We commend and salute our resilient farmers, whether crop farmers, livestock farmers or fish farmers, on their outstanding contribution over the years as they work hard in the face of all adversities to not only feed our nation, but also to contribute to the growth and expansion of the agricultural sector.

2022 represents a year of performance with a 10 % increase in domestic crop production that saw us surpassing 800,000 tonnes for the first time. With determination, commitment and partnership Jamaica has achieved seven consecutive quarters of growth in the agricultural sector and we intend to continue these positive trends with major investments, improvements and innovations in the sector.

So, to our farmers we say thank you. Your hard work and perseverance have not gone unnoticed as you Grow Smart to feed our nation.

I want to especially say thank you to our Budding Farmers who are our future and continue to play a key role in our industry. It is crucial that we equip them with a smart mindset and build their capacity to steer our nation’s agriculture and fisheries sector towards a progressive path for the foreseeable future.

Let me also assure you that your minister and your ministry remain committed to enhancing farmers access to resources, support and financing and we remain dedicated to protecting your interests as we strive to advance food and nutrition security and earn foreign exchange through export.

As we continue to salute our farmers for the entire month of April, I urge all sector stakeholders to “Grow Smart” in an effort to increase productivity and establish food security, with the broader goal of encouraging all of Jamaica to “Eat Smart”.

Finally, I urge all Jamaicans to buy more local produce for farmer’s month and join hands as we celebrate and uplift the hardworking men, women and youth, who continue to feed our nation.

Thank you. One love.

Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr., M.P Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries
