In an area of outstanding natural beauty, Cumbria and the Lake District is home to some of the finest food and drink in the UK. World famous sweet treats tucked away in the corners of Grasmere, internationally renowned sticky toffee pudding from the picturesque village of Cartmel, and authentic ale from Cockermouth nestled into Cumbria’s brewing heritage: as well as many more microbreweries to visit and sample their wares. Cumbria has so many different types of food and drink to offer for the discerning Foodie, try one of the multiple award-winning tasting menus with the largest selection of wines and whiskies. Have the best of both worlds, step outside one of a plethora of restaurants and country pubs to be met with breathtaking scenery in a tranquil rural setting whilst never being too far away from the hustle of the town centres. Keswick, Cockermouth, Penrith, Ambleside, Kendal, Kirkby Lonsdale to name but a few and the county’s vibrant city of Carlisle, all boast food and drink markets with artisan producers, cafes, tearooms, and of course delicious afternoon teas. Visit this beautiful part of the world and find an incomparable match to anywhere else in the UK.

Think of Cumbrian food and the iconic Cumberland Sausage, Sticky Toffee Pudding and Kendal Mint Cake probably spring to mind. No trip to the Lakes would be complete without trying at least one of these renowned products yet the county offers so much more than these traditional associations suggest. Cumbria’s food and drink industry is vibrant and thriving with an army of passionate farmers and producers committed to producing wonderful food and drink. At the 2016 Great Taste Awards no fewer than 30 Cumbrian products were awarded coveted Great Taste Gold Awards. Cumbria has a tradition of producing wonderful livestock and offers some truly unique regional delicacies such as Herdwick lamb which is reared on the heather and wild grasses of the Lakeland hills offers a succulent and slightly gamey flavour. The regions strong farming heritage is also well represented in our counties larder with a wealth of cheesemakers, traditional butchers, jams and pickle producers, cake, biscuits, dairy ice cream and pudding makers. Yet alongside the traditional you will find the unexpected…Cumbria’s Mr Vikki’s fusion pickle brand is loved by chilli lovers the country wide and recent new Cumbrian products I think are unmissable are the Magnificent Marshmallow Company’s lip smacking lemon variety and the simply divine Handmade Ice Cream Company’s gingerbread ice cream. Cumbria’s brewing industry is booming. From CAMRA decorated traditional ales like Loweswater Gold to up and coming craft breweries, if you love ale you are in for a treat. Our county not only offers interesting food it offers a whole range of exciting food experiences. I would urge you to visit one of the many wonderful independent farm shops, butchers, bakers, deli and cheese shops as you travel around the county or to take in one of our counties many farmers markets. If you are visiting in the summer taking in an agricultural show is another brilliant way to experience Cumbrian produce from field to fork with livestock on show, cookery and bakery competitions and food tents bursting with local produce. Come feast!

Philip Cranston Philip’s family business Cranstons Quality Butchers have been championing local produce, since 1914. Cranstons Cumbrian Food Halls showcase Cranstons own traditional butchery produce along with food and drink from almost 50 Cumbrian producers.

The café has a stunning 100 foot long glass wall looking down on the octagonal walled garden and up to Skiddaw; the walled garden built from reclaimed materials sits on the same spot as the old kitchen gardens which Beatrix Potter credited as her original inspiration for Mr McGregor’s garden in The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Entry to the garden is free and the café is open from 9am until 6pm daily, or dusk in winter. You can get to Lingholm by car, we are just 5 minutes from the A66, with a free car park for customers. Catch the Keswick launch to the Lingholm Jetty, or arrive by foot along the Catbells path, it’s just a 10 minute walk from Portinscale or a flat, gentle 35 minute walk from Keswick.
