We all want the beauty and satisfaction that comes with a healthy, thriving garden. But sometimes it seems like the soil in our garden is working against us. The soils we work are often poor and lifeless and our new landscape plants have difficulty surviving. Take a few basic steps to ensure success with valuable new plantings. First, make good planting choices. Consider native varieties that are better suited to your area. Make certain you are planting the right plant for the right location–don’t plant sun loving annuals in afternoon shade for example. Use plants that are rated for your hardiness zone and plant during optimal times of the year, typically spring or fall. Often the critical factor that determines a plant’s success is how fast a new installation can develop a

solid and sizable root mass. Without this, plants often fail in hot dry summers or are not able to withstand harsh winters. Recent research has shown that using biologically active plant starters and soil amendments will help speed root development even in poor soils. Espoma’s Bio-tone® Starter Plus combines the nutrients from all natural and organic plant foods with beneficial bacteria and mycorrhizae fungi. The result is a remarkably larger root mass that helps the plant take hold quickly. But the good news doesn’t end there. The beneficial bacteria in Bio-tone® Starter Plus have also been shown to increase shoot growth and bloom count. This means larger, more beautiful plants...faster! Landscaping is an important part of your home’s value. Protect your investment in landscape plants by making good planting decisions and giving them the best chance for success. Look for new Espoma Bio-tone® Starter Plus today at Bucks Country Gardens to start things off right.

The enclosed terrace provides protected space for comfortable deep seating furniture while the free standing fireplace and custom grill are only steps away.

In Your Own Backyard

BUCKS COUNTRY GARDENS LANDSCAPE FEATURE

12

Bucks Country Gardens

Time for a Change The backyard of the orange brick and gray cedar Cape-Cod was a combination of splintering pressure treated decking, grass jointed paver pool aprons and irregular boulder steps, surrounded by a sagging English hurdle fence and a tired garden with decent bones. Twenty–five years ago it must have looked fabulous, but its time had come‌and gone. Left: The stamped concrete pool apron paving features a two-step process combining seamless rock texture with hand carved joints producing a realistic, natural effect.

The “To-Do” List The list was simple yet quite complete: A weather protected patio where dining and lounging worked together; a generous grill close by but not too close; a wood burning fireplace to warm the chilly spring and fall evenings; an openness to the adjacent pool but a feeling of separation and intimacy; lush and colorful gardens and planters that make a statement. It needed to be safe enough for grandmom and the aging labs without dominating ramps and railings; big enough for large parties while comfortable for just two; low enough maintenance to minimize the care and maximize the enjoyment; and feature natural beauty and high quality with attention to detail while maintaining good value and affordability. Above: The enclosed deep seating lounge area and adjacent dining space are spacious enough for a dozen friends yet intimate enough for just a few. Below: The hot tub with natural waterfall/stream is conveniently adjacent to the enclosed terrace and surrounded by colorful annual plantings of New Gold Lantana and Compact Orange SunPatiens.

The Design

buckscountrygardens.com 13

s

Designing from the house out, the multilevel decks were replaced with a single level covered patio containing a custom grill, dining area for eight, lounging area with natural stone fireplace and large planters softening the oversized steps to the house. A single step separates the patio from the pool allowing for a transition from the rectangular pattern patio to the “rock skins” natural pool apron. The entire wooded back yard is enclosed with an aluminum picket fence through the pool side gardens and woven coated wire practically invisible through the natural woodland. A generous lawn area remains, surrounded by plantings of flowering shrubs, ornamental grasses, perennials massings, specimen evergreens and flowering trees. Two small areas are reserved for splashes of powerful seasonal color highlighting the spa stream and creek stone pool edge wall. Track spot and soffit recessed lighting illuminate the covered patio while low voltage path and accent uplighting create a warm glow just perfect for nighttime swims and pool garden parties.

The Challenges The biggest challenge facing the homeowners and the designers in this project was balancing quantity with quality. Each element of the project was analyzed identifying items where cost determined selection and where compromise was out of the question. For the patio enclosure, standing seam metal roof over tongue & groove fir roofing won out over asphalt shingle on plywood, while wrapped 6”x6” columns were in and round composite columns were out. A built in custom kitchen was a no go, but the stand-alone Brazilian cherry and granite counter grill was a big yes. There were no options for the towering focal point fireplace, an artful combination of natural stones with bluestone hearth, mantel, and shelves complete with an automatic gas fire starter. Stamped concrete, however, was chosen over natural bluestone for the paving surfaces of the patio and pool apron and the existing pool garden and soffit lighting was repurposed while stylish contemporary track light and ceiling fan were chosen for the patio enclosure. The backyard gardens were retrofitted using transplanted specimens and masses of small flowering shrubs and perennials rather than redesigning the entire garden with totally new plantings.

The F inal Result

14

Bucks Country Gardens

The resulting outdoor living area is a real winner. The details are classic, the spaces magnetic, the maintenance realistic and the budget intact. The homeowner said it best… “Even better than we could have imagined! We are out there every day, sometimes all day and who would have believed a roaring fire and a glass of malbec would be so right on a hot August night? Top: Massed plantings of Knockout Rose, Variegated Liriope and Chocolate Eupatorium border the enclosed terrace with a constant splash of color. Middle: An eclectic mix of native creek stone, tumbled bluestone and collected fieldstone was selected for the wood burning fireplace. The arched fire box adds to the natural informal style. Left: The pool edge garden is highlighted by the texture of specimen Weeping Blue Atlas Cedar, Morning Light Maiden Grass and Weeping Alaskan Cedar. ‘Banana Cherry Sunrise’ Lantana provides a hardy and colorful border, attracting butterflies throughout the summer.

Hummingbirds For centuries, gardeners have been

fascinated with the beauty and aerobatics of Hummingbirds. The tiniest of all birds, Hummingbirds weigh in at less than an ounce and are only three inches long. Their brightly colored, iridescent feathers and quick movements make them appear as living sun catchers giving them the quintessential nickname, Flying Jewels.

most ready-to-use nectar and feeders are this hue. If you want to use flowers to attract your Hummingbirds, brightly colored flowers with a tubular shape hold the most nectar. Here’s a proven list of plants which attract Hummingbirds: When possible, choose varieties in red and orange shades. Bee Balm Butterfly Bush Catmint Cleome

Dianthus Coral Bells Columbine Daylily

Foxglove Hollyhock Impatiens Iris

Larkspur Lupine Petunia Red-Hot Poker

Summer Phlox Verbena Weigela Yucca

Hummingbirds have the unique ability to fly in any direction, even backward, with their wings beating up to a blurring 80 beats per second. Plus, they can hover in midair when sipping nectar from their favorite drinking spots. Spotting a Hummingbird in your backyard is certainly a treat. Luckily for us, they are beginning their migration North for the season so it’s the perfect time to create a friendly environment in your backyard and landscape for these Flying Jewels!

The key to attracting Hummingbirds to your yard is to plant enough flowers to provide a habitat that will give them shade, shelter, food and security. Herbs, flowering shrubs, dwarf trees and vines can all be used to create an ideal tiered habitat. It’s important to provide enough space between plants to give the hummingbirds opportunity to hover and navigate from flower to flower.

Backyard Nesting After a long winter with few feath-

ered friends out and about, bird enthusiasts are eager to attract spring birds to bring color and song to their gardens. Fortunately, birds are just as eager to find welcoming bird-friendly backyards to visit. The key to attracting birds in spring is to meet their needs after a long migration flight as they prepare for the nesting season. Backyard birders who pay attention to birds’ food, water, shelter and nesting requirements can be successful in attracting them.

available until the season is well advanced and add spring pruning clippings to a brush pile so birds have material for creating their nests. In the spring, birds are eagerly seeking suitable nesting areas to raise their annual broods. To encourage birds to take up residence in your yard, clean out birdhouses and repair them if necessary to be ready for new families. Add nesting material to your yard such as small twigs and branches, soft grasses and evergreen clippings. Also, be sure to keep your feeders filled so parent birds know your yard is a good place for a convenient food source. Spring is such an critical time for birds as they are preparing to begin their families again. If you provide everything nesting birds need, you will be rewarded with color and song in your backyard all season long.

FOOD & WATER

In the spring there are few berries, seeds or insects available for newly arrived migrating birds. Offering more birdfeeders with mixed varieties of birdseed will help nourish these birds; while keeping suet and other winter bird foods available will help the birds recover from their long journeys. Our Bucks Country Gardens blend of birdseed is a great starting point for attracting your birds because it is full of many different seeds that a majority of birds love!

While spring may be a moist season, adding water to your bird-friendly landscape is a sure way to attract birds. A dripper can keep the water moving, attracting passing birds. Spring birds are molting, so check the birdbath regularly to keep it clean of discarded feathers.

SHELTER & NESTING SITES

The nights are still cold in the spring and a late storm can be fatal to small birds if suitable shelter is inaccessible. Keep bird roost boxes

What is Design/Build?

Very simply, it is both the design and installation of a landscape project being performed by one company. At Bucks Country Gardens, each Landscape Designer works directly with their clients from the beginning of the project to the end–literally manages the installation in addition to creating the design. The result is a seamless process, based on direct accountability and personal relationships.

Here’s how it works: 1. A client phone call or completed Landscape Services Request Form

from the Garden Center starts the process. One of our Landscape Designers will discuss with you both your needs and our services.

2. A site visit will be scheduled to review the specifics of your project

Light up the night with Table & Post Torches!

and how we can provide the most appropriate service. On-site sketch plans and cost estimates may be used to address simple projects and determine feasibility. In most instances, a complete site analysis and client interview is conducted from which a design is created.

3. Detailed, professional landscape plans and specifications are

required on most projects. We do charge a separate fee for our design services which is credited towards the installation of your project. Clients, with whom we have worked in the past and new clients who have committed to working with us, will not be charged design fees. We will show you examples of our work and provide referrals to help you decide if you and Bucks Country Gardens are a good fit. More than 80% of our projects are referrals and repeat clients.

20

4. The landscape design and project proposal will be presented. This

will take place at the Garden Center where you will have the opportunity to review and approve plant selections and personally select the key pieces for your project. Modifications, amendments and additions to the plan are finalized and the project is approved and scheduled.

5. The installation of your project will be supervised by our produc-

tion manager together with your designer. Experienced and certified Bucks Country crews and our selected contractors will complete the project professionally, courteously, on time and on budget.

6. Your project will be reviewed and approved and the regular care

needed to insure your success will be presented to you along with our seasonal maintenance services.

Peach Sorbet Blueberry Plant | Winter

Tasty Garden

Each year, we see an increasing number of families and households grow their own produce as a way to eat healthier and control the quality and taste of their food. Gardening with edibles can be rewarding in many different ways. Start with soil and a couple of seeds and end with a fruit or veggie that you bring to the table for your family to enjoy. It’s also a great way to get the whole family involved with a project. This season, it’s all about Berries. In the last decade, blueberry consumption has increased by a whopping 300% in the U.S. Why? Studies have shown that berries are powerful allies for your health, protecting everything from your head to your heart. There is also evidence showing that berries can prevent cancer. Another benefit is that they are easy to grow, especially at home. We have several new varieties of berries arriving this spring that can add color and flavor to your backyard landscape.

Peach Sorbet Blueberry

A FOUR SEASON, COMPACT BLUEBERRY BEAUTY

Peach Sorbet is a real peach of a blueberry. A four season showstopper, this compact blueberry is stunning with vibrant new spring growth ranging from peach to pink to orange to emerald. Spring’s white bellshaped flowers will give way to an abundant summer crop of healthy, peach-sweet blueberries. In most climates, Peach Sorbet keeps its leaves through the winter when the foliage can dramatically shift to a rich eggplant purple. This blueberry is full of charm, color year round, and is perfect as a landscape hedge, as an accent plant or in decorative containers right on the patio. buckscountrygardens.com

more from their heirlooms–more fruit, more flavors and an extended harvest time. A centuries-old, natural technique of joining heirloom and hybrid varieties, grafting is commonly used in Europe and Asia as a way to provide more fruit, more flavor and an overall higher success rate in gardens with poor soil. The process of grafting involves joining the top of an heirloom plant–which produces leaves, flowers and fruit–with a hybrid rootstock to create a healthier, more vigorous plant that is ready for the home garden. The Bumper Crop line of heirloom tomatoes offers six varieties to appeal to different tastes: Big Rainbow, Black Krim, Brandywine Pink, Brandywine Red, Mortgage Lifter and San Marzano.

Raspberry Shortcake Raspberry Plant

Raspberry Shortcake Raspberry

A REVOLUTIONARY THORNLESS, DWARF RASPBERRY

Raspberry Shortcake is a compact, mounding plant, reaching 24”–36”. It’s ideally suited for large patio containers, requires no staking, no companion pollinator, and has sturdy upright canes–without a single thorn. As if that weren’t enough, it rewards home gardeners with super sweet raspberries mid-summer. Raspberry Shortcake is the result of literally a million seedlings, decades of rigorous research, trials across many geographic regions and uncompromising standards for simplicity, beauty and flavor.

PRUNING: This dwarf red raspberry produces abundant new canes each spring and fruits on new canes that have gone through a winter dormancy period. Once fruiting is finished, prune canes at the base that have fruited, leaving new canes to fruit the next season. These berries aren’t the only new edibles we are featuring this spring.

13 Easy-to-Grow Veggies & Herbs for 2013 BUSH BEANS are a healthy summer favorite for their fresh flavor and crunch. Plant bean seeds in welldrained soil where they’ll receive full sun. Harvest seeds every few weeks for a continual yield through the summer. BEETS are an earthy, sweet treat. Don’t forget to eat the greens, too! Baby beets are delicious in a raw salad. Plant as soon as soil can be worked in the spring. CARROTS are a perennial favorite and can be prepared in a variety of ways. Plant as soon as soil is ready to be worked. They thrive in fertile, sandy soil. CUCUMBERS are a tasty, refreshing addition to salads. Giving cucumber plants generous amounts of organic matter and good fertilization will produce lots of crunchy cucumbers; harvest them regularly to increase production. GOURMET LETTUCE MIX is a superb choice for container gardening. These greens taste great in a salad or on a sandwich. Lettuce thrives in cooler weather so plant in the spring and fall, harvesting every few weeks for a continuous return. SNAP PEAS Snack on these sweet peas in edible pods, which are just as welcome cooked up into a satisfying side dish. Snap peas are hardy legumes that germinate in soil temperatures as low as 40°F, but don’t do well in hot, dry weather. Plant so that they can mature as early as possible and then sow again when cooler fall days return. RADISHES These spicy, crunchy globes are packed with flavor and are more versatile than you may think: add them to a salad or in your favorite veggie stir-fry. They are easy to grow in containers and gardens; spring radish varieties are

often ready in just three weeks and are mild in flavor—hotter summer soil produces spicier radishes. MILD MUSTARD SALAD MIX of peppery and spicy mustard greens, like Mizuna and Pak Choi, add great zing to salads. Sow from early spring to mid-summer. BASIL No other herb epitomizes the taste of summer like basil. Whip up a batch of pesto or sprinkle basil on your favorite pasta dish. Plant in rich, moist soil in full sun. Gather every few weeks for a continual harvest.

DILL is a very versatile herb, with both the leaves and seeds used for seasoning, The leaves are soft and sweet, whereas the seeds have a sweet and citrusy taste that is slightly bitter. Use both fresh and dried. Plant seeds in warmer temperatures: it thrives in soil around 75°F to 80°F. CILANTRO is a flavorful herb prominent in Mexican and Southeast Asian cuisine. Try as an alternative to basil in pesto or stir into your favorite salsa recipe. The stems are as flavorful as the leaves—just discard any that are tough. Plant early in the season and gather regularly for a continued harvest. PARSLEY is often used as a garnish, leaving its delicious flavor underappreciated. Not only does it have a great aromatic quality, but parsley also contains vitamins A and C. Plant in fertile soil with organic matter and moisture. THYME is one of the most versatile herbs, best known as a background flavoring for stews and soups, It is also typically paired with savory robust foods, such as red meat, poultry and root vegetables, but is great with apples and pears, too. Grow in full sunlight.

Beware:⤵ Downy Mildew is coming for your Impatiens!

↙ During the summer of 2012,

35

Downy Mildew is a relatively new disease on Impatiens, although it has long been a problem on crops such

buckscountrygardens.com

a strange thing happened at Bucks Country Gardens: David Jones was stumped. Customer after customer stopped by our Garden Pharmacy for advice, and David, our resident plant expert, didn’t have any answers. He was stumped by Impatiens that were yellow, wilted and leafless. We sell more Impatiens than any other plant so imagine how worried we were once we saw how many customer’s plants were actually becoming infected. Unfortunately, Bucks County isn’t the only area suffering from this Impatiens blight. This disease took the nation by storm last summer and will most likely return this year. Here is what you need to know about Downy Mildew.

36

Bucks Country Gardens

as cucumbers, watermelons, roses and grapes. The strain of Downy Mildew that affects Impatiens is not the same one that affects those crops, so they are not infecting each other. Also, despite the similarity in names, Downy Mildew has different symptoms than Powdery Mildew that many gardeners are familiar with on ornamentals such as Lilacs, Peonies and Phlox.

Fusion and Butterfly hybrid Impatiens. It reportedly also affects some native wild Impatiens, also known as Jewelweeds. However, it is not a problem on New Guinea Impatiens or Sunpatiens.

The disease has been identified on Impatiens in the United States since 2004, but the mild winter and extra-early spring had large greenhouse growers in the southern United States scrambling to control the disease on their crops much earlier than normal. Although commercial growers scout and treat crops preventatively, those fungicides only provide protection for so long. By the time Impatiens were moved through retail outlets and planted in landscapes, little protection was left.

Downy Mildew symptoms typically start with a few leaves that appear slightly yellow or off color (not to be confused with lack of fertilizer), and then become completely yellow over time. Leaves may curl downward as if they need to be watered. Under humid conditions, a white, downy-like growth develops on the underside of primarily yellow or curled leaves but can also be found on the underside of green leaves. Sometimes it is difficult to see the spores without a magnifying glass or hand lens. Eventually the leaves and flowers will drop, resulting in bare stems with only a few tiny, yellow leaves remaining. These stems can become soft and the plant collapses, similar to frost damage.

Downy Mildew affects all types of standard Impatiens (Impatiens walleriana), including doubles, minis, and

Impatiens’ Downy Mildew is highly influenced by the weather. Wet foliage, cool temperatures (especially at night)

and moist air are ideal conditions for disease development and growth. Downy Mildew requires moisture to create spores and cause new infections. Plants in heavily shaded areas where leaves tend to stay wet for extended periods of time will generally have a higher severity of the disease. The blight affecting Impatiens may have come into your garden on infected transplants, or it may have blown into your garden by the wind. Even though researchers have not established how far the spores can travel, the related pathogen that causes Downy Mildew on cucurbit crops (crops which grow on a vine) has been shown to travel over 600 miles in 48 hours. Also, if you had problems with Downy Mildew last season, the disease may have survived the winter on plant debris in your flower beds. Once plants are infected they will not recover. Fungicide applications are best left for professional landscapers. Fungicides that target Downy Mildew might offer short-term protection for

healthy plants only. Fungicides would need to be reapplied throughout the season to keep healthy plants protected and there are no guarantees that it will work. The disease is inside the plant making it impossible to recover. Due to the lack of successful treatment options, plants with this disease should be removed, roots, soil and all and then bagged and destroyed. Do not compost infected plants or depend on fungicides. If left in the garden, there is a high risk this disease will overwinter and infect Impatiens in future years.

↙ So what does all of this mean for your garden this spring?

Above: Yellow, wilted leaves and minimal flowers indicate Impatiens infected with Downy Mildew. Right: Examples of the white powdery underside of infected Impatiens leaves. The leaf on the far right is an example of an uninfected plant.

At Bucks Country Gardens, we are expecting smaller shipments of Impatiens than ever before. However, we will still have an abundance of fantastic options for your shade loving areas. Here are some of our favorites:

b ego n i a s

Talk about foolproof: The Begonia is about as easy as it gets. It does well in a variety of conditions, but performs best in light shade with rich, well-drained soil and ample water. It also loves plenty of fertilizer, so be generous. Plant Begonias in spring after all danger of frost has passed. No need to deadhead this flower, it’s “self-cleaning!”

Some of our favorite varieties:

These tropical plants really shine in containers, where they thrive in the perfect soil and drainage, but they also do well in the ground as long as you take the time to improve the soil and work in plenty of compost. Note that they’re a bit more sun-tolerant than common impatiens.

Providing color pizzazz in dim places where flowers can’t, Caladiums have come into their own recently with the craze for tropical plants. The clumping, heart-shape leaves are available in a variety of veined patterns in colors from cream to pinks, reds, silvers and greens.

Add excitement to dim areas of your yard with shade-loving Coleus varieties. An amazing array of color combinations are available, as well as leaf textures–choose from plants with scalloped, toothed or fringed leaf edges. Coleus is exceptionally easy to grow: Plant in a shaded spot, keep the soil moist and feed regularly. One of our favorite varieties is the Kong Series–featuring extremely large leaves and wonderfully unique patterns.

Torenia, also dubbed ‘Clown Flower’ for its vividly marked flowers that resemble the face of a clown, is a wonderful, relatively new choice for shade. The flower shape resembles tiny snapdragons, mouths wide open and showing off delicate throats marked with a contrasting color. This little clown flower blooms nonstop until frost. Our favorite varieties includes Gilded Grape and Summer Wave.

Hydrangea ‘Pistachio’

One look at these spectacular blooms tells you that ‘Pistachio’ is the Hydrangea you’ve got to grow this season. There are many benefits to this shrub in addition to its four season color show! It offers better disease resistance than older Hydrangea varieties, and it’s so compact, you can grow it in a container! Also, its stems do a much better job of holding up the heavy blooms–none of the flopping you see on older shrubs. Best grown in part shade, ‘Pistachio’ will begin to bloom in late spring with a heavy repeat in early fall.

Coreopsis ‘Mercury Rising’

Nepeta ‘Junior Walker’ Catmint

46

Bucks Country Gardens

Coreopsis ‘Mercury Rising’

This new Coreopsis promises to become a favorite of gardeners and landscapers alike, no matter what their gardening skill level. From early summer through early fall, ‘Mercury Rising’ is covered in lustrous, velvety wine red blossoms with a golden orange button in the center. Some flowers are lightly frosted with a touch of creamy white on the petals. Place this Coreopsis in full sun and the flowers will expand as they age, maturing to a large 1½”–2” size. Since ‘Mercury Rising’ is sterile, no deadheading or other maintenance is required to keep it blooming over a long period of time. It’s deer resistant and attracts butterflies and honeybees. Coreopsis ‘Mercury Rising’ is an awesome addition to any garden.

Nepeta ‘Junior Walker’ Catmint

This compact Nepeta retains the non-reseeding quality of its popular parent ‘Walker’s Low’ at one-third its size. Nepeta ‘Junior Walker’ features blue-green foliage that contrasts nicely with lavender-blue flowers for a long blooming window from mid-May through September.

Coreopsis ‘Mercury Rising’

‘Heartthrob’ Kousa Dogwood

‘Heartthrob’ Kousa Dogwood

This compact Catmint only reaches about 18” tall and works best in full sun. ‘Junior Walker’ can be used in borders, mixed containers and along paths and walkways. Nepeta ‘Junior Walker’ is rabbit and deer resistant and attracts butterflies, making it perfect for your Bucks County garden!

‘Heartthrob’ Kousa Dogwood

Fall in love with the ‘Heartthrob’ Kousa Dogwood once you see its large reddish to rose-pink flowers unfurl in the spring. Attractive dark green foliage turns deep red in the fall, when red fruits of about 3/4” diameter also provide seasonal interest. Mature height and spread is approximately 20’. Its long lasting red flowers start blooming in late May giving your landscape amazing color. ‘Heartthrob’ prefers sun to partial shade and welldrained soil. This Dogwood is sure to have everyone in the neighborhood envying your curb appeal.

Gardenia ‘Kleim’s Hardy’

Gardenia ‘Kleim’s Hardy’

Gardenia ‘Kleim’s Hardy’

Hibiscus ‘Heartthrob’

Hibiscus ‘Heartthrob’

This Hibiscus is the darkest red flower we’ve seen in a while. Near-black glossy, pointy buds open to glossy, dramatic deep red blossoms with a blackish red center and veining. Bright yellow pollen on the red anthers in the center of each blossom pops with contrast. The 8”–10” wide blossoms have rounded, overlapping petals with a hint of ruffling on the edges. ‘Heartthrob’ forms a compact, well-branched, rounded clump of mid-green, Hydrangea-like leaves. At just 4’ tall, this Hibiscus can take full sun to part shade and blooms mid-late summer. Use this sultry stunner to attract hummingbirds as well.

buckscountrygardens.com

Here is the Gardenia you’ve been looking for: so compact you can grow it in containers, so cold-hardy you can grow it outdoors, and so fragrant you’ll think you’ve gone to Gardenia heaven. ‘Kleim’s Hardy’ is a petite shrub, just 2’ –3’ high and wide, very well branched and densely clothed in glossy, dark green evergreen leaves. The blooms are pure white, single and six-petaled, and their scent is absolutely unforgettable. Slow growing, this shrub forms a little mound with the impact of a much larger plant. Expect the blooms in late spring and early summer, and get ready to be wowed!

Problem Solving

IN THE GARDEN

Ahhh, Spring! It’s easy to ignore some of the common problems. In addition to gorgeous flowers and new growth, Spring can bring bug, weeds and disease. We’ve listed the most common problems you ask about at our garden pharmacy every year.

c APRIL

crabgrass ➲

A creeping broadleaf grass that can become a serious weed.

SOLUTION: Around April 15, spread Scotts’ Lawn Pro Crabgrass Control.

➲ ➲

blackspot on roses As the name suggests, this fungus starts as black spots fringed with yellow rings. Leaves will eventually fall off. SOLUTION: As a preventative, use Bayer Rose & Flower Care every six weeks using the drench method. If you already have blackspots, suppress with Bonide Infuse Systemic Disease Control.

49

Evergreens, Hollies, Spruces, Cherry Laurels

c

White spots on bark and on underside of leaves. May also see a brown bump on the leaf.

SOLUTION: Apply Bonide All Seasons Horticultural Oil directly onto the plant, especially the stems and underside of leaves.

MAY

hemlock wooly adelgid ➲

Copious amounts of white filament of wax on the underside and around the bases of branches.

SOLUTION: Use Bonide All Seasons Horticultural Oil spray to smother the wax or pour Bayer Tree & Shrub Protect & Feed at the base and drench the roots.

needle cast fungus Pines, Spruces, Douglas Firs

“Needle Cast” is the collective term given to diseases caused by several fungi. This results in needle-less branches taking on a purple appearance before turning brown and dropping.

SOLUTION: Use Bonide Infuse Systemic Disease Control. Apply enough liquid to wet entire surface of plant.

anthracnose

Beans, Curcurbits, Vegetables & Various Trees

c

Due to wet weather, cankers form on plants. Infected leaves often drop prematurely. Diseased stems and twigs die back.

SOLUTION: To kill on contact, apply Zerotol Fungicide Bactericide every two weeks.

JUNE

moles, voles & groundhogs ➲

Look for plants that are heaved from the ground, roots that are severed and lawns that are disfigured.

SOLUTION: Sprinkle granular Bonide Repels-All around any plants the rodents are targeting.

SOLUTION: Apply Sevin Ready-to-Use Spray directly on bugs for a contact kill. You can also install Safer Japanese Beetle Traps on your lawn.

squash vine borers Squash, Cucumbers & Melons

Stems suddenly wilt and die. Greenish, sawdust-like excrement piles up around small entry holes near stem bases and on the ground.

SOLUTION: As a preventative, apply Bonide Garden Dust on top and underside of plant every 7–10 days. Additionally, spray Bonide Malathion Insect Control directly onto vines weekly.

tomato horn worm Tomatoes, Eggplant, Potatoes, Peppers

Curbside Makeover~ create a colorful mailbox garden Is your postal carrier underwhelmed by your mailbox? Dress it up with a charming, small-space mailbox garden, which features a variety of low-care, longblooming annuals and perennials for a burst of front yard color all summer long. While most mailboxes are far from the house and face full sun all day, they are often subject to harsh roadside conditions as heat radiates off the road and exhaust fumes fill the air. It takes some pretty tough plants to put up with those challenging growing conditions. Keeping the height of your mailbox in mind, plant in proportion by putting tall plants closest to the post, then work your way outward with smaller plants and ground covers. The plants included here stay under two feet in height so they won’t block your view as you pull out of the driveway. With a garden like this, you’ll enjoy your daily visit to the mailbox, even if your postal carrier has left nothing but bills.

Plan a garden around your mailbox for an inviting and cheerful look.

Who is Sustainable Waste Solutions? The folks at Sustainable Waste Solutions (SWS) are really busy these days. Founded by Randy Hendricks in 2004 as a special waste brokerage serving the pharmaceutical industry, the Souderton, PA based company expanded their horizons and bought their first truck five years ago. Scott Woodrow, the company’s COO, explains that buying that first Mack truck set them on a course that today finds them servicing many local businesses with their environmentally-friendly trash and recycling services. What’s so green about trash? What really sets SWS apart from everyone else in their industry is that they are the only trash company that is Landfill Free. According to Dieter Scheel, VP of Marketing and Business Development, everything that SWS picks up from its customers is either reused, recycled or converted into clean, renewable energy. This focus on sustainability has caught the attention of many of the region’s most recognizable corporations and institutions. Their customers include Merck, Lehigh University, Kraft Foods, Just Born, The Philadelphia Eagles, TEVA , Rodon (maker of K’NEX toys), Asher’s Chocolates, Brandywine Realty Trust and starting in 2013 Bucks Country Gardens.

Going green with trucks... Environmental responsibility is the reason that Randy and Scott decided to purchase the region’s first Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trash truck. In spite of the additional cost (a CNG Peterbilt costs $350,000, about $50,000 more than a comparable diesel), they felt that the benefits would be worth the increased cost. Their CNG truck is 80% quieter and produces 20% less greenhouse gases than a typical diesel trash truck. Customers and drivers are often surprised to see white vapor coming from the stack, instead of the dark smoke that most trash trucks produce. CNG has worked so well that the company has two more on order, with plans to convert the rest of the fleet over time – something their drivers are looking forward to. I see in the future... As SWS moves into the future, they continue to look to the best available technologies to help their customers become even more sustainable. Composting, Electronics Waste Recycling and specialty recycling services have all been added to the company’s services in the past year.

TEXTURED PLANTS ARE IRRESISTIBLE. If your conditions are right for them, include the fuzzy woolly thyme and lambs’ ears, the prickly coneflower and the delicate maidenhair fern and columbine.

If you’re looking for an engaging outdoor activity that allows the whole family to participate, consider a family garden. From selecting your vegetables and flowers, preparing the earth and planting, and finally harvesting, gardening can be a wonderful way to involve your children in a healthy hobby you can all enjoy. Along with the fun of getting dirty, gardening helps children learn valuable lessons about patience as they wait for vegetables to grow, responsibility as they see how necessary their care is to the garden, and even loss when flowers die at the end of a season. They learn about nurturing a life and what it takes to keep something alive. In addition to these benefits, spending time outside has been consistently shown to improve children’s sleep, eyesight, stress levels and performance in school. Time in the garden spent running around, picking fruits and vegetables or digging some dirt wears them out and calms them down. Too little outside time can lead to a vitamin D deficiency, which puts kids at a higher risk for asthma and can also affect bone growth, density, metabolism heart and immunity.

Are you unsure of which plants to put in your family garden? Although they don’t differentiate when it comes to flowers over vegetables, annuals versus perennials, kids do have their handsdown favorites.

PICKABLE PLANTS ALSO GET THE THUMBS UP FROM KIDS. Children should have free reign over their own cut flower garden. Cosmos, snapdragon, salvia, zinnia, coleus and celosia are just a few that produce more vigorously if picked. Besides these high performing plants, parents shouldn’t overlook common annuals or tender perennials that bloom reliably all summer long. Include these hard workers your garden mix: FULL SUN: Geraniums Morning Glories Marigolds Nasturtiums Petunias Salvia Snapdragons Sunflowers

KIDS LIKE EXTREMES: huge flowers, like the classic sunflower, and small vegetables like cherry tomatoes. Try plants that come in surprising colors, such as purple carrots, striped beets, rainbow chard and ‘Easter Egg’ radishes.

FRAGRANT PLANTS TRANSPORT THE IMAGINATION. If you grow them now, your child will always remember the scent of heliotrope, roses, peonies and lilacs. If you show them which plants to rub between their fingers, they will never forget lavender, lemon balm, rosemary, basil and scented geraniums.
