Fonthill Woodlands Project

4

One of the best things about owning your own business is the opportunity to be involved outside the business. Thank you Geoff, Darryl, Patti and the entire BCG team for allowing me the freedom to do just that. The Bucks County Historical Society – a private non-profit organization that operates the Mercer Museum and Fonthill Castle – is one of the places I get to spend time.

Many of you are familiar with the Fonthill Castle located in Doylestown and have toured the unique historic home of Henry Mercer. I suspect however, few know much about the entire property that Henry designed to be a community park and arboretum. Unfortunately, years of minimal maintenance have left the 67-acre property in less than optimum condition, but that is about to change in a big way. Area arborists, neighbors and local organizations have planned a community work day this Earth Day – Sunday, April 22 – kicking off a multiyear project to enhance the property’s historical, ecological, recreational and cultural benefits. Henry Mercer did so much to define our town and left us with a legacy unlike any other. It’s time for us to show our appreciation. I’ll be there, why not join me? Made in the Shade

with Walpole Outdoors®

In Your Own

Many of us have patios or other outdoor living spaces that are on the south facing side of our home – out in the open, totally exposed. Anyone who has this set up will tell you that it leaves the space uncomfortably hot in the summer to the point of possibly being unusable during a good part of the day. Trees and structures provide much needed reprieve, turning these sweltering spots into shady nooks, and the place to be. After home renovations were completed, this Main Line client was faced with this same set up. To help remedy the situation, a custom designed Walpole Outdoors® pergola, constructed of low-maintenance Azek vinyl, beautifully integrated with an over-the-door trellis. For added coverage, a Shade FX canopy in Navy was employed, contrasting perfectly with the lighter colors of the house and pergola, as well as the red of the paver patio. Visit buckscountrygardens.com to learn more about Walpole Outdoors!

Designing for the Ultimate Staycation Traveling creates wonderful memories and experiences but over time, can be costly. These days, many clients are creating a home oasis for the ultimate staycation, and it’s a great idea. Imagine a few days off at home with no driving, no jetlag…just relaxation. This was the goal of our client in Newtown. The light tan and cream pallette from their existing travertine patio made the perfect back drop for the vivid colors of purple salvia, yellow black-eyed susans and cool summer white hydrangeas. Lush, flowing grasses were used to create the look of a beachside resort. Backing to the open field and woods, the plantings around the far side of the pool were kept light. Lots of textural plantings were added to the area around the pool, patio, and house to soften the look of the hardscaping materials. Last, growing edibles was of great importance to the family, so an area complete with cedar boxes, fruit trees and shrubs, and a strawberry patch was integrated into their home oasis. Rethinking your next staycation? Speak with one of our designers to discuss the possibilities!

Onions bulbs are part of the allium family and are a good source of vitamin C and fiber. They, too, are a cool season crop and can be planted after the soil has dried and warmed a bit. Using onion sets (tiny bulbs), plant with ends pointed up and cover with about 2” of soil and space about 3”–4” apart. So let’s get planting!
