My wife Barb is an animal lover.
If Barb had her way, Bucks Country Gardens would be a zoo by now. At home, we’ve had as many as four labs at one time, guinea pigs, rabbits, cats, love birds and cockatiels. At the Garden Center, it’s been swans, cockatiels, doves, McCaw’s, and parrots. When we’re in Myrtle Beach, we just have to get another picture with the monkey and the lion cub at Barefoot Landing. Barb even helps our friends pick their pets and just loves their buffalos, donkeys, horses, dogs, cats and ducks.
A very passionate animal lover. Let me give you a few examples: When the earth worms come out of the ground and crawl on our driveway after it rains, Barb picks them up and puts them back in the grass. Lawn & Garden Care 5 Essential Products for Fall
Lawns and gardens need maintenance all year long. Here are some timely tips to help you prepare for the upcoming cold and dormant winter months. To obtain plant-specific care sheets or to ask our experts your gardening questions, log onto buckscountrygardens.com/ask-an-expert.
plant Care Perennials need to be cut down, divided and fertilized at this time. Use Espoma Plant-tone, an organic fertilizer. Trees and shrubs should be pruned during the cooler temperatures. Feed your deciduous trees and shrubs with Espoma Plant-Tone. An application of Espoma Holly-tone to all acid loving evergreens and shrubs goes a long way in the garden. At least three applications of Wilt-Pruf to evergreen plants will help to prevent moisture loss and leaf burn from winter winds.
Lawn Care
Once pond water temperatures fall below 60 degrees, switch your fish food to a wheatgerm based food that is easier to digest, such as Tetra Pond Spring and Fall Diet Food. You should stop feeding your fish completely when pond temperatures are below 50 degrees. After the first frost, discard tropical and annual pond plants. Also, prune back hardy perennials in your pond. After pruning, clean out any leaves that may have fallen into your pond and then cover it with netting to keep your water clean during the chilly winter months. Use Microbe-Lift Autumn/Winter Prep to stabilize the pond water’s biological activity, even in water temperatures of 40 degrees. It reduces buildup of dead leaves and organic sediment all winter long, making it a healthier environment in the spring.

Fall is the best time to fertilize your lawn. Coolseason grasses, such as bluegrass, fescue, and ryegrass, respond well to feeding in early September and again in late fall (late October or November). It helps them green up earlier and look better in spring. Try Scotts Lawn Pro Lawn Fertilizer. It will strengthen roots, retain moisture and grow a greener lawn next year.

For the Birds... The weather outside may turn
frightful, but caring for our feather friends during winter can make the season so delightful. Freezing temperatures and limited food supplies can challenge our resident species. A few simple additions to your backyard can transform it into an attractive winter habitat for birds and other wildlife, and bring nature to your doorstep to observe and enjoy.

Although they are covered in layers of insulating feathers, birds have a high metabolism and require high-calorie foods during the winter months. Black Oil Sunflower Seed is the hamburger of the bird world. Almost every bird likes it and it has high fat content, which makes it perfect for the cold months. It can also go into any type of feeder. Suet Cakes are another popular choice. With various flavors including Nutty, Berry and High Energy, you’ll be sure to find one that your birds like. Safflower Seed is the favorite food of Cardinals and the least favorite of squirrels. Fruits and nuts are an important dietary element as well. Try Lyric Fruit and Nut Seed to attract a plethora of birds.
Bird Feeders
Not sure about which feeder to choose? Here are a few of our favorites. Nature’s Way Sunshine Feeder has baffles that allow even distribution to all perches and feedholes. It’s dishwasher safe, which makes it a favorite to humans as well. If squirrels are a problem in your backyard, try the Squirrel Buster. It’s chew proof and both perching and clinging birds love this feeder. We also love the Conant
Custom Brass Thermometer Feeder, which has a large thermometer on the side for avid bird watchers. It also has a friction top fit for easy filling. Placement of the feeders is also imperative. Feeders in quiet, less disturbed areas generally do better than feeders placed near active areas such as garage doors or patios. Birds need to see a feeder before they visit it. Placing feeders in a sunny, open area not only makes them more visible to passing birds, but it also gives feeding birds a good field of view to stay on the lookout for predators and other threats. If you want to place a feeder near a window for viewing, the feeder should be placed either very close (less than three feet away) or much further away (greater than ten feet) so birds cannot hit the window hard enough for injury.

Bird Houses
Birds also need a place to call home. If you are looking for a place to house many birds, try out Edisonville Woodshop Houses. More than Poinsettias How to Use Plants & Fresh Greens in Holiday Decorating Decorating for the holidays is more than simply ornaments, stockings and linens. Plants and fresh greens are an awesome way to decorate your home inside and out. Poinsettias are a classic but there are plenty of other options out there to make your home look incredible for the festive winter months. While searching for what’s new in home decorating for this Christmas season, our buyers noticed two major trends: Country Chic and Metallics. With these trends in mind, our designers created wreaths, gift baskets and centerpieces with fresh greens and plants. We also created a list of everything you need to recreate these pieces at home.
About the Styles: Country Chic This is a rustic look, charming and perfect for a Bucks County Christmas. Full of pinecones, berries and plaids, it’s an easy transition if you’re looking to try something new. Another element of Country Chic? Dried fruit and cinnamon sticks! They will add fragrance and warmth to those chilly December nights. Metallics Modern, flashy and a little sparkly is the best way to describe the metallic looks that are hot this year. Stick to gold and silver for your go-to colors. Add plenty of sparkly picks and crystal ornaments to any basket or wreath you create. Add frosted berries and pinecones, too. How fabulous!
Wreaths
Let your front door make a statement this year! Country Chic Start with a plain, fresh greens wreath as your base or try one of our mixed greens wreaths that already has pinecones attached, it will save you a step! Pick a bow in a plaid or burlap fabric for the country look. The most traditional spot for a bow is at the top, in the center, but feel free to place it wherever you think looks best. Next, add some dried statice, fresh berries (either Juniper or Viburnum), Magnolia leaves and some bird picks and ornaments. This Country Chic wreath will look best with an odd number of items scattered throughout, so don’t be too formal. Metallics For this wreath, use a Noble fir wreath as your base. Grab a bow in metallic silver or gold–these will be your main colors for this theme. Insert frosted berries or white Tallo berries throughout the wreath. Hot glue or wire painted pinecones throughout the wreath. Remember, odd numbers work best! Complete the wreath with some glass stem balls and crystal ornaments and don’t be afraid to mix metals, the trend is huge!

Country Chic To create this look, place a burlap runner down the center of your dining table. Lay fresh greens on top for texture. Next, pick some rustic pots to line down the middle of the runner. Orchids and ivy topiaries make great focal points. Use pink cyclamen as accent. Frosted ferns are great as well. Adorn the rest of your tablescape with shiny candles, glass balls and glitter picks. Terrariu ms Terrariums have been gaining popularity over the last few years and it’s easy to decorate them for the holidays! All of Liz’s designs evolved from her love of old American quilts, coverlets and textiles and are created by hand in her New Jersey studio. Her folk art pieces are one of a kind, distinctly different due to the incorporation of old, imperfect textiles and her attention to detail. Each piece is signed by the artist and quilt origins are noted, when available.
This artist creates unique and nostalgic collectable Santa dolls which started out as a hobby 18 years ago. Karen Didion’s Original Santas are created with hand painted, resin hands and faces with glass inset eyes. Reindeer Magic
Thoroughly mix all dry ingredients in a mixing bowl. Store mixture in an airtight container until ready to serve. To prepare one serving, add ¼ cup powder mix into 1 cup hot water. Stir thoroughly. Garnish drink with cinnamon stick and peppermint stick. Enjoy!
