Buffalo goes BLUE for PARKINSON’S Why it’s important to become better aware of this movement-oriented disease

A

pril is National Parkinson’s Awareness Month. Michael J. Fox and Muhammad Ali helped bring the disease out of the darkness, and reports that George H. W. Bush, Linda Ronstadt, Robin Williams, Jesse Jackson, Neil Diamond, and other public figures have been diagnosed have shined even greater light on the disease’s prevalence. Parkinson’s is a movement disorder. It strikes a part of the brain that controls muscle movements. Over time, it can also affect memory, cognition, sleep, digestion, and other body functions. At this time, there is no cure for the disease, but there are treatments that can ease the symptoms. Research has, of late, made strides in better understanding the disease, and in identifying new pathways to effective treatments. Parkinson’s can strike anyone, no matter the gender, ethnicity, or social standing. While it is often assumed to be associated with aging, Parkinson’s has been diagnosed in Western New Yorkers in their twenties, thirties, and forties. Most often, the disease evolves gradually; on average, the disease has been progressing for six to eight years before it’s recognized and diagnosed. There are no laboratory

tests or electronic scans that reveal the disease, so diagnosing it can be challenging. Neurologists identify characteristic physical indications, and when those symptoms respond to specific medications, a diagnosis is made. Awareness of Parkinson’s is important both because of the challenge in diagnosing it and its rising prevalence. Alzheimer’s disease has long been recognized as the most common neurological ailment, but a recently completed twenty-five-year study by the international Global Burden of Disease project has shown that the rate of cases of Parkinson’s increased eight times faster than Alzheimer’s over that period. A better understanding of the disease will not only create a more accommodating environment for those battling it, but will also better inform the community about this life-changing affliction. It is not unusual for someone with Parkinson’s to become socially isolated. Tremors, postural instability, or difficulty speaking can make them feel less inclined to be in public. Friends who don’t know how to deal with Parkinsonian symptoms may distance themselves. Awareness about the disease can overcome these concerns. Companionship is great medicine;

in fact, a program is in development whereby businesses and their staff can learn more about the disease in order to become recognized as Parkinson’s friendly environments. To raise awareness, the color blue will be featured throughout the city in April. A number of local landmarks will be illuminated blue for at least a portion of the month. Homes will use blue bulbs in porch or driveway lights to extend the azure glow throughout the region. “Wear Blue Days” are being planned for offices and schools. A paper logo cutout program is being adopted by many businesses to help raise awareness and much needed funding. Until there is a cure for Parkinson’s disease, it is vital for all of us to better understand what it is and how it affects those who have it—people who could be family and friends. To learn more, please contact the Parkinson’s Foundation, Western New York Chapter. Educational opportunities, support groups, therapeutic programming, and social events are all available. Visit parkinson.org or call 716 449-3795 for information and to participate in any April awareness events.

Seniors: Beware of Scams BY PATRICK SULLIVAN

I

n the past few years, the number and frequency of scams targeting seniors has increased. These scams range in type, contact method, and intended victims, but all are intended to either obtain personal information or money. Being alert to these scams and helping make the community aware are good ways to prevent yourself or a family member from becoming a victim. Because seniors may be perceived as vulnerable or easy to get information or money from, older adults are most often the first choice for a potential victim for a scammer. In response to this, the NYS Division of Consumer Protection and AARP list many scams that elderly individuals should be aware of and ways to counteract them. Some types of scams include IRS scams, medical device scams, and scams suggesting some kind of sweepstakes have been won. It is important to note that if you are contacted in any way about something that seems fishy or coming from nowhere, it could be a possible scam, including an individual or company that you are unfamiliar with contacting you to request your personal information or some type of payment. AARP understands that scams are on the rise. According to Doug Shadel from the AARP Bulletin, there were more than “29 billion in 2016 alone by one estimate, including lots of potential rip-offs. No wonder fraud

complaints have increased nearly 60 percent since 2010, according to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).” Scammers can often use personal information to try and trick their targets. They might know your name, phone number or address, or even family details. How do they get this information? According to another AARP Bulletin, “They buy it or steal it, says the FTC. And sometimes, we give it right to them. Semi-intimate details about our lives often are available online for anyone willing to dig.” A lot of personal information can also be found on social media. Sharing personal information on social media, or online in general, can be dangerous. If you’re going to do so, be cautious about what you share and with whom you share it. Here are some important tips suggested by the NYS Division of Consumer Protection to help individuals become aware of or prevent an intended scam: Always confirm the identity of the person you are speaking with over the phone, especially if it is a business or organization. Get some information on what type of business is contacting you and for what reason. If it seems suspicious or unfamiliar, hang up immediately. Keep in mind that scammers can manipulate their Caller ID to reflect a certain area code or telephone number. Never provide personal or financial information to an unknown or

unconfirmed source. These include things like Social Security number, credit card number, or even common information like your name or date of birth. Do not open emails or attachments from strangers or an unfamiliar or suspicious source. If you receive an email or attachment from anything or anyone you are unfamiliar with, delete it immediately. If you would like your phone number listed to block robocalls contact your telephone provider or register your number on the National Do Not Call Registry. To help protect your computer, install protection/security antivirus software and consciously keep it updated. Here are some tips from AARP to help identify a potential phone scam and how to handle it: Do some research on who is calling you. Try doing an internet search on the salesperson and company before you give out any information or money. If you cannot locate any solid information, or the company does not exist, it is a scam. Try to keep your reactions in check. No matter how much the scammer threatens you or claims that the reason they are calling is urgent, try not

to panic or act irrationally. Always hang up and give yourself time to think it over and do some research. If you decide it is fishy, do not answer future calls or just hang up on scammers. Most important, it is always good to trust your instincts. If you think it could be a scam or sounds suspicious, trust your gut and hang up. An example of one popular scam to be aware of is the IRS scam. Victims are often contacted via phone or email to be told that they owe money to the IRS. The IRS does not and will not contact individuals who owe money or have issues with taxes over the phone or through email. IRS concerns are always handled through the United States Postal Service with the IRS making first contact. The IRS will also never ask an individual for payment via wire transfer or prepaid debit card. If you are contacted by anyone claiming to be the IRS by any method that is not through the US mail, it is a scam. These types of scammers may also already have some personal information to make them appear more realistic. Do not be tricked by this into giving out any more information or making any payments. If you do believe you owe the IRS or have other concerns, contact the IRS directly at irs.gov. Scams can be very convincing and very frightening. Just because you may receive a call or email from a scammer does not mean you should be afraid to answer your phone or look at your emails. Being prepared to identify a scam and being wary of anything that seems too good to be true are excellent steps to take to prevent falling victim to a scam. If you want to find out more about scams there are many resources available to use. The NYS Division of Consumer Protection can be found by visiting the NYS Department of State website at www.dos. ny.gov and accessing Consumer Protection under “Divisions.” AARP also provides information on their website www.aarp.org in Consumer Protection under the “Money” section. Finally, if you are contacted by a scammer, you can contact your local police department to make a statement. Everyone should know that scams are part of our modern age, and be prepared to protect themselves. Patrick Sullivan is a Medaille College student and intern at Buffalo Spree Publishing.

The ABCs of Immunotherapy — and What’s in the Pipeline at Roswell Park By Sue Banchich, senior writer/editor, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center

What is immunotherapy? In a nutshell, it’s a treatment designed to strengthen a patient’s own immune system so it can successfully fight disease. Immunotherapies for cancer have come a long way in just the past eight years: In 2010, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first cancer-treatment vaccine (Provenge ®, for late-stage prostate cancer). In October 2017, the FDA gave the green light to a second CART cell therapy, Yescarta™ (for refractory large B-cell lymphoma), following its August approval of Kymriah™ for children and young adults with a specific type of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Kunle Odunsi, MD, PhD, deputy director and executive director of the Center for Immunotherapy (CFI) at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, says immunotherapies have several advantages over standard treatments. Unlike chemotherapy or radiation, they target cancer cells only, not healthy cells; they produce long-term remission in some patients; many patients experience milder side effects with immunotherapies than with standard treatments; and immunotherapies can sometimes be effective in patients whose tumors have not responded to chemotherapy or radiation. Types of immunotherapies Roswell Park is one of very few institutions in the United States equipped to offer clinical trials of a full range of immunotherapies. The Cancer Center meets the FDA’s very strict standards for manufacturing both cellular therapies and vaccines. Having the manufacturing facilities next to the hospital speeds the delivery of the treatments to patients. It also means Roswell Park can launch its own immunotherapy clinical trials and participate in multi-center trials, making more options available to eligible patients. How do these treatments work,

92

BUFFALO SPREE MAGAZINE

APRIL 2018

and what new immunotherapy clinical trials are underway or close to being launched? Here’s a brief introduction. Adoptive T cell therapy Adoptive T cell therapy begins when T lymphocytes, or T cells— the frontline soldiers of the immune system—are taken out of a patient’s blood sample. The T cells are then reengineered so that they produce T cell receptors, which help the T cells track down and destroy cancer cells. The super-charged T cells are then multiplied into an army of millions or billions and given back to the patient in the hope that they will help the immune system destroy the cancer. Therapeutic cancer vaccines Neoantigen (personalized) vaccines Neoantigens are molecules produced by DNA mutations in cancer cells. They are present in cancer cells only, not in healthy cells. Neoantigens are collected from a patient’s tumor and used to manufacture a personalized vaccine designed to hunt down and destroy the cancer cells in that specific patient. Allogeneic vaccines Some vaccines work by targeting specific proteins found in tumors. Unlike neoantigen vaccines, which are customized to each patient, the same “off the shelf ” allogeneic vaccine can be given to different patients. Roswell Park offers allog eneic vaccines through clinical trials, as well as the FDA-approved vaccine Provenge ® for eligible patients with late-stage prostate cancer. Checkpoint inhibitors Cancer cells essentially “put the brakes on the immune system when it should be doing its job to kill those cells,” says Dr. Odunsi. Investigators at Roswell Park’s Center for Immunotherapy have identified several checkpoints, or molecules that put the brakes on the patient’s immune response, and are focusing on three of those—PD1, CTLA4, and IDO —to help improve the effectiveness

of therapeutic cancer vaccines. “We are one of the first to combine our vaccines with these immune modulators, or checkpoints,” explains Dr. Odunsi. “We have ongoing clinical trials where we not only vaccinate to generate immune cells, but also to limit the ability of checkpoints.” Oncolytic virotherapies An oncolytic virus is a special type of virus that infects and damages cancer cells but leaves healthy cells alone. Over the past three years, says Dr. Odunsi, Roswell Park’s CFI, has been working with different oncolytic viruses, which may also weaken cancer cells to make them more vulnerable to chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Roswell Park immunotherapy offerings include: Adoptive T cell therapies. Adoptive T cell transfer enhances the natural cancer-fighting ability of the body’s T cell or T lymphocyte, a type of white blood cell. Therapeutic cancer vaccines. Cancer vaccines work against cancer by boosting your immune system’s response to cancer cells. They trigger the immune system to recognize and attack certain markers, or antigens, present on or within cancer cells. Checkpoint inhibitors. Some proteins in immune cells act as “checkpoints,” or brakes, on the immune system response. Drugs known as checkpoint inhibitors can be used to “release the brakes” on the immune system, allowing a stronger immune attack against cancer. Oncolytic viruses. Oncolytic viruses are viruses that directly kill cancer cells and also activate cells of the immune system, such as dendritic cells and T cells, to target and eliminate cancer.

ou’ve probably heard the talk about Buffalo real estate and the current sellers’ market. According to Buffalo Business First, since 2012, home sales have increased 27.5 percent, and median prices have risen 16.6 percent. Dedicated residents, business owners, politicians, and investors have polished and straightened the Queen City’s crown, and the robust housing market is proof that Buffalo is where people want to be. “2017 had a very strong ending. We saw the highest dollar value in history, with over one billion dollars in home sales,” says, says Rebecca M. VanDorn, 2018 president of the Buffalo Niagara Association of Realtors, who notes that it wasn’t just one

style of home or a handful of neighborhoods that buyers were interested in—just about every home out there is in demand. “It’s our whole market. Sales in various markets continue to see multiple offers. Inventory is historically low— there are more buyers than sellers.” In fact, she notes that because listings in 2017 were down 19.3 percent, the number of days homes sat on the market decreased by twenty-one percent, and sold at higher prices. “The median sales price is up 11.8 percent,” VanDorn says. “This is where we are right now, and what we really need are listings. “Buyers are ready to buy,” she continues. “We anticipate that the spring market is really going to heat up as

soon as the weather clears. Since it usually takes a couple of months to close on a property, buyers are already looking at listings—they’re very motivated. It’s a great time to capitalize on that.” As a seasoned pro, VanDorn has witnessed how feet-dragging can cost you—whether it’s losing your dream home to a buyer quicker on the draw or missing the buyer ready to offer you more for your home. In Buffalo’s red-hot housing market, early birds sit pretty in their nests. “When a house sees five competing offers, that means four people didn’t get it,” VanDorn reasons. “Those people who didn’t find a home in 2017 are still going to be looking this year.” So, what does this housing market energy mean for Buffalo and its suburbs? Tons. New home owners support the nearby hardware stores, supermarkets, coffee shops, and yoga studios. They call plumbers and electricians and landscapers. A municipality full of homeowners creates a stable tax base, which improves services and school districts. When a community boasts thriving businesses, top-notch services, impressive school districts, and, of course, caring neighbors, everyone wants to live there, which leads to…more and higher home sales! The ripple effect continues with increased tourism, new business startups, entertainment, activities, and more. This year’s WNY real estate numbers may even beat last year’s. Like the Bills making the playoffs after a long drought, this sellers’ housing market is something Buffalo could get used to. Rebecca Cuthbert lives, writes, and cares for shelter dogs in Dunkirk.
