BCA CENTER CURRENT EXHIBITIONS
Eric Aho: Headwater, BCA Center Exhibition, 2022
Sara Trad: What Still Remains, BCA Center Exhibition, 2022
ERIC AHO: HEADWATER
SARAH TRAD WHAT STILL REMAINS
February 18-June 12, 2022 First Floor Gallery, BCA Center Eric Aho debuts a new series of paintings that feature captivating scenes of the natural world. Inspired by the artist’s wanderings amidst the lush, forest landscape surrounding his home in Saxtons River, Vermont, Aho’s paintings convey a vastness and intimacy with the land. Headwater features monumental and smaller scaled paintings that capture the artist’s sensory experience of the natural world—reconstructed by the artist through memory and invention. Embracing romantic and modern traditions, Aho’s paintings of rivers, waterfalls, streams, and brooks reflect our relationship with the wilderness—as being a part of nature, yet also an intruder. In Headwater, Eric Aho invites us to consider what painting from life and representing the natural world means today. All Works Courtesy of the Artist and DC Moore Gallery, New York
February 18-June 5, 2022 Second Floor Gallery, BCA Center As a Lebanese-American artist living in Philadelphia, Sarah Trad explores complex themes of personal and cultural identity through film-based media and textiles. Her single and multi-channel videos appropriate and digitally manipulate scenes from popular movies, music videos, and television, drawing upon SWANA* cinema. For her first solo exhibit in New England, Trad will debut a collection of new singlechannel videos, and multi-channel moving image and textiles installations. In How I Met My Grandfather and Clench My Fists, Trad examines her relationship to her Lebanese paternal grandfather whose death became a familial catalyst for years of inherited trauma, mental illness, and shame in her Arab American family. Trad also investigates personal identity and the absence of representation of Arab-Americans in popular media in her new video, Abir, Forever, and her multimedia wall installations. *South West Asian/ North African
Eric Aho: Headwater and Sarah Trad: What Still Remains are sponsored in part by The Maslow Family Foundation and Gravel & Shea PC. Hospitality sponsor, Lake Champlain Chocolates. BCA Exhibitions are funded in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and Vermont Arts Council.

MORE THAN AN OBJECT: THE CONTEMPORARY STILL LIFE
SKY HOPINKA
June 17-October 8, 2022 First Floor Gallery, BCA Center More than an Object presents the creative possibilities of the often overlooked still life genre. The exhibit explores the vitality and inventiveness of the still life tradition through a multiplicity of innovative approaches and media including painting, photography, video, and sculpture. As a genre, still life has been practiced for centuries – from the artists of ancient Greece to 17th century Dutch painters and 20th century modernists. Often relegated to the art of imitation, the humble still life is constantly being reimagined by today’s contemporary artists who use the genre to explore the personal, metaphoric, social, and unconventional. Featuring a group of prominent contemporary artists, More than an Object reveals how the still life continues to evolve and resonate with artists, collectors, and viewers today. Participating artists include: Susan Abbott, Christina Erives, Oona Gardner, Ori Gersht, Libby Paloma, Mike Pelletier, William Ransom, Zachary Stephens, Christopher Terry.
June 17-October 8, 2022 Second Floor Gallery, BCA Center A member of the Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin and the Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians, Sky Hopinka is an internationally recognized multimedia artist who explores themes of language, culture, and homeland as he reflects on colonialism and nature of Indigenous identity. Sky Hopinka features two experimental films from 2018. Fainting Spells is an imagined myth for the Xąwįska (or the Indian Pipe Plant) used by the Ho-Chunk to revive those who have fainted. This dream-like film is voiced through recollections of youth, learning, lore, and departure. When You’reLost in the Rain considers experiences of loss and longing overlaid with images of the landscape, and was created in response to the 1965 Bob Dylan song, ‘Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues.’ Both short films include the near extinct Indigenous language, chinuk wawa, which when combined with fleeting images of the land and memory create a poetic, visual language.
More than an Object: The Contemporary Still Life and Sky Hopinka are sponsored in part by The Maslow Family Foundation, and by Leunig’s Bistro and Café. Hospitality sponsors, Farrell Distributing, Prophecy Wines, and Lake Champlain Chocolates. BCA Exhibitions are funded in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and Vermont Arts Council.
