FREE TREE PLANTING SALE! Yes, it’s back. But only until April 24. And yes, Cherry Trees are included. George Washington would be happy.

Bernie Sanders! Donald Trump! Last night they were the huge winners. By the time you read this they could be yesterday’s news and it’s all Hillary and Ted…or maybe not. Not sure it actually matters but it sure has made presidential politics interesting this year. So how do we compete? What’s interesting at Bucks Country Gardens? Just like the Republican field of candidates in January…there’s lots! OUR TEAM! Ryan, Russ, Kirsten, Tiffany and Cole are gone. We sure do miss them but wish them well in their new careers. Chad, Jeff, Jessie, Dustin, Jody, Alexis, Amy and Ben are back for year number two. More additions and important announcements are coming soon. Sorry, no Donald’s, Bernie’s or Marco’s here. BERLIN GARDENS! That’s Berlin, Ohio, not Berlin, Germany. And it’s patio furniture, not plants. For years, we’ve been looking for the right PVC furniture and not just a row of multicolored adirondaks to line our retention basin. Berlin Gardens manufactures the best looking, longest lasting, style sensitive, superior value, wood-look PVC furniture available anywhere. If you don’t believe me, just ask John Kasich (if he’s still in the running). ROOT CANDLES! An American tradition since 1869! It is highly regarded for complex bouquets of

Hillary approves.

Dazzling Dahlias

p icture p e r f e c t p e re n ni a l s do pair best with other large perennials. Be sure to stake the plants to prevent them from falling over. Stake when first planting the tuber so you do not damage it when the dahlia comes into bloom.

Dahlias are the ultimate example of captivating living art. Mother nature paints their petals with deep blues and purples and vibrant pinks and oranges. Each petal is unique in its own rightful form. Some are speckled with color, some are inversely stripped, while others have dark edges that fade to light or exude a monotone ombre effect. As one of the most stunning garden flowers, Dahlias begin to bloom during mid to late summer months which is perfect timing as spring blooming flowers begin to fade and fall bloomers are not quite in season. Dahlias are tubers, not bulbs. While tubers are very similar to bulbs in that both are underground storage units for the plants, their profile is what really sets them apart. Dahlia tubers are not uniform in shape; they will alter and be oblong in appearance. Plant these beauties in full sun environments and watch them thrive! Dinner Plate Dahlias are named for their exceptionally large blooms. This double-flower variety can grow to 8” in diameter and 3’–4’ tall. When using Dinner Plate Dahlias in mass plantings, use them as a back border to keep them from overwhelming your other flowers. They

Decorative Dahlias are the widest blooming variety, ranging from short and small flowered to tall and large flowered. They come in an assortment of colors including solid, variegated, stripped, or a combination of all three. Medium dahlias, 1’–2’ plants, look great as a front border to a garden bed, along with other lateblooming perennials. Border dahlias such as these are also bountiful in containers. Pair multiple varieties together in the same container for a visually engaging look. The compact size of the smaller varieties of decorative dahlias, 10”–12” in height, work well in window boxes, too! Cactus Dahlias get their name from the cactuslike blooms that are often brightly colored with rolled and pointed petals. Like many other varieties of dahlias, Cactus Dahlias come in a mixture of sizes and colors. When growing this variety, as well as others, it is important to make sure to use good-quality soil and provide plenty of access to sunshine. These perennials need at least six to eight

hours of sun daily. Dahlias also have very weak stems that are subject to damage during windy weather. Be ready to stake them to keep them protected. Dahlias require very little care during the summer and fall. A monthly feeding of a water-soluble, organic fertilizer, along with regular watering is all it takes. You may want to avoid using a fertilizer that is high in nitrogen, as it will give you a lot of green foliage with little flowering. Mulching around the plants will help prevent weed growth and retain moisture. Removal of old blossoms will encourage branching and new flower production. Though they have a relatively short vase life, dahlias make great cut flower arrangements. Overwintering dahlias is a bit more labor-intensive process, but it is certainly worth the additional care. After the first winter frost, when the foliaged has blackened, cut off all but 2”–4” of top growth and carefully dig out the tubers. Allow the tubers to dry for a few days in a location that is out of direct sunlight and frost-free. Once they have dried completely, remove all but 1”–2” of the remaining foliage and stem. Store tubers in a ventilated box filled with lightly moistened sand, peat moss, or vermiculite, and that is between 45º and 55º. The tubers are very fragile, so periodically check them for rotting and drying out. Remove dead or damaged tubers to keep from spreading. Dahlias are a dazzling flower whose large size, exceptional color, and wide array of uses make them the perfect perennial for all types of gardeners and gardens. And a little work in the early winter months will provide you with year after year enjoyment with this amazing species of flower. Enjoy!

ROOT CANDLES Bucks Country Gardens is happy to bring in Root Candles for your shopping pleasure. The original A.I. Root Co. was started in 1869 as a honey manufacturer and supplier to the beekeeping industry. It wasn’t until the 1920’s that the candle business manifested. A local priest asked Amos Ives Root if he could supply beeswax candles that would not melt in the heat of the summer in a sweltering church. A.I. Root’s son Huber developed these candles using hand rolled strips of beeswax from the hives wrapped around a wick. They held up to the hottest of summer days, while burning cleaner and longer. Root candles have been a leading supplier of liturgical candles ever since their start. Now in its fifth generation, the Root family continues the virtues of honesty, integrity, and diligent craftsmanship. Today, Root Candles can confidently lay claim to making the highest quality jar and pillar candles in America.

CHART METALWORKS Chart Metalworks is the creation of a long time sailor with a nautical Maine background. One day in 2006, surrounded by scrolls of nautical charts, Charlotte Guptill was inspired to create them into her own jewelry designs. In 2008, Chart Metalworks was officially launched. Her husband soon joined her in their studio in Maine. They now have a talented team of Maine-based artisans and an expansive collection that includes maps and territories beyond the US. This is the first year that Chart Metalworks will be in our Boutique, and we are so excited about it! Our line features exclusive pieces depicting maps of Doylestown, Bucks County and the surrounding areas in bracelets, necklaces, key chains, and charms. And, of course, they’re all made in the USA!

SPARTINA 449 Spartina 449 began in 2009 in a seaside cottage nestled in the small island of Daufuskie, South Carolina. Inspired by the island’s character and natural beauty, the company founder and CEO, Kay Stanley, imagined how linen and leather could marry with colorful patterns. That thought became a beautifully coordinated handbag collection loved by women everywhere. Today, Spartina 449 is internationally known and featured in specialty retail stores like Bucks Country Gardens, and offers an array of products that continue to be inspired by the lush history of Daufuskie Island. In order to keep that history alive, Spartina 449 donates a portion of it’s proceeds to the Daufuskie Island Historical Foundation.

S’WELL In 2010, S’well was launched with a mission to rid the world of plastic bottles. In the United States alone, an estimated 50 billion plastic bottles are dumped in landfills each year, and 200 billion globally. S’well’s bottle was thoughtfully crafted out of nonleaching and non-toxic 18/8 stainless steel and designed to keep drinks cold for 24 hours and hot for 12, while also giving back to those in need. Swell is a proud supporter of UNICEF, having already donated $100,000 to help provide clean water to the world’s most vulnerable children. We, at Bucks Country Gardens, have fallen in love with the style, function, and mission of S’well, the premier fashionable and reusable water bottle. As you shop these products, you are buying more than just a piece of jewelry, a handbag, a candle or a water bottle. You are buying a small piece of a much larger puzzle of company history.

Curriculum meets all national, state and local curriculum requirements. Open to all families who live or work in the community.

Haring Brothers, Inc country butcher shop

NOT ALL BIRDSEED IS CREATED EQUAL. Quality birdseed not only contains specific ingredients, but it contains larger amounts of these key components and less fillers. Generally, birds are not picky eaters; but birdseed blends that contain higher-quality ingredients will attract a larger variety of birds and will give them the essential nutrients they desire. When shopping for quality birdseed, keep these things in mind: MIX PROPORTIONS Since larger quantities are listed first, look for sunflower seed, millet, nyjer, fruit, and nuts at the top of the list of ingredients. These are the quality ingredients birds love. Fillers like milo and cracked corn should be listed last or at least after the higher quality ingredients. FRESHNESS Fresh, top quality seed and blends are the foundation for attracting birds. If you can see through the bag, pick it up and physically inspect the product. There shouldn’t be any dust flying out of the bag and the ingredients should be whole and free of debris and empty hulls. Always store your seed in a cool, dry location to preserve freshness. INGREDIENTS Aside from the ingredients listed on the back of the bag, look for blend specifics to be listed elsewhere on the bag–preferably on the front. Quality blends will state that they contain “no fillers” or “no waste” and may also state the proportions of seeds used in that particular blend.

arden design is the foundation to any great landscape and the main garden style (traditional, colonial, Asian, etc.) is the basic look for the property. The specialty garden can be an underlying theme or area(s) that engage the homeowner and their families, strengthening their bond with the environment, and can often times intertwine. Here are some examples that are applied more regularly in our area:

SHADE/WOODLAND Essential in a designer’s arsenal. It not only can fit into most garden styles, but in our neck of the woods, is downright necessary. After all – Pennsylvania means Penn’s Woods! There are differing levels of shade (part shade, dappled shade, full shade), but generally these gardens would be any area that gets five hours or less of direct sun a day, preferably in the morning. Some plant examples are Hosta, Rhododendron, and Astilbe.

MEADOW

WINTER INTEREST There isn’t any reason we can’t enjoy our garden throughout the winter! Incorporating plants that carry the garden through the winter is basic design. But evergreens can only do so much. Use perennials and shrubs that flower in late winter (Lenton Rose, Witch Hazel), or perennials and grasses with structure that can hold up a pretty snow dusting (Fountain Grass, Sedum). Add some trees or shrubs with alternative color or interesting structure or bark (Coral Bark Maple, Red Twig Dogwood, and Winterberry Holly). MEADOW Aims to replicate native open land with a mix of grasses and wildflowers. Sit back and enjoy the view, or maintain a path through the meadow. Can also be used as a replacement to expansive

ROCK

SPECIALT Y G ARD ENS W ITH I N TH E L A N DS C A P E lawns or other open areas that can be a very ecologically sound alternative. Make sure to include some bird houses as you will have a lot of activity! Switch Grass, Coneflowers, and Black Eyed Susan are examples of plants used.

WATER

ROCK These fit flawlessly into a hillside, natural outcropping, or boulder wall. Creeping, dwarf, and drought tolerant plants are often used to fill in spaces between the boulders to create a uniquely textured ground cover or living wall. These gardens are usually informal or natural in appearance. Some popular plants for this application are weeping Japanese Maple, Junipers, and Sedum. WATER Many find the sound of trickling water soothing, and others love their koi and goldfish ponds! Make sure to add in some plant material for filtering, cover from predators, and aesthetics. Water gardens can range from a half barrel kept on your patio, to a large swimming pond with a dock. You can even utilize a natural spring or stream. Some plants that take being submerged are Iris and Water Lily. Rain garden plants can be used streamside.

RAIN

RAIN There is nothing pretty about an empty retention basin. Rain gardens transform these bland necessities or naturally occurring low areas into attractive and functional spaces. The plants can soak up more water than grass, they require less maintenance than a grass basin after it is grown in, and it provides a little haven for wildlife. Being as these areas can be submerged or saturated for extended periods of time, the plant palette is very select as with water gardens. Some examples are River Birch, Summer Sweet, and Sweetflag.

WILDLIFE

WILDLIFE These areas tend to look more natural but can also have some formality to them. They employ plants that attract certain wildlife such as butterflies, birds, and in some cases, bees, using mostly natives plant materials. Accessories can include bird and hummingbird feeders, birdbaths and butterfly watering dishes, bee houses, and bat houses. They are wonderful learning centers for children and tend to have lasting effect through the winter as well. Some plants to use are Butterfly Bush, Viburnum, and Catmint. CUTTING For the homeowners that LOVE fresh cut flowers!

CUTTING

Not all flowers cut the same as some keep longer than others and these are the plants that are used for cutting gardens. As an added bonus, these gardens also tend to attract some attention from our friends mentioned prior. Make sure to use some fragrant flowers so that you can bring the perfume into your home! Some flowers that hold up well are Lilac, Hydrangea, and Daisies.

CHILDRENS Tailored to children’s imaginations. Use plants to provide nooks to hide in or that can grow into a fort. My daughter and her friends love our weeping cherry fort, I dare not prune it! They can also include fragrant flowers, furniture, play houses, tree houses, and a garden bed or planters for them to experiment growing plants of their choosing! It is my experience that plants will get picked. Make sure to not use plants that are spiny, irritating or poisonous.

EDIBLE The variations are staggering and it depends on the space and needs of the homeowner. They can be as simple as a few planters, an orchard, or a formally laid out area with raised plots, a potting shed, and compost area. Self sufficiency, clean food, and education for children are just some of the benefits of these highly involved areas. Make sure to throw in some bee attractors for pollination, and ask your designer about companion planting (planting species together for the benefit of one or both) and permaculture (permanent agriculture–edible gardens modeled by nature). It is important to explain to children the difference between edible and non-edible plants in the garden and in the wild. Even edible plants have other parts that are poisonous (like tomato).

From the Ground Up In today’s world, the variety of products available for the flooring of your outdoor room is quite extensive. Even with the vast choices available, they can be divided into several categories. The most commonly used materials are clay brick pavers, concrete pavers, natural bluestone, stamped concrete and composite decking. How do you decide which one is right for you? GREG HEBEL, LANDSCAPE DESIGN & SALES

Clay brick pavers are a traditional material which has been around for centuries and continues to be a mainstay in the modern outdoor living environment. They hold up very well to heavy foot traffic as well as severe temperature and weather conditions. The standard paver size is 4” x 8”, therefore, the patterns can be somewhat limited: the most common are herringbone, basket weave and running bond. There are variations in color and textures, but most brick pavers are produced in red hues which makes them a great choice for historic properties. Installation is available in either dry or wet laid applications.

The appearance of concrete pavers are similar to their clay counter parts, however they have some very distinct differences. Due to the fact that they are made from concrete, the variations in size and shape is virtually unlimited. The range of colors is very diverse as well, with each manufacturer offering many options. Other differences include texture and finish– from very smooth with sharp edges to tumbled pavers with a soft, worn or aged appearance. This product can be up to 50% more expensive then clay pavers, however, the standards in the production process are well worth the added expense. Concrete pavers are almost always dry laid, allowing for the movement of freeze and thaw without creating the cracking often seen in traditional concrete installations. Minor repairs can be made easily, but tiny joints can also be home to weeds, especially in shady damp areas. Periodic applications of herbicides will keep concrete paver installations looking its best.

For those looking for a less expensive alternative, stamped concrete will fit the bill. With advances in technology and methodology, stamped concrete has come a long way in the past few decades. It is available in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes–from grays and blues to mimic the look of bluestone, to browns and tans that look like irregular flagstone, to reds for the brick-like look. By simply pressing large rubber stamps into lightly cured concrete, any number of patterns such as squares, circles, irregular joints, can easily be created. Stamped concrete will last as well as any paving option provide it has a good base, regular expansion joints and a regular surface sealing. Installations should always be performed by an experienced stamped concrete installer.

Natural Pennsylvania bluestone is a great choice in Bucks County because of its rich farming heritage. The natural stone blends perfectly with most building stones and is a wonderful complement to the traditional Bucks County farmhouse. But this material is not just for older homes–it works well almost anywhere the feel and look of natural beauty is required. Pennsylvania bluestone is commonly available in combinations of blue/blue, random blue/grey/rust, and lilac purple/red. Because it is a natural product, there will be variations in color from piece to piece, regardless of the color choice. Bluestone is available in standard sizes of rectangular cut stones from 12” x 12” to 24” x 36”. Irregular bluestone are random in size and shape and provides a natural look.

Both styles of bluestone can be installed either dry or wet laid and are more costly than clay or concrete paver bricks.

Composite decking has all but replaced the pressure treated pine decks of yesterday. Today, there are more then 60 brands of composite decking, each with its own style, color and pattern. Most of these materials are made from a combination of recycled plastic and wood shavings. The strict standards in manufacturing make installing composite decks a snap– sometimes, quite literally. However, the manufacturing process also makes this product much more expensive than standard pressure-treated decking. In addition, decking also requires a building permit from your local municipality. But when your outdoor living space is off the ground, there may be no other choice. As far as maintenance goes, it can’t get any easier– simply wash your deck with a hose from time to time and forget about termites and splinters. Chosing from all of these options commonly comes down to two factors: appearance and cost. There are, however, existing conditions that often lead to choosing one product over another. And when there aren’t any, cost may still play a back seat. Sometimes it simply comes down to personal preference. A good landscape designer will help you identify yours.

RiD Your Lawn of Pesky WeeDs! 7 M O ST COMMON WEEDS & HOW TO CO N T R OL T HE M Lawn and garden weeds are a pesky task to conquer, even for the most seasoned gardener. However, if you know the proper way to treat each weed, you’ll be in better shape than your lawn! Identifying the weed is key to its control. Here are the Top 7 most common lawn and garden weeds that we are asked about! 1 CRABGRASS Digitaria spp Two species are found in turf grass in Pennsylvania, hairy and smooth. Both are summer annuals and have wide ¼” to ½“ sparsely hairy, pale, green leaves that taper to a point. Seeds germinate in the spring when soil temperatures are between 55º and 58º for several consecutive days. They die after the first fall frost. Control: Use Ortho Weed B Gone Max from emergence until 3”–4” in height. If pre-emergent, use Bonide Crabgrass Preventer Phase 1. Organic: Espoma Organic Weed Preventer 2 CANADA THISTLE Cirsium arvense This is a spreading rhizomatous perennial weed that produces pink or purple flowers in late June through September. After the first flower bud forms but before the first flower opens, it’s important to apply a post-emergent herbicide. While attempting to control this weed, avoid hand pulling or mowing since removing the shoots can stimulate growth. Apply in the fall. Control: Use Round Up Weed Killer. Organic: Bonide Burnout Weed/Grass Killer 3 YELLOW NUTSEDGE Cyperus esculentus While not a true grass, this weed is a member of the sedge family. You can easily spot this weed in your lawn by its erect triangular stems, and it is commonly found in damp to wet areas. The leaves and stems are a shiny, yellow-green color. The leaves and stems die in winter, but new growth occurs in spring and summer from nutlets that grow underground. Control: Use Bonide Sedge Ender Organic: No organic option available

4 NIMBLEWEED Muhlenbergia schreberi This is a blue-green perennial grass that is commonly found in lawns during the summer. It grows rapidly during the summer months, turns brown or tan in winter, but stolons persist and re-sprout in spring. It spreads over existing turf and forms dense patches. This weed flowers from August to October. Control: Use Round Up Weed Killer. Organic: Bonide Burnout Weed/Grass Killer 5 DANDELION Taraxacum officinale You may recognize the bright yellow flowers on top of long stems in the early summer months. Dandelions produce a second bloom in the fall. This weed produces a thick taproot that penetrates up to several inches into the soil. Control: Use Bonide Weed Beater Ultra. Organic: Bonide Burnout Weed/Grass Killer 6 GROUND IVY Glecoma hederacea This weed is a member of the mint family, has square stems, and is a low-growing, creeping perennial weed with broad leafs. It produces blue or purple trumpet shaped flowers. While it can grow in full sun, it is most common in shaded areas. Control: Use Bonide Weed Beater Ultra. Organic: Bonide Burnout Weed/Grass Killer 7 PROSTRATE KNOTWEED 1PMZHPOVN BWJDVMBSF You’ll find this low-growing annual in the summer months. It has small white flowers, and the most distinct feature is the papery sheath at the base of each leaf. It is well adaptive to compacted soils, along sidewalks, and turf areas, and it is one of the first summer annual weeds to emerge. Apply when weed is growing actively. Control: Use Bonide Weed Beater Ultra. Organic: Bonide Burnout Weed/Grass Killer

Take Back the Outdoors PROTECT YOUR FAMILY FROM DEER TICKS Lyme disease can cause a lengthy list of symptoms. One of the earliest signs that Lyme disease may be apparent in humans is Erythema Migrans (EM), also known as the bull’s-eye rash. If visible, contact a physician immediately to seek the proper treatment. Other symptoms can include: fatigue, joint pain, dizziness, chills, fever, headache, and Bell’s palsy. There are precautions that you can take. Damminix Tick Tubes are a great solution for taking back the outdoors. These tubes rely on the natural nesting instincts of mice to aid in this battle. Tick Tubes deliver a tick controlling insecticide directly to the mice and the ticks and nymphs they infect.

Over the next few months, many of us will be spending a lot of time outdoors. Whether it is working in the garden, enjoying a nice cup of coffee on your patio, or taking a long walk in the park, the outdoors become a sanctuary we enjoy during the spring and summer months. However, with this luxury, we should all be cautiously aware of deer ticks. Although they are tiny bugs, they can cause a huge problem. Did you know that deer ticks actually contract Lyme disease from mice and not deer? The tick’s name easily allows us to think this common misconception, but mice are in fact the main carriers of the Lyme disease-causing bacteria. Ticks embed themselves in the nesting of infected, diseasecarrying mice. Ticks become infected as well and then lay their eggs. When the nymphs hatch, which is typically in April, they, too, become infected by the mice and the spreading of the disease becomes prominent. It is important to rid these ticks during the nymph-hatching period to ensure that these now-infected nymphs don’t infect other low-baring wild animals, humans, and pets. Ticks cannot jump or fly, which works in our favor. However, they do rest on the ends of grasses and shrubs and wait until their host brushes up against them to attach, making us and our pets easy targets in the garden. In most cases, the tick must be attached for 36 to 48 hours or more before the Lyme disease bacterium can be transmitted from tick to host. In 2015, 95% of confirmed Lyme disease cases in the United States were reported from 14 Northeastern and Midwestern states, including Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Deer ticks are the main source for spreading Lyme disease.

These environmentally friendly tubes consist of biodegradable cardboard with permethrin treated cotton. Simply spread the tubes in areas where mice are most likely to inhabit. The mice then take the cotton from the tubes and use it for bedding. The permethrin from the cotton is released onto the animal’s fur and deer ticks that feed on the mice are killed before they can spread Lyme disease to you, your family, and your pets. These tubes have proven a 90% reduction of exposure to potentially infected deer ticks. Damminix Tick Tubes are available at Bucks Country Gardens, along with other preventatives, such as Sevin Ready-To-Spray Bug Killer, by GardenTech. Sevin protects against beetles, ticks, and worms. With this product, there is no mixing, no measuring, and no mess. Simply attach it to your garden hose and spray in the farthest corner of your yard and work backward. If you have any questions regarding the application, the do’s and don’ts, or the uses of these products, stop in and ask any one of our knowledgeable sales people for further advice. While there may not be a Lyme disease vaccine available, use recommended repellents, walk in the center of paths, bathe and shower as soon as possible after being outdoors, and check your body for ticks – especially in sock bands and the waste band of your pants. Don’t let the risk of Lyme disease prevent you from enjoying your outdoor oasis. By taking the proper precautions, you, your family, and your pets can safely enjoy the outdoors for many more years to come!

Solar Panels

WHERE ARE WE NOW?

Our solar electric generation field is working overtime… but I still can’t get it to work nights. The system we installed in July 2011 is operating at over 100% of projections and has produced over 800,000 kWh of electricity. We are producing more than 50% of our annual electric needs for the Garden Center, Warehouse, Barn, Office and Farmhouse. That’s over $30,000 of electricity, enough to power 16 houses and saves more than 375,000 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions annually. In terms of carbon dioxide reduction, the system is the equivalent of planting 459,000 trees per year! On sunny days, we produce more electricity than we use and send excess power to the grid and into our neighbors’ homes. Even in December, the least efficient month for solar production, we outproduced our needs on numerous days. In October,

when we use the least electricity, the excess we sent to the grid was 250kWh, or enough to supply a typical residence for the entire month. TOM HEBEL, PRESIDENT

Old-Fashion Cottage Gardens There is something almost mystical about cottage gardens. Cottage gardens as we see them today are not what they used to be in the days of old. A bit of land around a small abode is where people of lower class would raise most of the things they needed: vegetables, herbs (culinary and medicinal), fruit, small trees, fragrant plants, wild flowers, bees, and possibly small livestock. Besides the possibility of vegetable rows, these gardens were packed full of useful plants, in random beautiful disarray, until there was no soil showing. As times changed and trading grew, new plants from far off lands were introduced that focused on flowering. These flowering plants started to take the place of production plants, and thus the cottage garden that we are familiar with started to emerge. Today, the style is still a random beautiful disarray, multi-layered, mixed border planting exploding with color throughout the season. These gardens are a melting pot of different types of plant material, especially perennials, herbs, annuals, flowering shrubs, small trees and evergreens.

It is not uncommon to see a structure take the subtle road to focal point, as the garden can often times be seen consuming parts of structures. Climbing hydrangeas are beautiful selfadhesive climbers that can grow on a residence or other small buildings. Other structures in the garden, such as arbors and pergolas, make the perfect support for the dripping flowers of wisteria or honeysuckle. If you don’t have room for a large structure, use a trellis or lattice piece to create vertical height. Climbing roses or hybrid clematis varieties are perfect for these types of structures. They come in an array of colors and add the perfect charm to your cottage garden. Don’t forget the quintessential picket fence–in natural rustic materials or painted wood. A front fence can soften the look of sprawling plants and support tall and rambling flower stems. This style of garden is a double edged sword when it comes to maintenance. I have a working (old style) cottage garden where most of the plants are edible or used in some fashion. Once it is all grown in, there is really no need for mulch due to the absence of bed space. It is the bed that I weed the least. Because of the planting density, weeds do not have much light to get started. I do however, spend a good amount of time caring for this garden in the way of tending to the plants themselves:

pruning/tipping back, cutting back certain perennials that get floppy, cutting back plants I do not want to go to seed, harvesting herbs, or letting other plants go to seed and spreading the seeds in a certain area to continue desirables. The cottage style garden can fit into any setting and can use any plants–whether it’s a sunny border, a shady nook, a patio container arrangement, or a small townhouse setting. The main focus is thoughtful chaos, color, and form. Hollyhocks, Delphiniums, and Foxgloves are some of the “old-fashioned” favorites in a cottage garden. These perennial or biennials are the backbone of the garden, providing vertical height and striking flowers. Plant them along walls and fences to create a beautiful backdrop, since many of these varieties grow to several feet tall. Mix in other layers of perennials, such as Coneflower, Shasta Daisy, Black Eyed Susan, Garden Phlox, Coreopsis, Yarrow, Catmint and Anemones to create color throughout the season. Use smaller plants, such as Dianthus, Coral Bells, and Lady’s Mantle as border plants in the front. Annuals, like Snapdragons and Cosmos, also have a home in the cottage garden as bedding or container plants. The following is a list of some other plants that are commonly seen in cottage gardens:

Shrubs: Roses, Lilacs, Rose of Sharon, Hydrangeas, Clethra Perennials: Iris, Peony, Lavender, Bellflower, Bee Balm, Columbine, Bleeding Heart Annuals: Alyssum, Pansy, Violet, Salvia, Angelonia, Zinnia Herbs: Sage, Rosemary, Thyme, Oregano It is interesting to note that this style is also a parent of a very popular garden style here on the east cost of the US–the colonial garden. The colonial garden is a mix of lower and working classes’ cottage gardens, with the more formal gardens of the affluent that came to the new world. With this marriage you see the soft formality that has taken hold of our area – evergreen plants such as Boxwood, Japanese Holly, and Cherry Laurel give the structure to the design while flowering shrubs, perennials, and/or annuals fill the voids providing color throughout the seasons. The beds tend to be more of a geometric shape, and the informality is provided by the mixed flowering plants. A rustic touch is introduced with picket or other older style fences, terra cotta planters, and brick or gravel walkways and paths. We are in a part of the world that has a deeprooted history in green space and horticulture. We owe a lot to the cottage garden, and can see its influence as we drive through our neighborhoods. Our knowledgeable nursery staff and talented design team can help you design and build the cottage garden of your dreams!

HYDRANGEAS~

To Prune O O Not to Prune?. OR

THA T IS THE QUESTION.

Not all hydrangeas are created the same–

therefore, in order to prune your hydrangea, first you must know exactly what type of hydrangea you have. Untimely pruning and improper site location are the top two reasons for a flowering problem and each type of hydrangea requires specific care. When pruning hydrangeas, Bucks Co-untry Gardens’ resident Horticulturist, David Jones, follows two basic rules: First, remove a branch if it is crossing over another to allow for better air circulation; Second, remove what he calls the “Three D’s”... Diseased, Dead or Decayed wood. Below is a guide to assist you in getting the best blooms from your hydrangea by properly pruning.

BIGLEAF HYDRANGEA Typical cultivars: LA Dreaming, Endless Summer, Forever & Ever, Blue Bird, Zebra, Zorro This type of hydrangea is your classic type with ball-shaped blooms that are blue or pink depending on the acidity or alkalinity of your soil. Because this type of hydrangea blooms on last year’s wood, pruning should be kept to a minimum. Once new growth starts to appear in the spring and the parts that are not going to sprout are visible, cut off those dead branches. If you need to narrow your plant, select stems at the bottom of the plant and take them all the way out. Evaluate the Three D’s and prune as needed. Over pruning will result in no flowers.

PANICLE HYDRANGEA Typical cultivars: Limelight, Vanilla Strawberry, Little Lime, Quick Fire The Panicle Hydrangea is unlike most hydrangeas in that it can withstand full day sun. It has creamy white flowers tinged with green, which bloom on new wood. Blooming on new wood means that you can cut the plant back by ¾ and have excellent results. All pruning should be done in the winter or pre-spring.

in deep, deep shade. And, most hydrangeas prefer morning sun and afternoon shade, with the exception of Panicle Hydrangeas, which can tolerate sun all day. Also, be careful when fertilizing your hydrangeas; too much nitrogen will cause your hydrangeas to grow plenty of green foliage, but no blooms. Hydrangeas are the most popular selling summer-flowering shrubs at Bucks Country Gardens. Available in shades of white, green, pink or blue, they are a beautiful addition to any landscape and there are an endless number of varieties. So if you don’t see your specific variety mentioned in this article, feel free to stop in and ask one of our experts any questions you may have.

JESSIE TANSKI, PR & SOCIAL MEDIA DAVID JONES, HORTICULTURIST

OAKLEAF HYDRANGEA 5ZQJDBM DVMUJWBST 4OPX 2VFFO 3VCZ 4MJQQFST 1FF 8FF This hydrangea is known for its oak leaf-shaped leaves. While it can handle full sun, the Oakleaf Hydrangea does best with morning sun and light afternoon shade. This slow growing hydrangea blooms on old wood which means pruning lightly only for shape, crossing wood and the Three D’s. Take special care pruning since any living tip you prune means less future flowers. Pruning should be done in the late winter, if at all.

CLIMBING HYDRANGEA 5ZQJDBM DVMUJWBS 1FUJPMBSJT The Climbing Hydrangea can be trained onto walls. Living up to the old gardener’s saying about vines, “First it sleeps, then it creeps, then it leaps, the Climbing Hydrangea is slow growing for the first two to three years and becomes fast growing once established. Its wide, lacecap flowers may take three to five years to start blooming. Because it blooms on old wood, pruning should be done in the winter and you should be very selective in what you do prune. Limit yourself to pruning the Three D’s and any wayward stems for shape correction.

SMOOTH HYDRANGEA Typical cultivar: Annabelle Smooth Hydrangeas are extremely striking in mass plantings. They have a lacecap look, with a mixture of a few large flowers and many small flowers. Pure white blooms morph into a pale green color as the plant ages. This particular type of hydrangea blooms on new wood. Pruning should be done in the late winter or early spring. Generally speaking, if you are having blooming problems, there are a few common factors that all hydrangea gardeners should be aware of. Hydrangeas like rich, moist soil. They need to be watered generously, especially on hot days. David says, “Lighting is very important to hydrangeas. Hydrangeas won’t bloom

Beneath the Water’s Surface Three Ways to Keep Ponds & Water Gardens Crystal Clear Simply-Clear Simply-Clear is a great, fast-acting bacterial pond clarifier. It consumes waste products, like phosphates and nitrates, which cloud the water. This product works through natural bacterial action by feeding on microscopic organic materials that cause cloudy water. Since Simply-Clear is an organic product, it would also be safe for cloudy fountain or bird bath water. Unlike natural ponds, man-made water gardens and koi ponds require proper care and maintenance to remain healthy and beautiful. Although they may look natural, there are a few necessary pond maintenance products you’ll need to utilize to allow your pond to thrive. Here are a few items we recommend to help properly open and maintain your pond throughout the season, as well as some popular aquatic plants to keep your water garden looking beautiful.

Microbe-Lift PL This is an all-natural product that helps keep your pond looking clean and clear by creating a healthy pond environment. Microbe-Lift PL is the perfect product to add to your pond when you first start it or open it after winter. It gets the environment ready for aquatic life by feeding and maintaining the biological filter with beneficial bacteria. This bacterium helps eliminate toxins from the water like ammonia and nitrogen, breaks down dead algae, improves oxygen levels, and digests organic sludge.

Aquatic Plants Aquatic plants serve a much greater purpose than just making your water garden look beautiful. These plants feed on the organic waste material in your pond and help to oxygenate the water. They also give the fish a place to hide from predators and areas to shade themselves from the hot summer sun. By properly planting your pond, it will allow your water garden to resemble an environment like those found in nature. In fact, we suggest covering about 50% of your pond surface with aquatic plants. Generally, the more plants, the better your water clarity will be!

Submerged aquatic plants are the next category. These plants grow entirely below the water’s surface. Examples include Anacharis, Cabomba, and Hornwort. A great benefit for putting these plants in your pond is they provide a safe haven for fish to spawn and stay out of harms way. Small fish will use these plants as shelter. Submerged plants will aid in the improvement of water quality and are efficient at keeping algae blooms to a minimum due to their nutrient absorption. The final category is bog or marginal plants. You will find these beauties growing in the shallow or bog areas of your pond. Typically, they prefer to be in 2”–6” of water and make great accent plants along a bank. Like most perennial aquatic plants, they do require regular fertilization throughout the year and enjoy a great deal of sunshine. Examples include Iris, Cattails, and Sweet Flag.

There are three different types of aquatic plants that you can mix and match to reach that coverage percentage with optimal visual interest. The first category embraces floating plants. There are two different types that are easily distinguishable from where their roots are. The first has its roots dangling in the water with the entire plant at the surface. Examples include Water Lettuce, Hyacinths, and Salvinia. The second type is one in which the roots are embedded in the soil, but the leaves are at the water’s surface. Water Lilies and Water Poppies are great examples.

We have everything you need for pond startup and maintenance. In addition to chemicals and plants, we also have pumps and filters to keep your pond clean and clear. We offer pond water testing on the spot where we can quickly diagnose issues you may have with your pond water. Now’s the time to get your water garden started on the right foot!

A. BERLIN GARDENS We are always on the lookout for the latest and greatest in casual furniture. We strive to find both comfort and function as well as on-trend design. I’m sure you’ll agree that these fresh finds for 2016 really fit the bill.

BERLIN GARDENS A few years ago, we chose to not jump on the bandwagon when everyone else started showing brightly colored poly adirondack chairs. We waited until we found just the right company to bring you quality, ease of maintenance, great colors and comfort. We found it all with Berlin Gardens adirondacks. Berlin Gardens builds solid outdoor wood-look furniture and structures that are beautifully designed and amazingly durable. They utilize a team of Amish craftsmen that combine traditional old world craftsmanship with the modern technology of poly timber. Poly timber is molded to create a wood look and is an environmentally friendly choice because it is made from recycled milk jugs. Because poly timber is essentially a heavy duty plastic, Berlin Gardens furniture is built to last without the hassles typically associated with real wood upkeep. It does not need painting and can withstand harsh weather. Additional features include fully welded aluminum frames under the tables and thicker support pieces. This season, we are offering their comfo-back Adirondack chairs in regular, folding, and counter height dining. What is comfoback? Berlin Gardens has taken the traditional adirondack and added a refined modern feel with a higher back and more contoured style for additional comfort.

Prevention is Key!

Keeping Dogs Safe from Lyme Disease What causes Lyme disease in dogs? Lyme disease is caused by a small bacterium called Borrelia burgdorferi. These bacteria live inside a species of ticks known as Ixodes ticks. This “deer tick” functions as a vector to inject the bacteria into our beloved house pets. When a tick bites a dog, the bacteria move from the tick’s gut up to its mouth where they are then injected into the dog’s bloodstream. The tick needs to be attached for about 48 hours for the bacteria to move into the dog.

result, further testing may be performed. A vaccination against the bacterium that causes Lyme disease is recommended for added protection. These vaccines require two booster shots given three to four weeks apart and then the vaccine is boostered during your dog’s annual exam.

Prevention is key!

Your dog should Larva be on a monthly tick preventative all year. The best tick preventatives Nymph Adult Male Adult Female are those that repel Ticks shown not to scale ticks so they can’t bite at all. Your pets will thank you! Some of the best preventatives come in the form of an oral tablet (Nexgard), a nontoxic collar (Seresto), or a topical liquid that is applied to the skin on their back (K9 Advantix II, Parastar Plus, Vectra). Do not use these products on cats. Please consult your veterinarian to discuss the products and vaccines that are right for your dog. Let’s keep our dogs safe so they can enjoy the outdoors for many years to come!

Your dog’s veterinarian should perform a blood test yearly to check for the presence of Borrelia antibodies. Depending on this

—Marisa Brunetti, VMD

What are the signs of Lyme disease? Unfortunately, 90-95% of dogs are asymptomatic, which means that they will not show any symptoms. If they do show signs, the most common is lameness of one or multiple limbs, which is typically treated with an antibiotic. Lethargy, decreased appetite, or fever can also be seen. The red “bull’s eye” lesion, which is seen on humans, can appear transiently in dogs but is very rare. A more severe, uncommon form of Lyme disease can affect a dog’s kidneys and lead to kidney failure.

TASTE THE RAINBOW!

GROW THE RAINBOW!

RED

There are a number of ways that you can grow your own rainbow. Seeds and starter plants both work equally well for the following three growing methods. See which one you think will work best for you, and start growing today to a better, healthier you.

-PBE :PVS 1MBUF 3FE 1FQQFST 5PNBUPFT 8BUFSNFMPO BOE 3BTQCFSSJFT Red foods are great for the circulatory system. These foods are rich in phytonutrients, lycopene and anthocyanin, which aid in building healthy cell walls to improve blood pressure, organ function, and may even help protect against prostate and breast cancers.

ORANGE -PBE :PVS 1MBUF $BSSPUT $BOUBMPVQF 4XFFU 1PUBUPFT BOE 4RVBTI Orange foods contain large amounts of beta-carotene. Our bodies transform this into Vitamin A and antioxidants to assist in the prevention of cancer, heart disease, and infections. This active form of Vitamin A helps keep our eyes, bones, and immune system healthy!

YELLOW -PBE :PVS 1MBUF $PSO 4RVBTI 1FQQFST and Lemons. Yellow foods are rich in Vitamin C. This nutrient helps reduce inflammation, prevent allergies, and maintain healthy skin. These foods also contain components that strengthen the collagen in your skin, ligaments, cartilage, and tendons.

GREEN -PBE :PVS 1MBUF 4QJOBDI ,BMF #SPDDPMJ and Zucchini. Green foods contain large amounts of Vitamin K, which helps build strong bones and clot blood. These foods get their color from chlorophyll which is a natural blood purifier that supports liver and kidney function and the elimination of toxins.

PURPLE & BLUE -PBE :PVS 1MBUF #MVFCFSSJFT &HHQMBOU Beets, and Blackberries. Did you know that purple foods contain the most antioxidants over all of the other colored foods? These foods are associated with keeping the heart healthy and the brain functioning at optimal levels. Now don’t go crowding your plate with only purple foods, it’s important to balance out your meal!

CONTAINER GARDENS This is a great way to have fresh veggies and herbs close to your kitchen. Containers are the perfect solution for small spaces, patios, or decks. Almost any type of vegetable can be grown in containers, as long as they have enough room to grow. The bigger the pot, the better–just make sure there is a drainage hole! Strawberries, peppers, lettuce, spinach and tomatoes do very well in containers. Don’t forget to use supports and tomato cages in your containers!

RAISED BEDS If you have limited room, raised beds are space efficient and can be built to fit any space. The number one benefit of using raised beds is the fact that you can build your soil to fit your needs, rather than alter the soil that is in the ground already at your growing location. It is fresh, aerated soil and not compacted from walking on it. Aerated soil allows excess water to drain more quickly. This method also saves time with common garden chores, like watering and weeding, because you can easily reach the middle of the beds from both sides. Because the soil in containers warms more quickly than the ground, you can start your cool weather crops earlier like lettuce, spinach and kale. Anything can be grown in raised beds, even root veggies like carrots and beets. Or, try going vertical with veggies like cucumbers and beans. The possibilities are endless!

TRADITIONAL BEDS Do you have areas in your yard that you’ve been tending for years that have repeatedly given you excellent crops?

No need to try something new. Traditional beds can hold any crop as long as the soil will promote great growth. However, it is critical that you rotate your crops between your beds every season. If you grow tomatoes in the same bed year after year, your yield will decline. Additionally, your plants will become more susceptible to plant-specific insects and/or disease.

WHaT makes an HeiRlooM... ...an Heirloom?

NOW TRENDING! Add fresh fruit and veggies to yogurt and smoothies, to your water bottle for a tasty twist, or incorporate into some of your kids’ favorite dishes such as quesadillas, tomato sauce and more. Growing–and eating–the colors of the rainbow can be a lot of fun! Try it out and share your success with us.

BECKY JONES, GREENHOUSE JESSIE TANSKI. PR & SOCIAL MEDIA Heirloom plants come from seeds that have been handed down for generations in a specific region or area, and they tend to be picked for a special trait. They often date at least 50 years old and pre-date World War II varieties. Human involvement is extremely minimal and pollination is through insects or wind. Heirlooms boast greater flavors than hybrids but are less predictable in appearance. Despite their quirky looks, they have unbeatable flavor, especially the tomatoes! There is nothing better than a juicy, plump heirloom tomato plucked right from the plant! At Bucks Country Gardens, we sell many varieties of heirloom vegetables. Purchase as seeds or as starter plants... either way, you’ll yield a great, delicious crop!

Starter Plants

Tomato varieties include: Amish Paste, great for sauces; Beefsteak, deliciously sweet; and Brandywine Red, which offers less acidic flavor. Pepper varieties include: California Wonder, a sweet bell; Hungarian Hot Wax, a banana/wax pepper; and Corno Di Toro Rosso, a sweet Italian. Eggplant varieties include: Black Beauty, a quick ripener and Louisana Long Green, boasting a mild-sweet flavor.

Seed Packets

We also sell a vast selection of heirloom seeds from Livingston Seed including: beans, beets, carrots, cucumbers, radishes, onions, squash, tomatoes, lettuces, and melons. These seeds are not genetically modified organisms (GMOs) as they have not been altered or manipulated at the gene level and have been harvested for generations. SUPPORTS FOR EDIBLE GARDENI N G Edible gardening has increased in popularity in recent years and everyone is on the hunt for fresher, healthier foods to enhance their diet. You can grow fresh edibles in container gardens, raised beds, windowsill planters and greenhouses, just choose a method that will work best for you. Regardless of the technique you select, keep in mind–you must support your plants! Plant supports come in a variety of styles and materials and are extremely versatile when it comes to growing veggies. Most edible plants will need some kind of support at one point or another– especially ones that bare larger fruits (fruit being the universal term for both fruit and vegetable plants.) Choosing the right support can mean the difference between a successful harvest and a disappointing one.

Tomato Cages Ahh, the quintessential support for tomato plants! Tomato cages allow the plant to be supported from infancy to full maturity. The cage keeps the plant gathered together as it grows, but still allows for easy harvesting. Aside from tomatoes, you can also utilize tomato cages for plants that grow on a vine, like cucumbers and squash. And, it’s easier than you may think. Simply turn your cage upside down, with the large edge touching the earth, and secure it with a few landscape fabric pins to prevent it from falling over.

Bamboo Stakes Bamboo stakes are perfect for those plants that are petite, like beans, or bare heavier fruits, like peppers. They come in an assortment of lengths and diameters. Their lightweight, yet strong and flexible properties provide easy support for your plants, while allowing them to flex and bend with the elements.

Hardwood Stakes Like bamboo, hardwood stakes come in a variety of lengths and widths; however, they are more durable and are able to handle more weight. Use a hardwood stake to support a tomato plant or even use them to keep corn stalks from falling over during heavy summer winds. Get creative and nail a group of hardwood stakes together to make your own trellis or cage!

Trellises Trellises are excellent for more than just climbing non-edibles, like clematis and ivy. Use them for vine-like veggies:. cucumbers, squash, beans, and peas. For larger fruit-baring edibles, anchor your trellis by using a hardwood stake or by attaching it to the side of a wall. You can even lean your trellis at a 45-degree angle and support it with a few stakes. Not only will this allow for easy climbing, but also make harvesting a breeze as the fruit will hang down underneath the trellis.

Picking the right supports for your plants is just as important as selecting the plants themselves. Plan ahead and buy your supports when you buy your plants. Don’t wait until they start to fall over to think about how to support them! If you “train” your plants while they are still young, they will develop stronger stems as they mature. Not to mention, fully matured plants can be rather large, thus making it difficult to support them at optimal growth. A little planning goes a long way in keeping your edible garden healthy and your harvests bountiful!

“It’s a great feeling to walk into your own gardens and pick everything you need for a fresh salad.” ! Darryl Richard, Garden Center Manager

We are more than just garden center employees: we are passionate about the work we do at work and at home! Some of us like to garden because it is deeply rooted in our heritage and others simply because it’s therapeutic. Here are some fantastic reasons why we, at Bucks Country Gardens, like to garden. “I garden because of the love and passion that my family has for gardening. It’s been passed down from my uncle and mother.” “Most of my ‘gardening’ is with annual flowers because I love color. Color brings my gardens to life, adding another emotional dimension for me. I also like to see things grow and develop through the seasons. Change in the garden is a great thing!”

“I enjoy gardening because it is relaxing. It is an activity that my husband and I can do together. Each year we plan a new and different design for our window boxes and it becomes a little bit of a competition.”

! Tom Hebel, President

“Everything always tastes better when you grow it yourself.” ! Don Lee, Nursery Sales

“I garden because of my love for cooking. I use fresh herbs in just about every recipe.” ! Jessie Tanski, PR & Social Media

“I garden for self sufficiency, to help wildlife and the environment, and therapy. Oh, and because it’s pretty!”

“Gardening for me is being creative, working with my hands, being a part of the earth, and getting my kids involved. Growing fresh food is a cultural thing for me—my parents, grandparents, and Italian neighbors all grew veggie gardens.” ! Adriene Vesci, Graphic Design & Advertising

“I started out gardening with my dad when I was 6 years old and got the bug for it!” ! Geoff Simpson, Landscape Manager

! Dustin Kratochwill Website & Customer Service

! Donna Dentner, Lifestyle Manager

“I love to garden! Vegetable gardening is very satisfying when you reap the rewards from what you planted. Accomplished, satisfied and just to simply enjoy the way things look when you’re done. I love the challenge to each area.” ! Nancy McIlvaine, Hardgoods Manager

“I find it very relaxing and therapeutic. It helps me to slow down, take a deep breath, and enjoy the beauty within my garden. I also love to play in the dirt!” ! David Jones, Horticulturist, Arborist & Customer Service Specialist

Gardening is such a rewarding way to spend time, but it’s not always tranquil or easy on the wallet. Often garden hacks and tricks of the trade are picked up along the way and stored in every gardener’s wheelbarrow for a later date. Whether you’re a garden rookie or veteran, these tricks are going to make your experience much more exciting. So go ahead, play in the dirt and try some of these garden hacks this spring. I promise, they won’t disappoint! KEY RING: Punch a hole in your plant tags and thread them onto a key ring. Keep all of your plant information nice and organized! But, be sure that you punch a hole in the plant picture so you don’t lose any of the important care information. EGGSHELLS: Don’t throw out used eggshells. Instead, use them to start your seeds and add an extra boost of calcium to your soil. WINE BOTTLE: When you’re done drinking your favorite bottle of wine (or two!), don’t toss the bottle into the recycling bin. Instead, fill it with water and turn it upside down in your garden or planters to keep the soil moist. BAKING SODA: Sprinkle this kitchen staple around the base of your tomato plants to make your favorite tomatoes taste even sweeter! PLASTIC FORKS: While this may look silly, it really works! Align plastic forks (with prongs sticking up) in your garden to help deter rabbits, raccoons, and squirrels from destroying your garden.

SOUR CREAM CUPS: Cut your used sour cream or large yogurt cups into strips and use them as garden markers. They stand up better to the elements than popsicle sticks and you won’t forget which plant you planted where. WATER JUGS: No watering can? No problem! Poke holes into the cap of a water jug and use it as a watering vessel. Make sure you get the gallon jug with the screw cap to ensure that it stays tight. This is especially great for indoor plants! COFFEE GROUNDS: Don’t throw out your used coffee grounds; use them in your garden to keep pests away. Don’t drink coffee? Your local Starbucks may be a participant of their corporate grounds recycle program. The best part? The grounds are free to gardeners! HANGING SHOE HOLDER: Do you have an old hanging shoe holder lying around that you’re not using? Upcycle it into a vertical herb garden. Great for any location–indoor or out. PHOTO ALBUM: Never lose unopened or half used seed packets ever again! Use plastic photo album sleeves to organize and keep them all in one central location. BAR SOAP: Hate getting dirt stuck under your nails after a long hard day of work in the garden? Scratch a bar of soap to fill the gap under your nails before you head outdoors. When you come back in to wash your hands, the underside of your nails will be dirt free!

CITRUS PEELS: Did you know that you can start your seeds in citrus peels? They self-compost and add extra nutrients to the soil when planted. Plus, they’re super cute!

COFFEE FILTERS: Line your planters and pots with coffee filters to slow the draining process. The water can still seep from the soil, but it gives the soil more time to absorb it.

MILK JUGS: If you’re the type that just can’t wait to plant your tender crops until mid-May, then protect your plants from frost and bugs with milk jugs. Simply cut off the bottom and place over your plants to act as mini greenhouses!

Have you ever tried any of these garden hacks before? If not, I recommend getting your hands dirty and giving them the old college try! Happy gardening! For more amazing ideas, visit our Garden Hacks Board on pinterest.com!

Kids in the Garden Wriggle, Wiggle, Squirm! Earthworm Facts Some may describe earthworms as icky, slimy or gross, but not me. Earthworms are magic in the backyard garden, and they are fascinating invertebrates. Earthworms tunnel their way through the soil. These tunnels allow water and oxygen to get down into the soil for plants. Tunneling also makes soil looser and finer so plant roots can develop stronger, more extensive systems. As earthworms move through the soil, they feed on bits of rock and decaying plant material. They turn garbage into rich garden compost. While they accomplish a lot in the garden, worm biology is fairly simple. Earthworms have no eyes, no ears, no nose, no teeth, no skeleton, no lungs, and no legs. But amazingly they have five “hearts” to pump blood. Their bodies are made up of many segments. These segments have bristles or setae that anchor the earthworm during movement. Earthworms move through muscle contractions that alternately shorten and lengthen the body. Like a snake, earthworms also use

THe Worm HunT Need a messy and memorable party game? 8F WF HPU ZPV BOE UIF XPSNT DPWFSFE

its bristles to “hear” by sensing vibrations like those from enemy moles. Since they don’t have lungs, earthworms bring oxygen into their bodies through their body surface. They don’t have eyes, but they can sense light through their skin which allows them to respond to light. Every earthworm has both male and female body parts, but it takes two worms to mate to produce eggs. Next time you’re digging in the earth, take a closer look at this wiggly wonder. Don’t worry, earthworms don’t bite! Nancarrow, Loren and Janet Hogan Taylor. The Worm Book: The Complete Guide to Worms in Your Garden. Berkeley, CA: Ten Speed, 1998. Print. Llewellyn, Claire, Barrie Watts, and Dave Burroughs. Earthworms. New York: F. Watts, 2002. Print.

YOU’LL NEED: Paper Plates Gummy Worms Whipped Cream HOW TO: 1 Give each child a plate with 3 gummy worms covered in whipped cream. 2 Give each child a second empty plate. 3 The fun begins with the start of “Go!” Each child only uses her face to dig for worms and move them with her mouth to the empty plate. No hands allowed! 4 The first person to move all of the worms is the winner.

Did You Know?

Did you know that you can buy Earthworm Castings from Encap at Bucks Country Gardens? Castings are the waste or excrement of earthworms… a polite name for worm poop! Castings are rich in nutrients needed by plants and are also food for other beneficial microorganisms in the garden. Healthy soil is the key to healthy plants.

What do you get if you cross a worm and a young goat? A dirty kid!

History-Making

Worms

Famous scientist Charles Darwin said of the earthworm: “It may be doubted whether there are many other animals in the world which have played so important a part in the history of the world.”
