HE NAME BUCHERER HAS BEEN SYNONYMOUS WITH SWISS TRADITION, CREATIVITY AND THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF CRAFTSMANSHIP SINCE 1888. That’s why we are delighted to take you on a journey into the fascinating world of watches and jewellery in the second issue of B BUCHERER THE MAGAZINE. We would like to introduce you to the latest innovations from the Genevan Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) and Baselworld, such as the perfect sports watches for a day at the beach or our exclusive “Bucherer BLUE EDITIONS” – a collection that we launched to commemorate the occasion of our upcoming 130th anniversary in cooperation with renowned watch manufacturers and with which we celebrate the colour blue. But timepieces are not our sole passion; we are particularly fond of rare and precious gemstones, of which, thanks to the excellent relationships that the Bucherer gemologists have maintained in many cases for decades, only the most exquisite arrive at our in-house atelier in Lucerne. The latest of our HauteJoaillerie creations evolved from these gems, combining passion and the most precise craftsmanship: a fabulous necklace made of rare emeralds and diamonds. And because we are writing Love with a capital L this year, we not only relocated our watch and jewellery shoots, without further ado, to the City of Love, but we will whisk you away to the most beautiful spots in Paris, a city full of style and sensual beauty. The fashion stylist and the photographer met after their studies in Paris and soon began working together on editorial, visual and graphical projects for the luxury sector. This resulted in their common objective to develop visions with el­e ­ gant, cheerful and radiant imagery.

Since 1964 Gisbert L. Brunner has been specializing in watches. The quartz crisis in the 70s in­creased his love of mechanical time­pieces, which were supposedly in danger of extinction. Starting in 1981, his passion for collecting fuelled his motivation to write numerous magazine articles and over 20 books on this profession.

The Dutch illustrator loves fashion and design, red and black, Hammond organs and pianos, jazz and blues. And in addition to his pencil, he values the computer pro­ grammes Photoshop, Painter, SketchBook Pro and Wacom. He thinks Lego is great and also designs clothes for the young fashion label Embrace.

The journalist, specializing in watches and jewellery among other specialized areas, worked for a num­ ber of years in the main editorial office of a renowned fashion and culture magazine. As an established expert in the luxury sector, she ob­ serves the beautiful, precious things in life and the changes they have undergone over the years.

The passionate communication and marketing expert comes from Austria and has been working internationally with her media studio since 2011. Her company offers its customers support on all creative ventures, from business cards to com­ pre­ hensive magazines, both on an analogue and digital level.

The fashion editor for the renowned magazine Numéro in Paris has already worked in the editorial office for various international publications. She regularly has ar­ticles published with major fashion photographers such as Patrick Demarchelier, Nathaniel Goldberg, Javier Vallhonrat and Nan Goldin.

Blue is by far the most popular colour for both women and men. The colour of distance, vastness and infinity has inspired artists, poets and the fashion world for centuries.

T

HE WORLD OF COLOURS IS THE LARGEST COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEM ON EARTH. MAN HAS RECOGNIZED AND USED THE POWER OF COLOURS SINCE THE VERY START OF HISTORY. COLOURS INFLUENCE OUR BEHAVIOUR AND OUR MOOD. We associate the colour blue with the vastness of a bright summer sky and the unfathomable depth of the sea. Blue is the colour of the earth as astronauts see it from space. It is the symbolic colour of reliability, trust and loyalty – a fact that is also exploited by advertising strategists. Insurance companies, banks, social networks – companies choose blue wherever trust plays a central role. The fact that we are so fascinated by blue is above all due to its royal heritage. It was already used to honour the gods on ancient Egyptian temple reliefs and the heads of pharaohs, and Cleopatra wore eyeshadow of a heavenly blue tone. Blue was a worldwide symbol of power. Rulers wanted to make a divine impression by using shades of blue. And as the pigment production was very laborious and costly, only kings could afford blue in those days. Today, blue is even

used as a colour code in politics: blue is a colour that evokes trust and exudes understatement during state visits, while a blue outfit can also convey a sense of self-assurance. It is therefore not surprising that it is hard to imagine the world’s stages and catwalks without blue. The jewellery and watch industry has also long since discovered blue. Blue sapphires are regarded as the most heavenly of all precious stones. That explains why it was believed long ago that the sky was a gigantic blue sapphire. The sapphire symbolizes immortality, purity and wisdom, and it adorned Lady Diana’s engagement ring and the crowns of many queens. The colour of the sea has also penetrated the luxury watch market for some years. Some watchmakers only use a blue strap or dial; others make the complete timepiece blue. The full repertoire of blue shades is used. Blue is suitable for sport watches as well as classic watches and is a real all-rounder. The magic of colours is the most beautiful, most secret power of the world and blue exudes the greatest charm of all.

A necklace for “veritable princesses”. It took over a year to collect the gems for this exceptional piece from Bucherer. The result is a precious combination of 43 pear-cut and certified emeralds (50.92 carat) from Zambia and fancy, marquise-cut diamonds (35.33 carat). And why has the emerald become popular again? In the high-quality gem sector, including rubies, sapphires and emeralds, the fashion influence is less significant. Rubies are always red, emeralds are always green and when we hear sapphire we instinctively think of dark blue. These three well-known base colours are not generally subject to fashion trends and, as such, have been somewhat forgotten in the past few years. We want to offer more in the line of the classics to raise awareness of these gemstones again. They certainly deserve more attention, after all, they rank alongside diamonds, as the most valuable gemstones. From our retailers selection it is clearly recognizable that the emerald is experiencing a gratifying revival. Even individual mine operators are promoting the intensely green stones. This results in an increase in the price for fine emeralds. Martin Julier, Head of Gemological Laboratory Bucherer AG

Martin Julier purchases the top gemstones for Bucherer. “The most popular gems at the moment are light blue aquamarine and the rose-coloured morganite. Like the emerald, they are from the beryl family.� Mr Julier, are gems also subject to trends, and, if so, how do these trends originate? The tendencies for coloured gemstones depend on fashion, but not exclusively. After the trend toward darker colours, pastels have suddenly become popular, above all light blue and pale pink. The leading trend gems in this sector are currently the light-blue aquamarine and the rose-to-salmon-coloured morganite. Both are from the beryl family, like the emerald.

So gemstones are currently an attractive investment? Gemstones have been extremely interesting for some time. In contrast to diamonds, there is no standard classification for coloured stones. And the deposits are extremely arbitrary. You can find one stone today and then nothing in the same mine for three months. The prices for a non-heated ruby from Burma have doubled or even trebled in the past five years. The same is true for the sapphire. The spinel is even five times more expensive. Diamonds have never experienced this type of appreciation to date. Why is that? On the one hand, the output in well-known mines becomes depleted. Burma is a good example. Gemstones have been found there for 2 000 years. All kings and emperors throughout the world have gemstones from Burma in their

crowns. If extractive mining is practiced over such a long period, at some stage the supplies become scarce. There are consistently less rubies and sapphires to be found and the consequence is that prices escalate. The other reason is the change in demand. In boom countries such as China and India, the people now have more money to spend on such commodities. This has an immediate effect on the gemstone market. Where do you purchase the gemstones? Major hubs are trade fairs such as Baselworld or the Inhorgenta in Munich. On an international level, Bangkok and Hong Kong remain the largest and most significant trading centers. Relationships that have grown over many years are also hugely valuable. I have suppliers with whom my predecessors worked 25 years ago. I do not meet these people at the trade fairs but somewhere in Bangkok in a normal office. We can also buy rarities there that are not even on display at the trade fairs.

ONLY ONE PRECIOUS STONE LIGHTS UP DEEP GREEN LIKE THE JUNGLE AFTER TROPICAL RAIN. The emerald is a delicate beauty that demands to be treated with care. EMERALDS RARELY EMERGE IN NATURE COMPLETELY FREE FROM INCLUSIONS AND CRACKS. These natural growth properties, called “Jardin” in technical lingo, can make the emerald somewhat sensitive to damage. But they are often an important sign of authenticity and can contain enlightening information about the country of origin. Their appearance can be influenced by a special treatment called oiling. This fills the fine cracks in the stone. Cleopatra even used this method in ancient times, states Martin Julier, gemstone expert at Bucherer. She bathed her emeralds in cedarwood oil. Today, synthetic oils are used, as they have even better aesthetic properties. At Bucherer, these alterations to the stone are always openly stated; the origin of the stone is also determined and recorded in a neutral gemstone certificate. Most emeralds today originate from Colombia and Brazil. Beautiful emeralds, like the stone in the Bucherer necklace, have been found in Zambia since the 1980s.

Bucherer and Tudor: two watch-making institutions that have been renowned for generations present an exclusive manufacture creation with a distinctive bronze case as part of the BUCHERER BLUE EDITIONS.

W

ATCH CASES CAN BE MADE FROM A NUMBER OF MATERIALS. BUT ONLY ONE MATERIAL ACQUIRES A HIGHER DEGREE OF INDIVIDUALITY WITH EACH DAY ON THE WEARER’S WRIST. It is all down to the aging patina, which the seemingly archaic bronze inevitably assumes in everyday life. As a result of oxidation, each watch evolves over time into a genuinely unique piece. Due to its high corrosion resistance, its resilience to salt water and other positive features, bronze is almost indispensable in marine technology – for example in the manufacture of almost indestructible propellers or different metal fittings for sailing boats. Divers also rely on this material for their gear. Despite decades of maritime references in the manufacture of functional divers’

watches, Tudor has not been in a position to warm up for the seawater-resistant material. The nostalgic-looking “Heritage Black Bay Bronze” did not debut until 2016 with a 43 millimetre large case. The engineers decided on a particularly effective alloy of bronze and aluminium when producing the sealed case, which is water-resistant to 20 bar. The research and development team took three years to decide on the ideal material. It guarantees contolled, homogenous and above all attractive patina development. Depending on personal wearing habits, the case assumes a dark chocolate shade over the years, in contrast to the screw-in case back, which Tudor intentionally produced in PVD-coated stainless steel. The the exquisite easy-grip screw-in crown originates from the “Big Crown” reference 7924, launched in 1958 and highly sought-after since then.

BUCHERER BLUE EDITIONS GALLERY

The Heritage Black Bay Bronze has been created as a tribute to the long maritime history of the Tudor company. This watch retains a distinct character and subsequently a high recognition value. It was therefore the perfect candidate for this BUCHERER BLUE EDITIONS-joint venture.

The “snowflake” hands from the 1970s, a time when Tudor delivered watches to the French marines, turn in front of the expressive, illuminated dial. For safety reasons the diving-time-rotating-bezel can only move in one direction. Tudor’s in-house automatic calibre with a dual-sided operating rotor mechanism, 70 hours’ power reserve, innovative silicon balance spring spiral and official chronometer certificate is classified as a genuine horological masterpiece.

It is hardly surprising that the newcomer spontaneously developed into a highly coveted best seller. The brand-new special-edition model, developed in conjunction with the long-established Swiss jeweller Bucherer, embodies a particular attitude. The striking blue of the dial is not without reason. It reflects the company colour of the soon to be 130-year-old family business.

HE HISTORY OF THE “DA VINCI” WATCH, A RECOGNIZED IWC ICON, DATES BACK TO 1970. THE STORY OF THE MOST SUCCESSFUL VERSION OF THIS WATCH LINE STARTED IN 1985. The graceful design with moon-phase display was very popular among cosmopolitan ladies because many of them relied, and still rely, on the secret power of the pale natural satellite of the Earth. For 2017, IWC has launched a completely revised “Da Vinci” collection. The traditional company with its history of almost 150 years has for the first time aimed this watch line primarily at women. The flexible lugs of the 36 mm stainless-steel case of the extremely feminine “Da Vinci

Automatic Moon Phase” ensure maximum wearing comfort on either wrist. The solid back bears an engraving of a well-known symbol by Leonardo Da Vinci, namely the Flower of Life. Behind it, a flat, reliable and, above all, precise automatic movement ticks with a power reserve of about 40 hours. It moves the small night sky disc one position further by mechanical pulse at 12 o’clock each day. The moon depicted on the disc takes 29.5 days to move across the semicircular window in the exquisite dial with applied golden hour digits. IWC chose a bezel set with 54 brilliant diamonds as a worthy setting for the fascinating spectacle. The best comes last: the really attractive price.

#1 ROLEX Zermatt The new Rolex brand boutique at Bahnhofstrasse 6 in Zermatt is a further milestone in the partnership between these two traditional Swiss companies, which has been in place for over nine decades. The opening proved hugely popular.

#4 IWC Frankfurt On Goethestrasse, in the center of the Frankfurt bank district, a new oasis for the art of watchmaking, luxury, innovation and elegance have been established. IWC Schaffhausen opened its first boutique in Germany in conjunction with the traditional jeweller Bucherer. A number of journalists and celebrities were in the city and were delighted to pop by for a glass of champagne.
