We are working with Appleby Community Enterprise (ACE), Appleby Town Council, Cumbria County Council and the Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership to create a plan to develop the local economy and help businesses, including those affected by the recent floods to prosper. This work will take time and input from many organisations to access the funding required, but by working together we can generate a positive impetus to make this happen. If you have ever visited Appleby you will know that it has plenty to offer on the food front! Like many places in Eden you can be spoilt for choice on where to tantalise your taste buds. Try the advice of Appleby Tourist Information Centre on page 4. Kirkby Stephen is embarking on closer links with the Yorkshire Dales National Park, we speak to Kirkby Stephen Town Council about how they are welcoming this change with a new event The Westmorland Dales Day on 31 July 2016. We also profile the town’s community run Visitor Centre and see how the Community and Council Centre there has benefitted from an Eden Community Fund grant. Penrith and Eden Museum also features on pages 21 and 22, with the acquisition of the important historic local painting ‘Druids Cutting Down the Mistletoe’ by renowned artist Jacob Thompson. You can also give us your views on how we can improve the Museum by taking part in our survey. Cycling is back with a bang in Eden this summer with the return of the Tour of Britain on Monday 5 September 2016 and a series of Sky Ride local events for you to try in Eden for FREE! You may be aware that three members of the Council’s Senior Management Team are retiring this year; they are Paul Foote, David Rawsthorn and Ruth Atkinson MBE. They have all served the Council diligently over many years and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their service. I hope you enjoy reading this issue and have a great summer. An Appetite for Appleby?
S
ituated in a loop of the River Eden with lovely riverside walks, historic buildings, traditional shopping and accessible by the Settle to Carlisle railway, Appleby in Westmorland is a delightful place to stay and visit. The town has a fantastic food offer to discover with quality local produce, lively cafes, great pub food and sumptuous hotel dining.
Manor Hotel and Garden Spa, just outside the town. In the centre of town the re-opened Tufton Arms Hotel adds to the choice of great places to eat.
How about choosing a picnic by calling in and selecting your favourite savouries from Low Howgill Butchers (they offer great cakes too) then to the Greengrocers for fresh salad and fruit and next over to the Appleby Bakery for homemade bread. A bottle of local wine from the nearby High Cup Winery would make a decadent addition, accompanied by a selection of local cheeses from the Appleby Creamery to finish off. Café culture is another delight on your foodie discovery. The newly reopened Bojangles Bistro Cafe offers a great range of homemade dishes and cakes in a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. The Eden River Café, just across the road offers a wide range of coffees, teas plus homemade baking and food in cosy surroundings. It is worth strolling around the town to find more foodie delights and why not take some local delicacies home as gifts? More local produce can be enjoyed at the Appleby Agricultural Show held on 11 August. The show dates back to the 1800’s and provides the opportunity to see fine local livestock as well as a range of events. The food experience is far from over and sampling pub menus will be very tempting, the choice is yours. A spa experience can be combined with fine food at the Appleby 4 | All About Eden

ACE support for Appleby businesses With Eden District Council Leader, Kevin Beaty How is the Council involved with ACE and supporting businesses in Appleby? We are working with the Directors of ACE (Appleby Community Enterprises) to create opportunities for Appleby’s economy to prosper. What projects are ACE currently working on? The Council has just signed a Service Level Agreement with ACE for them to provide business and engagement support services in Appleby. Initially this will be encouraging businesses who have been affected by the December 2015 Floods to use the Business Hub based in Appleby Library for support and to help access any grant funding available to develop their businesses. How will ACE be contacting businesses? ACE will be visiting local companies in person to see what help they can offer and to survey their needs. They will also be contacting businesses on the Cross Croft Industrial Estate to encourage them to visit the Business Hub in Appleby Library and signpost them to what
assistance may be available via the Cumbria Growth Hub to help meet their needs. All this information can then be drawn together into a plan to help Appleby’s economy grow in the future to overcome the effects of the flooding six months ago. ACE will also be working with individual businesses to help ensure they have a good level of preparedness in case an eventuality like the December 2015 floods ever occurs again. ACE will also be encouraging businesses to work more closely together by supporting the local Chamber of Trade. What other initiatives are in the pipeline? ACE now have the funding for www.visitappleby.com and are working to create a new brand identity and website for Appleby and a social media campaign. ACE have a bank of over 100 images for businesses to use and will be launching the brand with posters, postcards and stickers soon. Which other organisations are supporting ACE with this work? This work is at an early stage but ACE are being supported by Appleby Chamber of Trade, Appleby Town Council, Eden District Council, Cumbria County Council and Cumbria LEP.

Councillor Malcolm Temple tells us more. How long have the Over 65s Active Life Sessions been running at Penrith Leisure Centre? The sessions have been taking place now for around 18 months and have proved really popular with local people. We have a great group of regulars who attend Penrith Leisure Centre now on Tuesdays and Fridays, who really enjoy the fun activities, along with having a good chat over a free cuppa and a biscuit. How are you involved? I am a District Councillor for Penrith and have helped North Country Leisure to organise the sessions for local people to enjoy and benefit from. I regularly attend the Leisure Centre to take part in the Over 50s Walking Football and am keen to support activities that encourage older people to lead an active lifestyle.
The sessions are also proving beneficial for people who have medical conditions and have been referred to the Leisure Centre by their GP so they can be more active to improve their general health. There is also a great social side to the Active Life Sessions with people enjoying a free cuppa after the sessions and members of the group also go out for afternoon teas, so it is a great way to meet new people too. When do the session take place and how much do they cost? Active Life Multi Activity Sessions for the Over 65s take place every Tuesday from 1pm-3pm and every Friday 10am-12pm at Penrith Leisure Centre, costing £3 per session. For more information book at reception or call: 01768 863450.
What are the benefits for people who attend the Active Life Sessions?
Are there plans to expand the Active Session to other areas of Eden?
Many people who are now regulars at Active Life Sessions had not been to the Leisure Centre before. So it is a great way to try out the activities and see what fun you can have. Loads of activities are available, all of which are supported by qualified instructors and are suitable for people of all abilities. That include: swimming, aqua fit, bowls, racket sports, gym and fitness, shortmat bowls and outdoor sports.
Yes, the Council is planning with NCL to deliver a similar programme in Appleby with a proposal for this to commence this summer. It is the intention to expand this programme further in the autumn to more rurally isolated parish which do not have access to centralised leisure facilities. This will be a pilot project to see if a demand can be established to make the service sustainable.

ummer 2016 promises to be another action packed sporting calendar with the European Football Championships, the Rio Olympics, Wimbledon, The Tour de France and Tour of Britain which comes through Eden on September 5th. To provide local young people with their own sporting opportunity to take part in, Eden District Council and North Country Leisure are working in partnership to offer a programme of sporting opportunities throughout the school holidays. The Holiday Sports Programme offers children and young people the opportunity to take part in a series of instructor led sports courses, with the chance to try as many sports as possible. The Holiday Sports Programme caters for young people aged 5+ and aims to increase children’s knowledge and sporting skills in a fun environment.

Help to get Online at Kirkby Stephen Community & Council Centre CENTRE MANAGER Kellie Bradburn-Sims tells us more How can people get help to use the Internet at the Community & Council Centre? We can help with all computer needs from printing documents, opening files to searching the Internet or accessing emails. On Fridays, people can book a 30 minute one-to-one IT support session. We help people to use devices such as laptops or iPads! We have delivered over 85 sessions to help people become independent online. If you haven’t used the Internet or email before is this a good way to start? If you are new to IT, having someone guide you through the essential steps and explain information that is required and crucially what to remember for next time is beneficial. Is use of the computers free? We offer concessionary use of our computers to certain groups of individuals, depending on age and circumstances and this summer we are offering free use of the computers to all for a maximum of two hours. When are the computers available? Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am-5pm. How were these facilities funded? Thanks to funding received from Eden District Council’s Eden Community Fund, a Cumbria County Council Community Grant and Kirkby Stephen Town Council we upgraded our suite of computers so we can offer an improved service. 16 | All About Eden

Returns to Eden on Monday 5 September 2016 On Monday 5 September The Tour of Britain (ToB) will return to Eden again as Cumbria hosts the second stage of British Cycling’s premier road cycling event. The ToB gives cycling fans the opportunity to see the world’s best teams and riders competing in the UK’s highest ranked professional stage race and the country’s largest free-to-watch sporting event.
Stage Two will begin in Carlisle before heading to Penrith, and over Eamont Bridge, Pooley Bridge and along the shores of Ullswater before travelling to Keswick and Ambleside, with a finish atop the testing 11% climb of Beast Banks in Kendal.
The proposed 195-kilometre route includes the climbs of Whinlatter Pass above Derwent Water, averaging 4% over its six-kilometre length and the iconic climb of The Struggle, which will be inside the final 30-kilometres of racing, rising from Ambleside to the Kirkstone Pass at an average gradient of 8%.
Communities are being encouraged to once again support the event by holding events, painting bikes yellow and knitting little jerseys. There will be again be coverage of the ToB on television which gives Eden a great opportunity to showcase the area especially important following the December floods.
Last year the ToB saw thousands line the route with the big finish at the top of Hartside and many communities got involved with events and got creative with yellow bikes lining the route.
Eden District Council will be offering small grants for ToB community events again and can help publicise any community events via our websites and social media accounts Twitter @EdenCouncil @VisitEden @InvestinEden or find us on Facebook. Trio of Thompson paintings for Penrith and Eden Museum
‘The Druids Cutting Down the Mistleoe’ by Jacob Thompson from 1832.
Curator, Dr Sydney Chapman tells Museum us more. Penrith and Eden Museum has acquired another work by renowned local artist, Jacob Thompson. What is the painting called? The painting is called The Druids Cutting Down the Mistletoe. It was first exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in 1832 and shows figures in a wooded clearing in the Eden Valley with the iconic Bronze Age stone circle of Long Meg and Her Daughters, clearly visible in the distance. Why did Jacob Thompson paint this scene? According to his biographer, Llewellyn Jewitt, it was commissioned by Colonel Samuel Lacy, remembered locally as the creator of ‘Lacy’s Caves’. The painting provides an evocative example of how prehistoric sites 20 | All About Eden
were admired and represented by British artists in the 18th and 19th centuries. What more can you tell us about Jacob Thompson? Jacob Thompson was born in Langton Street in Penrith, the eldest son of the Quaker factory owner Merrick Thompson whose father had built Factory Yard in Friargate. He first worked as a sign painter before the Earl of Lonsdale, William Lowther, recognised his talent and helped him to train in the Royal Academy Schools of Art in London. He quickly excelled and became a successful portrait painter with a studio in Hanover Square, but by 1841 his love of the landscape of Cumbria drew him back here for good. How did the Museum fund the purchase of the painting? The painting was valued at £30,000 by Christie’s of
