This past week Deb Davis, Community Outreach Manager of PAWS With A Cause, shared about PAWS mission to enhance the independence and quality of life for people with disabilities nationally through custom-trained Assistance Dogs. Click here to view the full length call notes or click here to be directed to their website. PRESENTATION SUMMARY: PAWS With A Cause was founded in 1979 on the premise of a friend helping a friend. The organization was fostered out of a case of a family with hearing impairments needing a trained assistance dog to hear their baby's cries. PAWS trains four types of dogs; hearing dogs, service dogs, seizure response dogs, and trained dogs for individuals with autism. On average 65 to 70 teams, of owner and dog, are trained per year. Extensive Application Process: Must submit basic information, details regarding disability, extent of progress, and prognosis. Primary care physician to fill out section of application. Application is evaluated by headquarters to determine whether applicant is in a geographic region serviceable by the organization. Interview process. Training process in home environment, with potential owners. Veterans and their family members are provided with 3 of the 4 types of trained dogs--hearing dogs, service dogs, and seizure response dogs. VA provides routine medical care for dogs. Dogs required to wear jacket to show they are trained through PAWS.
