Fall is more my speed. I like the cool nights and temperate days. I like the warm colors of autumn leaves and the blue and white of Penn State football. I like the smell of fallen leaves and taste of tailgate barbeque. I like planting in the fall…and I really like seeing you back in the garden center again! This year, there’s a whole lot more to come back to: Harvest Days at Bucks Country Gardens – Now through October 31! Enjoy Hay Rides, a Pumpkin Patch and a 5-acre Corn Maze. There’s Pumpkin Painting and Face Painting, Pumpkin Bowling and Pumpkin Corn Hole, a Straw Bale Maze and a Giant Straw Bale Playground, Pumpkin Sling Shots and Pumpkin Putt-Putt and lots more. If that’s not enough, every weekend is planned with some very special features: from giant tractors to chainsaw carvers, a caricature artist to pet photos, pony rides to a petting zoo, country bands to accordion players. If all that action makes you hungry and thirsty, you’ll be glad to know we’ve teamed up with Tabora Farms, Bechtold Orchards and Mad Princess Brewing to keep us stocked with fresh baked goods, cold apple cider and a couple of IPA’s to go along with our Bucks Country Gardens hotdogs, popcorn and munchies. All of this for free? Well, not quite. The food, drink, pumpkins, pet photos and caricatures are a là carte. Everything else – the music, the pumpkin sling shots, kids’ games – is included in your admission price of $10 weekdays and $15 weekends. Even better, there are lots of discount coupons floating around…might even be one in this magazine.

Really, it is!
“Fall is for Planting” is more than a determined gardener’s adage or an attempt to fill fall with color. Yes, it is when life fades and colors change, but there is a greater purpose to fall: it’s when Mother Nature plants. It’s so easy to get wrapped up in the developed beauty before our eyes, that we forget there is an essential, nutritional foundation that must be nourished. Fall is all about the root growth, the perfect order–when it is warm enough for the roots to grow, but cool enough that there are fewer chances of heat complications. For lawns, trees and shrubs, and spring bulbs, it’s not just an opportunity to garden, it is the time to plant.

Cool-season grasses enjoy feeding in early September and late November. Doing so provides early greening to kick-start your spring lawn with health and vigor. You can rid yourself of any weeds under the safety of cooler air. It’s also the best time to repair dead patches before warm season stress can counteract your hard work. Finally, there is always the option to work a top dressing into a lawn after aerating. To achieve any of these solutions for fall care, see one of our horticulturists in the garden center or give us a call.
Similar to your lawn, it is appropriate to plant trees and shrubs in the fall for proper root growth. That cool air will stimulate root growth alongside the warm soil. There are lots of deciduous trees and shrubs available at our garden center. Plus, there are different options specifically for the fall if you want a shrub or tree with character. A favorite in northern regions like ours is the Viburnum ‘Blue Muffin’. It is a versatile shrub that provides blue berries in the late summer and fall and attracts birds. Other BCG favorites include Winterberry Holly, Maple trees, and Burning Bush – ideal candidates as their characteristics compliment both fall color and planting. For more recommendations of trees and shrubs with great fall color, be sure to check out our article on page 28.
Spring Bulbs For anyone who wants the last chilly breath of winter to lead into spring flowering plants, there are colorful choices to plant in the fall to get the job done. Lilies bring a fresh perspective to winter’s passing as they’re planted in September to midOctober. Other spectacular bulbs such as tulips, hyacinth, anemone, and crocus are very cold tolerant while providing the palette of an autumn sunset. Ironically, while bulbs are commonly associated as a sign of spring, fall is the time to plant them for spring blooms. Just when it seems like we have everything figured out, there’s exceptions and new knowledge to be found during the changing seasons. So, say it proudly: “Fall is for Planting.”

Come autumn, grass grows so gloriously slow that it’s hardly even thought about. Who needs to worry about lawn care or mowing? It obviously needs less care! Wrong. Lawn care is just as vital in the fall and some would argue more so. Think of it as hibernation: the grass needs to fill up with an abundance of nutrients, moisture, and energy to make it through winter.

Road Trip! Traveling by Car with Your Pet Will you be traveling with your pet this holiday season? Keep these tips in mind for a safe and enjoyable journey.
frigerator, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death. Additionally, your pet can become a target for theft.
• Keep your pets safe and secure in a wellventilated crate or carrier. Make sure it’s large enough so that your pet can stand, sit, lie down or turn around.
• Stop frequently to allow your pet to exercise and eliminate. Never permit your pet to leave the car without a collar, ID tag, and leash.
• Dogs who enjoy car travel don’t have to be confined to a carrier if your vehicle has a restraining harness. Most pet supply shops carry a wide range of doggie travel harnesses that buckle into most standard seat belts. Secure them in the backseat or back of a vehicle. Never transport a pet in the back of an open pickup truck!
• Your pet’s travel-feeding schedule should start with a light meal three to four hours prior to departure. Don’t feed your furry friend in a moving vehicle—even if it is a long drive.
• Because most cats are not as comfortable traveling in cars, for their own safety as well as yours, put them in a carrier. Restrain the carrier as well.
• Don’t allow your pet to ride with its head outside the window. This can subject them to ear/eye damage, lung infections, and flying debris could injure them.
• Get your pet used to the carrier in your home before your trip. Then, take them on short drives first,DAMC_Ad_7.5x5_horiz.pdf gradually lengthening time spent 1 8/30/16 in the car. This can reduce anxiety and stress.
Recipe for Success
• Never leave your pet unattended in a parked car. On a hot day, even with the windows open, 9:28 PM a parked automobile can become a furnace. In cold weather, a car can act as a re-
• Don’t forget your pet’s travel kit. It should include food and water dishes, bedding, litter and litter box, leash, collar and tags, grooming supplies, any necessary medications, first-aid kit and drinking water. • Before going on any trip, schedule an examination with your veterinarian. This ensures that all required vaccinations will be up-todate and you can receive a health certificate. If you’re traveling across state lines bring these records with you. • Remember that in unfamiliar surroundings, your pet’s appetite, energy, and disposition may change. Visit a local veterinarian if you are concerned about any physical or behavioral changes. Trisha Kolterman-Hill, CVT

Companion Planting with Mums cool weather, so as it gets colder, they get even better! As the temperature drops, the white, pink, or red color of the cabbage or kale intensifies.
Chrysanthemums…the quintessential plant of the fall season! They are often a popular choice amongst gardeners to fill landscape beds and container gardens. As the summer annuals fade away, mums are a great choice to add the bright, bold autumnal colors of the season (red, yellow, rust, orange, white, and purple) to your garden. Mums nicely fill the voids in the garden beds that used to accommodate the summer annuals, which have winded down for the season. Planted alone, mums create a classic look. However, pair the following annuals and perennials and you will have a fall display in your garden that’s anything but ordinary.
Ornamental Peppers Unique and fun ornamental peppers add a spicy flare. They bear colorful fruit in bright fall colors, such as red, orange, yellow, and purple. Peppers come in many shapes and sizes that pair well with mums in the landscape and they will look exceptionally well together in containers on your patio or deck.
16
Ornamental Grasses Mums and Ornamental Grass are two fall staples that belong in your garden this season. This pairing personifies the essence of fall. The grass provides just the right amount of movement and texture against the rounded mums. Smaller growing grass varieties, such as ‘Dwarf Hameln’ Fountain grass, work well in the perennial beds, while Carex varieties and other one gallonsized grasses are perfect for patio pots.
The colors of nature in the fall…does it get any better? From the leaves, to mums, to pumpkins and gourds, the colors can be breathtaking. As I walk past the pumpkin patch at the garden center, I often stop to look and think of creative ways to use some of our pumpkins. Here are a few ideas to try:
Pumpkins and Gourds Pumpkins and Gourds partnered with mums are another easy way to create a fall-inspired display on your front porch. Choose different sized pumpkins and uniquely shaped gourds and place them together, even stacked, to create an interesting display. Mums can then be arranged or tucked around them. Mini pumpkins and gourds are great for adding to the fronts of planters. It does not take much to make an amazing, inspiring fall display: use grasses, mums, ornamental peppers, pansies, or some mini pumpkins or little gourds to create the ideal fall planter or flower bed!
becky jones, greenhouse manager
Succulent Pumpkins This project, perfect for all skill levels, incorporates succulents and pumpkins, creating wonderful living dècor pieces that can last well into Thanksgiving. Attach moss to the top of the pumpkin with spray adhesive. Do not cut into the pumpkin. Then, add succulents to the moss with a hot glue gun. Yes, hot glue, it works—trust me! Place your pumpkin in bright, indirect light and spray plants with water about once a week. When your pumpkin eventually starts to rot, slice off the top as close to the moss as possible, and place it in a pot on top of cactus soil. The succulents will root through the moss into the soil. Silk & Vine Pumpkins Another fun project is decorating pumpkins with silk flowers and vines. Place a few silk mums and grape vines around a pumpkin. Then, pierce the pumpkin on a slight angle, just wide and deep enough to attach the silks and vine. Decorate around the entire pumpkin for a lovely centerpiece. Painted Pumpkins An elegant and simple way to decorate your mantle with pumpkins is by spray painting them in metallic gold or silver paint. These color selections will also allow you to display them through the Christmas holidays, too! Or, try a black acrylic spray paint on a large pumpkin. Then, with a different color, paint your initials or street number and place it by your front door or mailbox. Keep in mind that if you cut or pierce your pumpkin, it will not last as long as one that hasn’t been cut. Enjoy the fall season and have fun with those pumpkins!
marilyn fanning, greenhouse design & sales
17
Ornamental Cabbage and Kale Cabbage and kale add great architectural elements to the landscape. Smooth cabbage leaves or ruffled kale leaves create a great accent planted next to mums. They perform best in
Coral Bells Heuchera, also known as Coral Bells, is another fall favorite to plant. This perennial is most note-worthy for its many colors and variation of foliage ranging from purples, oranges, reds, greens, and more. They add the perfect amount of fall-like hues and texture against mums planted in the landscape or containers.
You Must Try!

Pansies Create an encore performance with pansies in the fall. These cool season annuals bloom right through frost and well into freezing temperatures making them an excellent choice to accompany mums. Choose from a rainbow of colors such as rich blues and purples, to bright yellows and oranges, or even a dramatic, dark purple-black and incorporate these perky pansies with your mum display.
Sedums Sedums, with their succulentlike foliage, are attractive fall blooming perennials. Since they come in an array of different varieties, colors, sizes, and textures, they give a distinct presence in the garden. Cluster a tall variety of sedum behind a row of mums or opt for lower growing varieties to plant as a border in front.

At Bucks Country Gardens, we’re constantly on the lookout for ways to grow business while promoting a community. Our guests and customers are who help us be who we are. Lawn Care & Tree Care
As farming and gardening develop their own business identities, products, and solutions, it’s only natural that they evolve as readily as other businesses do. Trends and new ideas sweep them up like seeds to new territory. Often, it seems agribusiness has led to agritourism for smaller outfits, where agricultural operations are meant to bring visitors to farms, ranches, centers, or land. We’re right in the middle of watching agribusinesses grow in such a way in Bucks County. How much a business leans towards agribusiness or agritourism is irrelevant. What we’re experiencing now is how they are becoming one and the same for some groups.
fostering a community as they host community events and use their land and resources for the arts, unique productions, and retail destinations, sources for natural or rustic products that may not be readily available. Some businesses may encompass all of the above, hosting their own festivals, offering landscaping services, and selling internal and external product. The point is: opportunities are only limited by an agribusiness’ creativity. More often than not, they have the land, resources, contacts, and community around them to do great things—it’s just a matter of how they do it.

Agribusiness seems to have taken on new meaning in recent years. A simple definition is “farming thought of as a large business” or the “business of agricultural production”. By nature, this is very broad. One might think that means it’s an industry or business focused on farm equipment, supplies, processing, storage, distribution or even retail, but it is becoming much more.
September 17 & 18 • recap On Saturday the 17th, Harvest Days and the Garden Center closed a bit early as Bucks Country Gardens hosted a private fund-raising event for the Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce, the Red Ball Gala. Sunday, we were back in full swing! Quakertown chainsaw carver John Snyder illustrated his creative talents throughout the day with chainsaw weilding demos of art.
Harvest Days at Bucks Country Gardens is in full swing from now thru October 31. Enjoy family fun for all ages: corn maze, hayrides, pumpkin slingshot, pumpkin patch, face painting, games, scavenger hunts, baked goods from Tabora Farm & Orchard, food, beverages, and more. September 10 & 11 • recap In case you missed our opening weekend, we had an awesome tree spade from American Treescapes and a giant tractor from Ken Jan Farm on display, complete with demos throughout each day! Additionally, we had caricature artist Barbara Thornton on site to offer caricatures. She is a classically trained artist who studied at North Texas State University and The Atlanta Georgia College of Art. An artist of many mediums, her talent has allowed her to work all over North America for corporate clients, while doing local oil portraits. She even owned and operated the quick sketch concession at Sesame Place for ten years! If you missed her then, don’t worry, she’ll be back again October 16th! The best part? She can work from photos, too!
October 1 & 2
Delight in the sights, sounds and tastes of our Oktoberfest themed weekend (German food and beverages) with Grammy award-nominated accordion player, Walt Groller. Groller was vital for bringing Musikfest to Lehigh Valley in 1984 and he has been a musician for 71 years. He was presented the Austrian Decoration of Merit in Gold in 1990, an award specifically given in recognition of those who help preserve Austrian culture. In 1995, he received the Polka News Network’s “Lifetime Polka Music Award.” See and hear the talents of this brilliant musician.

town needed a solution to their outdoor living space that resides above the neighboring property. Walpole Outdoors’ horizontal/vertical lattice fence serves both as a privacy screen and safety railing on the above-ground deck while allowing
of landscaping that complimented the house while maintaining a “natural” look. The use of mass color and texture created a tasteful landscape while allowing for areas for the clients’ children and a future swimming pool. Various species of trees and hardy shrubs create a more “natural” setting in the landscape and provides rear yard privacy. d This client’s new home had an older
patio with unusable spaces, areas that have buckled, and limited plantings. They wanted a space with several “rooms” for dining, cooking, lounging, and full perennial plantings to give color all season long. A drainage issue is remedied with a dry stream bed with strategically placed larger boulders. Lighting and raised boxes to grow veggies and fruit with their children provide the final touches to their outdoor living space.
When these clients, who just moved from Walpole, Massachusetts, visited the garden center to upgrade their existing mailbox, they knew exactly what to get. They chose–and we installed–Walpole Outdoors’ St. Andrews mailpost with a copper mailbox, a Hammond lantern post with an Augusta lantern and an oval address sign. To complete the entrance area, the Oyster bay curved accent fence was also installed. Posts and fence are made from AZEK, a low maintenance cellular pvc, and are finished in white. f As per the homeowners’ vision,
the front plantings are minimal with a southwestern feel to pair with an art piece the clients have in the front beds. Stone beds, sedum, and grasses pick up the southwestern style with some natives mixed in to remind us we are still living in the lovely mid-atlantic. g The client was a recent transplant from the west coast and was looking for a prominent entry courtyard common to the California properties they were familiar with. This was created through
the use of mixed plantings with the fountain serving as the focal point of the entire entrance sequence. Native shrubs and perennials helped tie the new area into the surrounding woodland setting. A mixture of concrete pavers, brick, mortared stone accent walls and locally sourced pea gravel helped create the framework for a seamless transition from the outdoor space into their quaint, cottage-style home.
unwanted guests such as deer, rabbits, and their friends. This fence is 4’ tall and posts are 5.5” square with routed edges and colonial caps. Horizontal rails are mortised into posts. All fence components are constructed with AZEK, a low maintenance cellular pvc, and painted white, lasting a lifetime.
h Is your back yard an inspiration for your creative side? This artist’s studio and colorful perennial garden is all that and more. What a wonderful garden to enjoy whether relaxing in the hammock or simply strolling through on your way to creating another masterpiece.

Even the best plans need an occasional modification. This Paper Bark Maple was the perfect garden-sized tree for the small space at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church…until a new building needed the same space. The hand dug 144” root ball will assure a successful move to a new home where it will be the perfect specimen tree once again. i Who needs a fireplace by the pool anyway? As it turns out,
lots of us enjoy a little time by the fire even on warm summer afternoons. And when summer turns to fall that fire is a welcome friend almost anytime as temperatures cool.
2 1 Showy Shrubs & Trees
with Fabulous Fall Color for your garden Before we retreat into our homes for the cold months coming ahead, let’s savor the vibrant bursts of color from the fall foliage of several shrubs and trees known for putting on a brilliant autumn show. Some of the same plants that provide us with spectacular spring flowers also pack a punch of fall color. For others, the fall season is truly their time to stand out.
crape myrtle
Virginia Sweetspire japanese maple
chanticleer pear
The best landscapes should include something of interest in each season of the year. If your yard lacks some color in the fall, then this dazzling list of trees and shrubs is sure to include some for you, with either stunning leaf color or vibrant berries to jazz up a late season garden.
Shrubs viburnum
october glory maple
blueberry bush persian ironwood
burning bush
dogwood
Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum) This varied group of small ornamental trees provide stunning fall color. Green types will turn yellow, orange, bronze or purple, while the red leafed maples intensify to a brilliant red.
Viburnum Avid gardeners are often big fans of this diversified group of shrubs because there is a viburnum to suit every garden need. There are several varieties that provide fabulous fall color and berries in red, yellow, blue or black.
Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia) Prized for their showy summer flowers, these smaller trees (8-20 feet) also put on a show in the fall when their leaves turn red, orange or yellow. Add in their beautiful bark and you can enjoy this tree in all seasons.
Ninebark (Physocarpus) The fall colors of this deciduous, 6-10 foot shrub range from burgundy purple, to purple red. As an added bonus it is deer resistant, drought tolerant, and adaptable to many soil conditions.
Dogwood (Cornus) Another showy spring bloomer with beautiful white flowers, the dogwood’s leaves turn red, yellow or purple for a colorful fall accent. Red fruit clusters provide an additional burst of color.
Leucothoe This native shrub is a great addition to any fall shade garden due to its reddish or bronze leaf color. An evergreen with graceful arching stems, this shrub is deer resistant. Additionally, it has bell-shaped flowers in spring.
October Glory Maple (Acer Rubrum ‘October Glory’) This maple is prized for its stunning orange/red leaf color in late autumn. At maturity it reaches 40 feet and is a beautiful shade tree with dark green leaves.
Burning Bush (Euonymus alatus) With its fiery, fluorescent, crimson color, this shrub makes you take notice. Reaching 8 feet, it is often used as a shrub hedge, accent plant, or in mass plantings.
Persian Ironwood (Parrotia persica) The Persian Ironwood is a lesser-known specimen. It has leaves of yellow, orange, and red in autumn. The exfoliating bark is jaw dropping, and peels to reveal green, white and tan patches.
Blueberry Bush (Vaccinium) A native plant well known for its early summer fruit, this is also a great choice to add fall color. Its leaves turn a beautiful red/orange color in early fall.
Chanticleer Pear (Pyrus calleryana) This upright, pyramidal, ornamental pear turns a deep reddish purple in fall. Its spring flowers are abundant white clusters. It is drought and heat tolerant and less prone to branch breakage than other pear trees.

Virginia Sweetspire (Itea) This native shrub puts on a fall color show–leaves of red, orange, and gold–persisting into the winter. The Sweetspire’s arching branches are covered with draping, fragrant white flowers in spring.

To Prune O OR O Not to Prune Roses?. tha t is the question. Whether it’s because of health or beauty, different gardeners may have their own opinion on whether or not you should prune your roses. We’re here to sink our own roots into this issue and tell you why you should. Health & Beauty Aesthetically, it will allow you to maintain an attractive shape for your roses. The overall size will be reduced while encouraging good flowering and healthy new shoots. Health goes hand-in-hand with the beauty, too, as diseased and dead stems or canes will also be removed. Best part: through these efforts, air circulation will be improved.
30
If, however, your roses or shrub roses are old with thin, spindly wood, a hard prune (severely cut back to the ground leaving 4–5 inches), will help rejuvenate weak or neglected roses. This will build a strong root system and stimulate the plant to produce new, strong canes. So, what’re you waiting for? Become your roses’ one-stop physician and beautician!

Tools For those curious about the tools of the trade, know that you may need: high quality pruning shears with both blades curved, long handled loppers, and a thick pair of puncture proof gloves — try Rose gloves that go to your elbow.
Some Final Thoughts Prune the bush back to the desired height. Additional things to consider are that established hybrid teas and floribundas will benefit from moderate pruning where they are cut to about one half of their height. Shrub Roses, such as Knockout Roses, can be pruned to shape in the fall.

It’s hard to argue against it. So, if you are sold on pruning, prune just before the plant breaks dormancy after spring’s last frost. Some gardeners wait until the Forsythia blooms in their area before they feel it is safe to prune. In the fall, it is a good idea to prune back long canes before winter winds or storms cause damage or loosen the roots.
Pruning Principles Time to be a plant doctor. Always be sure to prune dead wood back to healthy tissue — living, healthy tissue is white inside the stem. You see brown, cut further down! Cut out very thin, twiggy growth and remove stems that cross or rub together. This is where better air circulation comes into play!

A newly molted male cardinal isn’t his brightest. Many of his feathers, especially on the neck and back, are tipped with gray. During fall and winter, these tips slowly wear off, revealing more and more brilliant red. The birds reach the peak of brilliance right when they are selecting a mate. Against snow-covered conifers, it’s a feast for our eyes, too.

FELTED ANIMALS Felt is the oldest textile fabric dating as far back as 6300 BC. It is created from wool or other animal fibers that are densely matted together. Felting predates spinning, weaving or knitting, and for centuries, this non-woven fabric has been used for yurts, blankets, rugs, hats, boots, and clothing. Now, it is being used to create this adorable collection of felted animals. Hedgehogs, puppies, deer, mice and more are here to get you started on this fun, new collection.

PE Polyethylene or PE tips are the most lifelike tip option available. By molding the tip into the shape of needles, the PE tips look and feel like a real tree. PE tips are great for trees that are lightly decorated, giving them a real look that will fit in any room. PVC Polyvinyl Chloride or PVC tips are the classic material used in artificial Christmas trees. Layering and cutting the PVC creates a rounded and lifelike tip. PVC tips are great for commercial décor and heavily decorated trees. Hard Needle Hard needle tips are composed of long needles used to create the appearance of a full pine tree. The unique full tips give the tree a realistic and woodsy feel. Hard needle tips are best used with an earthy décor such as a cabin or birch themed display. PVC Hard Needle The combination of PVC and Hard needle tips is used to create a lush, full tree. The PVC and hard needle trees can usually be found adorned by pine cones helping give them a rustic and down-to-earth feel.

These trees are remarkable enough to stand on their own in any setting. Frosted Frosted tips are covered in a light dusting of a shiny iridescent material that gives the tree a fresh frosted look. Frosted tips are perfect for giving the tree a whimsical sparkle without the look of heavy snow. Flocked Flocked tips are covered in a white fluffy material that mimics the appearance of snow. Our dual color LED twig branches will add sparkling splendor to your holiday décor. Use the inside to decorate a dark corner of a room or your Christmas table. Or, use them in one of our predecorated urns on your entryway. Dual color options: amber/ white; white/multi; purple/amber/green; purple/amber/red. Each cluster consists of three branches with 60 lights.
E. Laser Lights
Outdoor lights with lasers have become very popular. This year, we are offering the traditional laser shower as well as an assortment of other colors and designs including a LED projector laser in red/green with a remote. Christmas laser lights can be used in many creative ways: Simply placing lasers closest to the base of large trees and tilting them to point up the trunk can create laser tree wraps. The closer you place the laser, the denser the laser lights will appear. What a great way to customize your outdoor decorating.

Ivy Topiaries During the holidays, we love to decorate with ribbons and bows, lights, ornaments, trees and plants. If you are looking for a formal yet whimsical idea or gift this year, why not try an ivy topiary for your home?
directly into the soil, close to the plant base. Do not let your plant sit in water. Misting the leaves once or twice a week, with lukewarm water in the morning (to allow the plant to dry out by nightfall) is helpful to create humidity. The plant can be fertilized every 4–6 weeks, taking the winter off, and again picking up with fertilizing in the spring. As the plant grows, tuck and weave any loose growing stems around the topiary frame, filling in any thin spots. Trim the stems emerging from the top and bottom of the form. Finally, don’t forget to decorate your topiary! During the holidays, we bring ivy topiaries into our greenhouse in shapes of globes, spirals, cones, trees, teddy bears, and sometimes even elephants. We decorate the topiaries with ribbons, birds, berries and Christmas balls in whites, golds, and reds, finishing with a festive holiday pot. With proper care your ivy topiary should last for years. You can change out the decorations seasonally or to suit your room or mood with ease.

Yes, your outside containers can look beautiful throughout the winter! After the colorful fall season, don’t be left with an empty container or urn sitting by your front door, waiting for spring. Simply add greens to those containers and now you’ve created a beautiful and magical winter look, one your family and friends can enjoy over the holidays. At Bucks Country Gardens, we plant a mix of evergreen boughs of white pine, frasier fir, incense cedar, port orford cedar, douglas fir, and juniper in soil. We vary the lengths and textures of the boughs to create a full and inviting design. Boxwood and/or holly can be added to the arrangement, though they are rather short lived. Winterberry and white birch twigs can be added for color. Other options include artificial berries, Christmas ornaments,
Winter Container Gardens glittered branches, bows, pinecones and birds. We plant up these greens in two different sized plastic containers that can stand alone or fit right into your empty pot sitting by that front door. We also have filler plastic pots that fit nicely into most urns, as well as hanging baskets. If you have a unique sized container and would like that planted, we can do that, too. We ask that you have any custom requests in by the 3rd week in November to ensure receiving them in early December. If you are preparing your own container, consider planting spring blubs in your container first. Plant the bulbs to the depth suggested on your package. Place them close together, but not on top of each other, and add a little bulb food. Cover them over with soil and then begin planting your greens. I tried this last year
with daffodils. In March, when I pulled my greens out—which were still alive—I had daffodils coming up. They did nicely to add height in my container. To complete the spring look, I added pansies between them. I’ll be repeating that this year, maybe with a mixture of daffodils and tulips, so that my container changes as easy as the season. Whether you have a Bucks Country Gardens created greens planter or a magnificent creation all of your own, water your planter as needed until the soil freezes and then enjoy it throughout the winter and into the spring. When friends and family visit, I guarantee they will enjoy that magical winter creation sitting by your front door.

Historically, the craft of topiary–creating a living sculpture– found its origins in ancient Roman times using the cypress tree. In the times following, it would go in and out of fashion until it became very popular in Victorian England. It was then brought to North America, specifically Williamsburg, Virginia in 1690. In the1950s and 1960s, as houseplants became popular, the craft moved indoors. Ivy topiaries are usually made from English Ivy (Hedera helix). The ivy vine is grown around a wire topiary frame. The frame adds the support and trains the ivy into a desired shape.

arrangements
Winterberry hollies occur naturally in swamps, roadside ditches and other poorly drained areas, making it a great choice for any wet area in your landscape. It also grows quite well in ordinary garden soil, but experiences the best growth and fruiting when the plant is not subjected to drought. They generally grow to be about 6–12 feet in height with a 3–12 foot spread, and are content with full sun to partial shade. Winterberry shrugs off insects and disease, making these plants virtually worry-free. Another advantage of having winterberry holly in your landscape is that it is readily available for all your holiday decorating. Instead of running from store to store to look for a fresh bunch of winterberry stems, simply step out your door and trim fresh berry branches. Stems adorned with beautiful red berries are the perfect accent for winter greens containers, fresh wreaths, or garlands. If the branches remain outdoors, they will last well into the winter. The berries provide a nice pop of color against dark green evergreen boughs and are an elegant, natural accent. They can be paired with white branches for contrast in a container, or tucked into a wreath or garland, alongside white birds, creamy clusters of dried statice, or white frosted pinecones.

Hollies are dioecious, meaning male and female flowers are produced on separate plants. In order for the female to produce berries, it must be matched with a male pollinator that blossoms during the same time. A single male plant will provide sufficient pollen for a number of females planted in the general vicinity. The nursery at Bucks Country Gardens stocks pairings that are known to be successful mates – call it arranged marriages!

In spring, delicate oval leaves emerge along its slender branches and tiny greenish-white flowers appear in June and July. Its ornamental appearance can only be described as quiet; not a showstopper, more like a wallflower. Late summer is when this plant shows courage at the big dance, ready to strut its stuff. Green berries appear along the branches of the female plant and remain until they turn red, attracting overwintering birds. In the cold, bleak landscape of winter, when most other plants have gone dormant, abundant clusters of bright red berries adorn the winterberry stems. This creates a truly spectacular show, especially against a backdrop of snow. Berries that persist until spring are a favorite of cedar waxwings. It is no longer a wallflower, surpassing the showstoppers!
