Welcome... If the winter weather is any indication, 2012 is looking good to me. We endured the ups and downs of 2011 and are happy to share it was another year of improving activity at Bucks Country. The weather was the big story for us with a wet and cold start, a wet and hot late summer and a wet and warm fall...but cold enough for an 8” snow in October. Rainfall totals in our area exceeded 70” for the year, more than 25” above average and above the 63” average for Hawaii, the wettest state in the country. That’s a whole lot of rain! Thanks for your loyal support and weathering the storms with us. We’re excited about the coming year for lots of good reasons. Our team is enthusiastic, the store looks awesome, the nursery is being updated, and we’ve discovered a ton of new product lines we think you’ll really like. Nancy has imported a new pottery line with styles and finishes we’ve never seen before and prices she’s certain you’ll like. Darryl is bringing back Garden Elements custom planters and hanging baskets per your requests. Donna has introduced five new groupings of Erwin and Sons resin wicker casual furniture, offering both traditional and contemporary styling to anchor our new lifestyle displays. More than anywhere in the store, new lines in the Boutique are already causing quite a stir. Greg and Donna were busy at the Atlanta Market landing Aspen Bay Candles, cinda b Handbags, Waxing Poetic Sterling Jewelry, Noelle Wraps,

Dance into Spring with
tangerine tango
Pantone’s 2012 Color of the Year Tangerine Tango, a spirited reddish orange, provides the energy boost we need to recharge and move forward. It is a sophisticated hue that is both dramatic and seductive. Just like a beautiful sunset, Tangerine Tango combines the vivaciousness of red with the warmth of yellow creating a truly magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy. Surprisingly versatile, Tangerine Tango is a hue with a lot of depth, a bit exotic, yet friendly. Pair it with complementary colors like blues and greens to really make it pop. If your style is a little more reserved, pair it with similar shades such as reds, pinks and yellows to tone it down a notch. Tangerine Tango also works beautifully with neutrals of taupe, grey, brown and white.

Extreme Transformation The new owners of this gorgeous Doylestown home were excited to get started on a complete transformation of both the front and back yards. Adding character and functionality were high up on their list. Blending new products to complement the existing architecture and landscape was number one.
Top, After: A view of the new two-level Pennsylvania bluestone patio as it extends from the home into the backyard. Left, Before: French patio doors were installed by the new homeowners in anticipation of creating an outdoor living space, which the home was missing. The mature trees, severe slope of the yard and a sizable retaining wall were among the many challenges the designer faced.
Phase One
The first phase of this project was the front yard and entrance to the home. Plantings around the foundation had reached their life span and no longer enhanced the architecture of the home. Most of the specimens were removed and our designers had a clean slate to create a warm and inviting entrance. The Pennsylvania Bluestone walkway now provides a comfortable approach to the front door from the driveway, and is lined with plants to soften the stone facade. Landscape lighting allows for a safe entry and creates beauty and flair.
Phase Two
11
Gregory Hebel, Landscape Design/Sales
Bucks Country Gardens
The second phase of the project was addressing an awkward space and severe gradation in the backyard which existed between a retaining wall and the house. Several large trees were removed to allow for comfortable use of this space. To overcome the severe grade change without creating a massive set of stairs, separate patio areas were built, one being two feet higher than the other. This allows space for grilling, relaxing and entertaining. To tie the new construction into the home’s existing materials, the stone retaining walls now match the stone of the house perfectly. The bluestone which caps the stairs and the patio surface adds a sophistication to the space while repeating the look of the walkway in the front yard. Landscape lighting provides safety in the low light and allows the homeowners to enjoy the space long after the sun goes down.

A well-maintained property is not only visually appealing, but also provides a sense of well-being and sets the foundation for a successful garden. Not everyone has the time nor energy to perform this feat themselves. The Bucks Country Gardens Landscape Division can do as much, or as little, of the “dirty work” as you would like. For Spring Maintenance Services, call us at 215.766.7800 to speak to a member of the Landscape Design/Build Team.
KEEP THE SEASON ROLLING A sure way to chase away the winter blues is to add a splash of color with annuals. Some great choices for early installation are Pansies, Columbine, Primrose, Stock and Ranunculus. Just ask– we’ll gladly add some color to your landscape beds or planters to give your home a fresh springtime look. Look ahead to summer with the use of Petunias, Verbena and Vinca.

10 tips
FOR BUYING OUTDOOR FURNITURE
Impatiens Festival AprIl 19–29
In the market to buy high quality, long lasting outdoor furniture for your home? Here are some points to consider:
1. Specialty patio stores and full-line furniture stores, such as Bucks Country Gardens, are the best places to look. Avoid bigbox stores and department stores. 2. Make sure all of the metal frames are created from alu-
minum and not steel (steel will rust, aluminum will not rust).
3.
Take the “thump test”. Good quality, heavy wall aluminum frames will have a “thud” sound when thumped. Cheap, thin wall aluminum frames will have a “tink” sound when thumped.

diaNthus | salvia | imPatiENs | maRigolds | PEtuNias
4.
Are the fabrics truly outdoor fabrics? Have the fabrics been “UV” Tested?
5. 6.
Sit in the furniture–is it comfortable and roomy?
Notice the cushions–do they feel really light and too soft? If so, they are made only with fiber which will flatten or “pancake” in no time, leaving you with a saggy cushion that is uncomfortable.
Bucks Country Gardens 1057 N. EastoN Road | doylEstowN, Pa | 215.766.7800 buckscouNtRygaRdENs.com | oPEN 7 days
7. Look at the foot glides and any end caps that fit into the metal end cuts. Do they match the frame finish? Quality manufacturers will match these to the frame finish 8.
Are the furniture legs supported by braces? When you sit in the furniture do the legs “walk” or tend to spread out? Braces will eliminate this design defect.
9.
If nuts, bolts and washers are used, are they stainless steel or regular steel? Stainless steel hardware is more durable and will not rust. Regular steel will rust.
10. TRICK: Be aware that some poor-quality manufacturers
will put steel rods into the aluminum frames to make the thin wall aluminum frame feel substantial. Due to the condensation that naturally develops inside the hollow aluminum frames, the steel will quickly rust and the stains will seep out leaving stains on the furniture and the patio or deck surface.

Bottom line, looks can be deceiving. Some stores present some nice “looking” furniture but the quality is not as good as the quality of furniture you will likely find in specialty patio stores or full-line furniture stores. The sales people at Bucks Country Gardens are always available to assist you in selecting the right patio and pool furniture for your outdoor space.

2012
New Kids on the Plot Can’t wait for you to meet the newest kids in our garden plot this spring at Bucks Country Gardens! These new plant introductions, with their unique and different personalities, can add the colorful and refreshing improvement your garden craves. Meet the five newest neighbors on our block and welcome them to your home and garden.
Hellebores
‘grape galaxy’
Bucks Country Gardens
‘ice follies’
22
‘pink parachutes’
Hellebores are the harbingers of spring, blooming for six weeks or more beginning in late winter. They often flower during the Christian season of Lent, from which they get their common name, Lenten Rose. This is the perfect plant for naturalizing in moist, woodland areas where its extensive root system will spread as far as it is allowed. Deer resistant Hellebores are perfect companions for colorful Heucheras, Hardy Ferns and bold Hostas. A brand new introduction in the Hellebores family is the Winter Thrillers series. They come in a multitude of colors ranging from giant greens to double pinks. Bucks Country Gardens will introduce three of the new series this spring: Grape Galaxy, Ice Follies and Pink Parachutes. Hellebore ‘Grape Galaxy’ is a vigorous grower that produces an abundance of very large 3½”, grape purple flowers heavily spotted with dark purple flecks on every petal. Bright green centers provide brilliant contrast vividly against each dark colored flower. Mature plants can have over 50 flow
ers in bloom at once! Strong stems hold the flowers well above the evergreen foliage so they are sure not to be missed. Mature specimens of ‘Ice Follies’ are extraordinarily heavy flowering, producing upwards of 100 flowers per plant, thereby being nicknamed “Major Stud” by the breeder. The large 3” cream to light yellow flowers are splashed with strawberry to burgundy red flecks on each petal. Huge 4” flowers are the trademark of Hellebores ‘Pink Parachutes’. Very strong, pencil-width stems carry loads of blossoms from early through mid-spring. The lovely blooms are bright pink with a fine spray of tiny dark pink to wine colored spots on all of the petals. Most flowers have soft blush pink backs, but others have nicely contrasting white backs, lending a two-tone look to the blooms. Be sure to stop in to Bucks Country Gardens anytime in April to pick up one of these great new Hellebores.
hosta ‘first frost’
Hosta ‘First Frost’ Looking for a Hosta that can take the heat? ‘First Frost’ is a great new offering of blue Hosta that, unlike most, will keep its blue shading throughout the hottest and most humid days of a typical Delaware Valley summer. Perfect for light shade areas, the bold, creamy yellow margins are set off by blue hearts as this plant grabs your attention from a distance and pulls you in for a closer look. In mid summer, this beauty will be covered in lavender flowers that will attract butterflies by the score. By summer’s end, the creamy yellow edges turn to a soft white. For multi-season appeal on a 3’ wide, low-care frame, look no further than Hosta ‘First Frost’.
Double Take Quince Series

double take quince ‘orange storm’
Bucks Country Gardens
You will truly do a double take when you see one of these Quinces which look much like a Camellia. Double Take ‘Pink Storm’ and ‘Orange Storm’ put on a spectacular early season display. Bright spring flowers are only the beginning of the Double Take Quince’s appeal. Easy to care for, they have neither thorns, nor fruit and are deer-resistant. They thrive in part sun to full sun conditions and have a mounded growth habit. Extremely drought tolerant once established, these early spring charmers are excellent landscape plants. As an added bonus, the large, double flowers are beautiful in cut flower arrangements.
Pieris Japonica ‘Passion Frost’
pieris japonica ‘passion frost’
This new shade shrub sparkles with bright cerise pink flowers in spring and its uniformily variegated foliage attracts extra attention. A sparkling new variety of the beloved Lilyof-the-Valley shrub, Pieris Japonica ‘Passion Frost’ is festooned with pendulous clusters of flowers throughout spring. This new introduction is anticipated to be just as deer resistant as Andromeda ‘Mountain Fire’ or ‘Dorothy Wyckoff’.
Buddleia ‘Flutterby’ A plant familiar to most, the Butterfly Bush often takes more garden space with which most gardeners are willing to part. Fortunately, the ‘Flutterby’ requires a fraction of the space needed to allow for a normal Buddleia. A late spring bloomer, the maximum size for ‘Flutterby Petites’ is 2’–3’ both tall and wide and prefers full sun. But don’t be deceived by the pintsized package–these plants pack a punch of outstanding color and super-long bloom. Low-care and maximum impact, ‘Flutterby Petites’ are a great new introduction for every garden or landscape. buddleia ‘flutterby’

Natural Lawn Care We all admire a beautiful lawn. It can enhance your home’s curb appeal and provide a soft, resilient play area for your family. But too many people rely on lawn care programs that apply broad, and often unnecessary, applications of conventional fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides that are potentially harmful to children, pets and the environment. The approach towards an organic lawn is “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”, meaning that the best defense against weeds and other problems is a healthy lawn, and that requires healthy soil. Healthy soil should be crumbly, brown and alive with earthworms and beneficial microorganisms. This allows roots to grow deep and become more resistant to drought and other stress. By following a few basic guidelines, you can create the right kind of soil to have a safe, beautiful lawn that is resistant to weeds and other potential problems.
Watering
Watering should be a regular part of your lawn maintenance, especially during hot weather. In general, water your lawn thoroughly with about one inch of water when it begins to wilt in the spring. This deep watering encourages deeper rooting, making your lawn less susceptible to root-pruning insects and diseases. Summer watering should be light but frequent. The best time of day to water your lawn is early morning when evaporation losses are low and leaves dry quickly. Mowing is an essential practice for proper lawn care by discouraging weeds and making the lawn more resistant to pests. Ideally, grass should be cut often enough so that no more than 1/3 of the total grass height is removed at one time. Keep mower blades sharp to avoid ripping the grass and leave the clippings where they fall because they return nutrients to the soil. This can reduce nitrogen requirements by up to 30 percent.

promote healthy top growth for the plant and strengthen the plant to help it combat insect and disease problems.
Q Do I need to fertilize my Knock-Out Roses? If so what should I use? A Knock-Out Roses are vigorous growers
and bloomers without any help, but it doesn’t hurt to feed them. Topdress the base of the plant with Bumper Crop or Mushroom Compost, both of which will slowly release nutrients to the soil as they decompose over the spring months. Or, use a granular fertilizer such as Espoma Rose-tone, Master Start or Osmocote. For a liquid option, try Bayer Rose & Flower All-inOne, which not only fertilizes the plant but combats insect and disease problems that are common with Roses.
Q When should I apply crabgrass control on my lawn? A A pre-emergent granular application is
recommended around mid-April. Provide irrigation if rain is not in the forecast. Please note: do not apply Scotts’ Lawn Pro Crabgrass Control to newly seeded lawns as this will inhibit seed germination .
Tips & To-Do’s annuals Start seeds indoors for summer flowering annuals and vegetable plants. perennials Avoid removing foliage from spring flowering bulbs. Allow it to die naturally–it nourishes the bulb for the next year´s growth and flowers. Tying the foliage in a knot keeps it more attractive until it dies. Use Bonide Rose & Flower 3-in-1 plant food on Roses and other perennials. Spread Espoma Rose-tone fertilizer around existing Rose bushes. edible gardening Plant cool season veggies like Carrots, Lettuce, Spinach and Beans. Begin moving herbs outdoors, protecting them on cold nights. Keep Basil and Parsley indoors for a few more weeks since they are more sensitive to the cold. Prepare vegetable gardens by tilling soil, weeding and spreading soil builders such as Bumper Crop, compost and mushroom soil. Work soil amendments into the top 3” layer of soil. trees & shrubs Fertilize fruit and flowering trees with Espoma Tree-tone. Spread fresh mulch at 2–3” deep, keeping it away from trunks and stems of plants, shrubs and trees. Prune any summer flowering shrubs like Butterfly Bush and Hydrangea. Apply Bonide Tree & Shrub Insect Control for preemptive control of insect and disease problems. Use Rootmaster B-1 when planting all new trees and shrubs to stimulate healthy root growth and reduce transplant stress. lawn care Aerate, seed and fertilize existing lawns. Q When can I plant summer annuals like
Geraniums and Lantana?
A The “frost free” date is May 15th for our
region. Provided you protect plants on nights when the temperature goes down to freezing, you can plant tender annuals a few weeks prior to that date. To avoid death by frost, place a frost cloth over plants, or put them under a covered porch, in the garage or under a cushioned outdoor chair to keep frost from settling on top of plants.
Q There are tan/brown spots on the leaves of my Pachysandra ground cover. Is this a concern? A The pathogen is Volutella which causes
a blight on the plant and if not treated, can lead to plant die back. Remove fallen leaves, provide good air circulation, avoid de-icing runoff and fertilize plants moderately. Apply Bonide Mancozeb, a fungicide to protect the plants when the weather is wet.
Q Should I use potting soil or Bumper Crop to grow veggies in containers?

for growing edibles in containers. Bumper Crop is meant for gardens and beds because
A Use Gardener’s Gold Organic Potting Soil
of its wonderful soil building components, but is too heavy for growing veggies in pots. Gardener’s Gold will provide better drainage and oxygen to the roots, producing a healthier plant and better fruit production.
Q Why does my hibiscus drop most of its leaves or becomes discolored when I put it back outside? A The increased amount of sun exposure
can “shock” the plant. Gradually re-acclimate it to sunlight by exposing it to direct sun for only a few hours a day. After a week, slowly move it into full sun (six hours or more a day). This will help the plant adjust to the change in sun exposure in a healthy way.
Q I’ve tried planting both sun and shade loving plants in this one area but nothing survives. Any suggestions? A Yes, it’s called plant a birdbath! Seriously, some areas of the garden are just difficult areas. Maybe it’s the soil: too dry, too wet…there are many reasons an area can be troublesome. Use garden art as an alternative–statues, gazing balls and benches are a great way to fill a space that doesn’t seem to work as a planting area.

What’s this? Identify a Grass Imposter: Crabgrass Spring is in the air and lawns are waking up after the long winter. As grass turns green once again, it is easier to spot broadleaf weeds, but grassy weeds are trickier to identify and remove because they are similar to grass in appearance. These imposter “grasses”, such as crabgrass, can live alongside grasses of all varieties. Crabgrass spreads quickly and differs from grass in color, texture and growth pattern, creating an uneven and uncomfortable lawn if not identified and controlled early on. What is crabgrass? Crabgrass gets its name because it sprawls from a central root low across the ground. It can become a problem quickly because it is able to grow vigorously in hot, dry conditions. Before dying in the fall, a single weed can distribute thousands of seeds which may germinate in spring.
For more information on crabgrass and other lawn weeds, visit: www.buckscountrygardens.com/ask-anexpert and click on the link for Scotts.com.

How do I get rid of crabgrass? Higher mowing encourages lawn grasses to shade and prevent the germination of crabgrass seeds. A deep-rooted, thick lawn seldom contains much crabgrass. Discourage the growth of crabgrass by mowing at the highest setting on your mower. Crabgrass is better adapted to adverse growing conditions than most lawn grasses; shallow and infrequent watering will only weaken the roots of your desired grass, while allowing the crabgrass to thrive and take over. If you water your lawn, water deeply and less frequently, wetting the soil to a depth of 4-6 inches. This usually requires the equivalent of ½-1 inch of rainfall. Apply a lawn food that contains preemergent weed control, such as Scotts® LawnPro® Crabgrass Preventer Plus Lawn Fertilizer in early spring (before temperatures are regularly in the 80’s). It keeps crabgrass away for up to four months while providing your lawn with essential nutrients.

An estimated three million children in the U.S. now have food allergies, and many of their parents turn to the internet for information, news and support. More than 20,000 of them are members of Kids With Food Allergies, a non-profit organization located right here in Doylestown. Kids With Food Allergies was founded in 2004 by Lynda Mitchell to better serve the growing needs of parents looking for peer support and health information. Her son, now a teenager, had developed multiple food allergies as an infant. Lynda had found virtually no information or support available and was moved to establish Parents of Food Allergic Kids, an on-line support group, in 1998. Lynda brings with her twenty years’ experience in hospital management, consulting, teaching and training and a Master’s degree from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota in Health Information Management.

100% orgAniC Nutri-Peat® provides Nature’s Simple ABC’s...
A beautiful dark brown color. Beneficial organic fertilization. Compost activity decomposes Nutri-Peat® into rich humus. Deepening soil’s tilth and friability by adding moisture retention in the planting beds. Enhances soil’s natural resistance to nasty fungi like artillery spores, mushrooms, molds
and other undesirable growths.
