Welcome... We’re back! …the holiday edition of Picket Fences that is! We took a break last year and published a little “Christmas Look Book” with tons of great ideas for holiday decorating and gift giving. Lots of you thought it was very nice but it was no Picket Fences and I know a bunch of us here at Bucks Country Gardens agreed. It’s a big job to create and publish a magazine in-house, but 17 issues later must mean it’s worth all the hard work. We hope you enjoy it! Within a few weeks, I will celebrate my 60th birthday. A few of my best friends and their families helped me and a bunch of my fraternity brothers celebrate that milestone this summer. Actually, 60 of us spent a week at Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia yucking it up and telling stories about the good ol’ days. The main topic of discussion wasn’t politics, identity theft, investment strategy or even Penn State football. It was the “R” word…RETIREMENT. Four are already retired, five are no more than a few years away and the other six might work another five years or so. So where does that leave me? I’ve worked my entire life–from the time I was old enough to ride a bike and pedal greeting cards and vegetable seeds to all my neighbors. I mowed cemeteries before I was out of grade school and worked on a chicken farm to buy my own car at age 16. During college, I worked every summer and every break in a brass

foundry to have spending money. After graduation, I went straight to work, never going home or even attending graduation ceremonies…sorry Mom. With the exception of a winter on unemployment in 1979, I’ve worked every chance I’ve had for almost 50 years.

Retirement for me will not be a day on the calendar like it is for most of my friends. It will be a transition; one I’ve already begun. I started taking off Saturdays more often a few years ago and I just began scheduling Fridays off for the rest of the year. This winter, I might even take a three-week vacation without a firm return date. In a few years, that might bump up to a couple months. A few years after, that I might take a full month in the summer, too! What I can’t see is the day when I’m fully retired from Bucks Country Gardens–but I also promise I won’t hang around long after it’s time to go. You see, this place operates just fine without me…most of the time. I think my real value to the company is that intangible of helping things move smoothly. A little coddling here, a little pushing there...and some creative thinking and risk taking only the owner is willing to assume. And of course, maintaining wonderful relationships with lots of you. We–as in YOU and I–are blessed to have a tremendous team here at Bucks Country Gardens who make it happen all day, every day. Hopefully, they will keep you coming back…and give me the freedom to go away.

Lawn & Garden Care 6 Essential Products for Fall

... Lawn Care ... Fall is the best time to fertilize your lawn. Cool-season grasses, such as bluegrass, fescue and ryegrass, respond well to feeding in early September and again in late fall (late October or November). It helps them green up earlier and look better in the spring. Use Espoma Lawn Food for all seasons feeding. It is enhanced with Bio-tone microbes to nurture your grass, and it contains non-staining iron. Most importantly, it is safe to use around kids and pets.

... Pond Care ...

Lawns and gardens need maintenance all year long, not just in the spring and summer. Here are some timely tips to help you prepare for the upcoming cold and dormant winter months.

... Plant Care ... PERENNIALS Perennials need to be cut down, divided and fertilized at this time. Use Espoma Plant-tone, which is an organic fertilizer, to keep your plants happy and healthy during the upcoming winter months. TREES & SHRUBS Trees and shrubs should be pruned during the cooler temperatures to avoid burning. Feed your deciduous trees and shrubs with Espoma Plant-tone. An application of Espoma Hollytone to all acid-loving evergreens and shrubs goes a long way in the garden.

8

EVERGREEN TREES & SHRUBS Bonide Wilt Stop is an anti-transpirant plant protector that reduces moisture loss when the plants are under stress caused by winter elements such as cold temperatures and windy conditions. It prevents winterkill, windburn, sunscald, salt damage and drying out. We recommend two applications per season.

FISH FOOD Once pond water temperatures fall below 60 degrees, switch your fish to a wheat germbased food that is easier for them to digest. Try Tetra Pond Spring and Fall Diet Food, but remember, you should stop feeding your fish completely when pond temperatures are below 50 degrees because their metabolism automatically slows down when the temperature drops. POND CLEAN-UP After the first frost, discard tropical and annual pond plants. Also, prune back hardy perennials in your pond. After pruning, clean out any leaves that may have fallen into your pond and then cover it with netting to keep your water clean during the chilly winter months. POND WATER Use Microbe-Lift Autumn/Winter Prep to stabilize the pond water’s biological activity, even in water temperatures of 40 degrees. It reduces buildup of dead leaves and organic sediment all winter long, making it healthier environment in the spring.

X

We tend to think of spring and summer as the ‘gardening’ months. However, it is important that we take care of our plants, lawns and ponds during the cooler months for our landscapes to flourish during the spring and summer. To obtain plant specific care sheets or to ask our experts your garden questions, visit buckscountrygardens.com/ask-an-expert.

Cold Weather is Just Around the Corner

PREPARE YOU R PLANTS TODAY! Let’s start by saying–

Mother Nature was not very kind to us during the last two winters. If you remember correctly, they were very snowy, very icy and very cold. Many of us had either lost plants due to the harsh winter conditions, or by hungry animals desperate for a meal. One lesson learned: it is always better to do a preventative treatment to your trees and shrubs than a curative one. To be sure that you protect your valuable landscape from the winter, here are a few products that are needed to do it yourself, or you can leave the dirty work to the experts! New this year, we are providing winterizing services.

D IY P RO D UC TS WINTERIZE PLANTS, SHRUBS & TREES Wilt Stop is a natural nontoxic product derived from the resin of pine trees. The natural film protects plants from the harsh winter winds and cold air. Spray in the late fall when temperatures are above freezing. Our experts recommend two applications: one in fall and one in winter.

As the weather begins to dramatically cool, wrap your plants in either burlap (available in assorted sizes) or a shrub jacket (available on a roll in various sizes) to protect against deer browse. These products will also help with the damage caused by road salt, frost and frigid temperatures.

OU R S ER V I CES { L E T US D O I T!} While some of these products may seem a bit confusing, or the process may be daunting, or you may not be a DIY-er, do not panic! At Bucks Country Gardens, we are here to help. WINTERIZE PLANTS, SHRUBS & TREES AND CURB DEER & ANIMAL BROWSE For the first year ever, we are offering Winterizing Services performed by our Landscape Department. Our design experts will come to your home, evaluate the winter problems that may affect you and apply these products in the proper manner. We generally start winterizing applications and projects around Thanksgiving when the temperatures are about 40 degrees. Of course, the start date is weather dependent. Contact us today at 215.766.7800 for a FREE site consultation by one of our designers, and get your landscape winterized before it’s too late! Nancy McIlvaine, Gardening Geoff Simpson, Landscape & Facilities

11

Liquid Fence is a scent deterrent. Deer and other critters are repelled just by the smell so they won’t turn their noses to your roses! The spray should be applied once when the plants are dry, a week later and then monthly applications should continue.

Deer Netting, a lightweight plastic covering, is also avail-able and a great option if you prefer a non-chemical treatment.

buckscountrygardens.com

CURB DEER & ANIMAL BROWSE Ever go out in the morning and notice that all of the leaves and bottom branches are missing from your favorite shrub? Well, we have a few products to help with those hungry deer.

If you’re not a fan of sprays, try a granular formula, Deer Scram, and protect your flowerbeds for up to 100 days. Deer Scam is organic and long lasting, even during snow and rain accumulation.

Winter Care Wild x

The Café Window Bird Feeder is great for entertaining small children or for bird-loving adults. It suction cups right to a window for clear visibility. There is a seed reservoir that slides out for easy filling and cleaning, and seed ports allow for easy flow of various seed blends.

If your backyard is anything like mine, it is buzzing with squirrels and an abundance of other small critters. Try the Squirrel Buster, for it is chew proof and durable. Both perching and clinging birds love this feeder. Looking for more of a statement piece? Audubon Coppertop Lantern Feeder is durable and decorative, with a classic look. Plus, it’s easy to fill and clean.

By providing a few essential elements, winter can be the most enjoyable and active bird watching season for bird lovers everywhere. Food, shelter and water are the secrets to attracting them, and more importantly, enticing them to stay!

Bird Food Although they are covered in an abundance of feathers, birds require a higher calorie and fat diet during the colder months. Knowing which birds stay in our region and don’t fly south for the winter, you can better gauge which seed to fill up your feeders with. This will keep them fuller, warmer and healthier. Black Oil Sunflower Seed is a great overall seed to offer in the winter. The calorie content is double than that of striped sunflower and smaller shells, plus it has a high fat content. A popular choice among the birds are Suet Cakes. With various flavors like Nutty Butter, Orange Essence and a Superior Blend, you are sure to have the birds coming back for more. This is a high energy, pure fat substance that is irreplaceable in the winter when insects are hard to find. For small finches, put out Nyjer (thistle) seed. This seed is vital to attracting small colorful birds to your yard. If you’re looking to attract a large variety of wild birds, then the Mr. Bird Bugs, Nuts & Fruit seed cylinder is the answer. It is loaded with mealworms, tree nuts, pecans, peanuts, raisins and so much more. What more could birds ask for?

Bird Feeders

12

Choosing a bird feeder can be overwhelming due to a number of them lining the shelves. Here are a few of our favorites. If you chose one of the many tasty varieties of the Mr. Bird Seed Cylinders, pair it with a Mr. Bird EZ Feeder. It is lightweight and your seed cylinder will fit perfectly. Large perches for larger birds, such as cardinals, are built in so they can settle and chow down for a while. Think about how cool the bright red beauty will look against a snow-covered field!

The placement of your feeder can also determine how many birds come to visit it. Feeders that are in a quiet location in your yard tend to have more birds that flock to it than feeders in locations with much ruckus. Remember, these birds need to feel safe to come back and stay.

Bird Houses Just like you and I, birds need a place to call home. They need to feel safe and out of harms way. Birdhouses come in various shapes, sizes, make and colors. Choosing the right birdhouse all depends on what kind of birds your looking to house and how many. If you’re looking for a unique and quirky house for many birds, try Borderline Design Houses. Made from recycled products, fences, doorknobs, horseshoes and more, this is for sure a fun and cool house! Edisonville Woodshop Houses are also a nice choice. They have a copper top and is roomy enough for our feathered friends. This truly is an element of beauty for your landscape. To see birds up close, try our Mr. Bird Seed Houses. The wooden structure is covered with seeds, for a two-in-one deal! Birds can feed and nest in the same spot. If you have a soft spot for birds, and like to spoil them like some of us like to spoil our pups, try a tasty treat for your feathered friends. Simply hang from a tree or hook and watch them flutter their feathers with joy. Choose from Frosty Snowman or a variety of Christmas Shapes. Don’t forget! Birds need a source of water in addition to food and a safe place to perch. While not all birds visit feeders, water is essential to their survival of winter. Place your birdbath in a sunny area to keep the water from freezing. If the winter temperatures are too cold for the warmth of the sun, we have a Birdbath De-Icer to keep the water from freezing. If you can provide wild birds with these few essential elements, they will sing a happy tune for you during the winter months, and many months after! Nancy McIlvaine, Gardening

How to: Winter Care for Pots & Containers Empty Container Care It is best to store all containers indoors during the winter months to ensure longevity. If this cannot be done, then here are some particulars to keep in mind when dealing with different types of pots: Cast Iron, Fiber Clay, Wood, Non-Porous Plastic, Polyurethane Pots These all can be safely left outdoors over the winter. Consider their placement: winter winds can be strong and a knocked-over pot can easily crack. Cast Stone, Ceramic, Glass & Glazed Clay Pots It is best to invert them, remove any saucers and get them off the ground. Use bricks, pot feet, pieces of wood, or Down Under Plant Stands. Group them together and place them along a southfacing wall and, if possible, under an overhang. Additionally, you can cover them with a waterproof tarp to prevent snow from accumulating on them. Terracotta Pots They are likely to crack when temperatures fall below freezing.

Potted Container Care If you have perennials, shrubs or trees in containers and wish to overwinter them, you will want to protect the roots of your plants. You can protect your plants by moving the container close to your house for additional warmth or by wrapping the pot with either burlap, bubble wrap or cardboard. I have hollies, ninebark, switch grass and hardy hibiscus in pots, which I place between my attached shed and heat pump and they survive beautifully, even in our cold Pennsylvania winters. The red switch grass is going on its sixth year in its original plastic pot. I place it in a sunny location in the back of my yard in the spring and summer months. In the fall, it takes its rightful place in the front yard amid my fall display.

16

Potted container gardens are meant to be enjoyed year after year. When the proper precautions are taken through seasonal changes, your favorite containers will continue to soak up the admiration! Marilyn Fanning, Greenhouse Design & Sales

Plant Spring-Blooming Blubs in Your Winter Container Gardens If you, like many of us, plant greens in outside containers during the winter, why not try something new and exciting this year? Add a few spring- blooming blubs to your pots and planters before adding your fall and winter greens. Come spring, enjoy a refreshing breath of new life without any work to be done! Place the bulbs below the potting surface, plant them close together and to the depth suggested on your package. Be sure to add bulb food during this process. You can mix different varieties of bulbs; even overlap planting levels, being careful not to plant one bulb on top of the other and paying attention to blooming time and height. You will have a better chance of success if your container is close to your house or in a protected area. This will give your containers an additional source of heat. How fun would it be to see some bright, bold blooms popping up in early spring among the greens? I am game! And, once you are ready to repot, you can add the bulbs to your flowerbeds.

Let Us Do the Dirty Work: Ready-to-Go & Custom Festive Winter Container Gardens The holidays are just around the corner, and family and friends will be arriving at our homes before we know it. The fall mums are practically out of bloom, and the planters at the front door look sad indeed; but what can be put into a planter at this chilly time of year? Our solution to this problem is a festive, decorative greens planter–made by us, the same staff that put together your spring and summer flowering planters! Starting with a mixture of fresh-cut evergreens, we carefully arranged them in plastic containers and then combine them with a wide array of berries, colored or glittered branches and pine cones. This fantastic finished planter will last well into late winter or early spring, as many of our returning customers have told us! Our plastic containers can simply be placed by the front door or even inserted into urns or large decorative pots for a finished look.

For custom planters, we simply request that you place your order by the third week in November to be assured of receiving your containers by early December to enjoy for the Christmas Season! Visit any one of our Greenhouse Designers for pricing and assistance.

PROTECT YOUR PETS:

KEEP HOLIDAY CHOCOLATES UNDER LOCK & KEY! Chocolate is delicious, and most dogs feel the same way; but unfortunately, ingesting chocolate can cause your dog to become very sick. During the holidays, your pooch is most likely to come in contact with these sweet treats. So, here are just a few things to keep in mind and to be aware of this holiday season. The ingredient in chocolate that causes toxicity in dogs is called theobromine and is closely related to caffeine. The amount of theobromine in chocolate correlates with how much chocolate liquor is in the product. The liquor is derived at the beginning of the chocolate-making process by harvesting the liquid from ground cacao beans. Because of the chocolate liquor content, baking chocolate has the most theobromine in it, followed by semi-sweet, dark, and then milk chocolate. Since dogs cannot metabolize theobromine as quickly as humans can, you can see why this is a problem for our favorite four legged friends!

Signs of chocolate toxicity in your pooch can range from gastrointestinal unsettledness to nervous system or cardiac dysfunction. Large, untreated ingestions may also result in death. Gastrointestinal signs can include vomiting, diarrhea, inappetence or abdominal pain, and can progress to a more serious inflammation of the pancreas called pancreatitis. Neurologic and cardiovascular signs include restlessness/ agitation, twitching, panting, high heart rate and high blood pressure. More severe ingestions can cause seizures. If your dog has recently ingested chocolate, contact your veterinarian and the Poison Control Center immediately. Recent ingestions may only require making your dog vomit. If the ingestion was not recent, your dog may require hospitalization to treat gastrointestinal, neurologic or cardiovascular side effects. As with any toxin ingestion, prompt recognition and therapy are the keys to successful treatment! Keep those sweet treats away from your dogs this holiday season–wyou enjoy them instead! I ’m Dreaming of

an Italian Christmas

Escarole Soup

Growing up in an Italian-American household I never thought much of how ‘we’ did things. Thanksgiving was never just a delicious roasted turkey; I mean we always had turkey, but only after the antipasto, soup and pasta courses. Of course, the sides included all the traditional ‘American’ favorites, but the broccoli di rabe, cippolini onions and fried peppers were never far behind.

Haring Brothers, Inc country butcher shop

Now that I’m a mom raising a ‘secondgeneration’ of Italian-Americans, I want to pass along as much of our rich heritage, tradition, culture and love as I can. Much of our of culture is rallied around food, but if you delve deeper you’ll discover that food is much more than what someone may call ‘just a gluttonous indulgence.’ It’s a togetherness of preparing the food together, of canning and preserving the harvest of the summer and fall together, of sitting down together, of breaking bread together and it being so delicious that everyone lingers longer. That’s the magic.

Ricotta Cookies

I’m still learning the process of planting and growing, reaping and harvesting, canning and preserving; but I honestly wonder how anyone has time to juggle all of that in this day and age. I will continue in the best way I can.

This past Christmas, I felt compelled to interview my parents and capture it on film. From that interview, I learned how they celebrated Christmas where they come from in Calabria (Southern Italy). I was surprised to hear how they decorated their Christmas tree, which was really just a large branch from an olive tree, bay leaf bush or anything they could find that was green. The decorations were homemade of course, and mostly consisted of things from nature like pine cones, cinnamon sticks, fresh oranges and dried figs. They would save foil, fancy paper and ribbons during the year and use that on the tree as well. Candy was sparse but if they had it, then that too would go on the tree.

Candied Orange Ornament

Feeling inspired by their stories, I decided to surprise them with a Christmas tree that was reminiscent of their childhood in Italy. I tried to use the same items they did but put my own twist on it. I decided on a combo of homemade ornaments (candied orange slices on satin ribbon, cut-out cookies, sheet music paper cones, dried fig and bay leaf wreaths and cinnamon stick stars) and I couldn’t resist a few store bought mouth blown glass beauties (espresso maker, cannoli, Parmigiano, panettone). All in all, our “Dreaming of an Italian Christmas Tree” was a success, but most importantly it served as a glimpse into our family’s history, one that I want to pass along for generations to come.
