to the number of stars a dog or bitch may acquire. However, again, the same rules apply; you must be a member in good standing and you must make the appropriate application for the additional star(s). Stars are given in units of 5 for dogs and 3 for bitches. There is no provision for partial stars or numbers of champion get in the ROM designation. Register of Merit designations are given once a year at the Annual Awards Banquet and a certificate is awarded to the owner of such dogs or bitches. Other than applying, there is no cost to the owner to receive this award. Completed applications should be sent to: Janet Harner, Awards Chair 1705 La Costa Court Pittsburgh, PA 15237 412-366-6857 412-366-7440 (FAX) janharner@verizon.net CHAMPION ANd PeRFORMANCe AWARdS This awards program allows members to apply to receive a small trophy or plaque which contains the dog’s name and title accomplished, whether it be in conformation, obedience, including rally, or agility. The Club also permits awards for titles in other areas that are recognized by the AKC.
In order to get one of these awards a member must apply and send a nominal fee (currently $10) for the award. For this purpose, the Club does not keep track of titles earned by members’ dogs, so it is imperative that you apply to get this award. Again the applications can be found in Coast to Coast or on the Club’s website and must be postmarked by February 15. Applications should be sent to either: Conformation: Gwenn Weyandt 128 McKinney Lane derry, PA 15627 724-539-1421 Gwey6969@aol.com Performance & others: Sue Herber 9960 dakota Circle Bloomington, MN 55438 952-885-0134 Sherber@comcast.net Health Committee Awards The Club also has determined that members’ dogs who complete certain specified health testing are entitled to receive certificates on an annual basis. In order to qualify for a Silver Certificate, a dog must have a health exam form completed by a veterinarian, a CeRF certificate and an OFA patella certificate. In order to qualify for a Gold Certificate, a dog must obtain a BAeR certificate in addition to the qualifications for the Silver Certificate. There are also veterans’ certificates for dogs 7 years or older. Further information on the requirements for these awards may be found on the BTCA web site or from the chair listed below. Members must apply on an annual basis to receive these certificates, and there is a $5 fee. The certificates are presented at the Annual Awards Banquet and the necessary testing must be completed in the previous calendar year.

A silver award will be given to a dog who is a champion and has one additional obedience or performance title. A gold award will be given to a champion dog who has both obedience and performance titles. The award is available only to members and it must be applied for. Applications should list the name of the dog, the name, address, telephone number and e-mail address of the owner, and must include copies of all AKC titles. For conformation, it is the top 10 dogs based on breed points. For agility, it is the top 10 in MACH agility competition. The statistics for
these awards are obtained from the AKC. For obedience, the statistics are obtained from Front and Finish and dogs finishing in the top 10 of either obedience system (delaney or First & Foremost) are recognized. For rally, the statistics are kept by Performance Chair Sue Herber. An owner of a Top 10 dog does not have to be a member in order to receive these certificates. There is no application and therefore no fee. Respectfully submitted, Janet Harner AWARdS CHAIR Continuing education Report There being little to no activity within this committee this past year, leaves me with nothing to report. I made a concerted effort to get Myra Savant Harris for her very wellreceived presentations, but she was totally booked for our time frame. Since BTCA has included the new Top Twenty Boston of the Year event, I felt there would be no time to add yet another meeting to attend, and decided to scrap any further endeavors to obtain something which could have been mediocre, at best, and not too well received, given the jam-packed time frame we have to work with. efforts are in place to accede to a majority who have indicated to me that they’d like to see another breeder panel discussion next year on dog and puppy evaluation, so we’ll try to make that happen. The one that was held a few years ago was so well received and attended, that I think the time may be right once again. Any suggestions or concerns from the membership will be appreciated if addressed to me. I do ask that the Show Chair(s) work with me in not allowing the
host clubs to go off on their own to formulate programs, without prior discussion, such as is being presented this year. I was never consulted on those intentions, (in fact, it was a total surprise to me to learn of it) and that took one more possible evening for our Continuing education event out of the mix; it’s better if we all work together to make these programs enjoyable without causing undue time constraints. It was upon learning of this upcoming effort that I stopped trying to formulate another offering, as the time just isn’t there to make it seem worthwhile. However, if it’s felt that these programs are more beneficial than our Committee has presented in the past, I need to know that as well. Thanks everyone for your ongoing cooperation, and I will gladly continue in this position if desired. It taxes my brain, and keeps me young! Respectfully Submitted Ann McCammon CONTINUING edUCATION CHAIRMAN Judges education Committee The Judges education Committee held a very successful Seminar in May 2008, at the spacious Wyndham Milwaukee Airport & Convention Center, Wisconsin. It was well attended and the participants seemed to have a firm grasp of what the ideal Boston Terrier should look like. They all asked very intelligent questions and the presenters were able to elicit from the participants, the salient features of the breed. We want to publicly thank Mrs. Karen Milham and Mrs. Leana Terrill for their outstanding contribution to the committee. These ladies brought a wealth of information and

experience to the sport and were quite instrumental in formulating the policies of the Committee. We take this opportunity to welcome Mrs. Beverly Staley and Mrs. Joyce Fletcher to the Committee. We are confident that they will bring their expertise to bear in the education of future judges. As we continue to receive requests for breed presentations, from several judges organizations throughout the country, we are truly pleased that judges are taking a very intense approach to the correct interpretation of the Boston Terrier Standard. If we are to continue making strong placements in Non Sporting Group competition, then we must rely on informed judges. Chairman Carl e. Gomes Vice Chairmen Michael Staley Lisa LaMere Joyce Fletcher membership Chair Beginning July 2008, I accepted the position as the BTCA Membership chair. Not knowing what was involved, I offer any help that was needed to make our club a success. What a wonderful opportunity to welcome new members! We are all here for the same reason, our love for our beloved Boston terriers. I was asked by the board to compile a membership packet and send this packet to all of our new members. Not having any previous tools to work with, I started from scratch. I began compiling the packet to distribute with a new member list that I received from the BTCA Corresponding Secretary, dane
LaJoye. I received the extra copies of the Coast to Coast from the editor at that time, Pamela Preston, and also a membership roster that was provided to me from Richard Nix. I also enclosed the BTCA Code of ethics, BTCA Constitution, a single page quick reference pictorial Boston terrier standard, and a fully detailed pictorial and illustrated standard booklet of our beloved breed, the Boston terrier. I also enclosed a small welcome letter. Since my term began in July, we have welcomed 42 new members. I am still anticipating the arrival of the prior chairs files, which will be delivered to me at the National in CT. I will then be able to see who in our membership have not yet received their packets and will be able to compile a packet for those members who are in need of one. In closing, I am open to any suggestions in which I can make this welcome packet better for our new members and encourage them to participate and enjoy our club, the Boston Terrier Club of America. Respectfully submitted, Alison Allison BTCA MeMBeRSHIP CHAIR 2008 BtCA Performance Report Boston Terriers continue to excel the AKC Companion events. (AKC refers to Agility, Obedience, Rally and Tracking as Companion events. Performance events are breed specific, related to that breed’s instinctual, developed purpose such as hunting breeds or terrier earthdogs that go underground for vermin.) In 2008 AKC awarded 326 titles to Boston Terriers for agility, obedience, rally and tracking. every one of these titles was congratulated on behalf of the BTCA
via a Congratulatory letter that I mailed out. every envelope contained the letter and either a BTCA Award application or BTCA Membership application depending on current membership status. This year an incredible Boston earned a VCd3! This is a first for Boston Terriers. To obtain this tough title the dog must have titled at the third level of obedience, agility and tracking. This fabulous title goes to: CH Chelestinia’s Star Romancer VCd3 RAe. Owned by Janet Rey. Using the AKC Awards Cd each month, I was able to determine obedience and rally rankings. This enables the BTCA to get this information quickly without purchasing it from another, historically unreliable business. While tracking this information I found some other interesting Boston Terrier information. The average score for a Boston in obedience (during 2008) was 184 out of 200 points possible. The average score for rally was 90 out of the 100 points possible. due to the enormous amount of time this took to track and calculate, and the very large number of agility trials, I was not able to calculate agility rankings. Top dog Reports were purchased from AKC to obtain this information. Of the 326 titles awarded by AKC, 64 BTCA Performance Award applications were received. The BTCA has a lot of room for growth in the Companion event area and I hope that everyone will continue to support this growing community. that their owners can no longer provide for. Foster homes are in high demand, but sadly they are also in short supply. I am averaging 3 phone calls per day from owners across the country needing to surrender their Bostons. I am now also averaging 5 e-mails per day from across the country from owners needing to surrender their dogs. A new trend for rescue is a staggering amount of incoming dogs that are coming from homes due to an inability to find time for the dog. It appears that households that before had the luxury of having at least one person at home to care for a dog, are now forced to become “dual income” households. I have also noticed a higher than average amount of owner surrenders due to an inability to house-train the dog. More often than not, this is either due to stress from the dog now being alone which it is not accustomed to, or younger dogs who the new home under-estimated the time needed to adequately train the dog. Respectfully Submitted, Kim Pennington Junior Showmanship It is great to see that this year we finally have had more than two applicants for the Jr. handler of the year award! It’s great to see our youth get involved in showing and also learning about our breed. I know I say this every year, but please remember that our youth are the future of our breed and we need to help them and support them as much as possible. Again, it was great to see that we had four applicants and they all were very competitive and close when I had to determine the best Jr. ofthe year. I’d
like to tell the juniors to please keep up the good work and I wish them the best of luck this next show year and at the nationals. Respectfully Submitted, Megan everswick AKC Gazette Breed Columnist It has been a great year, starting off with a bang at The Boston Club of America National Specialty, 2008. A lot of hard work went into OFA Health Committee dVd, which was for sale at the show. I filmed the video and did the cover photo. Thank you Maureen Blackwood for finding Covert Productions. They did the proof edit, burned the tapes and did the cover. It’s a tape everyone should see and the money goes for a good cause. I really enjoy writing the breed columns, which many Boston fanciers, the AKC editors and AKC judges like, because the articles are teaching people about our breed. My March article was called; Puppy ears Going Flip Flop. Thanks Joyce Fletcher for the nice e-mail comments. A young girl emailed me about how much the article helped prevent her from messing up her first Boston puppies ears. It makes me feel good to know people really want to learn about our breed. This was the third year I have had a photo media press pass at Westminster dog Show. My articles and photos were published in, The Coast To Coast Jan-March and Boston Quarterly “Boston Fanciers Having Fun In New York. Spring 2008 in Boston Quarterly, “BT fanciers in Long Beach”. Published two articles for Camion Books, “Mystery of dolly and “Beware of The Label”. I received a nomination in Special Awards, sponsored by
eukanuba Canine Health, thru The dog Writers Association of America 2008 annual writing competition, which I am a professional member. Articles to come: AKC Gazette is having a special 125th- anniversary issue, in celebration of the purebred dog. All breed columnists are invited to submit a short piece (limit 200 words). Only 1 to 5 pictures can be used and they have to be very good ones. I am asking for your help to find some of the old dogs that made a difference in the history or our breed. Some pictures I would consider are: CH. Star Q’s Brass Buttons, CH Mighty Sweet Regardless, CH Million dollar Kid Boots. In 1932 the 1st Boston to win in the NonSporting Group was not a champion, Million dollar King. I need your help to make people see how wonderful our American Gentleman is. Along with our new web site, the newsletter is an excellent means for communicating with the BTCA membership. One of my goals was to continue to improve upon the format of the newsletter, to make it not only informative, but appealing - in order to make it more attractive to those wishing to place paid ads. Our ad rates are competitive, and the revenue brought in from advertising helps to offset the production cost. As you can see, the advertising revenue is increasing. I hope this will be a continuing trend as we move forward with the new format.

I really appreciate members emailing me to let me know that they have puppies available. I would encourage everyone to do that, since that keeps my files up-to-date. There are still many members that don’t contact me. It is always gratifying when someone contacts me looking for a breeder referral, and then emails me a couple weeks later to say thank-you - they found a reliable breeder through breeder referral. I have had many people comment that they found the BTCA web site useful as well. If you are no longer actively breeding, please take a few minutes to contact me. That way, I won’t waste your time, my time, or the inquiries time. My listing is only as accurate as you make it, so please help me keep it up-to-date. I hope you all find the breeder referral worthwhile. I find it very rewarding, and look forward to serving in this capacity again next year. Respectfully Submitted, Billie Bunch treasurer’s Report The following 3 pages contain information provided by Richard Nix, BTCA Treasurer.
Breeder Referral Report The amount of phone calls and e-mails has declined somewhat this year. This could be a combination of a recessed economy (fewer people spending disposable income on pets), and the fact that many breeders now have web sites. I did see the usual increase around Christmas, and that increase continued into January.

To this end, he indicated that a website has been set up (specifically, BTCA-affiliateclubs@ googlegroups.com). Elder also discussed the status of two clubs: Nebraska - “B” match has received AKC approval (reminder that two “A” matches one year apart will be required for independent status). Valley of the Sun - unfortunately AKC removed permission to hold shows; plans in progress to return to full status (outcome not known at this time). The following affiliates in attendance provided a brief update on their activities: Connecticut - hosting the 2009 National with their own back-to-back specialties; by all accounts the show has proceeded smoothly. Cincinnati - continue to host back-to-back specialties in conjunction with the Buckeye all-breed shows in late May but have found entries to be down across the board. Membership is stable (not large); will conduct a fall puppy matCH Louisville - conducted their show this past March (as previously) in conjunction with the large all-breed show; entries were good. Maryland - good show was held April 10th; included health clinics. Membership is 100+, but naturally a few work all the aspects of the meetings/show. Next year marks the 70th anniversary of the club; plans are underway for a 2-day show.
Heartland - increased membership by encouraging more participation in fun day activities, last year’s Thanksgiving party, working in agility/obedience and the rescue efforts of a “Pampered Pet Parade.” Milwaukee - of course hosted the 2008 BTCA National; now working on their August 7th show. Portland - some 50 members strong; working more “meet the breed” specials in June & December as well as hosting a “tea party” (fun & games) in August. They are active in rescue by supporting an outside 501c(3) organization. San Diego - unfortunately BTCA dues lapsed; now reinstated. Western Pennsylvania - 40-50 members; club’s budget indicates that their rescue and ways/means have more monies than club proper. Have been organizing teaching meetings to involve more of the public, namely, talks about a new strain of parvo (Dr. Alexander shared some of his knowledge regarding new vaccine protocols). Western Washington - about 120 members working diligently to bring about an upcoming 30th anniversary show. Planning two rescue events, flyball exhibitions, dog massages, two puppy matches. Outreach includes agility and a courtesy committee; they work with their fellow Portland club to achieve maximum visibility in the community. Suncoast - gearing up for their first ever “back-to-back” specialty shows (followed by 2-day all-breed with Hernando County KC). Carl Gomes will judge on Nov. 5th; Pamela Douglas from New Zealand on Nov. 6th. Additionally, education programs are in process. Golden Gate - somewhat floundering in terms of both membership and finances. Michelle Billings will be
judging at their June specialty (part of a 4-day cluster). Atlanta - working hard to have a successful August 20th show as well as selected to host BTCA National May 17-20. Metro. Washington - small club that hosts their annual specialty May 16th. Working to meet the AKC’s new criteria for outreaCH Minnesota - this club devotes money, time and efforts to their rescue program. Will be hosting their annual specialty on June 6th. Rocky Mountain - reinstated; while membership is down, the club is looking to host their specialty separate from a 2-day all-breed show. Sierra Gold - with approx. 30 members they are currently in transition. They will be part of a combined specialty in October and have great hopes to host the 2011 BTCA National. Western - some 77 members; will be hosting their specialty June 20th at Valparaiso, Indiana’s cluster show. Elder closed the meeting by giving a brief overview of what may be facing not only the BTCA membership/affiliate clubs but dogdom in the U.S. regarding legislative agendas in a number of states that will plague dog ownership and future breeding. We must acquaint ourselves with our State House efforts in this regard (huge counter-effort is being fashioned by the HSUS nationwide) and become active in this regard. Passivity will not work to our advantage. Respecfully submitted, Pat Schmitt, Recorder
