Greetings from Director | Gloria Award

Greetings from the Director Welcome… to the 27th edition of the “biggest and best Latino Film Festival in the United States.” The film programming represents the diversity of themes and genres of Latino filmmaking from Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain, Portugal and the United States. The Chicago Latino Film Festival continues to play an active cultural role in Chicago, a world-class city, with one of the most diverse Latino communities in the United States. We encourage people from all backgrounds to become immersed in our culture by viewing films that will open their eyes to the beauty of these counties and their people. We are extremely proud of our work and thankful for our growing audience, that has followed the Festival for more than a quarter of a century. We are committed every year to secure the best films, so we can keep engaging new audiences. Despite the many challenges presented by the current economic crisis, we are dedicated to producing the best Festival ever. The Festival serves as a vehicle to break barriers and stereotypes perpetuated by mainstream perceptions of Latinos —who come from more than 20 different nationalities, races and socio-economic groups. We’re grateful for the support from our proud sponsors, foundations, and government institutions. I am fortunate to work with a committed staff, Board of Directors and more than 100 volunteers. Together, we have done our best to make the 27th Anniversary of the Chicago Latino Film Festival a spectacular success. I am very grateful and appreciate everyone’s unwavering support! Thank you and enjoy our films!

STUDENT FILM SEGMENT The first place winner of the 2010/2011 Columbia College Chicago Latino Student Film Festival is Alexandra Rodriguez, director of the 6-minute short Blood Relatives. The films will be presented Saturday, April 2 (2:00 pm) at Instituto Cervantes 1st Place Blood Relatives Directed by: Alexandra Rodriguez Year: Junior Run Time: 6 minutes 13 seconds

Honorable Mention Out of the Shadows! Directed by: Josach Year: Senior Run Time: 9 minutes 35 seconds

Blood Relatives follows two young boys in peril trying to escape their parents who have recently become zombies. As they run, hide, and evade the zombies, they reflect on past family events and happier times. With time running out, the humanity and love in their memories complicates their decision to either kill their zombie parents or risk their own lives.

Ken and Ireri are two members of the Immigrant Youth Justice League who have grown restless of the country’s broken immigration system. Mobilizing with other youth around Chicago, these activists prepare for a ‘coming out of the shadows’ march. A critical documentary in analyzing this generation’s voice, Out of the Shadows! shows the passion of young activists as they lead the youth to Federal Plaza, culminating in a courageous act of coming out in public as undocumented citizens.

2nd Place TAG Directed by: Melissa Flores Year: Senior Run Time: 9 minutes 55 seconds TAG delves into the subculture of graffiti as an art form. Some believe it is a misunderstood form of expression while others see it as art being co-opted, corrupted, and used for criminal means. The film also explores the positive and negative effects this art has on the community and on the youth who participate, admire, or abhor it. TAG is the second film in a four-part series examining the four pillars of hip-hop culture: break-dancing, graffiti, DJing/beatmaking, and emceeing.

Honorable Mention My Inspiration, My Sister, My Firework Directed by: Amalia Gonzalez Year: Senior Run Time: 3 minutes My Inspiration… is a reflection of the relationship between the director and her inspiration, her 25 year-old sister with cerebral palsy who is several years her senior.

An airport holding room sets the stage for this Ecuadorian cinematic Lord of the Flies-sequel tale of humanity left to its own devices. After a group of strangers are detained from their flight, they become unwilling roommates and companions as they try to figure out when they will be allowed to leave. Among them is Prometeo, an eccentric magician trying to show everyone the bright side of the situation. Unfortunately for him, chaos seems to reign supreme. In a place where one is usually going somewhere, this film shows how people become disoriented when forced to stay.

Each city has its own secrets, but it’s inside the houses, after their silent walls are built that they hide the most intense and human secrets. Casa del Alabado was built in 1671 as part of the historical center of Quito and has survived changes over time. But within the walls of this extraordinary architecture, hides the tragic history of the indigenous masses. The masons who restored Casa del Alabado move us as they narrate their lives and aspirations with humor. Labranza Oculta is a documentary about the lives trapped within the walls of history.

Visa To Paradise Mexico, 2010, 108 min. Director: Lillian Lieberman A passport often means the possibility to travel to a new destination. Here, it is quite literally the ticket to life, and those that have power to issue them hold lives in their hands. Gilberto Bosques, Mexico´s General Consul in France between 1939 and 1942, saved thousands of lives by issuing passports to Jewish and Spanish Republicans who were being displaced from occupied Spain and Germany. Bosques himself often filmed all the areas he visited, contributing rare footage of those exiled. Perhaps his name is not commonly known in history, but without a doubt Gilberto Bosques nearly single-handedly saved numerous lives with the stroke of a pen.

How to prepare it: leave the characters to soak for a day, stir well until the different stories thicken and end up forming a thick and spongy mixture. Season generously with a mix of drama and comedy, letting the ingredients soak up the other ingredients’ flavors. Put in the oven and wait for those pieces of lives that are not ours, but that could be, to cook gently. Dress with laughter and, finally, serve on a good table so that anyone who wants to can spend one and half hours tasting and enjoying 18 meals.

I am the Queen takes a look at the often unobserved life of Chicago’s Puerto Rican transgender community. This film documents the Cacique Pageant, the first annual transgender pageant held in Chicago’s Humboldt Park neighborhood. I am the Queen follows Bianca, Julissa and Jolizza as they prep for the Cacique Pageant and negotiate being a teen and transgender in a predominantly Latino neighborhood of Chicago. The film exposes the restructuring of the family unit experienced by pageant participants who are often distanced from their biological family only to find kinship among others in the Puerto Rican transgender community.

Saturday, April 2, 6:30 pm, Doc Films Sunday, April 3, 3:30 pm, Instituto Cervantes DRAMA

The Storm that Swept Across Mexico talks of a figurative storm, but it does not make it any less powerful. The film captures the essence of the Mexican Revolution of 1910, and goes on to showcase how this revolutionary fervor was not contained in Mexico, but made ripples all over the world. The film follows the chronology of the conflict using interviews, impressive and hardly before seen footage from the era. Ultimately, in recoiling from the Porfiriato and recognizing its own homegrown heroes, Emiliano Zapata, Pancho Villa, and Lazaro Cardenas –Mexico carved its own nationalistic identity with courage.
