President’s

Message

Dear BTCA members, I certainly hope everyone had a great summer. This is just a quick reminder about the 2010 National Specialty. As you know, the 2010 National will be held at the Holiday Inn Select in Atlanta , GA. For reservations, call 877-786-9480. The room rate is $79 per night. Please be sure to tell them you are with the Boston Terrier Club of America. I would like to encourage everyone to stay at the host hotel instead of local hotels for obvious reasons. For instance, cost savings to the club; the BTCA receives comp rooms after a number of rooms have been booked and these rooms are used for judges, photographers or seminar presenters. In addition, by staying at the host hotel, you are where the action is. It’s also an opportunity to meet with friends that we may only see once per year. I look forward to seeing everyone in 2010. Hug your Boston,

From the

Editor

This summer passed too quickly. My husband Joel and I managed to squeeze in a short “vacation” to Upper Michigan though. It correlated with a dog show, of course. Joel thought it would be fun to go camping in a tent. We brought with Gunther and the two puppies, Geraldine and Olive. I should have seen the presage when the campground’s flash-web site was thundering and lightning. Storming was precisely what the weather was like until we were ready to leave. Joel didn’t get to grill out, the dogs weren’t impressed, but we had fun anyways. I think I have convinced Joel to stay at the Econolodge across from Lake Superior next year, and he can grill-out if the weather’s nice. Please be sure to only send submissions for the Coast to Coast to c2c@ gunthergraphics.com.

Anaya reported that the site is due to be revealed approx. February 1 but that it continues to be a work in progress and will take several more months to complete. New pages will include ones dedicated to: Futurity, BT of the Year, Conformation, Obedience, National Specialty, and several other new pages. A “members only” section will be added as soon as the entire site is complete. Anaya needs members who are versed in OB & Performance to assist her with the new web pages dedicated to each topic. Julie Haddy and Sue Herber’s names were mentioned and Anaya will contact each to see if they are interested in constructing the

new pages. An updated President’s message is needed for the new site, McCollough to submit asap. Anaya asked the board’s permission to use the Purina Parent Club Partnership logo on the site and the board agreed. Lastly, there was question about the Rescue page and the list of 30+ rescue organizations that are listed on the page. Not all of these groups are known to the BTCA and Anaya expressed concern about liability to the BTCA. Jackson to work with Rescue Chair Kim Pennington to make a list of Affiliate Clubs that participate in Rescue and only list those names and contacts on the BTCA Rescue page. No other outside rescue groups will be listed and in the meantime only Pennington’s name and contact info will appear. AKC Breed Realignment – Kelly contacted AKC about the BTCA Board’s concerns about poodles not being a “companion” breed and AKC will discuss at their next meeting on March 10, 2009. Kelly will be in attendance at that meeting. <Jett left the meeting at 8:52 p.m.>. BTCA board recommends that AKC table any decisions until further investigation can be done. BTCA members are encouraged to keep the pressure on AKC and to discuss at shows with others who will do the same. Kelly to bring report of the 3/10/09 meeting to the next BTCA Board meeting and encouraged members to email her any ideas they might have.

2010 National Specialty – A site has been secured in Atlanta, LaJoye to call hotel to discuss. It was noted that the ballroom is smaller than recommended but that the Bulldog and Afghan clubs have held their national specialties there and the size of the ballroom was not a concern. Motion by LaJoye to award the national to the Atlanta Club, seconded by Jackson. Motion approved. Executive session occurred between 9:10-9:15 p.m. Brief discussion regarding possible judges followed by Anaya recommending we table until the next meeting so that everyone have time to gather ideas for possible judges. New Business Agenda for Annual Board meeting – Discussion on who would be in attendance and what date/time would be best. The meeting will be held on the Sunday before the show and will begin at 10:00 a.m. Jackson and Gastley will not be in attendance but will conference call in at their own expense. Jackson to ask Fred Comstock if they may borrow his speakerphone. LaJoye or Marcia Terry to reserve conference room. Anaya and Wiest will not be in attendance. Committees – LaJoye to send letters to current committee chairs to remind them to submit their committee reports by February 15, 2009 and to see if they are interested in retaining their position for the next fiscal year. The board will make the final decision on those positions at the annual board meeting. In regards to committee report booklets to be distributed at the Annual Meeting, it was agreed that 100 booklets should suffice. LaJoye responsible for taking roll at Annual Meeting. Frequency of Board Meetings – Because of the high costs of

conference calls, Fletcher suggested scheduling meetings four times per year with the option to add additional meetings if needed. Further discussion and a decision were tabled until the next board meeting. It was also suggested that we publish the dates ahead of time so that the membership can give their input before the meetings take place. Brief discussion regarding expediting approved meeting minutes to the membership and one idea was to only print the Coast to Coast after a meeting where a new set of meeting minutes would be approved and be available for immediate release to the membership. Committee Reports – February 15th is the deadline for all committee reports to be received by LaJoye. Kelly to have until after the AKC March 10 meeting to send in her report. Rescue – covered in the Website Report above. Update of Proposed Officers – Covered in Recording Secretary report above. Proposed Video – One member had suggested making a video of famous bostons and that the proceeds would go to BTCA or the BTCA Health Committee. The board decided that because the BTCA already has 2 new events this year (Futurity and BT of the Year) that the board take the suggestion under advisement and possibly consider the idea at a future date. New member applications – 6 applications were received. Discussion regarding extra costs of mailing the Coast to Coast to foreign members and the possibility of only offering it via email to those members. Proposal to increase dues for foreign members tabled until next meeting. C2C – Fletcher reports that there is a new postal law regarding change

of address regulations. The BTCA can save $75 for each issue of the C2C if they add “addressee or current occupant” to each newsletter. Brief discussion that it might now work for BTCA to do this. Topic tabled until next board meeting. Fletcher motion to increase cost of an ad in the C2C from $40 to $50 and that no personal ads will be placed on the front, back or inside covers. Brief discussion. Fletcher withdrew her motion and the discussion is tabled until the next board meeting. Nix noted that the newsletter must be mailed via 1st class mail and to be sure that the editor knows. BT OF THE YEAR UPDATE: - Invitations have been mailed 1/17/2009 ( some double checking is now being done to assure accuracy) -per Janet Harner, Eukanuba has donated a year supply of food to the winner and will have goodie bags for all participants -Brook has the evening pamphlet set up and is ready for the individuals that are entered to send pictures and bio of their dog. -ribbons are ordered and will be shipped in 2-3 weeks -futurity is moving right along and on schedule -who ever is setting up the premium list please make sure that the rules to this event are included in the premium per AKC guidelines. Win… Lose…

Be Gracious by Joyce J. Fletcher In 1984, my son and I were co-editors of a newsletter called Boston Paw Prints. This newsletter was published by The Boston Terrier Club of Greater Cincinnati, Inc. In May of that year, I wrote an editorial which is apropos to today’s show environment as well and I would like to share this with the membership. The show ring is a place of anxiety, sweat, nerves on edge, patience, victory and above all “pride”… pride in the fact that “we have the Best Boston in the ring”. Then comes the moment we have all waited for; the judge points their finger…1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and that all precious moment… “The Thrill of Victory” or “The Agony of Defeat”… What then do we do? How do we react? Our emotions take over, don’t they? Victory is winning…we all know how to win! We smile a lot, kiss and hug our Boston, say thanks to the well-wishers. Then we walk away from the ring with the butterflies gone and rush to the nearest Wendy’s to buy that hamburger that we secretly promised our Boston if he/she won.

Defeat… the agony of losing! Losing seems to power our emotions more than winning. We don’t know how to lose very well. We make excuses… the judge was bad (he/she picks handlers); my Boston had a bad day; a local always wins and I could go on and on. We leave the show grounds as fast as we can and sometimes we’re just down right angry. I believe that as true Boston fanciers and with our competitive surge, we must come to the realization that we will win, but we will also lose. As in any sport, the sport of showing dogs is no different. We are doing this because we love our Bostons and we want to show the world. There will be winners but there will also be losers. And because of our competitiveness and our pride in our dogs, you will see some of the finest Boston Terriers ever in the show ring. And isn’t that what it’s all about… to breed the finest? No one can take away our feelings, or our emotions because they are real. However, as in the grace of the Boston Terrier, let’s all try to win and lose with that same grace… we can win… but we will also lose.

Fletcher also reported that she will continue as the Advisory Editor of the C2C. In addition, Fletcher reported a motion by Richard Nix that the cost of ads should be as follows beginning with the fall issue of the C2C - $50 per ad for individual ads and $40 per ad if you purchase 4 ads at once. Fletcher seconded this motion, approved unanimously. This information will be published in the next issue of the C2C. McCollough thanked Brook and Cindy and they left the meeting.

Board Reports President – no report Vice President – no report Recording Secretary – In the absence of Anaya, Fletcher read the Minutes of January 20, 2009 and the Minutes of February 10, 2009 and asked for any corrections. There was one correction to the February 10, 2009 Minutes as follows. “Maureen Blackwood was not absent from this meeting.” A motion was made by LaJoye to accept the Board Minutes of January 20, 2009 as read; seconded by Jackson; approved. A motion was made by Blackwood to accept the Board Minutes of February 10, 2009 as amended. This motion was seconded by Stoll; approved unanimously. Corresponding Secretary – LaJoye reported that Marcia Terry had done a great job with this year’s National. McCollough also commended Dane for the excellent job he had done. LaJoye reported that the Meet the Breed booth would be on display at this year’s National. In addition, Blackwood made a motion that affiliate clubs who borrow the Meet the Breed Box should be responsible for round trip shipping and insurance; seconded by LaJoye; motion approved unanimously. Treasurer – LaJoye reported (in the absence of Nix) that as of April 7, 2009, there was a total of $68, 013.92 in the treasury. McCollough

said that Richard should be commended for his diligence with the club’s treasury. Unfinished Business: Budgets – The Board discussed the following changes in budget amount for specific committees and changes in the liaison to the Board for certain committees. The committee name for the BT of the Year should be BTCA Boston Terrier of the Year – budget amount = self supporting. Futurity budget amount = self supporting. The Awards Committee Board liaison will be Sharon Stoll. The Gazette Columnist Board Liaison will be Dane LaJoye. The Health Committee Board liaison will be Maureen Blackwood replacing Joyce Fletcher. Maureen will check with the Health Committee to make sure that the $4,000 budgeted amount is correct. The Perpetual Trophies Committee liaison would be Marby Kelly replacing Joyce Fletcher. The chair for the 2010 National will be Dane LaJoye. The budget for the National is “working capital”. All other committee chairs and liaisons and budgets will be the same as previously reported for the fiscal year 7/1/09 – 6/30/10. By-Laws Revisions – Due to further clarification, the discussion on revisions to the by-laws has been tabled to the August, 2009 Board meeting.

New Business: Board Protocol – McCollough again discussed Board protocol. Board members are never to discuss Board minutes until the minutes have been approved and then no specifics are to be discussed; i.e. “he said, she said”. Kelly brought to the attention of the board that it is inappropriate for anyone on the board to use BTCA stationery for anything other than board business. A discussion further ensued relative to use of BTCA stationery by Board members. A motion was made by Fletcher, seconded by LaJoye that at no time should Board members ever use BTCA stationery for personal use nor should the Board title ever be used for personal use. Further to this motion is the fact that Board permission is not necessary when using BTCA stationery for Board business. Motion approved unanimously. Committee Appointments -7/1/09-6/30/10 – All current committee chairs have voiced an interest in remaining in their position for the next fiscal year. Therefore, LaJoye made a motion that the Board reappoints the same committee chairs for the upcoming fiscal year; seconded by Blackwood; approved unanimously. Schedule/Frequency of Board Meetings – Fletcher brought to the Board’s attention the possibility of having only four official times on record that the Board will meet. Following a discussion by the Board members, Fletcher made a motion that the Board meet four (4) times per fiscal year and this would not exclude having special meetings as the need may present itself; seconded by Jackson; approved unanimously.

Therefore, the meeting dates for this fiscal year (7/1/09-6/30/10) are scheduled for the second Tuesday in August (8/11/09); second Tuesday in December, (12/8/09) last Tuesday in January, (1/26/10); and Sunday, (5/16/10). Sweepstakes’ Judge – 2010 – McCollough brought to the Board’s attention that we needed to vote on a sweepstakes’ Judge for the 2010 National. Following a discussion of possible candidates, Blackwood made a motion that the Board asks Jean Craig to judge sweeps in 2010; motion seconded by Stoll; approved unanimously. Assistant Show Chair – 2010 – LaJoye will ask Marcia Terry to be the assistant show chair for 2010. AKC Delegate Report – The Board was in unanimous agreement that the Board would have a standing agenda report from our AKC Delegate, Marby Kelly. Kelly agreed. AKC Group Realignment – Kelly shared with the board AKC’s position on the proposed Group realignment. This was followed by a lengthy discussion which included how this proposal will be presented at the Annual Meeting. Kelly will present a discussion on this topic at the Annual Meeting and ask that everyone there to help in anyway they can to discourage this realignment from happening in particular maintaining the Poodle in the Non-Sporting/ Companion Group. Membership Applications/ Sponsors – Once again, the Board had a lengthy discussion about how new members may obtain sponsors. No resolution was reached at this time. Checks to Treasurer – Fletcher

brought up a concern voiced by our Treasurer, Nix, relative to receiving checks from the different committees via piece mail. This is an ineffective way to handle checks and Nix has asked that all committees collect the checks for which they are responsible and send them to the Treasurer all at one time. In addition, all checks from the National Show should be received by Nix no later than June 25 of each fiscal year following the National Show. There being no further Board business at this time, the meeting was suspended around 4:00 p.m. until after the Annual Meeting. The Board Meeting reconvened at 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 23, 2009 for the purpose of voting on new member applications. The following members were voted into membership of the BTCA: Clare Lodenstein (MI); Bruce Mathis (NC); Wayne Moody (GA); William Latham (CO); Kelly Palmer (VA); Thomas Noble (NY); Margaret Noble (NY); Candace Winter (OR), Barbara Grizlo (NY), Anne Keogh (MN); J. Hunter Wilson (PA); Babvin Andrea (Italy); Veronica Lipczynski (Italy); Paola Belletti (Italy); Ann Lord (Canada); Shawn Withrow (CA); Robin Garvin (OR); James Frissell (MA); Sarah Kennedy (MA); Merrilee Burgess (OR); Ronda Whitson (PA); Fernanda Barlow (MA); Christine Procaccini (MA); and Lisa Wakefield (MD) – WELCOME!! Jackson made a motion that the meeting adjourn; seconded by Stoll. Meeting adjourned at 10:30 p.m. Respectfully submitted, Joyce J. Fletcher VP - BTCA

Approved Board Minutes Boston Terrier Club of America, Inc. August 11, 2009 President Ola Jeanne McCollough called the meeting to order at 8:08 p.m. (EST). Present were Ola Jeanne McCollough, Joyce Fletcher, Lynda Bradley, Richard Nix, Dane LaJoye, Marby Kelly (AKC Delegate), Maureen Blackwood, Sharon Stoll, and Carolyn Gastley. Dick Wiest, Peggy Jackson, and Linda Jett, were absent. Selection of Judges for National Specialty Carl Gomes joined the first part of the meeting to discuss his proposal for the Selection of Judges at the BTCA National Specialty. He referred to the outlined proposal with conditions he previously submitted to the Board. He emphasized discussions he has held with other parent clubs (Bulldog, Doberman, German Shepherd, and Welsh Corgi), who all define this type of judge’s assignment as one of the most important. With no bias against All-Breed judges, Gomes feels breeder judges should be selected exclusively for National judging assignments. Many on the Board were in agreement. Ken Roux is the expected judge for 2011; therefore Gomes would like the proposal to become effective 2012. He firmly is unshakable regarding retaining breeder judges for the National Specialty. By doing this, the club is rewarding those eligible as there is no greater honor than judging a National Specialty. One of the requirements stipulated is to be a member in good

standing of the BTCA. The over-all purpose is to encourage breeders to become judges and for the BTCA to show appreciation for the hard work made by certain individuals and their outstanding job in promoting the breed. McCollough wondered how many breeder judges might be available, and Gomes answered with his estimate of approximately a dozen. Also mentioned was if voting runs on a 5-year cycle, plenty judges will be available with more becoming prominent over time. Gomes feels that while the membership became involved in previous voting, it should be in the hands of the Board, as they have the authority to set a precedent by selecting qualified names. Ten or twelve judges would be selected based on recommendations and then the general membership to vote on the names. There was some concern that judges for the Specialty had previously been presented to the membership and were voted upon, securing a slate for the next ten years. The dilemma is what should be done with those judges already selected. Would a re-vote from the membership be an acceptable answer? Yet, Fletcher reminded the Board that many of these judges have not been officially asked to judge the National. Blackwood thought the existing list of judges selected should be

reviewed, along with the wording or phrasing in the original motion. She cautioned the Board to be sensitive of the perception membership might have on changing protocol without input. A short discussion resulted in the realization there was a discrepancy in the list provided by McCollough, as decided upon March 2004, and what is understood today. Several judges were noted to no longer be judging or to have passed away, thereby eliminating several eligible candidates. (Stoll joined the meeting 8:27 PM) Gomes reiterated his proposal’s premise which sets forth that the Board should control the selection process of judges, with the Board providing approximately ten names, rather than sending inquires to the membership, which he feels would dilute the process. It was felt this topic would require further discussion and a Special Meeting held to complete the decision process.(Gomes left the meeting at 8:29 p.m.) Motion by Fletcher to hold a Special Meeting to discuss Gomes’s proposal, facts and list of judges should be on October 20, 2009 at 8:00 EST. Gastley seconded. Motion approved unanimously. Board Reports President – McCollough welcomed new members to the Board of Directors. Vice President – No report.

McCollough requested the meeting enter Executive Session and she left the meeting at 8:33 pm. Motion to return to the regular session of the Board meeting made by Blackwood, seconded by Gastley. Motion approved unanimously, McCollough rejoined the meeting at 8:50 pm. Recording Secretary – Motion by Nix to approve the minutes of 4-19-09 as corrected, seconded by Blackwood. Motion carried. Bradley reports she mailed the historical Meeting Minutes binder to Deana Jones to Archive. Melany Anaya has turned over all materials and is acting as advisor to Bradley. Corresponding Secretary – LaJoye stated he received a letter in May from AKC inviting the BTCA to participate in a Meet the Breed function located in New York this October. Carl Gomes will be leading this function. LaJoye sent Gomes’ name and contact information to AKC and they have contacted Gomes regarding this event. Fletcher has sent Gomes the Meet the Breed in a Box, which he has received. LaJoye sent a letter to Melany Anaya, thanking her for all her hard work after serving two terms as Recording Secretary to the Board. LaJoye also reported he sent a letter to AKC to approve all affiliate clubs’ specialties for 2010, and AKC has acknowledged receipt. He has mailed many Breed plaques to various affiliate clubs. LaJoye sent letters to judges Michael Staley and Jean Craig, inviting them to judge the BTCA Specialty, and they both have acknowledged receipt. Michael

Staley sent back his letter to LaJoye and Craig stated she will forward her letter within a couple of days. Staley’s fee is $3 per entry, two nights in a hotel, and .55 a mile for the round trip from his home to Atlanta. Treasurer’s Report – Nix provided a year-end report with a breakdown of monies in each category, and the balance being $78,445.33. He did inquire about the BT of the Year being a self-supporting committee and no funding was required by the BTCA, yet reports a loss of approximately $1058.35. The Board agreed that this discrepancy needs to be clarified and will ask the Liaison, Peggy Jackson, to request a detailed report from the head of the committee, Ken Roux. LaJoye suggested that serving the hors d’oeuvres at the event might have made a difference in the cost calculations, and should this fee be debited to the National Specialty instead of the BT of the Year. Otherwise, Nix reported there was a loss of $450 on the National Specialty overall, with Blackwood commenting there usually is a profit of $10,000. Fletcher inquired as to the reason for difference in revenue. LaJoye offered that the hotel was more expensive – the ballroom rental itself was three times that of 2008 – and using MB-F as a Superintendent was more costly as well. Additionally, the Health Committee and BTCA Silent Auctions did not receive as much income as in the past. Lastly, LaJoye stated that the show brought in forty less dogs and less RV spaces were rented as well. Nix will file necessary paperwork with the Commonwealth of

Massachusetts due November 15, 2009. Nix made a motion to donate $1,637.02 to the Canine Health Foundation, seconded by Fletcher. Motion carried unanimously. 2010 National Specialty – LaJoye has a signed contract from the Holiday Inn Select in Atlanta and the charges are less than in Connecticut. Reservations were opened July 15, 2009 and the cost per room is $79, with one complementary room for every forty room nights booked. The host club will also receive a free Hospitality suite and one other complimentary room in addition to those for the forty nights. The Host club will have two shows – one on Monday, which will be Sweeps and Regular classes and on Tuesday, Regular classes without Sweeps. LaJoye is currently working on finalizing the schedule of events and asked Gastley if she preferred the morning or afternoon for her performance events. She stated she preferred to do her off-site Agility in the morning and then have Rally and Obedience in the afternoon, mainly due to weather concerns and equipment set up. Julie Haddy is the trial secretary this year. Gastley has two judges in mind and will make contact with each. Fletcher asked of the typical response to this event, in which Gastley responded that approximately twenty two dogs is average, and the fees are $30 and $15 to run a dog in two classes, which is a typical entry. Gastley asked LaJoye to check with the Host club as to what time would be an acceptable start time for performance events on the Tuesday afternoon.

Wednesday the BTCA will have Sweeps at 8:00 am, the Futurity after lunch, and the BT of the Year at 6:30 p.m. The Judges Seminar will occur the same morning as Sweeps. Thursday will have Regular classes and Annual Meeting that evening, with Best of Breed on Friday and finishing with the Awards Banquet that evening. LaJoye has sent the show application to AKC a couple weeks previous and has been in contact/waiting for paperwork from MB-F. He feels that even being more expensive than previous superintendents; MB-F is the best choice overall. Marcia Terry will act as Assistant Show Chair and LaJoye reported to have most of his committee positions filled, but will be changing the representative in charge of Silent Action. Marby Kelly will act as Show Secretary and Sharon Stoll the vocalist. Brook Berth is working on a logo for the show with a take-off on the Coca-Cola theme – “Things Go Better with Bostons” Fletcher offered to assist Jason Shuckhart with the Banquet – taking reservations and working with the host committee. Currently, one task is finding a buffet for approximately $35 per person rather than $55 per person. Fletcher made a motion to table the discussion of: AKC Sportsmanship Award Chair/ proposal, Report on 2009 Boston Terrier of the Year, and Progress Report on 2010 Futurity to the next meeting when the Liaison, Peggy Jackson would be present to discuss. Seconded by Stoll. Motion approved unanimously.

AKC Delegate Report - Kelly stated she is looking into the situation of the dog whose ILP testing resulted in it being listed as a Boston. She reports the situation is being investigated, with AKC judges reviewing the dog to see if it should be qualified as a Boston Terrier. Several members thought breed clubs should have input in the decision process and Gastley offered to be contact for any questions and/or concerns. Mixed Breeds have their own category for performance competition; therefore the ILP category is designed for purebred dogs. Not much progress has been made regarding the AKC realignment of groups, despite the confusion and frustration over the Poodle being considered in the Companion rather than the Sporting or Working groups, which would be a more appropriate choice. Kelly will be attending the AKC Delegate’s meeting in New Jersey in September 15, 2009 and will report any new findings on the realignment. Fletcher asked of the reasoning for the Bred by Exhibitor being required to remain on a dog through the Winners class. Kelly explained the desire and reasoning is for the individual breeder to show a specific dog through the entire process and to its championship. McCollough brought the idea of advocating members staying in the host hotel at the National to support the club, and Fletcher suggested making this part of her message in the next issue of the Coast to Coast. Fletcher also reminded everyone to register puppies for the Futurity by 4 months of age.

Proposed New Members - LaJoye brought the attention of the Board to the ballots he mailed, complete with return address and postage, and to return responses to him within 10 days of this meeting. All prospective members have signed the club’s Code of Ethics. Unfinished Business William J. Degan Trophy for Winner’s Dog – Fletcher asked the Board to refer to the extensive research provided by Deana Jones in order to establish if Sarah Kennedy is eligible to receive and retire the Winner’s Dog Challenge Trophy. She won Winner’s Dog in 1999, 2002, and 2009 and according to how the rules were stated in the 2009 Specialty catalog and if AKC had to make a decision based on information provided; Kennedy is eligible for the trophy. Fletcher made a motion to send Sarah Kennedy the Winner’s Dog Trophy, seconded by LaJoye. Motion approved unanimously. Moving forward, wording in the 2010 premium list will need to be corrected and clarified. LaJoye to send a letter to Jones to request she forward the trophy to Kennedy. He will also send a letter to Kennedy, directly informing her of the Board’s decision. Towels Left Over from National – Fletcher stated that according to Jackson, the club had left over towels from the Specialty, and wanted Board recommendation of what to do with the items. LaJoye suggested making the leftover towels saleable items through Ways-N-Means in Atlanta, seconded by Gastley. Motion approved unanimously. She also suggested that if leftover

items become available at the next Specialty, the decision would be made at the show, since acting timely is key. New Business Voting for new Members – covered in Proposed New Members report above. Health Committee Survey – Blackwood presented an updated Health Committee Survey, which requests the status of health problems with the breed to help determine priorities in addressing problems. This survey is distributed once every ten years and it not limited to show dogs, since the committee is interested in the status of the breed as a whole. A new program by The Canine Health Institute, will offer to post the survey free of charge on the Orthopedic Foundation of America (OFA) website, www.offa.org. To find results, it would be placed under the “Breed Club Surveys” which will list many different breeds’ results. Because everything is computerized, using this method will yield immediate results. People will be offered two ways to complete the survey, either by paper copy or online, both being anonymous and confidential. For those that want to complete the survey by hard copy, the survey will be posted on the OFA website or mailed upon request. OFA could not provide a timeline or guarantee when the survey will be posted, due to OFA time constraints of data entry. LaJoye suggested submitting a note informing membership of the survey in the Coast to Coast. Blackwood stated she needs Board Approval to move forward with

this project before distributing the information to the membership. LaJoye made a motion for Board approval of the survey and to place an explanation letter in the C2C and link to OFA on the website so the membership can participate, seconded by Fletcher. Motion approved unanimously. Breed Standard (letter form Norm Randall) – McCollough stated that every member of the Board should have received a letter from Norm Randall, asking the Board to move forward on the motion for revising the breed standard. This motion had been discussed at the Annual Meeting and the motion failed. The original Breed Standard Committee was dissolved more than 2 years ago. If anything further is to be done in the future relative to the breed standard, a new committee will be formed. LaJoye to send a letter to Norm Randall explaining that the Breed Standard committee was dissolved over two years ago and he will reiterate the verbiage as written in the draft Minutes of the 2009 Annual Meeting. Trophies for 2010 National – Kelly has been approached regarding expressed disappointment with trophies at the National this year and she felt the presentation was lackluster. Nix would like items other than towels or crate pads to be offered, which are often presented at past BTCA and other shows. LaJoye as the trophy chair is open to ideas for other items to be offered. The budget has traditionally been set at $1500 per year. Stoll volunteered to assist with the trophy table. Blackwood wondered if the trophy budget of $1500 reflects

the monies collected for trophy sponsorship, to which LaJoye stated it did not. She also thought last minute changing of trophy sponsorships and not feeling the value of the prize matches the donation, can often lead to less than positive feelings on the part of the contributor/exhibitor. It was suggested to push catalog advertising, specifically the ¼ page ads, which will create additional funds. Targeting affiliate clubs to submit these ads would give them a chance at more exposure. C2C - Nix brought his concerns to the Board regarding the growing expenses associated with the publishing and mailing of the C2C club newsletter. This last issue incurred a loss of $2700, due to costs of $2500 for printing and $1200 for postage, while only receiving $1022. As the liaison, Fletcher feels there is a couple factors for the size and thereby cost of the magazine. Committee reports are included and the club doesn’t send separate mailings for show packets or the annual meeting announcement. She feels the C2C is one benefit every member of the BTCA receives and is also very well received. To help offset expenses a suggestion was made to possibly sell the front cover space, but Fletcher was opposed, as it would push the publication from a newsletter to the status of “magazine”. Nix voiced that he feels the C2C is already a magazine. Limiting one copy per household was another idea or to not send via First Class. Nix reminded the Board however, that membership was promised only first class

mailings with a $5 increase in dues. Since the printer does the mailing, it is difficult to limit the number of copies per household. The C2C is currently printed with the least expensive paper Fletcher commented, asked the Board for any further suggestions to cut costs without cutting quality, to contact her. Some other suggestions by Fletcher were proposed: • Remove all instructional forms and directions for: Futurity, BTCA Top Boston, Membership and any other forms that may be included. All this information can be found on the website and a link can be provided in the C2C. • Affiliate clubs -Accept only onepage advertisements and charge for any additional. Limit affiliate club show results to one page including photos • To reduce the number of pages, remove “filler pages” and limit pictures when necessary. (Nix left the meeting at 10:05 PM) Health Committee Grant proposals – Blackwood presented several health grant proposals that the Health Committee feels will benefit Boston Terriers and if approved, the Canine Health Foundation will match BTCA donations. Blackwood reminded the group that there is adequate money in the donor advised fund, has already been put aside for this type of cause, and will in no way affect the BTCA Treasury. She is requesting Board approval to inform the Canine Health Foundation the BTCA will participate in these grants. The total requested is $5500 for the following grants:

• Grant #1105 - “Understanding the Dynamics of Canine Influenza Virus: Transmission in Dog Populations and Intervention Strategies for Reducing Transmission” - the results of this study will provide valuable information to dog show organizers responsible for the health of dogs, and others in group settings. The Health Committee is requesting a $2500 donation to participate in this grant. • Grant # 1204 – “Development of a Diagnostic Method for Canine Atopic Dermatitis” – the proposal is to develop a simple blood test to tell if a particular dog is hyper-reactive to certain items. A $1500 donation. • Grant #1188A – “Capacity for Respiratory-based Thermoregulation in Brachycephalic breeds – to investigate how brachycephalic breeds can tolerate air travel. Researchers would like to have perimeters outlined so owners and airlines know safe temperature ranges for these breeds. Asking for a $1500 donation. Fletcher made a motion to approve the funding of these proposals as outlined and release money for these grants, seconded by Stoll. Motion passed. The 2009 AKC Canine Health Foundation National Parent club Canine Health Conference This conference is a 2-day seminar, previously held two years ago, with world class speakers on canine health. The request for reimbursement was rushed to Nix for the $200 application fee for this course. Sonya Baird,

who works for the University of Mississippi, has agreed to be the BTCA representative and attend the seminar in October. Last time she attended, she made DVDs on the seminars she attended and presented a poster of information to the Health Committee. Sonya will be able to absorb the information presented, collect literature and gain upto-date knowledge on different health issue in canines. Fletcher suggested to Blackwood, Sonya could report back to the Board on her findings and outcomes. Information can be placed on the website and links to the correct resources. Suggestions that a DVD created from the seminars could be for sale, or at least a link of where to find further information. In some years past, Blackwood commented that hard copies of the material were often provided. New Members - Donna Berman (VA), Dennis Dean (NV) Sheila Patterson Helton (NC), Kyle J. Homan (OH), Barbara Kelly (WI), Pamela Kruse (WY), Terry Lindsey (NY), Linda Mitcham (CA), Cathryn Murray (TX), Barbara Naas (CO), Sherry Pender (CO), Sterling Rabalais (LA), Linda Ryan (KY), Gayle Smith (AL), Mary Ann Staehle (OH) – Welcome! A motion was made by LaJoye to adjourn, seconded by Fletcher. Meeting adjourned at 10:26 p.m. (EST).

Respectfully submitted, Lynda Bradley BTCA Recording Secretary

Deterring Fleas & Ticks Naturally by Dr. Jeannie Thomason

I want to make it clear from the beginning that flea problems do not stem from the presence of fleas, but from health related and environmental circumstances, which enable to fleas to thrive and reproduce. Fleas are opportunists, preying on the weak and unhealthy whose immune system is not balanced and functioning at full capacity. If your dog is unhealthy, suffering from poor digestion, allergies, over-vaccination, etc., his ability to deal with and fight off fleas (or any parasite) is decreased. Pests will not be a problem for a healthy dog eating a fresh, species specific diet with a strong immune system. The cornerstone to health and disease prevention is proper nutrition. The role nutrition plays in over-all health is beginning to be understood and more veterinarians and breeders are beginning to recommend to their clients a raw diet or a home prepared one with supplements. At the very least, some are recommending that owners begin to supplement their pets that are still on a processed pet food diet, by giving them a daily dose of probiotcs, enzymes and wild salmon oil for optimum health and vitality. The food your dog eats should provide the nutritional components which are necessary for all the organs and systems of a healthy body to perform in harmonious unison. A properly functioning body does an amazing job at preventing disease and healing itself, and to do this it

requires the energies and nutrients of a species appropriate diet. Since dogs are carnivores, this means meat and bones. In terms of finding the proper diet for our companions, this means learning to look beyond our own needs, opinions, and agendas to address the natural needs of the animals whose lives we are responsible for. No matter what the commercials tell you, processed pet food is not optimal nutrition for our dogs. (Another story for another day) One of the first things I recommend is researching and then getting your dog off of commercial pet food. If a raw diet is something you are still not willing to do at this time, then a home cooked diet with supplements is so much healthier then feeding a processed, over-cooked, grain and carbohydrate loaded pet food. Providing a fresh, grain free diet and proper supplementation will do wonders to avoid future parasite infestations (whether of fleas or intestinal worms) by being far less taxing on the digestive system and by boosting the animal’s immune system. Supplements Probiotics and digestive enzymes are a must for flea sufferers. By assisting the transport of nutrients through the body and aiding in the breakdown and removal of waste products, probiotics and digestive-enzymes also help alleviate the food-allergy problems found in many commercially fed dogs with flea problems and help boost the immune system.

Minerals - Our soil, plants, and the animals that eat the plants that are then used for food, are woefully deficient in minerals. Processed commercial pet foods are decidedly lacking in key nutrients. Scientists theorize that mineral deficiency subjects our animals, to more diseases, early aging, sickness and destruction of well being. Processed pet foods not only use synthetic vitamins and minerals sprayed on after processing but they also often add too much or not enough for our carnivores needs. They base what and how much they add on what a human or an omnivore might need. Apple Cider Vinegar contains a host of beneficial vitamins and minerals, such as manganese, iron, calcium, sodium, magnesium, sulfur, copper, phosphorus, silicon, chlorine and fluorine. Raw meat and bones contain the perfect ratio of minerals, specifically calcium and phosphorus. Herbs -Burdock root, dandelion root and red clover are great blood cleansers and naturally eliminate waste, which help the immune system fight the flea bites and make the blood taste bitter to parasites. A low-alcohol tincture is preferred over the dried herb, squirted directly into your dog’s mouth or added to its water. Bovine Colostrum is an all-natural substance that contains transfer factors that work by “teaching” your dog’s immune system to identify

36 September 2009

Coast to Coast 0909.indd 36

9/24/09 1:32:55 AM

infectious agents. It boosts and balances the immune system. *Essential Oils* as Pest Deterrents Plants produce essential oils as their own survival technique to repel bugs This makes essential oils great insect repellents for animals (and humans, too. For centuries, EO’s have been used in a variety of ways to repel fleas, ticks and other biting insects. These oils are nature’s own God given repellants. They ward off unwanted hitchhikers. Some of the more common oils that act as flea and insect repellants are cedar, eucalyptus, lemongrass, peppermint, geranium lavender and citronella. Essential oils are naturally designed to repel fleas and ticks without using potentially dangerous pesticides found in common insect repellents. Essential oil formulations do need to be applied more frequently than synthetic pesticides, but the benefits far outweigh the exposure to harsh chemical smells and toxic side effects. Mixed with distilled water or pure Aloe Vera juice; they are great for misting your dog’s body any time that you go out where fleas would be likely to be found. Remember the flea spends 80% of his time in the surrounding environment, not on your dog. Be sure to use essential oils around the baseboards, carpet etc. Canadian fleabane and pure citrus oils contain dLimonene, which will not only repel fleas but will kill them on contact. Diatoms or Diatomaceous Earth (DE) Diatomaceous earth is a safe, non-toxic substance made up of fossilized, single celled organisms called

diatoms. Diatom walls consist of two parts and contain a mineral called silica. Under a very strong microscope, diatoms have very sharp edges. These sharp edges do not harm animals or humans. Diatomaceous earth’s surface is sharp to a flea or parasite’s skin (totally safe on our pets skin and internally). When sprinkled onto the dogs skin and a flea, tick, ant, spider, etc. comes into contact with the remaining sharp edges of the diatoms, they lacerate the waxy exoskeleton of the bug and the DE (diatomaceous earth) absorbs the body fluids causing death by dehydration. The larvae are affected in the same way which makes Diatomaceous Earth an excellent and totally natural pest control for fleas, lice, and other insects. It can be used by dusting the dog’s bedding or working into the carpet and under the seat cushions on furniture. DE (Diatomaceous Earth) are composed of approximately 3% magnesium, 85% silica, 5% sodium, 2% iron and many other trace minerals such as titanium, boron, manganese, copper and zirconium. When you sprinkle it on your dog’s daily food rations, your dog will get the essential trace minerals that are lacking in most canine food products, thus it enhances your dog’s diet as well as eliminating internal parasites such as intestinal worms! Easing The Bites and Itching For severe itching and inflamed or red spots from flea bites, the herbs, licorice root and/ or yucca taken internally work great as anti-in-

flammatory aids that have a natural “cortisone” effect. Externally, a rinse made of fresh cut lemons, calendula flowers, fresh rosemary or pure Aloe Vera juice sponged onto the skin will promote healing and help fight the itching. Lavender essential oil mixed with a little olive or almond oil and applied to irritated spots is very soothing and healing. In Conclusion remember that fleas are a symptom. The key to dealing with parasites is to make your dog undesirable to them, and to take steps to prevent an infestation. A healthy dog should not be troubled by an occasional flea. Nutrition is the cornerstone of health and in preventing disease and eliminating parasites, there is no substitute for excellent wholesome nutrition. There is indeed something a lot more healthy and beneficial that you can do for your dog to eliminate parasites without harmful and toxic chemicals. You can draw upon nature’s own pantry and provide your beloved companion what nature has provided for centuries. *NOTE & CAUTION – I can only recommend Young Living Essential Oils for their purity and therapeutic grade. Most oils purchased at health food stores are diluted or adulterated. Use caution! Some Essential Oils are not well tolerated by cats so should only be used in very small, diluted amounts with the supervision of your holistic veterinarian or animal aromatherapist with cats. jeanesbostons@thewholedog.org

What makes a Specialty Special? Location, Location, Location Ok. So it takes a bit more than just a location but GGBTC had a good start on a great specialty when they joined forces with the Woofstock Cluster Show at Solano County Fair grounds in Vallejo , CA. in June 2009. It was a weekend of tie dye, rock n’ roll, love beads, tattoos (even if they were temporary) and groovy exhibitors. The Club was well represented with a selection of “old hippies” including President Susan Krouse in her blonde Afro. Even the Sweepstakes judge joined the festivities wearing a purple tie dye outfit.
