Live, shop, give Buffalo By Rebecca Cuthbert
H
olidays remind us to be thankful for family, friends, and the region we call home. And Buffalo’s current renaissance reminds us that there is so much about Western New York’s history, culture, and exciting future to share with others. This season, celebrate the Queen City by giving everyone on your gift list a bit of local flair—whether it’s edible, wearable, or just plain “Buffalovely.” For a gift that’s sure to please, think food—as in Buffalo Bites Food Tours! Instead of catching up with friends over the usual spiked cocoa, take a tour of a Buffalo neighborhood and sample treats along the way. If you’d prefer not crowd an already crowded holiday season, give a BBFT gift certificate—good for any tour, any time (but get tickets early, since tours fill up fast). “On our three-plus hour guided walking tours, guests are treated to delicious food tastings at six to seven different local restaurants and specialty shops. In between tastings, tour-goers sample all of the ‘flavors’ of the city as we explore the history, architecture, and present day vibrancy of some of Buffalo’s and Western New York’s most delicious neighborhoods,” explains founder and BBFT President Laura Reed. Tickets can be purchased at buffalobitesfoodtours.com, in any amount. Suggested denominations are provided for one, two, three, and four tickets. Tours are held rain, shine, sleet, snow, or whatever else Lake Erie dishes out. For more portable food gifts, Trish Mullaney and her sugar plum fairies at Dessert Deli on Maple Road in Williamsville are ready with some made-with-love desserts. cookies to impress your boss at the company potluck, or a basket heaped with delicacies to bring home to your folks, Dessert Deli has you covered. “We bake cookies and other items right here for our gift baskets. We make cookie trays and baskets along with cakes and pies for gift-giving. They are mailed all over the continental US,” says Mullaney. “Sponge candy is in almost every basket that goes out. The baskets and supplies for the actual gifts are from local WNY suppliers.” Check a few names off your list by calling Trish at 689-2115 and placing your order. Living on the shores of Lake Erie, whose moods are mercurial at best, means that no one in Western New York will ever turn down a cozy sweater, crocheted scarf, or Sabres hoodie. Western New Yorkers know the value of layers, but they want to look good in them, too. Hit up these area retailers to pick up gifts that will keep your loved ones snug and styling. Riverside Men’s Shop, in Northtown Plaza on Sheridan Drive in Amherst, has the finest threads for every occasion. When they closed [in 1989], the bolts of fabric that were left [came to] Riverside, and we have continued the tradition.” Riverside also carries Buffalo cufflinks, designed and manufactured by sister store S&E Jewelers. These are created from authentic, circulated Buffalo nickels. Other items include Buffalo polos, quarter-zip sweatshirts, tech

“We’ve got books, calendars, games, glassware, collectibles, signs, candles, blankets, jewelry, plush—just to name a few.” Promoting Buffalo is part of why the Millers love being small business owners here. “We love to support local vendors and keep shopping dollars right here in WNY,” Miller notes. “Wrap up your gifts with some ‘Buffalove’ this season and shop Bay-6, Buffalo Clothing Co., the perfect store for all those former Buffalonians who may have left the area, but [with hearts that] will always call Buffalo home.” Buffalo wrapping paper and Christmas ornaments are in now, special for the holidays! the Martin House. Featured items include the Martin House birdfeeder, the Martin House/Buffalo alphabet print, the Martin House casement window detail, and the Buffalo Trophy Head. (Don’t worry; no Buffalos were harmed in the making of this last item!) Museum Store is open every day; stop in, find a treasure for someone you love, and support the restoration. Abino Mills Glassware, founded by mother-son team Connie and Ted Constantine, have built their business upon a love for Buffalo—something they share with their customers. “People who live here or those who formerly lived here love our local images,” says Connie. “They are iconic to them. We find that many former Buffalonians even request these pieces in their wedding registries.” These images are designed by the Constantines, then etched into bar glasses, decanters, wine glasses, and more. Customers can choose from buffalo designs, the Buffalo lighthouse, the Point Abino lighthouse, a lake freighter from the American Steamship fleet on the Great Lakes, and more. The Constantines can even customize designs such as images of beloved pets, childhood homes, or favorite skylines. “We also have beautiful wine openers that are made of burled wood and finely machined steel, and have silver buffaloes embedded in them,” Connie adds. See abinomills.com to view the gallery of products, set up a gift registry or learn more about their artistic process. New Buffalo Graphics, at 1417 Hertel Avenue, is home to an art gallery and screen printing and embroidery shop. All of NBG’s designs are truly original and 100 percent Buffalo-centric, from its “Cheer Up” New Buffalo Bottling Company ceramic tiles to its “City of No Illusions” t-shirts and more. Keep up with product news by finding “New Buffalo Graphics” on Facebook. The gift shop at the Buffalo and Erie Botanical Gardens offers handmade jewelry from local vendors, with a selection of styles ranging from delicate to trendy. “[Items from] our newest line are made from Buffalo Nickels strung on a silver chain with matching earrings,” says Denise Nichols, guest services and gift shop manager. “In addition to the jewelry, we have a line of stepping stones engraved with an assortment of themes. Each stone was found along the shores of Lake Erie and hand-etched in Buffalo.”
Gardens aren’t the only things featured at the Botanical Gardens. The directors and staff do what they can to stimulate and strengthen the small business economy here in Western New York. “The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens have promoted the local artisan community for many years,” Nichols says. “Promoting small businesses in Western New York allows us to have the one-of-a-kind items you will not find in larger retail outlets. We hope these artists are inspired by the gardens and incorporate that ‘natural feeling’ into future designs.” The Buffalo and Erie Botanical Gardens are open every day except some holidays. See buffalogardens.com, and plan a visit. Don’t forget a gift shop stop before you leave. If your friends are more into fauna than flora, though, they may go “wild” for calendars from Buffalo Zootique. This calendar is filled with beautiful photos of the zoo’s amazing “lodgers,” and the tax-free ten dollar donation goes right back to the animals. For a gift that not even Santa has in stock, purchase a painting by the Buffalo Zoo’s artist-in-residence, Surapa the Indian elephant. She also paints glasses and barware, but be advised— these never stay on the shelves for long. Call Zootique at 837-3900 ext. 110 to check availability (and if folks ask nicely, she occasionally takes orders). The shopping experience at Thin Ice on Elmwood Avenue is like visiting an art gallery, with eye-catching items adorning every display space. “The majority of the gifts at Thin Ice are handcrafted by local artists, making them one-of-a-kind. Additionally, [because] most of the artists reside in and around Buffalo, there is a very proud, Buffalo-themed element to a lot of the items, making them extra great gifts to give,” says owner Therese Deutschlander. Deutschlander adds that supporting local stores and local artists has a profound impact on the local economy. Show your support by visiting Thin Ice to pick up Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa gifts this season, or learn to make your own artwork by attending one of the many art and 2015 | Holiday Shopping Guide | 87

This book documents the history and recent restoration of the Hotel Lafayette, designed by Louise Blanchard Bethune, the first professional female architect. After Bethune’s masterpiece fell into disrepair toward the end of the past century, Buffalo developer Rocco Termini committed to its painstaking restoration. Albarella was there to document the process from start to finish. “The restoration, undertaken by hundreds of highly skilled craftspeople, artists, and contractors using many of the Old World techniques used in the original construction, has become…a labor of love to restore each breathtaking architectural detail,” writes Albarella.
Buffalo Gifts from Village Artisans
According to its website, the Roycroft Copper Shop & Campus Corporation, at 31 S. Grove Street in East Aurora, stocks “a variety of gift items, stationery, and periodicals. An extended library of books featuring the history of the Roycroft Campus and founder Elbert Hubbard, the Arts & Crafts movement, architecture, as well as art books for children to learn while exploring their creative side are all available.”
For beautiful handmade stationery and more, visit cdesignsandillustrations.com. Owner and artist Christa Penner designs all of her products, including greeting cards, art prints, magnets, and ornaments, with a variety of styles to please every shopper. “We have several lines, including ‘feed your inner foodie,’ a line featuring bold illustrated fruits and veggies; our retro line, which showcases favorite pieces from the fifties and sixties; and our Buffalo line which includes both novelty designs as well as illustrations that feature many of the wonderful and beautiful places Buffalo has to offer,” shares Penner. Penner’s favorite thing about making and selling art locally is connecting with customers through her work. “It is so meaningful to me when someone shares with me a memory one of our Buffalo designs has triggered,” she says. “I have been lucky to hear some really great stories from customers. [Having] illustrations of these locations allows people to bring a little bit of that memory home with them, or send it to someone they share the memory with. I just love being a part of that.”
Visit the shop in person or browse the online gallery at roycroftcampuscorporation.com.
You can be a part of it, too, when you give your loved ones the best of Buffalo this year! T
The Hotel Lafayette captures the energy surrounding the hotel’s rebirth, and makes a wonderful gift for those who remember the “old Buffalo” and for those who recognize the importance of the vibrant, hopeful “new Buffalo.” Go to albarellamedia.com to order; there is also a film version.

This colorful resource boasts a comprehensive map of Mexico’s “Tacography,” and readers will be immersed in regional and hyperlocal flavors and techniques, with loads of facts, interviews with tacoficionados, history, glossaries, statistics, and taco arcana. Heirloom Harvest: Modern Daguerreotypes of Historic Garden Treasures
Pickled Delicacies
The creators of this gorgeous art book are Goldman, one of the foremost heirloom plant conservation in the United States and Jerry Spagnoli, an acclaimed daguerreotypist with work in MoMA and the Whitney Museum. Spagnoli has visited Goldman’s 200-acre farm in Rhinebeck, NY, for fifteen years to capture heirloom varieties with the historical daguerreotype process, producing stunning silvery images of daily life on the farm, followed by more than 120 daguerreotype plates of plant varieties. The bright colors usually associated with photos of produce are absent, yet these stark and lusciously detailed images instill in the reader a new appreciation for the wonderful and sometimes weird shapes and textures of heirloom plants.

Excuria Salon and Spa
Beauty tips and timesavers for a festive season By Marianne Potratz
B
etween late November and early January, many of us seek to look our best for celebrations, obligations, and occasions that leave us little time to do it. It’s easy to put ourselves last on the priority list when the to-do list has us rushing from here to there, but this season, consider a beauty gift for yourself, and save some time and energy while you’re at it. In other words, call in the professionals.
Good hair days When you need good hair a few days running—whether for multiple functions or a few days out of town—a professional blowout will leave you looking polished and preserve your style a little longer. Even if you’ve figured out a workable at-home blow-dry, a professional job will leave your hair looking its best, and help it stay that way. “It’s all about the angle,” says Andrea Gorczyca at Excuria Salon and Spa. “A stylist is standing above your head, working to perfect every small section. You physically can’t do that to your own hair, and realistically, who has that kind of time? Depending on your hair type, some women don’t have to do their hair for three to six days after a great blowout.” Hair products also impact the results of your blowout, says the staff at Capello salons. “From shampoo and conditioner, to blow dry serums, to finishing sprays, the proper products work together for great volume and shine. Also, proper round brush technique is critical to the final look.”
Joni Shatkin at Tres Aurae Spa agrees: “The stylist is the most important factor, as they have to analyze the client’s hair as well as the environmental factors. We love the Colorproof products, and also the Loma products for people concerned with allergens.” At Studio M Hair Design, Nicole Bryant uses KMS California products for added volume and amika Headstrong Hairspray for fast-drying, flake-free staying power. Pick up a bottle for at-home use to protect your style against the wind and winter elements. To get the most from a blowout, Michele Huntington and Amy Haynes at The Refinery salon say it’s important to keep your hands off your hair. A few tools and products can also help keep your style looking fresh. “Dry shampoo, a hairdryer, and hot tools will make it last for days without shampooing,” says Hanes. Michele Griffasi, owner of Michele for Hair & Day Spa recommends Aveda’s NEW Shampure Dry Shampoo, which is a non-aerosol powder mist formula. “Anther trick is using Velcro rollers which encourage curl, lift, and smoothness,” she says. Corto’s Salon and Seasons Spa also features Aveda, as well as the Paul Mitchell line of hair care products. The team at Excuria loves Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo, with specific formulas for light or dark hair, to absorb oil, buildup and odor, and leave hair refreshed and volumized.
Dress up your smile
Nothing elevates your look faster than bold lip color, even if it’s the only makeup you wear. For a quick style upgrade, Jennifer Hipwell, spa director at the Spa at White Oaks recommends a rich, vibrant hue. “This is a great time to experiment with red,” she stresses. “With so many to choose from, there is truly a red for everyone, deep crimson being a popular one.” 2015 | Holiday Shopping Guide | 95
If nude lip color is more your speed, Griffasi recommends a color one shade darker than your natural lip color, and using a lip pencil for definition. Can’t decide? Excuria carries a holiday lip color set from bareMinerals called Love At First Kiss, with ten different colors from the Marvelous Moxie Lipstick collection. This set offers ultra-pigmented lipsticks delivering fullcoverage color and a rich, satin finish that leaves lips looking fuller and more voluptuous. If you like to experiment before you buy, visit Beauty Bar at BeautyQuest to try out top-quality cosmetic lines, including the exclusive Sothy’s Paris, the ultimate in luxury professional makeup. The staff will assist you in selecting the perfect color to make the most of your natural beauty. To make any lip color last longer during the holiday party season, Hipwell recommends the following steps: 1. Exfoliate 2. Apply concealer 3. Apply first coat of lip color using a lip brush for precise accuracy 4. Blot (put tissue between your lips and press down) 5. Apply translucent powder 6. Apply last coat of lip color Even if lipstick is not your thing, it’s still a good idea to give your lips extra attention during harsh winter months. Linda Baldi-Perry, president and licensed aesthetician at Spa Niagara recommends a product that looks as good as it feels. “My favorite lip product at Spa Niagara is Lip Benefits,” she says. “This cranberry-flavored lip balm not only provides immediate lip plumping but also protects delicate lip skin from harmful environmental toxins that can cause lip thinning, loss of color, and wrinkling. Daily use will increase lip fullness and smoothness.”
96 | Holiday Shopping Guide |2015
When you find your favorite holiday color, pick up an extra one for a stocking stuffer. It makes for a fun little luxury gift for any woman on your list.
Festive fingers Gel manicures are an incredible time saver from the moment you can grab your keys and go shortly after the last swipe of polish to the chip-free extra time between manicures. A professional gel manicure with a durable product will look great through all twelve days of Christmas. It’s also a great time to try an out-of-theordinary color. Studio M and Corto’s both carry the popular OPI lines, with an amazing range of creatively named colors. New shades include “Ro-Man-ce on the Moon,” a lustrous, rich red, or “A Great Opera-tunity,” a perfect go-witheverything neutral. At BeautyQuest, you’ll be treated to nail products from the Artisan Professionals line. The crimson-colored

Capello Salon
“Sexy” is, as the name suggests, a bold and beautiful signature red for the holidays or year-round. “Classic red, silver, or gold is always popular around holiday party time, and you can never go wrong with a French manicure,” says the staff at Capello. “If you want the classic French look, but with a little more impact, have your nail technician paint your tips red or gold, instead of the traditional white.” Rich jewel tones, brushed metallic, and luxe gold flakes are also popular holiday requests at Excuria. To keep nails looking their best, Gorczyca recommends wearing gloves while washing dishes or using cleaning products, and using cuticle oil daily.
Giving thanks Most in the industry agree that referrals are a great way to show appreciation for those who make you feel your best all year long. “We believe that if you loved your
98 | Holiday Shopping Guide |2015
products and/or services with us, referring a friend or loved one to us is the best gift we can receive,” says Baldi-Perry. Griffasi agrees, saying “The best way to thank your beauty professional at the holidays is with the referral of a new client for the start of a new year.” If you are looking to provide an extra token of gratitude, a gift card is an easy way to do it, especially when paired with a holiday card or personal note (which can also make the gift hand-off a little less awkward). Treats from a preferred coffee place can also help keep your stylist’s energy up through a long day on his or her feet. Also consider donating to your stylist’s favorite charity in his or her name. Take a little time for yourself this holiday season, and be sure to enjoy every merry moment. T

e reached out to some “Buffalebs” to find out what some of their most memorable holiday gifts have been, both given and received. Here’s what they had to say:
Janet Snyder Morning show host, Kiss 98.5; show host, Western New York Living, WGRZ-TV
The best gift I ever received, as terrible as this sounds, was a gorgeous pair of black Louis Vuittons. I would literally walk barefoot before wearing them in bad weather. You can never go wrong giving a girl a great pair of heels! And the best gift I ever gave, handsdown happened last year. On December 23 or 24, I took my family to Eden to pick up “Roxy,” an English bulldog puppy. It was the best Christmas ever—no one remembers any presents past Roxy that year. She is the cutest little girl and we are all so happy to have her.
Vincent O’Neill Co-founder of Irish Classical Theatre Company, actor, director, teacher
The best gift I ever received was from my daughter, Laura. I have a secret hobby of collecting miniature teddy bears, and have quite a collection from around the world. But my favorite one was given to me by Laura, who is an attorney in Washington DC now. She gave it to me for Christmas when she was about twelve. His name is “Angel Bear” and he sits on my pillow every day. The best gift I ever gave was the best and worst really. When I was around eight years old, I had no money and decided to make my father a set of miniature Christmas nativity figurines out of tin foil and pipe cleaners. Really basic, not very pretty and cost nothing to make. My brother teased me relentlessly for years over that

gift. Then, when my father passed away and we were going through his bureau where he kept his prized possessions, there they were. Apparently they were more meaningful to him than I had ever known.
Scott Levin News anchor, WGRZ-TV
The best gift I ever received was the birth of my youngest daughter, Sophia, in 2001 during a five-foot, lateDecember snowstorm. My wife Lisa and I went to the hospital Christmas night and later that morning Sophia arrived and completed our family of four. The best gift I ever gave would have to be Christmas family vacations, which create memories that last forever.
Ryan O’Reilly Forward, Buffalo Sabres
The best holiday gift I received was a paintball gun when I was a kid. I had wanted one for a while and a few of my friends had one. It was so important to me. The best holiday gift I had ever given was a telescope to my dad. 2015 | Holiday Shopping Guide | 101

several weeks later, my six siblings and I gathered at his townhouse to clean it out. We decided to split up many of his possessions among the seven of us, and we conducted a “draft lottery” to see who would pick first. I won the lottery, and immediately chose a 1972 oil painting of my father’s former business, Lockport Tire Company on Park Avenue in Lockport. It was painted by noted Lockport artist Joe Whalen. Having worked at the tire store during my teenage years the painting held special meaning to me. My older brother Matthew, now a Niagara County Court Judge, also worked at the tire shop. I was sure he would have been interested in the painting also. About six weeks later, on Christmas Eve, my family gathered for our annual gift exchange. I wrapped up the Lockport Tire painting and presented it to my brother Matt. I felt pretty good about giving that gift.
He loves the outdoors and always loved looking at the stars at night. He loved the gift.
Dan Bylsma Head coach, Buffalo Sabres
The best holiday gift I ever received was my first pair of Bauer skates when I was younger. I always had handme-down skates, so this was my first time having brand new ones. The best holiday gift I ever gave was a new fly rod and reel. It was actually a gift to myself! When we were younger, we use to pick a name out of a hat to buy for a sibling. As we got a little older we started to quietly “pick” ourselves and get the gifts we wanted.
John Murphy “Voice of the Bills”
The best holiday gift I ever received was also the best holiday gift that I ever gave. It happened back in 2001. My father passed away in October of that year, and,

Fast forward to the following Christmas, my brother Matt presented a gift to all of his six siblings wrapped up and tied with a bow. He had copies made of the painting and had them framed for each one of us. So now all of my brothers and sisters and I have the iconic painting hanging in our homes. Another copy hangs in the bar room of lifelong Murphy friend, Mike Ennis, at Danny Sheehan’s Steak House in Lockport. The best gift I ever gave for the holidays came back to me the next year as the best gift I ever received.
Kim Pegula Co-owner, Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres
The best holiday gift I ever received was a Barbie airplane. It was a gift for the first Christmas after I was adopted. To me, getting that Barbie meant I was really an American! The best holiday gift I ever gave was a car. We went to get the car early in the morning when everyone was asleep, drove it to the house in the snow so that it would be a surprise when they woke up. A lot of work, but worth the excitement! T
Down to earth: Books that celebrate gardening and nature By Elizabeth Licata
T
here are basically three types of gardening books— reference books, how-to books, and aspirational celebrations of beautiful gardens most of us can only dream about. Three recent releases belong to the latter two categories. First the how-to:
The Indestructible Houseplant; 200 Beautiful Plants that Everyone Can Grow By Tovah Martin with photographs by Kindra Clineff Timber Press, 2015
Meet the unkillables. Yes, they do exist, and the cover of this book illustrates several sturdy examples: Schlumbergera (Christmas cactus), Spathiphylum (Peace lily), Peperomia, and succulents. Martin’s gallery of indestructibles within the book goes on to praise such tried-and-trues as Saintpaulia (African violet), Philodendron, Dracaena, Ficus, and spider plant. There are also lesser-known cultivars like Asplenium nidus (bird’s nest ferns), Coprosma (mirror plant), and Medinilla (Malaysian grapes). So-called “black thumbs” should not turn their noses up at these selections. Even the humblest houseplant supports human health in important ways. Plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, producing a more oxygen-rich interior environment. They also increase humidity and help remove toxins from the air. Those are all excellent reasons to try again if you’ve given up on keeping plants inside your home, and Martin’s book is here to ensure success. She starts out by describing the less-than-ideal conditions in her own New England domicile, a drafty converted barn with low 2015 | Holiday Shopping Guide | 103
light. Nonetheless, Martin, a self-described plant addict, manages to keep this inhospitable space crammed with abundant green life, and one of the way she does it is by choosing only the resilient survivors and giving up on the weak. She also gives some great tips on how to pimp out boring plants with unusual containers (funnels, buckets, old coffee pots), repurposed stands, and interesting accessories (seashells, stones, and architectural salvage). This advice takes up the introductory portion of the book; most of the rest is devoted to a lengthy illustrated list of possible plants and, finally, the down-and-dirty on potting, light, humidity, fertilizing, and other care—as well as a few other tips on how to make houseplants shine as décor. It’s one of the best books on houseplants I’ve seen so far, and no wonder—Tovah Martin is one of our best garden writers.

The Art of Gardening: Design, Inspiration, and innovative planting techniques from Chanticleer By R. William Thomas with photographs by Rob Cardillo (with Eric Hsu, Dan Benarcik, Peter Brindle, Bryan Christ, Doug Croft, Fran DiMarco, Joe Henderson, Ed Hincken, Erin McKeon, Lisa Roper, Emma Seniuk, Anne Sims, Scott Steinfeldt, Przemyslam Walczak, and Jonathan Wright) | Timber Press, 2015
A team-produced book has been written by the gardeners who care for this unique public garden in Wayne, Pennsylvania, which evolved from a private estate with beautiful, but (more-or-less) traditional landscaping to one of the most talked-about and visited botanical sites in the US. Chanticleer is devoted to innovation in garden design; as Thomas states in his introduction, it is “run by gardeners, designed by gardeners, and exists for gardeners.” There are no
holiday lights, weddings, or garden trains. Chanticleer consists of fifteen distinct areas, where its gardeners have tended lush perennial plantings, bulbs, mature trees, espaliers, water features, and a few lawns; they’ve also added intriguing sculptures, arbors with thronelike tall wooden chairs, stone couches, and Asian-themed enclosures. The family tennis court is now the Tennis Court Garden, with perennials and bulbs where the clay courts used to be. The terraces of the house (now a museum) are redesigned entirely twice a year. In other words, these public gardens evolve much like our private gardens do; when it’s time for change, change happens. That’s what makes Chanticleer a delight for gardeners and garden lovers to visit again and again. The book first describes Chanticleer’s design and then its plants—at least that’s what the sections claim. In fact, discussion of plants and design is intertwined throughout, as it should be; it’s impossible for one to evolve without the participation of the other (even inadvertently). Though most home gardeners can only look at Rob Cardillo’s beautiful photographs and shake their heads admiringly and longingly, any gardener can learn from such essays as “Dry Shade,” and “Three Views on Color.” If nothing else, it’s impossible to even skim the book without planning a visit. Paradise Gardens By Toby Musgrave | Frances Lincoln, 2015
Both natural and manmade landscapes are included in this ambitious survey of how the natural world is connected with belief system, and how these belief systems inspire interpretations and reconfigurations of nature—such as Verona’s Giusti Palace gardens, Bali’s Pura Taman Ayun, Sweden’s Woodland Cemetery, and the terraces that surround Haifa’s Shrine of the Bab. The book covers prehistory (depictions of nature found in Lacsaux) through 2014 (a river of ceramic poppies in London). There are beautiful spreads on
such world-famous sites as New York’s Cloisters, Agra’s Taj Mahal, amd Spain’s Alhambra, with the symbolism of the design elements explained and changes (often unfortunate) to original designs documented. The book is lushly illustrated throughout—it’s also on the large side—which tempts one to treat it as coffee table decoration, but that would be a mistake. Prop it up against something and read. You’ll learn about the Pure Land gardens of Japan, the scholar gardens of China, the four quadrants of the Islamic garden form, and the sacred groves of the Druids, just to name a few styles. Frances Lincoln can be reliably depended upon to provide nature- and garden-related titles that reach beyond the soil and get to the histories and personalities that invigorate planted spaces. This book is no exception. T 2015 | Holiday Shopping Guide | 105
Malls feature small businesses as well as corporate giants By Marianne Potratz
W
ith the year’s biggest shopping season upon us, we are reminded how WNY’s small business scene has grown and improved. A great mix of retail, dining, and service-based business line in-demand neighborhoods throughout the area, and lift Buffalo and surrounding areas back to life. Supporting small business in walkable shopping districts is important for their future success and growth.
(Left) Poster Art, Boulevard Mall (Top) Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls USA
Given the momentum around supporting locally owned companies, it can be easy to forget that malls house locally owned retailers, too. In addition to shopping Small Business Saturday and enjoying community holiday walks, you can support neighborhood business owners alongside brand name stores at some of our area’s largest retail hubs. WNY’s shopping malls have seen big changes recently. Expansions and new tenants continually add to an eclectic array of businesses. Perhaps you need a

computer, special occasion shoes, and a wedding registry gift—all in one afternoon. Or maybe you’re looking to redeem some rewards cash, and price out a new dishwasher. A mall is the spot to take care of it all.
WNY’s solo location Each area mall has stores that you will find nowhere else. Galleria has sixty-eight unique tenants, and will reach seventy by year-end with the opening of Billy Beez children’s play area, and Windsor women’s apparel. Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls USA—among the largest of its kind in the US—is the only shopping center in the Buffalo Niagara region that offers outlet stores (200-plus designer brands), so in that regard, every store is oneof-a-kind. Tenants unique to the market include Zwilling J.A. Henckels (opening this November), Disney Outlet, Barbour, Le Creuset, and Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th. If someone expecting a new addition has a Buybuy registry, head to Boulevard Mall, which boasts the only area location. You’ll find Pure Integrity’s intensely

fragranced, clean-burning soy candles at Eastern Hills Mall, where you can also get in some batting practice at Sports Performance Park. Make a shopping daytrip to Rochester’s Eastview Mall if you’re looking for the LEGO store, Madewell or Von Maur; the area’s only Athleta, TUMI, and Garage are also located here.
Small business in the mix A great mix of locally owned businesses can be found alongside these nationally recognized tenants. Eastern Hills reports that approximately forty percent of its tenants are local owners. In addition to specialty retailers including Brrr-ffalo Apparel, BFLO Gallery & Gift Shop, and Made In America, the food court is home to five locally owned restaurants. Eastern Hills also houses a Department of Motor Vehicles branch, SPCA, UNYTS, and local TV station WBBZ-TV, home of Me TV. Independent businesses in the Boulevard Mall include Laux Sporting Goods, Poster Art, Sweet Melody’s (gelato), and TT New York Dress Shop.
Whether you have a glam photo shoot at Bou Dior or design hoodies and sweatpants at Customized Teez, you’ll be supporting one of Walden Galleria’s eleven hometown stores (some kiosks are also local ventures). At McKinley Mall, Parkside Candy serves up its legendary sweets alongside Spears & Co. Fine Jewelry—both are local. Fashion Outlets counts DAvolio’s, Sports Collectors Corner, Pop Culture, and Glow as tenants alongside their international retailers.
Wherever your gift list takes you this holiday season, wear comfortable shoes, and enjoy all the area has to offer while doing your part to keep local business growing. Shop thoughtfully, give generously, and start saving for next year. T
Together, these companies make significant contributions to their local economies. Clarence’s largest taxpayer is the Eastern Hills Mall, and Fashion Outlets has the same designation in Niagara Falls, where it accounts for more than fifty percent of sales tax revenue collected by the Town of Niagara. The Outlets are a driving force behind major changes to the local business landscape.
A partner in philanthropy Giving back to the communities they call home is important to all businesses, and countless organizations benefit from partnership with Walden Galleria. Walden Galleria works with hundreds of community non-profits, such as Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Make-A-Wish WNY, Boys and Girls Club of Buffalo, ERIE BOCES, and Hope before Heaven, supporting through donations, fundraising space, or sponsorship. Boulevard Mall was recently awarded the 2014 Outstanding Philanthropic Small Business Award. They are proud supporters of Hospice Buffalo, Alzheimer’s Association of Western New York, Buffalo City Mission, American Heart Association, Aids Community Services, Amherst Youth Foundation and many other great organizations. More than forty major fundraising and awareness events are held each year at Eastern Hills Mall. Events like prescription drug drop offs, free electronic recycling, and child safety seat checks help keep the community safe, while their Holiday Pet Expo spreads some merriment and benefits local animal rescue and non-profit organizations.

GIFT-GIVING
THE ZOERB
AS AN EVENT,
W
e all know that it’s what’s on the inside—of a gift box— that counts, but a pretty presentation is a special touch that heightens the excitement, anticipation, and festive feelings associated with gift giving. Everything Elmwood, 740 Elmwood Avenue, has an assortment of beautiful handmade gifts, but what gives the shop the edge is its gift wrap services. Owner Kelly LaMartina and her crew have been gift wrapping for Buffalo natives and visitors since 1983. “Everything Elmwood is known for its signature complimentary gift wrapping. We believe every gift purchased at our store should be presented in an eye-catching creative way,” LaMartina says. “A gift should be as fun to give as it is to get. We accomplish this by utilizing bright tissues,
A REFLECTION OF ONE’S AFFECTION AND APPRECIATION FOR THE RECIPIENT.
printed papers, satin ribbons, cello wraps, and assorted creative seasonal findings and box shapes. We employ many student artists, so teaching them our signature wrap and watching them create is truly part of the Everything Elmwood shopping experience, as it is done swiftly right before your eyes. Nothing is too small or too big for us. If we sell it, we will wrap it!” LaMartina’s customers often tell her things like “They aren’t going to want to open that!” And

sometimes the gift recipients really do wait, taking the time to enjoy the beautiful presentation for a few days before revealing the treasure inside. Tony Walker & Co., at 5110 Main Street in Williamsville, is “your fashion activity center.” More than a store, Tony Walker & Co. hosts education seminars, fashion shows, workout classes, and more. The store carries dozens of top-name brands, and when your family members see the iconic houndstooth wrap, they will know they’re in for a treat. “Everything is better wrapped in houndstooth!” reads the Tony Walker & Co. website. “Make sure to wrap everything in our houndstooth wrapping paper. It’s complimentary and available in different colors with any color ribbon you could want. There are five different gift wrapping stations in Body+Beauty, TW&Co, Women’s, The Nantucket Shop, and our Houndstooth Headquarters (located next to Jewelry).”
NEO Gift Studio, at 512 Elmwood Avenue, has been noted for its exceptional gift wrap for more than thirty years. “Our philosophy at NEO has always been that gift presentation should be a gift in and of itself,” says Joan Zoerb, who owns the store with sister Joyce. “It’s not who you are, it’s not what you give, it’s how you gift it.” The Zoerb sisters see gift-giving as an event, a reflection of one’s affection and appreciation for the recipient. At NEO, they take great pride in choosing details like ribbons, florals, adornments, and paper styles. They even have a way to make gift cards look special. “In the past three years, [we at] NEO have recognized the growing trend of gifting with gift cards. Although it’s a billion-dollar business, many people today hesitate to gift with gift cards because [it can seem like] a non-eventful gifting experience. We think otherwise. We have designed a collection of gift card presentation boxes that give new life to gifting with gift cards.” 2015 | Holiday Shopping Guide | 111
says owner Katharine Jemison. “Everything is customized for the particular gifts selected by our customers. Depending what it is and where it’s going, a package may be wrapped simply in an elegant tissue, cellophane, and ribbon creation, or traditional box and extravagant bow. We always make sure each item is packaged sufficiently for whatever type of travel it will be doing.” Jemison’s father was a chef, and taught her the importance of presentation. “It’s the first impression your gift gives to the recipient,” she maintains. “It speaks volumes to the thoughtfulness of the entire giving process. A gift just thrown in a gift bag, though convenient, can appear so rushed. Our gift wrapping will represent the care you spent in selecting the perfect gift, but you won’t wait around all day, because we are very fast.”
Spoiled Rotten
Karen Roth, owner of Destination Massage, 9500 Main St, Clarence, believes presentation is everything, and makes sure her gift certificates look just as good as her freshly buffed and polished clients. “Our gift certificates were specifically designed, not just purchased at an office supplies store,” Roth says. “We fill out everything on the certificate except the To and From, so the person receiving the gift will feel more connected to the giver.” The gift certificates are then placed in a special box with wrapping paper; Roth even drops in a couple of chocolates! The client doesn’t have to do a thing more. “The gift certificate will be beautifully wrapped with lots of thought involved and no work for the client, since he or she has already made the effort to choose the gift and pick it up,” Roth finishes. The crew at Spoiled Rotten at 831 Elmwood Avenue does a lot of shipping, and they make sure their gifts arrive looking just as pretty as they did when they were sent. “We offer several styles of gift wrap at Spoiled Rotten,”

Jenss Décor, with locations on Maple Road in Amherst and Milestrip Road in Orchard Park, also offers free gift wrap services for its customers. “Since we have gifts for all occasions, we offer a choice of papers that fit the theme. The presentation is exciting to the recipient; the mystery of what might be inside the beautiful package adds to the thrill of giving and receiving a present,” says Marsha Dautch, vice president. Dautch agrees with other gift wrap experts that personalized presentation symbolizes the care that goes into selecting something just right. “A gift is special when the giver takes the time to look around the store and choose a gift that would mean the most to the recipient,” she points out. “Sometimes it just ‘hits them’ and they know it is the perfect thing. It will leave our store beautifully wrapped and [perfectly presented].” You heard it from the pros: select the perfect gift, and let them wrap it up so when that nice (or naughty) person in your life sees the pretty box, he or she will feel a shiver of anticipation and think, “This is just for me.” T
Give WNY: Local authors and local topics By Elizabeth Licata
E
very year, dozens of locally themed books are published, and most of them are sent to our offices. Holiday gift round-ups are a rare chance to recognize a few of these wildly diverse offerings—and they do make unique gifts.
Buffalo Noir Edited by Ed Park and Brigid Highes | Akashic Books, 2015
This is billed as a collection of “stories from the dark side of New York’s second largest city.” In addition to locally based authors, it contains stories by writers—some of them rather well-known—who have WNY links but now live elsewhere. Here’s the list, an impressive one: Dimitri Anastasopoulos, Lawrence Block, Kim Chinquee, Broke Costello, Tom Fontana, Christina Milletti, Joyce Carol Oats, Ed Park, Connie Porter, Lissa Marie Redmond, Gary Earl Ross, S.J. Rozan, and John Wray. Last but not least, the cover features a photograph by longtime Spree writer and Buffalo chef Joseph George. What holds all these far-flung contributors together is the subject matter—local, familiar, and intriguing. Who wouldn’t want to read a story titled “The Bubble Man of Allentown,” or “Chicken Noodle’s Night Out,” set in the Anchor Bar? The Noir anthology series was started in 2004 with Brooklyn Noir, and has covered over fifty cities worldwide. Expect any story in a Noir anthology to have its fair share of gloom, mystery, and, often, murder. Given this mission, editor Ed Park is lucky to have the queen of literary goth, Joyce Carol Oates, on tap, with her creepy, blizzard-fueled student/teacher encounter. Other disturbing scenarios include a mother and son taking ill-advised shelter in the abandoned Aud, assault 2015 | Holiday Shopping Guide | 113
and retribution in a South Buffalo neighborhood, and multiple murders and mutilations throughout the city. A lot of the stories are set in winter, but, thankfully, not all. If you have a horror story buff on your list, this is for them. And for a duet of holiday fear, pair it with this title:
Cursed in New York: Stories of the Damned in the Empire State By Randi Minetor | Globe Pequot, 2015
A Rochester-based nature author who has written five books about hiking and birding in Western New York as well as many others exploring the beauties of America’s national parks has switched gears for this title, which surveys haunted/cursed sites throughout New York State. It is forthright and fact-based, laying out the history, the happenings, and the reasons people believe these curses exist. Minetor sees no reason to oversell the spookiness of it all, which makes it a fun and interesting read. The downstate, northern, and Central New York stories are equally as fascinating as the Western New York entries, but local history buffs will enjoy “Devil’s Hole: The Cave of the Evil Spirit,” “The Death of a President and the Teams that Fail to Thrive,” and others.
Favorite Recipes of the Birthday Girls
A collection of recipes from Jackie Culliton, Shelley Drake, Marsha Henderson, Pat Pitts, and Eileen Snyder | Morris Press Cookbooks, 2014
Over forty years, five Buffalo women started their careers, fought glass ceilings, raised their kids, went on vacations, endured life’s blows and rejoiced in its rewards. They also celebrated their birthdays with lunches, dinners, and, eventually, special trips. This recipe collection represents
First Ward Trilogy (Mark Twain, Fingy Connors, & The Sullivan Brothers, Fingy Connors & The New Century, Murderers, Scoundrels and Ragamuffins) by Richard Sullivan | Montgomery Ewing, 2011-2015
Book three of this series just came out, but these must be given as a trio to really be effective. The First Ward Trilogy is for those who love to geek out on Buffalo’s Irish history and the murky legacy of the industrial waterfront. Everything is here: the Fenian invasion, Mark Twain, the scoopers strike of 1899, the saloons, the parades, the fires, and—always—the fights. Technically novels, these manage to be detailed histories at the same time, seen through the eyes of ruthless tycoon Fingy Connors, alderman John P. Sullivan, and detective James E. Sullivan, the three main characters, who interact with other major players of the period. These are both entertaining as novels and quite useful as reference volumes.

meals they made together and apart, and is meant to commemorate their long friendship. The dishes are alternately personal (Nani Lu’s Sausage Stuffing for Turkey), ethnic (Bigos), vintage American (5-cup salad), and sophisticated (Prociutto Rolls with Arugula and Figs). Some include personal footnotes. All proceeds benefit Western New York Women’s Foundation, which provides opportunities for women and girls, so this is perfect for girlfriend giftees.
Legends of the Buffalo Bills: Marv Levy, Bruce Smith, Thurman Thomas, and other Bills Stars By Randy Schultz | Sports Publishing, 2003, 2015
Updated through the 2014 season, this compendium of Bills lore is perfect for sports fans who want to read about such blasts from the past as Ron McDole and George Saimes, who played in the early AFL years, as well as more recent stars like Thurman Thomas, Bruce Smith, and Jim Kelly. It’s interesting to glimpse the older players’ views on the contemporary game—nobody’s mincing words here, and that’s what makes the book relevant. Many of the former players and coaches have comments about the contemporary Bills team, as well
as pithy critiques of their colleagues from the past—i.e., Paul Maguire’s “To me John Rauch was an absolute idiot,” and Tony Green’s lack of sentimentality about the old War Memorial Stadium: “I just couldn’t believe that they would allow something like this to take place in the National Football League. I couldn’t believe that this was a pro stadium.” For this edition, Schultz has updated his previous bios (many of the updates are sad notices of recent deaths) and added bios of notable additions since 2004, including, of course, the Pegulas. 2015 | Holiday Shopping Guide | 115
Nadine, My Funny and Trusty Guide Dog By Carol Chiodo Fleischman and illustrated by Stephanie Ford
Nadine, My Funny and Trusty Guide Dog, is a delightful story about a young sight-impaired girl whose guide dog may have a habit of getting into her dirty laundry but also saves her from getting run over during a snow storm that has dulled her sense of hearing. Theirs is a relatively brief adventure, but it contains a lot of easily understood information about the role of guide dogs and the relationships their owners have with them. Carol Chiodo Fleischman writes with a down-to-earth, engaging voice; the book, intended for K-3, is a great way for children to learn about the challenges faced by those with failing sight.T
