We wrestled mightily with the challenge of producing both a Fall Gardening magazine and a Christmas Gift and Decorating magazine once again. Two separate magazines, a pull-out insert, a center section feature and a Christmas-only option were all discussed, and dumped. The front/back upside-down option you are reading right now was borrowed from one of our trade publishers and although it still bothers me a bit, the double cover allows us to be relevant and timely. So if you’re a Bucks Country junkie and Picket Fences is on your coffee table for the next few months, please turn it over November 1st and it will look brand new.

Spectacular Spring! 9 Beautiful Blooming Trees Seed Starting 101
I need to say thanks for a couple very important reasons. First, you have supported our business in record numbers this year. We introduced a ton of new products, programs and promotions and I’m proud to say you told us we made good decisions. Christmas will be no exception and our team is confident you’ll like what you see more than ever. Second, you have supported us with your thoughtful compliments and words of caring when we needed them more than you know. We might be known for the stuff we sell, but it’s the people in this business that matter most to us…. and obviously to a lot of you.

Outdoor Living & Landscape Maintenance
{
Here are a few timely tips to help you prepare your gardens, water features and outdoor living spaces for the upcoming cold and dormant winter season.
Outdoor Living
Pond Closing
Deck & Patio Furniture Begin by cleaning off dirt and grime built up over the last six months or more and dry off as needed. Bring pillows and umbrellas into the house for safekeeping. Stretch heavy-duty patio covers over furniture which will stay outside during winter months. Tie the covers onto the furniture to prevent from blowing around in harsh winds. This will also keep water and snow away from the surface of the furniture.
Fall feeding of fish Continue to feed your pond fish regularly into the fall, as long as they continue to eat the food quickly– within a few minutes. Once water temperatures fall below 60º, switch to a wheat-germ based food that is easier to digest. Stop feeding completely when pond temperatures are below 50º.
Bucks Country Gardens
Chiminea Protect your chiminea against the weather with a furniture or fountain cover, or bring them inside during cold winters. Before storage, remove the sand. Then, remove the chiminea from its stand and store it on a pallet that allows for airflow–never lift it by the neck.
12
}
Water features Drain the water from fountain prior to the first freeze of the season. Remove the pump and bring it indoors. Now is a great time to clean the pump to remove any debris that may have accumulated throughout the year. Store your fountain pump in a bucket of water and keep it in a warm indoor spot to keep the gaskets from drying out. Cover your fountain with a tarp or fountain cover. Fill each fountain basin with burlap sacks, old blankets or other absorbent materials to keep condensation from accumulating and freezing inside. This prevents the fountain from cracking due to expansion and contraction of water.
{
Need help with any of these maintenance tips? We will be happy to do these tasks for you. Call us today for more information: 215.766.7800.
}
Pond Plants After the first frost, discard tropical and annual plants. Prune back dead foliage on hardy perennials with the exception of hollow stemmed plants such as Horsetails and Rushes, which may lead to rotting. Leave Water Lilies and pond plants submerged at the bottom of the pond. Marginal shelf plants can remain in their normal position.
Netting the pond Before the onset of fall leafs dropping, cover your pond with netting. Remove after all leaves have fallen off the trees and before the pond freezes. Filter & Pumps If you turn off the pump and filter for the winter, be sure to drain all plumbing. External filters, UV’s, and external pumps will need to be drained. Submersible pumps should be left in the pond or in a bucket of water in a warm place to keep the seals from drying out. Cold water holds more oxygen than warm water and the fish’s respiration is slow, thereby eliminating the need for additional circulation and aeration. The bacteria in the biological filter does not work in cold temperatures, therefore, the only reason to run the filter is to keep the bacteria alive. If you choose this method, be sure to clean the filter with pond water to eliminate good bacteria loss before starting up in the spring.
Fall Lawn Care Grass Overseeding, lime application and fertilization are best done in September. Also, consider aerating and dethatching your lawn in the fall. Lawns should be mowed to no more than 2” tall for the last cut of the season. Be sure to rake leaves up off the lawn. A final application of high nitrogen fertilizer should be applied in mid-November. Plant Care Perennials should be cut down, divided and fertilized at this time–use Espoma Plant-tone, an organic line of fertilizers. Trees and shrubs should be pruned in the cooler temperatures of fall. All evergreens and acid-loving plants will benefit from an application of Espoma Holly-tone. Deciduous trees and shrubs should be fed with Espoma Plant-tone. Don’t forget to add seasonal color and interest such as Mums, Pansies, Cabbage and Kale to extend your outdoor gardens throughout this transitional season.
Landscape Lighting Make sure your system is ready for the shorter length of daylight. Check timers for proper settings and make sure photo eyes are unobstructed by any plants and debris. Be sure all fixtures are clean and bulbs operational. Adjust the direction of lights as needed. Add to existing lighting systems or install new ones to provide highlights on plants and architectural features and to provide security. Winter plant protection & Deer-Proofing Apply a minimum of three applications of WiltProof or Wilt-Stop to evergreen plants to prevent moisture loss and leaf burn from cold winter winds. There are several effective deer-proofing products that, if used in combination, will thwart these four-legged creatures from devastating your landscape. Physical barriers, such as netting and chemical controls like Deer Scram or Deer Tech Winter Spray, will prove to be a good defense for most trees and shrubs.

8 easy tips for turning your fall green 1 2 3 4
Along with food waste, compost your leaves, grass, twigs, plant trimmings and more. Compost bins are easy to set up and requite minimal effort to produce organic, rich soil by spring. In stead of dumping bags of leaves at the curb, add it to the compost bin, ensuring the matter gets recycled directly back to the earth. Take bike rides now that temperatures are cooler and the leaves are changing. The cool fall days are the perfect time to start commuting by bike to work or school. Cleaning and adjusting your furnace annually will ensure its operating efficiency, cut back on fuel use and save you money this winter. It’s inexpensive to do and will save you hundreds of dollars in the long run. If you have a ceiling fan, reverse the direction. The fan should be run in a clockwise direction (stand under the fan and if you feel a breeze, reverse the direction so that air is being drawn upwards). This pushes the air up against the ceiling and down the walls, to gently recirculate the warm air without creating a cooling “wind chill effect.”
5
Draft blockers are foam plates that fit behind light switches and electrical outlets to reduce drafts that enter through those spaces. Get a packet of 10 for about $ 3 and install easily with just a screwdriver.
6
Give a gift that will help a child’s curiosity about nature, such as: a zoo membership, an ant/butterfly farm, science kits, a kite, a tree you plant together, live plant kits, or the garden game.
7
Instead of sending cards through the mail, send e-greetings from Hallmark.com or BlueMountain.com. Send postcards instead of envelopes to save paper or consider holiday cards that are made from recycled paper. This reduces your paper consumption and makes sending out those cards easy, economical and efficient.
8
Have an ornament-making party using materials found in nature and pretty scraps you have around the house: pine cones, flowers, cranberries, and popcorn all make festive decorations that cost little or nothing. Laura Oberdorf, Landscape Design & Sales

BCG Client Spotlight william r. schutt Chairman of the Board, MATCOR
Bill Schutt–the musician, the outdoorsman, the gardener...
“I’ve always been a bit occupied” Bill said as we sat down for lunch at the Waterwheel. Today was no different. We had scheduled our meeting weeks in advance to accommodate trips to Nantucket where Bill’s latest home renovation project consumes chunks of his time, but apparently little of his energy.
Bill credits his business success to surrounding himself with good people… rather, great people! His team of 50-60 employees represents the brightest minds and the hardest working talent he can assemble. “You find the best and you pay them.” The current growth rate of doubling the business every year is evidence he’s got it figured out.
you sleep about four hours a night, there’s “When lots of time to get things done. I’ll get plenty of rest when I’m dead. ”
I assumed it was a kick back kind of day, but soon learned he had already been to breakfast with the head of the Bucks County Symphony and was scheduled to perform with his sax quartet at the courthouse in the evening. “When you sleep about 4 hours a night, there’s lots of time to get things done. I’ll get plenty of rest when I’m dead.”
Through the years, Bill has maintained his passion for gardening, too. “There’s always another project on my list. I can’t live without a project.” I can attest to that… we’ve been working with Bill for a long time. He was a BCG customer before I was an employee. “It all started in 1977 when I bought that Blue Atlas Cedar from Dick Royer. It’s still there and doing great.” Thanks, Bill. Glad you are too. Tom Hebel, President of Bucks Country Gardens
17
Bill grew up in Abington, but decided to build his new business, MATCOR, in Doylestown, where an open market and good labor were plentiful. “Today, MATCOR could be located anywhere in the world. The name was chosen to be generic and non-American to be better accepted in the global market of corrosion prevention.” Guess you might say that’s worked fairly well. MATCOR’s clients dot the globe from North and South America to Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Asia.
always another “There’s project on my list. I can’t live without a project.” Bucks Country Gardens
That about sums it up for Bill Schutt, Chairman of the Board for MATCOR, Inc. in Doylestown. He starts early and goes all day, every day. At 16, he started his own landscape maintenance company and at 18, was borrowing money to finance the installation of public parks. No one asked him how old he was… he claims he always looked more mature than his age. After a few years in the electric business with Henkels & McCoy, Bill started another company–one he would build into an international leader.
Beyond his international business and demanding career, Bill finds time to be active personally and in our community. His hobbies include music, skiing, cabinet making, painting, auctioneering and politics. His concern for land use management led him to develop a local civic association and serve as a township supervisor. Today, Bill is an active board member of numerous non-profits with a special interest in women’s causes. I asked him if he had a favorite. “I can’t say I have one. I enjoy working with all of them… did I tell you about the mentoring I’m doing for Women in Business? It’s wonderful and I get so much more out of it than they do. And of course there’s the Mercer Museum, Planned Parenthood, A Woman’s Place, NOVA, Family Services, Morris Arboretum, the symphony, my church… I love them all.”

Fall into Winter Every autumn, nature puts on a brilliant show of color. From bright yellows to intense reds, the leaves transform, showing their rich and vibrant hues. We all hope to catch a glimpse of nature’s splendor throughout the year– with fall and winter certainly no exception. Here is a sampling of a few of our favorites during this spectacular time of year.

Montauk Daisy Once the summer flowers have come and gone, it’s the Montauk Daisy’s turn to shine. This plant flowers in the fall, anytime from early September into late October. Expect a large number of 2 to 3 inch bright white flowers with yellow centers; it sets off nicely in a background of deep green, glossy leaves. The late blooming period sets this plant apart from the traditional Shasta Daisy plus the Montauk Daisy is hardy and easy to grow.
Red Sunset Maple The Red Sunset Maple tree is considered one of the best trees for early fall color. This is a large deciduous tree that has a pyramidal form when young and becomes rounded with age. Glossy green leaves turn a brilliant orange-scarlet in fall. The Red Sunset is one of the hardiest red maple cultivars available, which makes it an excellent choice for lawn or street planting.
Heuchera ‘Marmalade’
Dragon Lady Holly Dragon Lady is a slender female holly that is exceptionally hardy and attractive. She has a distinct narrow pyramidal form with large red berries, purple stems and dark green foliage– making this holly a winner. Her leaves are small, glossy and spiny. This holly is perfect as a single specimen, flanking entry ways and focal points or grouped together to make an excellent privacy screen or hedge.
Fall is a great time for planting? In the fall, the warm soil encourages root growth so roots can continue to grow until the ground freezes. In early spring, roots begin new growth, which develop at a faster rate, then top growth begins. When summer finally arrives, the tree or shrub which was planted in the fall has had over six months to become established and is better well equipped to deal with heat and drought.

Like an open jar of marmalade, the maple-shaped leaves of this Heuchera are pale orange but also include shades of honey, amber, and even pale green. To add variation, some of the leaves are bathed in a single color while others are a fusion of hues. This selection is a terrific choice for a border, for edging, or in tubs and mixed containers. Showy in all seasons, this vigorous plant has heavy substance standing up to inclement weather. A great landscape choice which performs well in both sun and shade.

Hameln Fountain Grass Small garden spaces lend themselves well to Dwarf Fountain Grass. The graceful fountain-like plumes grow to two feet tall in round clumps and slowly change color from buff to soft pinks and light-colored maroons. Plant one, two or three grasses together to present an effective showing in small gardens as an accent or for larger areas, mass plantings are stunning. Hameln Fountain Grass also adds structure to the winter garden as well as seed for birds.

Winterberry Holly The showiest of all winter plants, this native selection has small white flowers in summer that bring large red berries in late fall and winter. As opossed to most hollies, the Winterberry Holly drops its leaves each fall. At that point, this plant really puts on an unforgettable show. After the leaves have turned yellow and have fallen off, you are left with a breathtaking view of hundreds of brightly colored berries clinging to every stem. The Winterberry Holly provides joy with magnificent color in the middle of winter.
Colorado Blue Spruce Deer-resistant and often used as a specimen or windbreaker, the Colorado Blue Spruce is a classic pyramidal choice for an outdoor Christmas tree. Their silvery-blue needles are prickly to the touch and aromatic. It prefers heavier soils, full sun, and clean cultivation. Colorado Blue Spruce trees will reach a height of six feet in eight years on a good site, when starting with a two-year-old seedling. The Blue Spruce is probably the most drought tolerant of all spruce trees. Alex Salvi, Sales Manager

Terrariums are a fun and easy way to grow plants indoors. Simply start with some clear glass containers you may already have in your house: fish bowls, large mayo or pickle jars, candy jars or glass canisters. Terrariums only need a little bit of indirect light and is best to keep it out of direct sunlight. They are self contained and need little maintenance… they basically take care of themselves. The tradition of carving scary faces into turnips and potatoes started in Ireland centuries ago. These hollowed out vegetables with burning candles inside would be placed outdoors to keep away spirits and ghosts. When the Irish immigrated to America, they continued this tradition using a native fruit they found in abundance… pumpkins! This Halloween, send pictures of your Jack O’ Lanterns to info@buckscountrygardens.com and look for your photo on display in our store!
...why leaves change their color in the Fall? The green color in the leaves is from a chemical called Chlorophyll. In the summer, trees are busy making and storing food. The shorter days of fall let the trees know that it’s time to get ready for the winter season. The leaves stop making food, causing the green color to begin to disappear. This allows other pigments like yellow, orange and red to show through in the leaf. Go outside and see how many different colors you can find on a single leaf!

limitations Driveways surround the front and side of the home leaving minimal lawn areas. The pool will be visible to guests and residents everyday of the year.
SOLUTION Locate the swimming pool immediately adjacent to the side porch allowing for a smaller pool apron and patio that can combine with the porch to accommodate large or small groups comfortably. Utilize a long narrow layout with natural Pennsylvania Bluestone coping and apron and black plaster finish to create a “water garden appearance.
Connect all gardens with a continuous pathway joining front, side and rear porches. Create year-round structure and body using boxwood hedging, accent evergreens and select large shrubs. Bring the gardens alive with perennial masses, flowering shrubs and landscape roses providing color from April through September.

Q A
Q Every spring, my Cherry Laurels have brown leaves on most of the plant. How can I stop this from happening? A Apply Wilt-Stop before Thanksgiving–this acts as a shield for the leaves in preventing moisture-loss over the winter. Apply while temperatures are above 40º. Wilt-Stop is also good to use on Rhododendrons or any other broadleaf evergreens in your yard. Apply two more times during the winter season.
Q How long do I need to water my newly planted trees/shrubs before winter? A Until the ground freezes. At a minimum, water new plantings through Thanksgiving.
When should I prune my Hydrangeas? In general, it’s best to wait until spring to prune shrubs that bloom in the summer. Wait until new growth is visible, and only cut branches that had flowers on them last year. Most of the Mophead Hydrangeas bloom on last year’s wood, so the branches without flowers this year will be the ones to bloom next year. If you cut back the entire plant you may not get any flowers at all next year, with the exception of the “Endless Summer” series.
Q
Can I do anything this fall to prevent weeds from growing in my lawn next year? A Yes. We recommend Bonide Weed Beater Complete or Espoma Weed Preventer & Lawn Food, as an organic option. Apply in early fall.
Q Until how late in the fall can I still plant perennials? A Roughly six weeks prior to ground freeze. Any time in September and early October is still safe but the later you wait, the less root growth will occur before winter. Apply 2” layer of mulch around new perennials to help keep the roots warm through winter. Be sure to water them after planting and continue watering until the ground freezes. Use B1 Rootmaster once a week for three weeks after planting to promote strong roots.
28
Bucks Country Gardens
Q What should I do with my tender, summer-flowering bulbs, corms, and tubers? A Remove them from the soil and allow to dry. Then place them into a brown paper bag with some peat moss and store in a cool, dry place where the temperature stays above 40º. Q When should I bring in my flowering tropical plants for the winter season? A Before the first frost and check them for any insects that maybe on the plant. Trim back any spent blooms and unattractive branches. Apply Safer Insecticidal Soap to ensure you don’t bring any pests inside. Then apply Bonide Houseplant Systemic every six weeks during the winter months to build the plant’s immune system against any soil-born insects. Q A
When is the best time to harvest herbs? Harvesting can be done anytime. If you have potted herbs that you would like to bring indoors, do so now. Be sure to check for pests.
Q Can I still fertilize my lawn to prepare for next spring? A Absolutely! We recommend applying Espoma Organic Lawn Food in September/ October. Seed patchy areas now and keep them moist until the ground freezes. This helps to provide a thick, green lawn earlier in the spring. Q I’ve heard I should wait until spring to cut back my perennials. Is this true? A Not really. Leaving plant debris can promote disease & insect problems next year since they overwinter in your garden. Don’t cut fall-blooming perennials or anything with winter interest. Soggy, dead foliage should be removed and composted if it’s disease-free. Leave 2” of stem growth above the ground for anything you prune and keep mulch 2” away from the base of all plants. Q Now that I have brought my houseplants in for the winter do I need to continue to fertilize? A Typically the growth of plants slows during the winter months. If your plants are looking a little wilted, try increasing the humidity by misting the foliage 2–3 times per week with water. Resume fertilizing in February, except for flowering plants such as African Violets and Orchids–continue fertilizing these plants with plant-specific fertilizers to ensure blooming during the winter months. Q Do I need to do anything to my strawberry patch for the winter? A Yes, simply add some Bumper Crop compost to the bed and cover with straw for the season. Corrie Hunt, Green Team &
Tina Sottolano, Green Team
Q A
Can I still fertilize my lawn in November? Yes. This is the most important application of the year. Use a high nitrogen fertilizer such as Scotts Step 4 as late as Thanksgiving.
Q Should I prune my roses before the winter season? A It is not recommended. It is best to prune roses in early spring when new leaves are emerging. But be sure to pick up the fallen leaves at the base of the plant before winter– this plant debris is where most of the disease problems come from next year. Q When can I plant my Paperwhite and Amaryllis bulbs so they bloom in time for Christmas? A The general time is 4-6 weeks for Paperwhites and 6-8 weeks for Amaryllis to bloom. Plant the bulbs in a cool and bright place. If you find the plants are not progressing, move to a warmer location. Q I am hosting Thanksgiving dinner and need some suggestions on adding colorful live indoor flowers. A Greenhouse grown mums, like Pelles, bear rich hues of orange and gold and are long blooming. Place them throughout your home to bring the colors of the season indoors. Q What can I do to make the containers in my front portico look inviting for the upcoming Holiday season? A Add seasonal cut evergreens to your pots. For a 10”–12” pot, you will need approximately three pre-bundled cut Pine stems, two bundles of Fir and one bundle of incense Cedar. Begin by placing the tallest Pine stem in the center of the soil. Work outward in a circular pattern placing in the remaining tall Pine stems and then adding the Fir stems. Once the majority of the pot is filled with greens, add the incense Cedar around the edges of the container. Add some white Birch branches and Winterberry stems for some color or a festive red bow and you will be ready for the holidays!

Keeping it
Transforming your summer containers into fall
and winter ones does not have to be difficult. Simply choose annuals and perennials that provide interest throughout the changing seasons. Here are some quick tips to make the seasonal transition fun and festive for gardeners of all levels. In September and October, begin to replace your summer annuals with cool season ones, which can include rich hues of reds, oranges and yellows. Chrysanthemums and Winter Pansies are staples in the autumn garden. Consider adding perennial grasses and Heucheras to create a distinct combination of texture and color. Cabbage and Kale are also excellent cool season annuals that provide long lasting color, allowing for easy transition to a winter container garden.
30
Remember, when planting your fall and winter container gardens, continue to water regularly. Once the temperatures turn cold and the soil freezes, use Wilt–Stop on evergreens to help minimalize frost damage. Before long, your winter containers will be welcoming spring! Tina Sottolano, Green Team

Our thoughts turn to the Holiday season in November. During this time, outdoor containers can continue to be a source of gardening pleasure. Conifers and many broadleaf evergreens, such as Boxwood and Winterberry Holly, make an elegant statement for the Christmas season. Or consider using fresh cut greens of Pine, Fir and Incense Cedar to spruce up any outdoor container. Then place these festive containers on your porch or aside your entry way for instant holiday cheer.

Traditions stand the test of time in each one of our families. One favorite tradition in my family is enjoying a wonderful recipe passed down from generation to generation. Nothing like a Brunch Strata to start the festivities! My family would sit and open presents while the aroma of the Brunch Strata baking in the kitchen would permeate our home. Christmas without this tasty and scrumptious breakfast tradition wouldn’t be the same.
Serves 8–10 1 bag of bread cube stuffing 8 eggs 2 cups of milk 2 cups of shredded swiss cheese 1 bag of ham cubes 1 cup of chopped onions 9” x 13” casserole dish (not glass)
Bucks Country Gardens
Ingredients:
A match made in heaven! I have such fond memories as a child, watching my mother and grandmother forever baking and cooking for the glorious season. Being the taste tester was certainly the best job! The preparation seemed endless and the time spent together was more than priceless.

Ahh, the Holidays... Mmm, the Food!
Directions: So, from my house to yours, enjoy this longlived family recipe. Maybe this year, you’ll add a new tradition. Wishing you many blessings and peace during this holiday season and Donna Dentner, Lifestyle Team always!
Layer bread cubes, onions, ham and cheese into a buttered casserole dish. In a separate bowl, beat eggs. Then add milk; salt and pepper to taste. Pour into casserole dish. Cover and refridgerate overnight. Keep covered and bake at 350º for 1 hour, 15 minutes. Remove cover for last 15 minutes. Enjoy!
