It’s always been our aim, here at Lancaster Music Festival, to educate as well as entertain audiences so we are delighted to welcome back Menno Gootjes, the dazzling guitarist of Dutch rock legends Focus. He will perform our first ever music masterclass at the Storey Institute on Friday 14th October. A renowned session player and teacher in the Netherlands, Menno has toured the world as a member of Focus, who in the 1970s had worldwide hits with the singles Hocus Pocus and Sylvia as well as critically acclaimed albums Moving Waves, Focus 3 and Hamburger Concerto. Whilst most famous for his reworking of the classical- and jazz-infused progressive rock of Focus, Menno’s c.v includes blues and rockabilly, death metal, goth rock, hip hop and classical guitar amongst many others. Born into a musical and artistic family, Menno started classical piano lessons at the

age of 8 and after picking up the electric guitar at age 15 he quickly developed a love for heavy metal, progressive rock and blues. He graduated cum laude in Jazz Guitar from Rotterdam Conservatory and whilst studying he successfully auditioned for Thijs van Leer’s band Conxi in 1995 before joining Thijs for the Focus reunion in 1997. He joined the reformed Focus in 2010, appearing on their Focus X and Golden Oldies albums. Between worldwide tours and session recording, Menno teaches guitar at the Rotterdam Conservatory Codarts, the Rockacademy in Tilburg and the Herman Brood Academie in Utrecht. This masterclass will deliver a session of technical insight and demonstration, backed with stories from his varied recording and touring career, to an interested but limited audience.

They have driven their tour vans across Europe in the same direction, but the same cannot be said about their music; Three bands inspired by rock, with three distinct styles. Meet this year’s bands from Eastern Europe.

he’s been looking for to really define himself as an artist, and the answer to his “musical search”. With the classic instrumentation of vocals, guitar, bass and drums, this musical switch-up is now a way for them to define rock music their own way, with the inclusion of multi-layered sounds, pure energy and true rock’n’roll soul.

The Skys The Skys have been Lithuania’s number one proggers since 1995, and are certainly the most recognised Lithuanian band abroad. Playing experimental rock their own way has set them aside as a band to watch out for.

We can certainly count on those charismatic performances we’ve seen in previous years, which we all know and love from these band members. Except now there will be that added edge to the music that we haven’t seen before… Lucky us!

Together, they have released five albums over the years. Each one is a testament to great musicianship and doing what they do best. Their latest album, ‘Colors of the Desert’ has influences from Pink Floyd, Dire Straits and early Genesis albums, and is receiving widespread, international radio air-time, whilst some singles are climbing charts around the world.

GlassPop’s debut album is planned for the beginning of the next year, but in the meantime we cannot wait to see what they have in store for us this year. Maze of Sound Maze of Sound will take you on a musical journey from Poland into the depths of their fantasy world. Their complex prog rock arrangements combined with theatrics, props and the materialisation of different characters will have you mesmerized. This five-piece perform their own brand of “rock theatre”. Inspired by the likes of Peter Gabriel, Genesis and Marillion, they have carved a unique sound and act for themselves. They have played many concerts and festivals throughout Eastern Europe, with a recent trip already bringing them to the UK earlier in the year. As well as performing in Liverpool, they were able to record a couple of singles whilst in London, at PlaySoho Studios.

With a long list of international gigs and tours, in Europe, Canada and the USA, they have performed to vast audiences and festival crowds. They have shared stages with the likes of Rick Wakeman, the Blues Brothers and The Exploited, just to name a few, and not including their impressive recording collaborations that are too numerous to mention. Last year they picked up the Best Rock/ Experimental award from The Akademia (USA) and previously won Best International Band at the New York International Music Festival in 2004. The Skys are no strangers to Lancaster, as they have visited the area and performed locally in previous years, but we are excited to have them involved in the Festival this year.

The latest Maze of Sound album, ‘Sunray’, was released in late 2014. It is a nine-track melodious mix of rock, storytelling and thoughtful arrangements. It will take you to a new world where fantasy collides with reality. Since May 2015 the band have had nonexclusive management for recording and promotion, but this year they have also been added to the roster at Six Degrees Entertainment agency Get caught up in their fantasy world and explore their maze of sound and stories.

GlassPop From Poznan, Poland, GlassPop combines rock’n’roll, electronic sounds and a whole ton of energy. For those avid Lancaster Music Festival fans, you may recognise lead vocalist Marcin “Maverick” Kujawa from one of our favourite returning acts last year: UFly. As the founder of this new and fresh set-up, Maverick described GlassPop as the opportunity 17

DIEGO LAVERDE ROJAS - COLUMBIAN HARP

Rory is a one man soul-band and poet! He has a troubadour's talent for weaving magical, musical, storytelling spells. The spoons, harmonica, guitar, trombone and tap dancing shoes accompany the ‘rich, raw, deep and resonant’ voice of this ‘singular and liberating performer’.

From Bogotá, Colombia, Diego has been playing the ‘Llanera’ (lowland) Harp since 1982. This particular harp design is the product of the European influence, and has been adopted in the beautiful area between Colombia and Venezuela called ‘Los Llanos’ (the plains). Diego works as a solo performer as well as a member of many different projects. He is a founder member of Ensamble Criollo, a Folkloric Band featuring as a priority traditional music from the Colombo-Venezuelan plains; its members expand their repertoire to cover music from different Latin American countries.

Rory is a musical Gypsy. His eccentric melodies are infused with influences from Flamenco to blues, through to Celtic, East European and Calypso rhythms creating a style of music and songwriting that has been described as ‘intimate, revealing, political and powerful’. ‘When he sings his songs he will take you on a journey with him’ ‘Poetry and dance-stories with verve, sharpness, humour and warmth about people and for people’ ‘Great songs to dance to, infectious rhythms, flying harmonica!’

RICHARD SADLER - DOUBLE BASS ‘Sadler’s playing is tight, powerful and positive...– he’s an emphatic presence’ – Bruce Lindsay – All About Jazz

See Rory solo at this year’s festival or performing with The Familiar Strangers.

Richard moved to London in 1989, giving himself five years to succeed or fail as a musician. Since then he has played regularly across all genres – jazz, pop, blues, rock & roll - even country! He continues to work as a musician, composer and sound engineer.

‘...when The Familiar Strangers hit their stride their blend of world folk styles is infectious...’ BOB MORGAN - CLARINET, SAXOPHONE Bob has a long collaborative history with Rory from his very earliest recordings, providing arrangements and solos designed to help project the lyrics and recreate the magic of the song in the imagination of the listener.

As a founding member of the Neil Cowley Trio, he performed on their first three albums, touring extensively worldwide with the trio, contributing to the writing and arranging. In 2006, they were presented with a BBC jazz award and even appeared on the iconic 'Later with Jools Holland'.

‘Congratulations to .... the virtuoso clarinettist; this was something that really made you listen’ – The Financial Times

Rory McLeod will be playing solo on the Plinth, Market Square and at The Royal Hotel.

Bob performs in many styles, moving through Reggae, Jazz, Free Improvisation and Blues towards World Music and has toured and recorded in Europe and the US.

He will perform with full band Familiar Strangers at Toll House Inn and on the Melodrome stage, Sun Square.

‘Honks away on sax ..... a master of the art’ – The Guardian 19

As a recent (2015) graduate from Lancaster University, I was delighted to hear that the University of Lancaster Music Society (ULMS) would be taking part in LMF this year. Many of my fondest friendships and memories, however blurred some of them might be, come from ULMS during my time at University! Operating in a university without a current music department, ULMS really does a fantastic job of showcasing many extremely talented musicians across a huge range of instruments, styles & genres. One of the main challenges about university music societies is the ever-changing nature of its students. Just when an ensemble becomes comfortable and you settle into playing together, it’s inevitable that people are going to graduate and move on!

Performing on Dalton Square on Sunday 16th October, we have the ULMS Brass Band who celebrate their 10th Anniversary this year. Whilst they are a competitive brass band – coming 4th in the annual UniBrass national competition in 2014 – they try not to take themselves too seriously, and are fondly remembered at the Whit Friday march contests in 2015 for performing dressed as Zombies! The ULMS Brass Band never cease to entertain, always performing a varied set of “classic” brass band music, mixed in with some more modern, well known tunes and the occasional curve ball. They are hoping for another successful year in 2016-17 under conductor Rob Richardson, and can’t wait to get ‘right stuck into it!’

22

Another one of ULMS’ finest is their Choir. The choir always pull a crowd through their well arranged and rehearsed performances of a wide variety of music. Usually accompanied by a talented pianist, they perform alongside many of the other ULMS ensembles, including the Symphony and String Orchestras, and easily hold their own on the main stage of the annual Campus Fest. It’s always apparent that everyone in the choir is there because they really do love singing together, and this shines through every time they perform. Catch them in lively form at the Judges Lodgings!

and playing for the opening ceremony of the 2016 Rose’s Competition between Lancaster & York. During my final year at university, I had the pleasure of conducting the Big Band (I’m sure they’ll all agree it was a pleasure!) and I’m really looking forward to seeing how they’ve come on since then and watch them jazz things up at Lancaster Castle. Also not to be missed, Specs Appeal - Barbershop harmonising at its best - will be making a welcome appearance at the Robert Gillow. Overall, ULMS promises to be a great addition to the LMF programme in 2016 (not least because they do nothing to dispel the correlation between musicians and beer!)

One of my personal favourites – not that I’m biased as a saxophone player – is the ULMS Big Band. As the only fully auditioning large ensemble at Lancaster University, they pride themselves on consistently holding a very high standard of performance. Throughout the year, the big band get a number of outings such as the annual Big Swing concert, a Christmas gig in Barrow-in-Furness

One of the most popular bands to come out of Lancaster recently, Lake Komo are destined to be one or our festival highlights this year. With a bigger and better, distinctive sound, their layered soundscape hits and soulful vocals are here for one night only. Now based in Manchester, local musicians Jay Nudd (vocals), Liam Maxwell (drums), Jess Gould (keys) and Pete Bentley (bass) are returning to their roots this weekend, where they formed the band over three years ago. Since signing with Colombia Records, they have released a range of tracks with soothing arrangements and thoughtprovoking, emotionally driven lyrics. Their latest big-hit single, Milwaukee, is no exception to this. Despite it being one of the first tracks this four piece has written together, there’s no denying that it is a stunning summer anthem. The Sunday Times Culture called them “thrillingly beautiful”, and Disco Naivete likened their style to being “like all of your favourite acts taking a dip on a hot summer night”. With numerous shows lined up throughout the UK as part of their October Headline tour, we are proud to have Lake Komo returning to Lancaster as one of our headline acts. Make sure you catch their only performance at Lancaster Music Festival this year, on Sunday at 9pm, on the main stage at Lancaster Castle.

What’s the connection between the vibrant rock scene of 70’s Birmingham and award winning Lancaster Music Festival? The answer: MOrganisation. Birmingham based former Electric Light Orchestra guitarist and vocalist, David Scott-Morgan, brings his 5 piece band to Lancaster with an eclectic mix of original songs and ELO classics. You can hear the influences of Buddy Holly, Dylan, the Beatles and (of course) ELO through their repertoire, with the beat provided by a cajon (a snare in a box), presenting an electroacoustic sMOrgasbord of rockpop delight with rich melodies and close harmonies. Dave hit the 'brum-beat' music scene in the 60's with groups such as Magnum and The Ugly's, playing alongside Steve 29

Gibbons, and wrote for The Move and Wishful Thinking. Later his song 'Hiroshima' was a European hit. In the 80's he was part of Electric Light Orchestra's stage line-up and was a studio musician on their album 'Secret Messages' as well as Jeff Lynne's 'Armchair Theatre' album. A collaboration with ELO's keyboard player, Richard Tandy, produced the 'Earth Rise' album and with guitarist Martin Smith he developed a CD compilation 'The BC Collection'. In 2012 he teamed up with Martin Smith again to produce 'Across the Divide'. From house to festival stage, MOrganisation deliver a rich, easy-listening experience that will take you back to the 70's or leave you wishing it could.

the audience during shows making the Melodrome experience one you will never forget. GERRY HADDOCK Your Lancaster Music Festival team are always on the lookout for new ways to make your festival experience that little bit different and this year we’re moving into the visual arts with a Festival Artist. Gerry Haddock first came to our attention when he very kindly offered to donate the proceeds of his exhibition at the Whale Tail Café to the festival. Gerry said at the time “I think the festival is the best thing that happens in this city and I want to promote it”. “We were really knocked out by Gerry’s kind offer” said Festival Coordinator Ben Ruth “It brings home to us how much the residents of Lancaster love the festival weekend and it really makes us proud of what has been achieved”. With his own business in Lancaster, Gerry worked on the Buddhist Temple at Conishead Priory in Ulverston. He has also trained as a Social Worker and worked in Scotland for a number of years. Now settled back in Lancaster, he qualified with a diploma in art and design from Lancaster and Morecambe College. Gerry will be out and about leading a gang of guerrilla sketchers during the festival and we’ll be displaying some of the results of his adventures on our Facebook page. There’ll also be the opportunity to buy some of the work from Gerry so you can have your own little piece of the festival hanging on your wall all year round.
