Thanks to our Sponsors! There are significant costs involved with putting on an event of this size. We’ve made a conscious decision not to rely on public grants which may or may not be available to us in future years so we are very grateful for the generosity of the following main sponsors without whose kind assistance you’d all be looking at an empty stage. In fact there wouldn’t be any stages.

Returning NTERNATIONAL ACTS
O
ur international artists left quite an impression last year, and we are delighted to welcome back two acts. You have begged and pleaded for their return and we are happy to deliver. After a fantastic set of performances at Lancaster Music Festival last year, we had to invite UFly back for more. Won over by the festival atmosphere, the people and the wonderful hospitality, they just couldn’t say no. Since their last visit, they have performed at festivals in Poland and Holland and supported the popular Dutch indie-rock band, Kensington. Their latest album, “Love Smugglers”, has attracted widespread attention in both Poland and further afield. Bringing back their electro-grooves and distinctive guitar riffs, this powerful Polish trio are armed with addictive energy and now merchandise. Performing on the main stage at the castle this year for the first time, they are excited to play brand new songs from their upcoming album due to be released in February 2016. They are even more delighted that these tracks will be debuted inside historic walls that have stood for almost 1,000 years.
Witness history being made and catch their engaging performances at a number of other venues throughout the city. This act is not to be missed. Our top pick from 2014, Sensory Hoverload, is also returning, flooded with compliments from their performances last year. We can’t wait to see what they have in store this time around. From some jaw-dropping pub shows to the surreal experience of playing inside the castle walls, their funky riffs, addictive energy and passionate rock numbers still resonate within the city. Whether you’re already a fan of theirs, or you’re yet to be introduced to this talented bunch from New Jersey, they have something new in store for everyone. With plans to debut their new EP in Lancaster, they are guaranteed to stuff your senses with funky raw delights. They are eager to catch up with old friends and connect with new audiences before they head over to Dublin, Amsterdam and other parts of Europe. Step into the party atmosphere! With this lively three piece there is never a dull moment. They will feed off your energy and blow your mind.

INTRODUCING
THE ARTISTS
Lancaster Music Festival is delighted, once again, to feature a number of acts from overseas to play alongside our huge range of local and national performers. After receiving a lot of interest from musicians worldwide, this year’s hand-picked selection of acts spans seven countries. From Armenia to Australia, the UK to the US, they have all travelled here, bursting with excitement to perform their unique and original material to Lancaster audiences. Read on for more information about our international acts and some of our featured UK-based bands that will be performing at Lancaster Music Festival 2015.
14
Adam Miller Genre: Guitar Virtuoso From: Newcastle, Australia No vocals, no set list, no gimmicks. This one-man show will simply have you mesmerised. Guitar virtuoso Miller has a true love of instrumental music with the ability to intertwine bass lines, chords, percussion and lead lines on his guitar, transforming one instrument into many. Named the Australian Fingerstyle Champion in 2002, Miller has travelled the world showcasing his incredible technique and versatility as a solo performer. Delivering a mix of blues, folk, jazz and pop, he lets his guitar speak for itself. The articulate acoustic melodies and percussive rhythms tell stories of their own without the need for words. His tours range from international guitar and blues festivals in Australia to Montreal Jazz Festival. Miller makes regular appearances at music trade events in the U.S. and Germany, where he performs for some of the world’s most respected guitar companies and creators. He travelled to Afghanistan twice to perform for the Australian and Allied Forces. Recognition of his musical talents does not stop there. Australia Guitar Magazine featured him as one of their top 25 future legends and, in 2010, U.S. Magazine Guitar International dubbed him "Guitarist Deserving Wider Recognition”. Never performing the same show twice, Miller responds to each audience differently, allowing them to dictate the way his show will unfold. This solo act is sure to get your body moving to his rhythmic delights and strong grooves. Of course, there will be an Australian accent thrown in for good measure.
CARTOON FOOD Genre: Indie Pop From: Fleetwood Exuberant, eclectic and engaging this fourpiece from Fleetwood will have you hooked on their catchy originals. Performing together for the past three years, they have been well received at festivals and venues up and down the country. Their own songs about love, life and mortality are enriched by original melodies and three-part harmonies. The band features Ian Wright, Jez Jackson, Shaun Elliott and Mike Bailey. Together, they play a more traditional combination of vocals, guitars, bass and percussion, but can’t resist throwing the odd woodwind, melodica, cajon and mandolin into the mix. They have performed at Fylde Folk Festival, music festivals in Langdale, Worcester and St. Annes and of course a few beer festivals too. Cartoon Food have supported Jazz Morley on her 2014 national tour and prior to that Rita Hosking and Sean Feder from the U.S. Most recently the band have accompanied Ferocious Dog, a modern folk band from Nottingham, on part of their 2015 national tour. They released their debut EP, ‘Elbow Room Only’ in 2013. Since then they have released a second EP earlier this year. Recorded at West Orange Studios in Preston, ‘Dark Side of the Spoon’ features not only an eclectic mix of music, but also an interesting EP cover, depicting the band members as hard boiled eggs, and an alternate version with a crumpet for a moon. Believe it or not, their material is not all breakfast themed, but they have a tight-knit style of their own that does have to be seen to be believed. 15
GET CARTER & THE CONVULSIONS Genre: Mod-grooves meets punk-funk boogaloo
From: Lancaster
Unleash your inner funk demon, experience mod madness and give in to musical mayhem. Friday night on the main stage at Lancaster Castle will be your one and only chance to witness the face-off between two of the funkiest Lancaster-based acts. Founded back in Chicago by Festival Coordinator, Ben Ruth, The Convulsions have existed in various formats. Involving a variety of musicians, numerous international tours and countless venues nationwide they have been blasting modpunk boogaloo to Lancaster audiences for the past decade. Their fan base stretches from Lancaster to Lithuania, from Chicago to Costa Rica. Over the past year, the finely-tuned, rockin’ three-piece has thrown a couple of horn players into the mix, adding to their ostentatious stage antics and booty-shaking mayhem. Local legends Get Carter have been delivering hypnotic grooves and wild Hammond organ stylings for over 10 years. They cut out song introductions and interfering chit-chat to get to the nitty gritty of connecting with the audience through their purely instrumental mod delights. Known for their thumping melodies and left-hand bass lines, accented with off-beat ‘stabs’ and percussive accompaniment, they generate huge sound. With only two members, Hammond organ master James Mackie, who has previously played for Madness and Selector, and John Elles on drums you have to see this act to believe they are just a duo. These two acts have joined forces to bring you an unforgettable performance in the lead up to the creation of a joint album. Exhilarating mod-jazz meets punk and RnB. Witness these two bands uniting on stage, armed with pockets full of harmonicas, a Hammond XK3, additional percussion, wireless microphones and possibly a Theremin. You have been warned.
LILIT BLEYAN Genre: Armenian Pop
From: Yerevan, Armenia
Warm, acoustic melodies will take you through a mix of danceable styles, multiple languages and spirited performances. Lilit Bleyan and her band throw artificial flavourings out of the window to bring you pure, natural sounds and delicate arrangements. Fresh from recording her new album in Brussels, her appearance here at Lancaster Music Festival could not have been timed better. This band have worked all year on producing new musical stylings that consist of predominantly English lyrics which Lancaster audiences will be the first to hear. Bleyan’s previous two CDs have been made up of Armenian and Spanish compositions, the first of which, “Waiting Trains,” was a single released in 2010. The immediate success of the Armenian track led to the creation of her first album a year later. Bleyan, a successful TV journalist working as the youthful face of an independent Yerevan TV channel, A1plus, soon opted for a career change to pursue her passion for music. The regular band of five will be streamlined to a trio for their performances at the festival, comprising vocals, guitar and cello. The majority of their latest songs have been arranged by guitarist Tigran Ter Stepanian, who has been collaborating with Bleyan for the past three years and is known for his involvement in creating stunning Armenian folk compositions with his band, ARAX. Bleyan’s first performances in a British city will be intimate, memorable experiences where you can fully connect with this brand new material. The mix of Latin rhythms and Spanish tempo will present everything from bossa novas to tango arrangements. You will be hooked on this Armenian pop trio. 16
LOL GOODMAN BAND Genre: Blues
From: Manchester
Since 2014, the Lol Goodman Band have been expanding their fan base beyond North West pubs and clubs by appearing at a number of blues-oriented venues and festivals. This year’s performances include Middleton Rock ‘n’ Blues Festival, Upton Blues Festival, Stafford Blues and headlining the British stage at Colne Great British R&B Festival. Proving that blues can evolve and transform into a niche style, the Lol Goodman Band have crafted their own repertoire of original, gritty blues material that will take you right back to Mississippi. Throughout the past twenty years this band has existed in various formats and has featured a variety of musicians. Over the past four years they have formed a regular four-piece gigging band, made up of Lol Goodman on guitar and vocals, James Horrocks on bass, drummer Jon Firth and Phil Barrett on keyboards and guitar. Their rhythmic powerhouse and inspired guitar melodies are deeply rooted in rock and blues influences. Inspired by Delta blues legends, like Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and Memphis Slim. Goodman is the mastermind behind the arrangements and prolific song writing. Their first 12-track album, “Old Dog ‘n’ Licks”, released in 2013, was commended by both national and international blues magazines. The next release, “Tautology,” soon followed, with glowing reviews in Blues in Britain magazine and a prominent band feature on Nick Dow’s long running blues show on BBC Radio Lancashire. Whether you want to transport yourself to the Mississippi Delta, relive the British blues boom or simply have your socks knocked off by a set of blues-rock originals, the Lol Goodman Band is certainly for you. 17
OP SA! BALKAN BAND Genre: Balkan/Gypsy/Jazz
From: London
This fiery travelling party of 12 is big, bold and brass-heavy. You will be mesmerised, compelled to dance and unable to drag yourself away from this lively gypsy party. Bringing their own passionate brand of Balkan music, influenced by the roots of the Serbian Kolo and the Turkish ÄŒoÄ?ek, their repertoire is an addictive blend of wild beats, gypsy flair and modern sound. Op Sa! have supported top bands such as Serbian Romani band KAL and The Turbans, an international musical collective focusing on near-eastern and eastern-European styles and traditions. They have also worked alongside producers Gypsy Hill and performed at prestigious venues such as the Royal Festival Hall alongside the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Lancaster can look forward to music from Serbia, Macedonia, Bosnia and the Romani culture with a growing number of original arrangements. The band's sets are dynamic and ooze passion for what they do. Teaming a traditional brass section with clarinets, saxophone, electric guitars, darabouka and a drum kit, they give a contemporary twist to deep-rooted cultural influences and create an unmistakeably rich sound. These Balkan beats with energetic uplift are guaranteed to get you dancing. Be sure to catch this sensational band, where each performance is a party to enjoy and a pleasure to witness.

BOB Ardern Genre: Contemporary Instrumental Folk
From: Nova Scotia, Canada
This acoustic guitarist will whisk you away with his captivating sound and masterful finger-style playing. Keen to connect with his audiences, Ardern provides the opportunity to discover the stories behind his instrumental masterpieces. He will also be performing some numbers as a duo with Lancaster finger-style guitarist and friend, Duncan Woodcock. Since meeting in the 70s, their musical compatibility has led to co-writing songs and a number of performances on stage together. With their unique twist on folk and Canadian/American roots music, his acoustic sets convey as much narrative and emotion as the Celtic, classical and jazz influences that have inspired them. Video calling between continents has enabled them to continue collaborating their ideas throughout the years, leading to reunion in Lancaster and a chance for you to hear their brand new material. Lancaster Music Festival hosts the first official release of Ardern’s new CD Eight Winds. Three of the tracks feature the duo and can be heard live along with new solo tracks from Ardern. His previous album releases have received outstanding reviews and ranked highly in the Zone Music Reporter charts. At this, his first major festival in the UK, Ardern is looking forward to sharing his music with new audiences beyond the U.S and Canada and experiencing everything the festival has to offer. On his tour he will include a few more locations in Derbyshire and Cheshire. This Nova Scotian new age blues act will immerse you in finger-style guitar talent and charm you with the stories that inspired it.
THE LANDED Genre: Pop
From: Colchester
Air-punching guitar pop accompanied by some good, old fashioned musicianship. These guys combine all the best musical ingredients, motivated by the bands they have grown up listening to. Inspired by that 70s new wave edge introduced by The Police, Fleetwood Mac’s harmonic choruses and sense of melody and topped off with a taste of ELO’s symphonic rock vibe, The Landed have formed a distinctive style of their own. Brothers Paul and David Hale have been the backbone of a number of bands. Teaming up on guitar and drums, they were invading pub circuits as young teenagers. With the addition of friends Dan Currie and Paul Jannece in the last few years, this band have become a force to be reckoned with. Determined to focus on writing and recording their own material, they’ve now stepped up from their days of record swapping and rolling out covers. Recently signed to the largest independent record label in the U.S, Spectra Music Group, they are due to release a new EP in January. This will accompany their 2014 debut EP and their latest single, “She”. Destined to strike a chord with audiences, they will be performing songs based around friendship, family and a different spin on love. Last year, starting in Southampton and working their way up to Glasgow, they successfully completed a University tour consisting of 25 performances. They have also played with the likes of Clean Bandit and Foxes at various festivals around the country and attracted the attention of 6 Music and Radio 1. They put their hard-hitting pop style down to growing up listening to and loving all the right records. Whether or not that is a love you can relate to, you will certainly appreciate the style, technique and stage presence showcased by their live performances. 19
THE FEUD Genre: Electro Rock
From: Lancaster
This raw, talented trio have developed a unique style that is sheer head-banging brilliance. Their punchy lyrics and raucous riffs will take centre-stage for one of the main headline slots at the castle. Driven by thumping electronic samples and banging beats, their performances at Lancaster Music Festival in previous years certainly haven’t gone unnoticed. Inspired musical range, too vast and varied to pin down, has morphed into their own brand of “organic dance rock,” which has been praised repeatedly by Radio 1 and a number of music magazines including Kerrang! After performing in Manchester over five years ago, they were quick to release their debut single. “In Between the Lines” received much critical acclaim and attracted fans from around the UK and Europe. This was shortly followed by their first tour, which the trio themselves funded, organised and delivered throughout Europe. The tour concluded with their playing alongside acts such as The Prodigy, Editors, The Subways and Muse, whilst opening the Czech Republic’s biggest festival, Rock for People. Eager to deliver a monstrous amount of live energy to dedicated fans and fresh audiences alike, the band have expanded their repertoire over the years and continued to add to their list of international performances. After collaboration work from Tim “The Terror” Anderson in Los Angeles, their debut album is just about ready to go. In the meantime one of their songs, “Rise,” has hit the big screen and is featured in the recently released film, Vacation. It is clear that this band is destined for big things. With their lively sets, loveable personalities and dirty electro mixes, The Feud are in demand and guaranteed to drive the crowds wild. 20

THE
BRAZILIAN CONNECTION T
his year we are proud to present three diverse acts from Brazil. Given such a variety of musical genres and performance styles you will experience sides of Brazil you didn’t even know existed. From delicate, acoustic arrangements to performances that you will not be able to take your eyes off, this stunning array of language and talent can be spotted in Lancaster venues throughout the entire festival. Witness whimsical rock performances from the Brazilian State of Paraná to eclectic, electro-jazz from Rio de Janeiro. Nestled between the two, from Sao Paulo, is one of our most flamboyant performers, Rafe Musicircus. Merging his love of music and circus performance, this variety act has showcased his oneman show around the world. You will find comedic deliverance of dance, mime, juggling and of course live music at the Judges Lodgings on Sunday.

CLARA VALENTE Genre: From:
Brazilian Jazz Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Clara's delicately versatile voice combines Brazilian standards with eclectic rhythms and electronica to deliver a tantalising mesh of vibrant styles. This is her first international festival and is just one stop on a tour spanning Europe including Prague, Vienna and the WOMEX music fair in Budapest. Aside from her stunning vocals and keyboard melodies, she will also be accompanied by her music director Mauricio Pacheco on guitar and vocals and Gui Gautreaux on electronic drums and samples. Clara’s 2010 EP put her on the map, allowing her to be recognised and unleashed as a new talent in Brazilian music. Her debut album “Mil Coisas” was released in early 2014. It integrates influences from around the world with the female element of how women view the world. Her album has won Best Album of the Year awards and was declared one of the top three albums of the year by influential Brazilian site, UOL Música. Clara’s fan base soon spread outside Brazil, with three of the tracks reaching the iTunes top 10 in Honduras. This has led her to embark on tours of South America and the U.S. over the past year where, alongside her band, she has conveyed traditional influences from her native region with lyrics in both Portuguese and English, with, of course, her own twist. This act will have you upbeat and energised with afro-beats, tango rhythms and electronic textures. The beautiful melodies showcase a spectrum of emotions and exude personality and charm.
Estrela Leminski & Teo Ruiz Genre: Brazilian pop From: Curitiba, Brazil Come and explore a different side to Brazil. Estrela Leminski and Téo Ruiz have been performing and creating music together for almost 15 years. From a part of Brazil where hot weather, sambas and full-blown carnivals are hard to come by, but an eclectic mix of musical styles is growing, they have become two vital names in Brazilian Popular Music. Their poetic rock performances are sure to convince you that music is a universal language. They aim to create magical performances to new audiences who may not know Portuguese or the Brazilian pop genre. To allow you to better understand and connect with their performance, they have translated some of their lyrics to cater for a UK audience. Despite leaving their technicians and some musicians behind they will perform at Lancaster Music Festival with a fully-fledged rock band. This will be their first time playing in the UK and their first visit to Lancaster. “Enchanted” by the evidence of last year’s festival atmosphere and the allure of playing in an historic city with a castle, their love of culture, and our love of their musical stylings, has brought them here. This act has toured in the U.S., including playing in New York and at the SXSW festival in Austin. Their last album São Sons, released in 2011, has had widespread success, both in Brazil and internationally. Leminski and Ruiz have been known to integrate multimedia components into their show as a way of bringing the audience closer to the performance and to the message their music conveys. This Brazilian pop duo and their band will draw you in with their energy, poetic lyrics and rocky arrangements. 45
