Let your adventures begin...

An Eden adventure can be as diverse as the Eden landscape. From the rugged peaks to the undulating valley and from high energy activities to more relaxing pastimes. The characteristics of the land define Eden’s three distinct regions; the mountains and lakes of Ullswater, rolling countryside of the Eden Valley and the moorlands of Alston & the North Pennines. The three areas connect seamlessly to create breathtaking scenery and rich heritage for you to explore and enjoy.

Eden’s Area Information ALSTON & THE NORTH PENNINES

The North Pennines designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty has a reputation as the most peaceful and unspoilt area in England. The historic market town of Alston is one of the main hubs in the North Pennines. Walking through the cobbled streets, the heritage is apparent with the South Tynedale Railway and some of the delightful old buildings all providing a taste of the past. Today, arts and crafts provide a colourful contrast to its industrial heritage with many shops and galleries offering unique pieces.

ULLSWATER

The Ullswater area lies within the Lake District National Park and provides a popular area for outdoor activities. Lakeland villages and lofty peaks provide a variety of possibilities to lure and inspire. The unrivalled beauty of Lake Ullswater has provided a scenic backdrop for centuries from William Wordsworth’s ‘Daffodils’ to the enchanting tale of ‘Miss Potter’. The new 20 mile Ullswater Way is a complete, fully signed, round the lake footpath, which can be enjoyed in shorter stretches in combination with a trip on the Ullswater steamers or perhaps as a long distance route.

THE EDEN VALLEY

The River Eden flows through the heart of the region and shapes the countryside to form the enchanting Eden Valley. Three thriving market towns; Penrith, Kirkby Stephen and Appleby provide a range of unique experiences that can only be found in Eden. Explore Neolithic and Bronze Age heritage at the Penrith and Eden Museum, learn about the history of the horse fair in Appleby, or enjoy an afternoon’s trout fishing on the River Eden.

Be inspired as you walk 6

Journey into Eden’s past

From mysterious Neolithic sites to imaginative modern sculptures, Eden has it all. A mix of vibrant towns and stirring landscapes to ignite the spark of inspiration. A range of artists, sculptors, poets and writers have all been invigorated by Eden. William Wordsworth’s poem “Airey-Force Valley” and W H Auden’s “Alston Moor” both celebrate Eden’s unique landscape. The magnificent limestone pavement at Orton Scar affords stunning views over the Eden Valley across to the serene beauty of Ullswater. For an historical adventure explore the ancient stone circle of Long Meg and her Daughters, the fascinating Lacy’s Caves on the banks of the River Eden, or Shap Abbey.

Follow us on Twitter @VisitEden Join us on Facebook ‘Visit Eden’

Modern art has also made its mark. The Eden Benchmarks, great carved stone sculptures were inspired by the local landscape and are located along the River Eden. Try visiting all

ten sculptures, following the path of the river, or go on the hunt for Andy Goldsworthy’s sheepfolds. Be inspired as you walk along Kirkby Stephen’s Poetry Path or for something a little more challenging, the Pennine Way which runs through Alston and Garrigill. Travel back in time to unravel the mysteries behind Eden’s earliest remaining castles and churches. Explore the myths surrounding the tenth century Loki stone depicting the Norse God of mischief Loki in Kirkby Stephen Parish Church, or the Arthurian legends at Pendragon Castle. Images: Shap Abbey (left); Nine Standards Rigg, Kirkby Stephen (right)

7

With huge areas of rural tranquillity, Eden is the perfect place to relax and get away from it all. You can meander along country lanes, through the peaceful valleys and the tranquil villages of this quieter part of Cumbria. Images: Lowther Castle and the Pennines (this page); Dalemain Mansion and Historic Gardens (right)

8

www.visiteden.co.uk

Sit back and enjoy the beautiful countryside from the carriage of a restored train, on either the South Tynedale Railway at Alston, or the Eden Valley Railway at Warcop; or take in the breathtaking mountain views aboard a “Steamer” on Ullswater lake. Alternatively, take a leisurely stroll around the relaxing gardens at Hutton-in-the-Forest, Acorn Bank, Dalemain, Askham Hall gardens or Lowther Castle & Gardens. Treat yourself to something unusual for your own garden at Larch Cottage Nurseries or The Pot Place whilst enjoying the interesting displays. Most have tea rooms for a welcome break while you watch the world go by! A spot of fishing for trout on the River Eden may well be your way of getting away from it all; or a round of golf at one of the golf courses set in idyllic countryside settings. As well as appreciating the natural beauty of the outdoors, there are many ways to wind down indoors. Art lovers will want to visit Beckstones Art Gallery and Upfront Gallery, both set in lovely rural locations in the peaceful Eden countryside. From the highest peaks to the lowest valleys, Eden is the ideal setting for your action-packed, adrenaline-fuelled adventures... Eden is the ideal location for a whole host of amazing outdoor adventures, including walking, mountain biking, skiing and rock climbing.

Kirkby Stephen and Alston are ideal bases from which to enjoy walks and both have recently achieved ‘Walkers are Welcome’ status.

Eden provides a wide range of physical activities in some of the most breathtaking locations: paragliding over Mallerstang, sailing on Ullswater, or hiking in the Howgills near Kirkby Stephen, a ‘Walkers are Welcome’ town.

Experience Eden from horseback with riding centres catering for riders of all abilities, or for those who like doing things a little bit differently, llama trekking near Penrith!

It is also a paradise for cyclists with miles of peaceful country lanes, or rocky terrain for mountain biking enthusiasts, plus cycle routes including the coast to coast and Walney to Wear. The Lakes and Dales Loops gives cyclists the opportunity to get up close to Cumbria’s spectacular landscape as it passes through the Eden valley.

10

Country fairs, sporting events and music festivals all provide a different type of adventure. Lowther Park hosts the annual Kendal Calling music festival that features a wide selection of rock and pop artists. There are traditional agricultural shows in Appleby, Penrith and Skelton as well as the ancient Rushbearing Festivals in Musgrave and Warcop.

EAT, DRINK & DISCOVER from bakeries to breweries, sample Eden’s local produce The wide range of specialist shops, places to eat, bustling markets and award-winning food and drink outlets make Eden an unmissable culinary adventure. Unwind in one of the cafés, tea rooms or farm shops. Why not sample the menus of the numerous awardwinning restaurants, pubs and cafés? From the George and Dragon, Clifton to the Watermill in Little Salkeld, Eden has a huge variety of places to satisfy the palate. Eden is full of small independent producers of tasty local food, more and more of whom use regionally sourced ingredients.

Markets in Penrith, Brough and Orton offer a tempting selection of local food and drink, sold by the farmers and producers themselves, ensuring maximum quality and freshness. Cranston’s Meat Pies, Kennedys Chocolates, and ales from Eden Brewery are just a selection of the awardwinning delights that Eden has to offer. Local treats include Abbott Lodge Penrith Jersey Ice Cream, and Penrith Toffee and Fudge or, for something a little stronger then, High Cup Wines have their own vineyard and winery to compliment the local cheeses produced at the Appleby Creamery. Sample some of the finest marmalade at Dalemains Marmalade Festival in March. The Appleby Brewery at Morland now offers visitor tours and is one of Cumbria’s newest micro breweries. Take a piece of Eden home G

alleries and craft shops, farmer’s markets and local produce, specialist shops and cafés all add to the varied and individual shopping experience in Eden. The market town of Penrith was traditionally where farmers brought their produce for sale by horse and cart. The need for stabling explains the many interesting alleyways which led from the front door of inns to the stables behind. Today contemporary shopping arcades sit alongside traditional retail. Alston is one of the highest market towns in England and offers many truly local shops up and down its cobbled streets. Shopping for antiques is a must in Kirkby Stephen and the backdrop of the River Eden in Appleby makes shopping for gifts and local produce a delight. Why not treat yourself or take home as a gift a selection of Kennedys fine chocolate, a hamper of local produce from Cranstons Food Hall or a special bottle from the High Cup Winery. Your Accommodation Inspections Some properties are self-assessed rather than been part of a recognised national scheme by either the AA, VisitEngland or under the Quality Cumbria scheme.

Awaiting Inspection In some cases properties may have recently applied for a rating and are awaiting assessment. Please be aware that ratings may change throughout the year and can be checked on our website. Quality Cumbria Quality Cumbria is a local assessment initiative in partnership with Visit England. Although not star rated it is accredited to ensure that accommodation meets National Quality Assurance Standards and should be clean, pleasant, comfortable and fit for purpose. For more information please call 01539 825011

30

National Inspection (Star Ratings) The star ratings of the AA and VisitEngland National Quality Assurance Standards give a clear guide to what you can expect. Properties are visited annually by trained, impartial assessors so you can have confidence that your accommodation has been thoroughly checked and rated for quality before you make a booking. AA Tel: 01256 844455 VB Tel: 0845 3006996 Hotels are given a rating from one to five stars, the more stars, the greater the range of facilities and level of services provided. Country House Hotel and Small Hotel are also included under this designation. Guest Accommodation includes Bed and Breakfasts, Guest Houses, Farmhouses, Restaurants with Rooms and Inns. Guest accommodation properties are likely to be smaller than hotels with perhaps more of a family home feel and approach and a less structured service. The ratings indicate progressively higher levels of quality and customer care.

Self Catering properties are assessed using stars. The more stars (from one to five) the higher the levels of quality you can expect. Holiday Parks, Touring and Camping Parks are assessed using stars or pennants. The rating reflects the overall quality of the park with progressively higher standards of quality up to five star/pennant Alternative Accommodation Includes unusual self-catering accommodation such as wigwams, camping pods, camper vans, yurts and Romany caravans Accommodation Quality Charter Some properties are self-assessed rather than being part of a recognised national scheme. They have signed an Accommodation Quality Charter so that Eden Tourism, Cumbria Tourism & other tourism organisations can continue to make a quality commitment to visitors and be reassured that we are promoting the very best about our wonderful area.

Eden is a beautiful corner of Cumbria in the north of England, taking in the lakes and mountains around Ullswater, part of the Lake District National Park and the moorlands of the North Pennines around Alston, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. In between, the River Eden flows through the rolling countryside of the Eden Valley.
