What is Bucks Xtra?

June Xtra edition By Emily West

What is Bucks Xtra? After a difficult year, we are excited to have events running all week for you in Bucks Xtra week! This week we will be bringing you a series of training events, rec activities and events every evening to keep you entertained and hopefully make up slightly for all the experiences missed this year. We kick off the Monday with our British Sign Language taster session where you can learn some basic sign language and decide whether this is something you would like to learn more of next academic year as we run levels 1, 2 and 3 sign language through the year. We also have tickets to the Art of Banksy exhibit in London completely free to you, but with limited spaces, make sure to visit our website and reserve your space. On Tuesday enjoy a free trip to Go Ape in the beautiful Wendover Woods. Take on the Treetop Challenge. Test yourself – the longest crossing is 20 metres and the highest platform is a jaw-clenching 14 metres skywards. One thing is for sure, a day out to this course will leave you buzzing! Wednesday we have the first of our face to face employability training sessions, with networking running in the morning. Learn more about this important skill and how to build up your own networks to help find a job when you graduate. We have also arranged a mini bus to take you to the Donkey Sanctuary in Wallingford where you can take some therapy time, learning about how they have been rescued and seeing how happy they are now.

Thursday burn off some extra energy at Rush trampoline park! Reserve your free ticket to enjoy one hour of uninterrupted jump time with up to 5 of your friends. To finish on Friday, we have time management running for you in the morning, or if you prefer something more active, get your free ticket to Lagoona park, where you get 50 minutes inflatable water park fun, before relaxing in the onsite bar overlooking the lake! For full details of all our great evening events this week and to reserve your place on any of the above, please visit the What’s On page of our website. In addition to these exciting opportunities, your University also has a diverse schedule of events running throughout the week, which you can find the timetable for online, bucks.ac.uk/bucks-xtra or on pages 4-5. If you have any ideas or suggestions for training or rec activities you would like to see available next year, we would love to hear from you! Please either pop down to see us in the Students’ Union office or drop us an email at sutraining@bucks.ac.uk. Enjoy your Bucks Xtra week and make the most of it!

Leadership Academy

June Xtra edition By Emily West

Leadership Academy

The Big Deal. Now more than ever, having extra skills recorded on your CV and expanding your network will help you to make your next steps when leaving university. Development activities will be sympathetic to studies, it really is an individual programme designed around you! It will be manageable for students at all levels and a typical programme will include:

Applications are now open for our next cohort of 25 students to next year’s Leadership Academy! Given the current climate, it has never been more important to focus on building up your skills and having a clear set of goals to achieve by the time you leave university to search for your first job. Whether you know exactly what you want to do, or are still deciding, the Leadership Academy can help equip you to give you the best possible advantage when leaving university. The Leadership Academy was developed to recognise the value of developing future leaders early on. It is a bespoke development programme for talented students to gain specific skills for routes through the Union into leadership roles. It’s a series of training, courses and opportunities to enhance employability and build leadership traits - all free of charge courtesy of

One to one sessions to agree your leadership development route and monitor progress - We will discuss your career aspirations with you, propose and agree a personal development plan with clear objectives and deadlines and review your progress throughout the academic year through regular emails and meetings. Workshops focusing on leadership styles and self-awareness - Through an external agency, we would fund and deliver formal leadership training which would provide you with workplace critical skills. We can also offer a free Strengthscope personality profile to help you understand your key strengths and how to use these to your advantage. Accredited training courses specific to your chosen route - We can provide licensing qualifications and legislation compliant certificates for those in the hospitality industry; safeguarding or coaching qualifications for those in the sports industry; your development programme will be specific to your route and we will source the experience that you need. We can fund specific external courses either online or in person to help you meet your goals.

Employability sessions focussing on CV’s, interviews, applications and assessment centres - Group sessions in all of the above will be scheduled regularly alongside the University’s Careers and Employability Service. One to one sessions are also available with both the Students’ Union and the University. Access to networking opportunities through conferences, staff days and external events - There may be a national or industry specific conference that we agree will benefit your leadership journey and you will be invited to be involved with Students’ Union meetings and development days and consulted with when we have new initiatives or policy to implement. Mentors – we will discuss in the initial meeting whether you could benefit from a mentor either in or related to your chosen industry who can give you real-life tips and advice on how to get your foot in the door and progress in your career. Plus full support of the Students’ Union Development Team through one to one meetings, reflective developmental sessions and assistance with finding your ideal leadership role. Once you have completed the year, you will receive a certificate of completion plus a free Leadership Academy hoodie! Bucks Award

The Bucks Student

BUCKS AWARD Acknowledging commitment & celebrating success

Creating a CV from scratch can seem like a daunting task, whether you are applying for part time work to help support you through university or whether you are starting to look for jobs in your industry once you leave university. This is where the Bucks Award can help you! Every time you participate in an activity with us, be it volunteering, a skills session or securing a committee role, we have a record of it and are now able to collate these records to really showcase your involvement through the Bucks Award. The Bucks Award is divided into sections with the idea that by the time you leave university you have something in every section – a completely achievable goal due to all the free opportunities you have access to thanks to the Big Deal. So when it comes to writing your CV, when you are looking for skills that really demonstrate your ability to communicate, manage your time and your attention to detail, you will have a readymade list of transferrable skills to include.

For this reason, we also offer Bucks Award sessions, where we are able to produce your Bucks Award on request and use this selfreflective session, to really help you understand all the skills you have gained from your involvement with our activities and how each of these can be transferred into the workplace. These sessions can be booked directly with the Training and Development team, by emailing sutraining@bucks.ac.uk. Although it is recommended all meetings are virtual at the moment, if you would prefer to meet in person, we can currently offer meetings in person with a maximum of 2 attendees, so please just let us know in your email!

Varsity 2021

The Bucks Student By Tom Featherstone

H1 We were all looking forward to the possibility of our annual Varsity fixtures against Roehampton going ahead as usual, but with COVID-19 restrictions in place, it was looking uncertain. Fortunately, in accordance with Government guidelines and the guidelines from the relative sporting bodies, we were able to play several friendly fixtures. Varsity this year was a different affair, with fixtures at both University’s and no spectators allowed. As your Vice President Student Involvement, Tom, pointed out in the lead up to the big day, “It’s been 448 days since the last Bucks team took the field, despite there not being spectators, we’re still playing for the win.” The day started with Football 2’s playing at home in a high scoring game, with 5 players scoring at least 1 goal and final match score of 7 – 4. Football 4’s unfortunately didn’t get the chance to play, meaning a walk over to us. Buckinghamshire New University 2 – Roehampton 0. At 2:00pm we saw Football 1’s and 3’s, Netball 2’s and Mixed Hockey kick off their games and as the scores came in, it was looking good. Football 1’s scored a further 6 and secured their win with the result being 6 -2. Football 3’s kept up the high scoring games and won 4 – 0. Netball 2’s who haven’t won against Roehampton in Varsity since 2013 won their game 23 -19. Mixed hockey kept it close till half time trailing 2-1, but then Roehampton’s experienced squad stepped up in the second half, with the final result for hockey being 7-1 to Roehampton.

Buckinghamshire New University 5 – Roehampton 1. Women’s Basketball were next to play and with our indoor sports teams only having had one training session before their game and with a depleted squad, it was a brilliant result for Bucks when the team won their game 65 -43, with1 substitute. Netball 1’s played a brilliant game with the match see-sawing between both teams, Roehampton managed to pull ahead in the last 10 minutes giving them their second win of the day by 9, with a final Netball match score of 22 – 31 to Roehampton. The last 2 games were Rugby and Men’s Basketball and Men’s Basketball felt they had a point to prove after Roehampton knocked them out of the cup last academic year. Both matches were enjoyable to watch and both teams applied the pressure in the second half of their game. Rugby won 55 -31 and Men’s Basketball won 83 – 45. Final result Buckinghamshire New University 8 – Roehampton 2. A big thank you to Neal Reynolds and all the Sports Therapy students who provided their support and help on the day. Last, but definitely not least, thanks to all those committee members who kept their clubs going through an incredibly difficult year - we’re so proud of all of your hard work. And a big well done to all our teams who played!

Union Awards / AU Dinner

June Xtra edition By Tristan Tipping

In the evening of Thursaday 20 May, we held our twelfth annual Union Awards incorporating the Excellence in Learning and Teaching awards (ELT’s) and this year, because of unusual circumstances, the AU Dinner. It’s always a tremendous pleasure to recognise the acheivements of the students and staff of Buckinghmashire New University, and this year was no exception. In an exceptional 12 months we have seen our members go above and beyond to suport their peers and give their time freely for the betterment of the student experience which is what makes the Bucks community so special. It was incredible to be able to host some of the event in our own venue for a socially distanced celebration and we also have the video from the night available for all to re-watch. Thanks again to everybody who contributed this year, supported the unions work, and showed tremendoues tenacity and dynamism, it’s been truly inspirational.

Give to Refresh

June Xtra edition By Jade Collis

Last academic year Bucks Students’ Union collaborated with the University and together created “Give to refresh”. Give to Refresh was created as both organisations believe that being clean is a basic human right, not a luxury or privilege and no one should have to live in hygiene poverty. Give To Refresh is in association with the Beauty Banks charity, who link donations of personal care and hygiene products for women and men to local registered charities (including food banks, homeless centres, refugees and secondary schools) so that what’s donated locally, stays local. Since the launch of this campaign we have had 889 donations, these donations were given to one of our community charity partners, One Can Trust. Two student volunteers packed up the mini

bus and donated a range of items from personal hygiene, baby bits and skin care. One can trust will now give these items in parcels to people in need. We are always looking for donations for Give To Refresh as we hope other local charity partners will sign up for this initiative and we will be able to spread the donations to all organisations. If you own any personal hygiene products that you don’t think you will use, why not drop them off at one of our Beauty Bank drop off points. We have these drop off points at all 3 campus, For high Wycombe there is a drop off point at the main reception and within both the High Wycombe and Uxbridge Students’ Union offices.

What can be donated? Any unused and unopen beauty or hygiene products can be donated. This will give your items a new home and prevent them ending up in landfill. Any of the items on the poster above can be donated.
