BLUE IS IMPRESSIVE TEXT

Louise Rosen

Bucherer and the Impressionist painters adopted blue with passion.

B

LUE IS A COLOUR THAT LIES AT THE HEART OF BUCHERER. Powerful and expressive, it has typically represented loyalty, strength, wisdom and trust. Loved the world over, it is also known to have a calming effect on the psyche, as it is the colour of sea and sky. Eternal, elegant, inspiring, it is the preeminent colour of emotion. It was particularly favoured by the Impressionist painters, who brought to the world a totally new

BUCH-MAGALOG-INFINITIE-BLUE.indd 16

presentation of light. By painting their ‘impressions’, they took an important step away from realism. The Impressionists were in many ways concerned primarily with feelings, whether the comforting tranquillity of a landscape by Cézanne, or, later on, the calm melancholy of Picasso’s Blue period (1901-1904). You can see Miró’s blue dancer at the Luzern Rosengart Museum, where you will also be able to see pieces from Picasso, Cézanne and Matisse.

LUCERNE TEXT

Nestled on the north shores of the lake, Lucerne is an ideal place to take a break. Highlights include the Summer Festival and the renowned Rosengart collection.

Y

OU COULD BE FORGIVEN FOR THINKING YOU’D WOKEN UP INSIDE A FAIRY TALE WHEN BREAKFASTING IN LUCERNE. There’s a timeless quality that comes down from the snow-capped mountains and imbues some of the more picturesque buildings. The city's medieval ramparts form a quiet backdrop to the history, art and restaurants that make it a spot well worth a quiet detour. Not only is it off the international beaten track of weekend city breaks, there’s also something otherworldly here, leaving you with a certain calmness after a meal in one of the rustic, traditional – sometimes secret – addresses. If you want breath-taking mountaintop views or lakeside tranquillity Lucerne offers easy access to the restorative and energising power of nature. The relatively

small scale of the city adds to its charm and reposing quality. Visiting is done on foot, by boat or by cable car. Despite its small size there are many visible signs of the past as you wander around amongst the halftimbered burghers’ houses, churches and fountains, not to mention the wonderful 14th-century covered bridge. For art lovers the Rosengart collection is a rare gem, a previously private collection of works by Picasso, Klee, Braque, Monet, Miró and other masters from the 19th and 20th centuries. In the summer months the city welcomes orchestras, conductors and soloists of high repute for a celebration of music in and around the exquisite concert hall designed by Jean Nouvel.

Mount Pilatus From an altitude of over 2000 m, the breath-taking scenery alone makes it worth a trip to Lucerne. There are different options for the ascent: panorama gondolas, an aerial cableway that “gives the impression of flying” or the world’s steepest cogwheel railway, which takes in alpine nature at close quarters. Available exclusively at Bucherer boutiques, each of these models is marked out by subtle touches of blue across its dial, movement or strap, uniting these timepieces under the banner of a common signature colour. Watchmaking Maison Piaget’s Watch Marketing Manager Quentin Hébert tells us: “This collaboration with Bucherer on the BLUE EDITIONS gave rise to an exclusive version of our Altiplano. Perfectly attuned to the times, its unique dial draws inspiration from a distinguished midnight blue suit dedicated to the most elegant of gentlemen, who feel at ease wearing a fabulous pink gold watch.”

As the symbol of Bucherer and its hometown of Lucerne, Switzerland, blue is more than simply a colour. Inspiring myriad artists, musicians and poets through the ages, it evokes the sky, the sea and the night, nobility and tranquillity. Naturally a popular choice to embellish our beloved timepieces right back through the history of watchmaking, blue is well known today by devotees of beautiful watches as a colour that brings a distinctly elegant and casual appeal. In the words of Chopard, “Blue represents tranquillity, sincerity, stability, trust, loyalty, wisdom, intelligence... It is also a colour that signifies precision, which is a crucial quality in our business.

As the central theme behind Bucherer BLUE EDITIONS, the colour blue – in addition to being the height of fashion and conferring a stylish allure – has impelled the Manufactures to develop movements at the cutting edge of technology. From the noble tourbillon complication to the charismatic chronograph, exhibiting all their movements’ characteristic accuracy and durability, the Bucherer BLUE EDITIONS collection showcases everything that is best in watchmaking. Audemars Piguet revisited its emblematic sporty-chic watches Royal Oak and Royal Oak Offshore for Bucherer BLUE EDITIONS, explaining: “This exciting collaboration has resulted in a series of three magnificent pieces, including a unique extra-thin tourbillon. A true reflection of the values we share with Bucherer, it offers the most elegant embodiment of our maxim ‘To break the rules, you must first master them.’”

“A pure aesthetic pleasure, designed for those who adhere to fine watchmaking values.”

For over a century Bucherer has been forging close partnerships, based on shared values of know-how and meticulous craftsmanship. The independent, family-owned Lucerne Maison gains the benefits of a tradition as fine as its heritage, which is beautifully expressed in the Bucherer BLUE EDITIONS. Building on this rich past but working towards the future, Bucherer seeks new inspiration and improvements every day so that lovers of timepieces will always be offered the best. “Our partnership with Bucherer has more than proved its worth over the years,”

says Edouard Meylan, CEO of H. Moser & Cie. “The creation of this Bucherer BLUE EDITIONS collection shows our commitment to Bucherer and that we support not only the Maison’s quest for perfection, but also its desire to select the most rare and refined watches for its customers.” The Bucherer BLUE EDITIONS are a pure aesthetic pleasure, designed for those who adhere to fine watchmaking values but want to assert their individuality through subtle details.

BUCHERER AND ROLEX CROSS PATHS

T

HIS IS A STORY OF WATCHMAKING PASSION AND INDEPENDENCE THAT SPANS NEARLY 100 YEARS. Brought together by their shared vision, Ernst Bucherer and Hans Wilsdorf, the founder of Rolex, began a successful partnership after their paths crossed at the turn of the 20th century. Through their shared entrepreneurial spirit, Ernst Bucherer and Hans Wilsdorf’s friendship was quickly transformed into a prosperous relationship that built on their wide-ranging and international experience. In 1924,

1 2 Ernst Bucherer had the foresight to secure an agreement with Hans Wilsdorf to make the family-held Bucherer Group a major retail partner of Rolex. Very quickly, helped by their parallel quest for high quality and excellence, this special partnership was marked by success. Through their pioneering precision, water resistance and robustness, Rolex watches were seen on the wrists of connoisseurs around the world. Meanwhile, the Bucherer group, on account of its expertise and the exclusiveness of its pieces, experienced remarkable change, turning its small jewelry shop in Switzerland into the most important watch retail company in Europe. Bucherer and Rolex share an incomparable relationship that has lasted through time without 3 losing any of its strength.

INSIDER’S REPORT TEXT

Louise Rosen

Coffee with Tobias Lanz, Head Diamond Buyer at Bucherer. of course it can all disappear in a split second. Diamonds especially can have invisible tensions inside and can shatter. In this case there might be a bigger loss, as one may only work with smaller stones instead. Ten years of training are therefore needed before one is ready to cut into the most precious gems.

Gently turning over a finished set jewel in one’s hands is a magical experience. To encounter the uncut gem is one usually reserved for gemmologists and professionals. The moment when man and earth’s most precious minerals confront each other for the journey of transformation is one that we went to find out a little more about from Bucherer’s Head Diamond buyer.

Cutting into a precious stone must involve a great deal of skill? Indeed. Skill and steady nerves! The high-risk moment comes when you make an incision into a rough stone. This is when the skill of the gem-cutter creates value – but

Creating a piece of Bucherer jewellery is a story told in many parts? Chapter one starts with the buyer. You must be able to imagine the possibilities of each stone. There is a great responsibility regarding your choices. I feel a lot of respect for the journey of each gem, in space and time. Then the designer, the goldsmiths and gem-setters and polishers also have a contribution that is on one hand extremely satisfying and on the other demands high levels of skill and concentration. There is little margin for error. But essentially it’s a story of imagination and teamwork fuelled by a love for beauty. Will we ever run out of precious stones? Today’s diamonds were created as a result of geological movements millions of years ago. The sheer cost of extracting diamonds protects us, for now, from over exploitation. The prices of the future regulate further degradation as does the fact of the ever-growing stock of polished diamonds in the world. A diamond does not pass or disappear. Once extracted and processed on the surface a diamond really does live forever.

THE MAKING OF MAGIC. These unique pieces are in many ways the Haute Couture of jewellery. They are designed using some of the world’s most rare and precious gems.

O

NE OF BUCHERER’S LATEST MASTERPIECES IS THE FANCY YELLOW NECKLACE. As yet unveiled to the public, it is an exceptional piece of jewellery, showcasing an exquisite pear-cut yellow diamond of more than seven carats. Twelve other yellow diamonds, each weighing one carat, are beautifully offset by over 150 white diamonds in a masterpiece that took over 200 hours of intricate work to create. The craftsmanship is visible not only in the cut of the stones but also in the unusual way in which the necklace moves to perfectly adopt the contours of the neckline, just like the lace collar that inspired the design.

INSIDE THE BUCHERER WORKSHOP, a team of more than 30 craftspeople create the unique pieces that bring such distinction to the House. The designer, goldsmith, gem-cutter and polisher each play a key role in the production of a piece of jewellery: whether pièce de résistance masterpieces, as seen above, or the numerous jewels that are made-tomeasure for private individuals.

Design

1

Once the design is finalised the precious stones are arranged – initially using a soft wax. This allows the goldsmith to find the optimal arrangement for the gems.

Goldsmith

2

The goldsmith works on the setting initially without the stones to ensure the fluid movement of the necklace, thereby magnifying the interplay of light and colour.

Gemstone setter

3

Once the gemmologist, designer and goldsmith have finished their part of the process, it is the turn of the gemstone setter. In order to guarantee the flawless quality of a stone it is necessary to examine it magnified many times over.

INSPIRING DESIGN. Ask a designer what influences them and you will often hear the word ‘everything’; fashion, architecture, nature, books or movies… JEWELLERY DESIGNERS HAVE AN ADDITIONAL INFLUENCE AND THAT IS THE SHAPE OF THE STONE ITSELF. One of their key distinguishing skills is to flatter and reveal the innate beauty of a rare stone, finding the shape and setting that best brings the gem to life. This is particularly the case with coloured stones. An unusually large emerald or ruby will often be crafted into a shape that preserves as much of its size as possible. It could be said that certain cuts are less “wasteful” than others. There is the design of the stone, but the stone

BUCH-MAGALOG-MASTERPIECES-U.indd 39

needs a setting and here the creative leap is much further, freer and more spectacular. One of the signs of a great house like Bucherer is the extravagance and complexity of the design of the finished piece. Something so simple in its immediately seductive wondrous beauty is also a great feat of technical expertise. And so, as with all Art, sometimes the greatest sophistication hides behind what appears on the outside to be perfectly, breathtakingly simple.

INSIDE THE WORKSHOP TEXT

Marc Fayad

By mastering its own movements, Carl F. Bucherer demonstrates its full range of technical skills and asserts its place up with the greats.

T

HE UNWRITTEN RULES OF THE WATCHMAKING INDUSTRY AND ITS DEVOTEES ONLY BESTOW THE PRESTIGIOUS DISTINCTION OF ‘MANUFACTURE’ on those that develop and produce at least one whole calibre within their own walls. Carl F. Bucherer has been doing this since 2008. For 2016, the brand makes a breakthrough by investing in a new movement called CFB A2000, which will establish the basis of Carl. F Bucherer’s future movements and new standards of quality and precision.

ONE MOVEMENT TO MASTER THEM ALL This new calibre, unlike typical automatic calibres, is powered by a peripherally mounted rotor, which revolves around the movement instead of over it, delivering energy when turning in either direction. One of the reasons that manually wound movements still exist is that watch lovers enjoy viewing the movement in operation. With the more practical automatic movement, the necessary weighted rotor gets in the way of a detailed full view of the movement. With the CFB A2000, Carl F. Bucherer takes a completely different approach ••

•• and provides an unprecedented solution. The rotor takes the form of a ring instead of a half circle, peripherally mounted, and is heavily weighed on one end to facilitate oscillation. This special ring rotor provides the best of both worlds, allowing for a great-unobstructed view of the movement, along with providing the convenience of an automatic winding movement. This technology was introduced by the brand in 2009 with its CFB A1000 calibre, the very first series production with a peripheral rotor in the watchmaking industry. This know-how has now been further developed and implemented in the CFB A2000, which, with its linear design, is both technically and visually characteristic of the brand. The ‘Côtes de Genève’ adorning the movement’s bridges and balance-cocks are a tribute to Swiss watchmaking tradition, while the impressive rotation momentum and power reserve of 55 hours make watches equipped by the CFB A2000 reliable and enduring companions for the elegant watch lover.

DYNAMIC MANUFACTURING In order to go further and continue growing with the CFB A2000, the brand opened its new manufacture in Lengnau (Switzerland). This building features a modern, vertically aligned infrastructure for fully developing the finest timepieces in-house. Carl F. Bucherer is a growing company responding to a market demand for an authentic product, manufactured with excellence. The brand is obsessive about quality control: all elements are checked and re-checked while every movement is tested for several weeks before being approved and sent for packaging. “With this centre of excellence, we are proud to have reached an important new level for Carl F. Bucherer. The new manufacture strengthens our identity as a traditional Swiss brand. This is a crucial step in our development and the result of a strategy of sustainable growth,” shares Sascha Moeri, CEO of Carl F. Bucherer.

LONGINES AND ALPINE SKIING

T

HE SKIER IS AT THE STARTING GATE. SPECTATORS ARE GATHERED AROUND THE PISTE, THEIR ANTICIPATION GROWING. MILLIONS MORE ARE WATCHING FROM HOME . Everything could come down to a fraction of a second. We take it for granted now, but such precision has only been made possible by decades of highly specialised research into time measurement. And Longines has been at the centre of this adventure for more than 80 years.

Since its beginnings in alpine skiing in 1933 in Chamonix, the watchmaking brand has tackled numerous challenges in the field of time measurement. With each innovation, the brand has brought new, unprecedented standards of precision to Alpine skiers, as with the “Snowgines” photocell, for example. The photocell was presented at the opening of last year's season and enables the skier's speed, intermediary times and finishing times to be measured with even greater accuracy. Since 2006, Longines has also been the official partner and timekeeper of the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup. In this context, Longines will also be present as official timekeeper at the next FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, to be held in St. Moritz from 6 to 19 February 2017. St. Moritz is not only an important venue in skiing, it is also the scene of elegant equestrian events organised in collaboration with Longines. These include the Longines CSI St. Moritz and the Longines Sprint Race, which takes place as part of the Night Turf event. As a result of the close links between Longines and the Swiss ski resort that go back more than a century, the brand has also become the Official Watch of St. Moritz. To mark the occasion, Longines launched an exclusive model designed especially for the famous spa town: the “Conquest 1/100th St. Moritz”. Touches of yellow and blue on the hands, dial and flange subtly hint at the iconic St. Moritz logo, which is also engraved on the case back. The watch is 41 mm in diameter and is equipped with a microcontroller with flash memory, allowing instant resetting of the watch and recording of intermediary times. Furthermore, time can be displayed to an accuracy of a hundredth of a second.

As the Official Watch of St. Moritz, Longines is extending its Conquest collection to include a new chronograph, measuring time to an accuracy of a hundredth of a second: the “Conquest 1/100th St. Moritz”.

LONGINES SUPPORTS TOMORROW'S CHAMPIONS Longines is proud to support not only the skiing stars of today, with Aksel Lund Svindal and Mikaela Shiffrin as Ambassadors of Elegance, but is also committed to the champions of tomorrow with the “Longines Future Ski Champions” race. Next season will see the Swiss watch company host this race for the fourth year running. With the support of their national ski federations, 14 young skiers (16 and under) from as many countries will compete in the giant slalom for the title of “Champion” and the

right to take home a Longines watch and a trophy. Furthermore, the winner's ski association receives a cheque to finance projects aimed at supporting the next generation of skiers. For the fifth time in a row, Longines is also awarding the title of “Longines Rising Ski Stars” to the best female skier under 21 and the best male skier under 23 in the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup. At the end of the 2016/2017 season, both winners will receive a Longines watch, a trophy and a cheque.

THE SOLITAIRE 1888 COLLECTION

© Helmut Stelzenberger

A symbol of love like no other, engagement rings at Bucherer combine a pureness of design with their highest quality stones. The jewel in the metaphorical crown is the Solitaire 1888 Collection. The 4Cs (cut, clarity, colour, carat) is a term that anyone with an interest in diamonds will know intimately. For Bucherer, it is above all the cut that is the most significant: this is the moment where the art and mastery of the diamond cutter is most visible. Symmetry is key, as the proportions will effect how much light is reflected out of the stone. In the 1888 Collection, only colourless and flawless diamonds are used. This maximises the sparkle that makes diamonds so unique. One light in the world that can never be extinguished…

JOY IS IN THE DETAIL

The beauty of jewellery is a story in two parts. The original gem, married to the creative and technical talent that reveals its full charm.

The cut of a diamond is all-important in revealing the full beauty from an initial rough stone. Precision and expertise are everything. Mastery can be seen on a brilliant, round diamond. Of the many styles to choose from, the round, brilliant cut is the world’s most popular. It is best suited to create sparkle. However, cushion, emerald and Asscher cuts are worth considering for their striking design – and with it, a sense of heritage. These solitaire rings all display diamonds of more than 5 carats. The cushion cut is accompanied by nearly 300 brilliants. The emerald cut, not only reserved for green gems, is the cut with the greatest surface area. The Asscher, one of the most renowned cuts, was invented by the company bearing the same name. The biggest diamond ever found was divided by them into 105 pieces. The two biggest stones were then set into the sceptre and the British Crown Jewels.

FIVE GOOD REASONS TO CHOOSE BUCHERER DIAMONDS 1. TRADITION AND REPUTATION

A family-owned firm steeped in tradition, it is the largest retailer of high-quality diamond jewellery worldwide, with a reputation for excellence. 2. ADVICE FROM PROFESSIONALS

Gemmologists are on-site in-store to provide expert guidance. 3. AN UNMATCHED CHOICE

The choice is unparalleled. Beautiful rare stones, some weighing over ten carats, as well as smaller more accessible gems, are all on display. 4. TESTED AND CERTIFIED

Our specialists test every single diamond according to the very strictest criteria. 5. EXPERT BUYERS

Bucherer relies on its own diamond experts, who buy stones directly from the world’s diamond exchanges, thus eliminating intermediaries and keeping prices highly competitive.

PEARLS Precious pearls, whether from Tahiti, Japan or the South Seas, have a refined elegance expressed in a surprising variety of shades. From a radiant creamy white, to greys echoing green-seas.

TAHITI PEARLS TAHITIAN, OR BLACK PEARLS ARE CONSIDERED AMONGST THE MOST BEAUTIFUL IN THE WORLD.

The turquoise, pistachio and pink reflections that illuminate these dark and mysterious pearls are produced by the black-lipped Pinctada margaritifera oyster. No longer exclusively pure and formal, pearls can be worn bold and rock‘n’roll contemporary, or casual and easy-to-wear. INFINITE BLUE Elegant deep blue is very much anchored within the tradition of the Bucherer brand. Sapphires are not just beautiful gemstones, their extraordinary characteristics earn them special admiration in jewellery creations. Recently, another blue stone, Tanzanite, has gained in popularity. After its discovery in 1967 by Maasai herdsmen in Tanzania, Tanzanite was celebrated as “The Gemstone of the 20th Century”.
