Give an experience, make memories By Matthew Biddle

any people say they don’t need more stuff—more knick-knacks collecting dust, more clothes in their closet, more items cluttering up their kitchen. And yet, during the holidays, more stuff is exactly what we receive. This year, try giving your loved ones memories—unique local experiences they can treasure for months and years
to come. Don’t take my word for it: A growing body of research shows that receiving an experience creates more, longer-lasting happiness than receiving a new outfit or gadget. Here are several ideas to get you started: Holiday Shopping Guide | 2017

Buffalo tours Help your family and friends gain a newfound appreciation for the history, unmatched architecture, and stories found throughout our city. Preservation Buffalo Niagara offers guided tours of downtown Buffalo and the stunning Guaranty Building (preservationbuffaloniagara.org). Explore Buffalo has an extensive catalog of walking, bus, bike, and kayak tours highlighting the city’s diverse neighborhoods, history, and architecture. Consider gifting an Explorer Pass, which allows an individual or family to attend an unlimited number of basic tours and receive discounts off special tours (explorebuffalo.org). During warmer months, the Spirit of Buffalo offers craft brew and wine cruises for adults, and pirate cruises for parents, grandparents, and their little ones, each allowing guests to see Buffalo from a unique vantage point on the water (spiritofbuffalo.com).
Get crafty Gather your crew for a DIY workshop this holiday season. The Western New York Book Arts Center offers classes on screen-printing and letterpress for novices and experienced artists alike (wnybookarts.org). StudioHue hosts parties around the area, during which participants

make string art, key holders, door hangers, serving trays, and more; you can also host a private party for at least a dozen people, including kids (studiohueevents.com). Makers Workshop on Hertel Avenue hosts jewelrymaking classes and private parties at its location and others around Buffalo (makersbuffalo.com).
Family fun Give a gift that keeps giving all year long with a membership to our local attractions and cultural organizations. With a family membership, two adults and their children can enjoy unlimited admission for a year to the Buffalo Zoo ($105, buffalozoo.org), Buffalo Science Museum ($70, sciencebuff.org), Buffalo History Museum ($60, buffalohistory.org), Albright-Knox Art Gallery ($75, albrightknox.org), Aquarium of Niagara ($75, aquariumofniagara.org), and Explore & More Children’s Museum ($60, exploreandmore.org). Grandparent and individual memberships are also available at each location. Families with children may also enjoy excursions to see hundreds of butterflies at the Butterfly ConservaHoliday Shopping Guide | 2017

tory in Niagara Falls, Ontario (niagaraparks.com), ride a historic carrousel at North Tonawanda’s Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum (carrouselmuseum.org), zip line at Holiday Valley’s Sky High Adventure Park (holidayvalley.com), or ride the water bikes or ice bikes at Canalside (waterbikesofbuffalo.com). Gift certificates for Rolly Pollies, a gym for kids aged four months to twelve years (rpwny.com), or SkyZone, a trampoline park for all ages (skyzone.com/buffalo), make excellent presents too.

For sports lovers, there are, of course, upcoming games for the Buffalo Bills, Sabres, and Bandits, but also consider a few of our less-heralded teams. The Buffalo Beauts women’s professional hockey team won the league championship last year and takes the ice for home games at HarborCenter (nwhl.zone). In January, the Queen City Roller Girls roller derby league kicks off the 2018 season at RiverWorks (qcrg.net).

Culinary delights Whether you’re shopping for a home chef, an experienced baker, or an expert at ordering takeout, a cooking or baking class can be a fun way to spend an afternoon and gain a few skills. The Auburn Watson Culinary Arts Center, located in Cheektowaga, offers classes on everything from pasta to Asian fusion, often inviting top local chefs to share their passion and dishes with participants (culinaryartscenter.org). Through its Healthy Options program, the Independent Health Foundation partners with local restaurants and shops—including Sun Cuisines and D’Avolio—to offer healthy cooking classes (healthyoptionsbuffalo. com). For the bakers in your family, take them to a cupcake or cake decorating class offered by Chrusciki Bakery in Lancaster (chruscikibakery. com), or a holiday-themed cake pop class by Buffalo Cake Pops (buffalocakepops.com). With Cookie Buffalo, you can even bring the fun home with private cupcake- and cookie-decorating parties for eight to twelve people (cookiebuffalo.com). Gift certificates are available for the popular Lewiston Culinary Tours, three-hour walking tours that combine multiple restaurant tastings with fascinating information about the charming village’s rich history. Located inside Kodak founder George Eastman’s mansion, the George Eastman Museum highlights the fascinating history of photography (eastman.org), while a short walk away, the Memorial Art Gallery is known for an extensive collection of works from Monet, Matisse, Cezanne, and others (mag.rochester.edu). Finally, during the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in New York State, there’s no better time to visit the National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House, where the civil rights leader lived and the National American Woman Suffrage Association maintained its headquarters for a time (susanbanthonyhouse.org). Shop everything Buffalo at BFLO Gallery & Gift Shop, with stores conveniently located in malls throughout WNY. In addition to a wide range of Buffalo apparel, BFLO Gallery & Gift Shop also features home and office decor, jewelry, gifts, and more, with many custom items exclusive to the B FLO brand.
Buffalo Mart has been creating T-shirts celebrating Buffalo for various clients for three decades: one of its clients is Visit Buffalo Niagara (featured on this list), who carries its designs at locations on Washington Street and at Buffalo Niagara International Airport. The owners maintain a storefront on Hertel Avenue that is only open from 11a.m.5p.m. on Saturdays. All of their available designs are sold online with prices beginning at $15. The bold designs include graphic representations of the Buffalo skyline at night and peak daylight, outlined bisons filled with various iconic symbols, and a shirt that proclaims that Buffalo is “Where Football & Wings are King.

BuffaLove Apparel 903-2866 or buffaloveapparel.com Made famous by their Human BuffaLove aerial photos featuring hundreds of WNYers meticulously grouped in the formation of a Buffalo-themed image, BuffaLove apparel can be found at Wegmans and Bon-Ton locations throughout the area.
New Buffalo Graphics 1417 Hertel Avenue, Buffalo; 885-5188 or cafepress.com/newbuffalo Michael Morgulis, proprietor of New Buffalo Graphics, founded in 1977, is the granddaddy of Buffalo T-shirt purveyors. Morgulis’s shirts—usually starring a lone, silhouetted bison—celebrate Buffalo chic and are oftentimes tongue-in-cheek: the “City of No Illusions” shirt (his first) remains a best seller. Other designs celebrate snow-related fun, the city’s jazz scene, and imagined attractions. The store sells shirts in all sizes, including onesies for infants.
Pasteurized Tees 795 Elmwood Avenue, Buffalo; 885-8337 or pasteurizedtees.com Pastuerized Tees, owned/ directed by Michael Bowen, burst upon the Buffalo T-shirt landscape in 2011 with handdrawn designs that are clever and (often) hilarious. According to Bowen, there are 125 Pasteurized Tees designs and the shop’s top-selling shirts are Origami Buffalo and Skyline Buffalo, which was designed by Bowen’s son Sebastian when he was eleven. The Elmwood Village store sells ready-made shirts, neatly displayed overhead and in bins. Additionally, Pasteurized Tees prints cus-

tom shirts; customers can either select a store-made design and shirt or walk in with their own design. The store doesn’t charge a special fee for this and DIY designs can be worn same-day. All shirts are packaged in neat white milk cartons.
Poster Art 1055 Elmwood Avenue, Buffalo; 883-3034 or posterartusa.com Another prime Elmwood Village outpost for shirts, Poster Art, owned by longtime businessman Mark Corsi, has the city’s largest selection of Buffalo-centric T-shirts. Shirts are generally priced at $22; some long-sleeves styles are slightly more. This is where to purchase the ever-popular My City Smells Like Cheerios, Aud Nation, and Scared Straight by Father Baker shirts. There are plenty of onesies, sporty shirts, and girl-cut shirts to choose from.
Reeds Jenss (three locations)

In addition to the officially licensed Buffalo Sabres shirts, there are a few Buffalo-related designs, including Celebrate One Buffalo and 716 Buffalo, for $28 and up.
Spoiled Rotten 831 Elmwood Avenue, Buffalo; 884-3883 or spoiledrottenbuffalo.com Established in 2001, Spoiled Rotten is where to find bold bison-centric items, including the audacious Buffalo Food Pyramid, T-shirt featuring loganberry, pizza, wings, and beef on weck. Shirts are priced at $22.50. In addition to regular and girl-cut shirts, Spoiled Rotten carries onesies printed with colorful bisons and butter lambs.
Thin Ice 719 Elmwood Avenue, Buffalo; 881-4321 or thiniceonline.com Proprietor Therese Deutschlander packs her Elmwood Village shop with unique gifts, jewelry, and clothing, including Buffalo-wear selections. History of Buffalo Music & Entertainment: A Nostalgic Journey into Buffalo New York’s Musical Heritage from the 1830s to the Early 1980s By Rick Falkowski Rick Falkowski, 2017
Photos courtesy of Rick Falkowski
This 430-page book is a comprehensive 150-year chronology of the Buffalo and Western New York music scene, as well as a love letter from Falkowski, music aficionado, educator, and founder of the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame. He covers Canal Street to The Pan-Am Exposition, area theaters, Crystal Beach concerts and other amusement parks, nightclubs (Dellwood Ballroom, Town Casino, Chez Ami, Colored Musicians Club), big band, jazz and classical music with the birth of the BPO, R&B and blues, country music, and of course, Buffalo’s
beloved German, Irish, and Polish music. Falkowski forays into early radio and television, 1950s rock ‘n’ roll and folk music, 1960s Buffalo Sound bands, and even music stores and manufacturers. The timeline ends in the early eighties as attendance at music venues declined with the legal drinking age increasing to nineteen in 1982 and dipped even more when it was finally raised to twentyone in 1985. Music fans and Buffalovers of every stripe will find something fascinating in this tome. $25 at buffalomusichistory.com Holiday Shopping Guide | 2017

Nickel City Blues: A Gideon Rimes Mystery By Gary Earl Ross Black Opal Books, 2017 Ross, an Edgar Award winner, has penned an intriguing new book starring Rimes, PI, a black Iraq war veteran and retired army CID detective. Rimes is tasked with protecting a beautiful blues singer from her well-connected ex-boyfriend. When the boyfriend ends up dead, Rimes becomes the main suspect. The author is a lifelong resident of Buffalo and retired UB professor and playwright. He knows Nickel City inside and out, and this mystery/thriller is an enjoyable romp through its dark underbelly.
Backroads & Byways of Upstate New York: Drives, Day Trips, & Weekend Excursions By Christine A. Smyczynksi The Countryman Press, 2017 “Upstate may be a little misleading. Smyczynski, a frequent contributor to Buffalo Spree and Forever Young, hits the trail and uncovers New York State treasures from Lake Ontario to the Hudson Valley and beyond. The book is organized loosely from the westernmost part of the state to the east, starting on Route 104 in Niagara and Orleans Counties (wine trails, cobblestone architecture) and ending with the Shawangunk Mountain Scenic Byway (New Paltz, farmers markets) with Finger Lakes, the Adirondacks, and more between. Each of the nineteen geographic routes included in the book are thoroughly researched with tons of great photos and information about area amenities, historic sites, and claims to fame.

You Gotta Know Buffalo Trivia Game My Hometown Edition AppSetGo, 2017 appsetgogames.com Think you know Buffalo sports? It’s much more than wide right, my friend. This trivia game, billed as “The Ultimate Trivia Game for the Buffalo Sports Fan” will test your knowledge, and maybe your will to live. (This is Buffalo sports, after all.) With 500 questions, there’s plenty to discover about this city besides its sports obsessions. (For example: On August 2, 2013, what Canadian Rock band returned to the Outer Harbor for a full concert after being cut short by rain two weeks earlier? Answer: The Tragically Hip). Suggested game play is to place all 125 trivia cards (with four questions each) in a stack. The player picks a letter A, B, C, or D and another player reads the corresponding question off the top card. The goal is to get twenty-one points exactly. I’m guessing this could parlay into a drinking game, too. If you’re alone with no one to play with, simply read ‘em and weep.

St. Patrick’s Cemetery - Volume II By Shelley Richards
Our Fallen Warriors Remembered By Matthew E. Parsons Matthew E. Parsons, 2015 Parsons, South Park High School Class of 1970, has compiled a comprehensive salute to SPHS students who have died while in service in the United States military from WWI to the war in Iraq. South Buffalo has always been a tightly knit community, and this book is sure to be meaningful to residents past and present, as well as anyone interested in the military and genealogy. There are photos of many of the fallen soldiers, as well as pictures of their final resting places. Information includes their South Buffalo street address, graduation year, medals earned, branch, unit, news stories, and family left behind. It’s a thorough, if chilling, resource for researchers and loved ones.
Volume II features 160 new biographies of people buried at St. Patrick’s Cemetery at 23 Glenwood Avenue in Lockport, New York. Chapters include a cemetery history update, including the earliest known burials, a list of names of Eastern European burials, cemetery caretaker maps and burials, local monument craftsmen from 1800s to 1900s, monument symbolism, and a complete lot owner listing. Richards, who has many relatives buried in the cemetery, says the biographies are not just of “famous” folks, but stories about anyone and everyone. It’s a valuable resource to genealogists and biographers in Western New York, particularly those of Irish descent. As with the first volume, all proceeds will be donated to the upkeep of the cemetery. The book is available online at niagaraarttrail.com or in Lockport at All Saints Parish, 76 Church Street; Ticklebridge at 12 Market Street (in the Bewely Building), and at the Niagara County Historical Society Store, 215 Niagara Street. Spirits & Cocktails of Upstate New York: A History
Photos courtesy of American Palate
By Don Cazentre 2017, Arcadia Publishing The origin of the cocktail is hotly debated. On May 13, 1806, a newspaper editor in Hudson, New York, wrote that a “cock tail…is stimulating liquor, composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water, and bitters.” Whereas along the Niagara River, Lewiston folk contend that local barkeep Kitty Hustler placed a rooster’s feather in a drink and coined the phrase “cocktail.” Whatever the provenance, Upstate New York has a long and grand history of spirits and cocktails. Early colonists distilled rum, and pioneering settlers made whiskey. The area is home to its share of spirited times and liquid legends, and the recent surge in modern distilleries and cocktail bars only bolsters that tradition. Syracuse writer Don Cazentre is the craft beer, wine, and spirits writer for NYup.com and serves up these tales of Upstate New York along with more than fifty historic and modern cocktail recipes.

3-Ingredient Cocktails By Robert Simonson Ten Speed Press, 2017 Here’s an entertaining and educational collection of the greatest drinks of all time, modern and classic, all of which conveniently feature only three ingredients. Brooklyn-based Robert Simonson has written about cocktails, spirits, and all things bars for the New York Times since 2000 and authored A Proper Drink and The Old-Fashioned. His latest book is both a concise history of the best classic cocktails (Tom and Jerry, anyone?) and a curated collection of the best three-ingredient cocktails of the modern era. Organized by style of drink and variations, the book features seventy-five delicious recipes for cocktails both classic (Japanese Cocktail, Bee’s Knees, Harvey Wallbanger) and contemporary (Remember the Alimony, Little Italy, La Perla), in addition to fun narrative asides and beautiful full-color photography.

Day Drinking: 50 Cocktails for a Mellow Buzz
Opposite bottom: Photo courtesy of American Palate; Right: Photo courtesy Workman Publishing Co., Inc.
By Kat Odell Workman Publishing, 2017 So, day drinking means imbibing low-alcohol beverages before 6 p.m., not simply getting hammered of an afternoon. We knew that. Anyway, Odell, contributing editor at eater.com and founding editor of the site’s popular “Drinks” column, has come up with a smashing list of lowalcohol day drinks, for when the occasion calls for a drink, but not getting drunk, which is totally a thing, apparently. Odell has created low ABV drinks for every occasion, be it a perfect julep or Pimm’s Cup on a hot day poolside, sparkly aperitifs for pre-prandial enjoyment, or spiked hot drinks and toddies to stave off the winter chill after (or while) skating, sledding, caroling, etc. Helpful tools, equipment, and ingredient supply lists and how-to basics begin the book. This is an attractive and useful guide, envy-inducing photos of the author and her bare midriff enjoying delicious drinks with her attractive friends in gorgeous locales notwithstanding. Wendy Guild Swearingen is Senior Editor of Spree.

Irish Coffee From Lori Teibel Ingredients: Irish Coffee glass (5-6 oz.) One large shot of strong coffee One large shot of Jameson Irish Whiskey (approx 2 fingers) 2 Tb dark brown sugar Fresh grated Nutmeg 1/2 pint whipped heavy cream (made from no less than 36% milk fat content) 1Tbs confectionary sugar 1/4 tsp Vanilla Directions: Whip cream with 1Tbs of confectionary sugar and 1/4 tsp of vanilla. Keep whipped cream cold until time to assemble the coffee. Mix whiskey and brown sugar together into small microwaveable container you can easily pour from (such as a glass measuring cup). Heat in the microwave until just bubbling (30 seconds). Remove whisky mixture carefully and pour into Irish Coffee glass. Add large shot of strong coffee. Now would be the time to carefully light a match and flame the whiskey for a dramatic moment, if you so desire. It will burn off some of the alcohol as well. Over the back of a spoon, dollop the whipped cream gently onto the coffee. This will help keep it from sinking to the bottom. Dust the top with fresh grated nutmeg and serve.

Exploring Canadian cuisine By Christa Glennie Seychew
T
he mention of Canadian cuisine may conjure an image of heaping piles of flapjacks stacked in pools of warm maple syrup, or beefy, gravy covered fries that, with assistance from a hefty dose of squeaky cheese curds, make up the nation’s favorite comfort food, poutine. Neither of those admittedly swoon-worthy reflections would be incorrect, but they fall as short of adequately summarizing the culinary story of our neighbors to the north as any visitor’s initial presumption that the American diet is made entirely of hamburgers and pizza. Despite the fact that only five percent of Canada’s footprint is deemed arable, its pantry is vast and varied. Whether looking to the coasts and the Maritimes where seafood and shellfish abound, to Alberta for its fantastic beef, or Quebec for its French-influenced fare, Canadian cuisine is no less exciting or diverse than our own. Additionally, its native people’s rich foraging and preserving traditions, along with the influences of its first waves of immigrants, have created a delicious edible history not entirely dissimilar to ours, and arguably, appreciated more broadly by its citizens. Here, at the close of Canada’s celebration of its 150th anniversary, we’ll take this opportunity to more closely examine the nation’s culinary legacy through the eyes of cooks and writers.

Friends Lindsay Anderson and Dana VanVeller spent five months in a car exploring their country. All ten provinces, a couple of islands, and almost 23,000 miles later and the two ended up with a blog anointed “Best Culinary Travel Blog” by the food gods at Saveur, as well as a cookbook entitled Feast: Recipes and Stories from a Canadian Road Trip. With

contributions from farmers, First Nation elders, top chefs, and others, Feast is a wild and varied exploration of Canadian cuisine, a concise and beautifully photographed hodgepodge of recipes encapsulating the old and new, the contemporary and everyday, the time-tested and the unconventional. Divided into regions, Feast offers plenty of recipes for anyone with strong preferences: meat eaters, hardcore brunchers, seafood enthusiasts, veg-heads, and others will appreciate the breadth of its offerings. Since much of the country’s cuisine is influenced by its native ingredients, Feast contains a suggested list of substitutes for those who may struggle to source items such as partridgeberries or birch syrup (cranberries; an equal part mix of maple syrup and molasses, respectively). A handful of offerings may initially seem amusing to American homecooks (Reindeer Meatloaf), but each recipe features techniques and flavor profiles easily transferrable for cooks who know their way around a kitchen. Celebrate Canada’s culinary history with either (or both!) Feast: Recipes and Stories from a Canadian Road Trip by Lindsay Anderson and Dana VanVeller (Appetite by Random House, 2017) and Pantry and Plate by Simon Thibault (Nimbus Publishing Ltd., 2017). They each provide an excellent opportunity to explore and indulge in Canada’s rich and delicious traditions. Order them online or find them at your local bookseller. Au bon repas! Simon Thibault’s Pantry and Palate shares homey recipes that represent his Acadian heritage. The New France colony known as “L’Acadie” which once included lands bordering the Atlantic coast—roughly between the 40th and 46th parallels— left a rich culinary legacy behind. Inspired by his grandfather’s journals, Thibault explores every aspect of the foodways preserved within, from bread baking and preservation to lard rendering and tete de cochon, or as the author puts it, “Head: The Other Meat.” The book’s warm tones and intimate photography will certainly inspire any homecook’s desire to create a thematic wintertime feast, replete with any one of the many recipes featuring potatoes, a hearty staple of the Acadian root cellar. But as a cook and a reader, I find it is Thibault’s casual and easy storytelling that makes this cookbook special. With remembrances and family lore woven into the prefaces and preambles, working your way through Pantry and Plate feels more like you’re cooking your longtime BFF’s family history than following an instructional how-to from a stranger.

2018:
the year you became a better gardener by Elizabeth Licata

early resolutions are either impossible to keep or too prohibitive to be fun. Why not try an incremental promise that this is the year to make the domestic landscape more attractive and enjoyable? Gardens are healthy, serene, and beautiful places to be, and gardening is good physical exercise that might help with some of those other resolutions. And there are plenty of experts to show you the way, as the first three books in this crop of recently published gardening titles demonstrate. The last two titles are included purely for inspiration.

House Plants: The Complete Guide to Choosing, Growing, and Caring for Indoor Plants
Photos courtesy of Quarto Publishing Group USA Inc.
Lisa Eldred Steinkopf Cool Springs Press/Quarto Group, 2017 Gardening does not stop in the winter, especially not if you’re riding the popular new wave: houseplants. Apparently, millennials are now surrounding themselves with plants indoors; many of us have always appreciated their decorative qualities and health benefits. There’s always a great new houseplant book on the shelves; this year, it’s Lisa Eldred’s, which is split into eighty pages of how-to and troubleshooting and about 150 pages of individual plant profiles. The book is filled with basic, common sense on how to keep them alive and provides a large and diverse range of great choices, with their preferred conditions. We also highly recommend Tovah Martin’s The Indesctrucatable Houseplant (Timber Press, 2015). Holiday Shopping Guide | 2017 129
Glorious Shade Jenny Rose Carey Timber Press, 2017 It’s time more gardeners recognized that partial shade represents an opportunity, not an obstacle. In the heat of summer, shady areas are cool, refreshing retreats. And if the shade is provided by trees, there are the additional benefits of providing habitat, natural air conditioning for the buildings beneath, and essential carbon sequestration. Carey’s book is roughly split into two parts: the first instructs on cultivation and design while the second provides a lengthy list of trees, shrubs, perennials, tropicals, and annuals that tolerate shade. Some of the best cultivars for Western New York include trees: river birch

(betula), Kousa dogwood (cornus), black tupelo (nyssa); shrubs: Abelia, aronia, fothergilla and (of course) hydrangea; and perennials: cranesbill (geranium), helleborus, Martagon lily, and variegated Solomon’s Seal (polygonatum odoratum).
There are special trouble-shooting sections for more problematic shade areas, like around tree roots, in dry shade, and for special soil conditions, as well as instructions on planting rain gardens and even xeric gardens. It’s time to embrace shade.
The Beginner’s Guide to Starting a Garden
Images courtesy of Timber Press, Inc
Sally Roth Timber Press, 2017 Have a blank slate (i.e., weed-filled wilderness)? Here’s an alternative to spending thousands on garden design/ landscaping. Sally Roth advises beginning gardeners to start small, say, at the mailbox, and move on to other areas. She has chosen twelve possible garden spaces—the front lawn, the space between houses, the space around a tree, and so on—and provided simple plans, plant lists, and general advice that will help transform each area. Among the many tips, instructions, and ideas included throughout the book: • The Magnificent Seven: Seven plants that will provide color from April through August • Coleus Comes Through: A couple coleus plants can provide more and longer coverage than twice as many expensive perennial foliage plants.
• Repetition is important • Multipurpose Rocks: Some well-placed rocks can substitute for yearly mulch applications Starting a Garden also addresses some basic, ordinary problems that get left out of many glossy garden books. How to draw attention away from your neighbor’s collection of disabled cars? What shouldn’t you plant along a driveway? How can you make sure sprawling border plants don’t impede sidewalk traffic? This is a beginners’ garden book that really will help beginners. Holiday Shopping Guide | 2017 131
The Secret Gardeners: Britain’s Creatives Reveal Their Private Sanctuaries Victoria Summerley, photos by Hugo Rittsom Thomas Frances Lincoln/Quarto, 2017 What do Jeremy Irons and Ozzy Osbourne have in common? We know they’re Brits, so the answer shouldn’t be that hard: both own and maintain beautiful countryside gardens in England. So do Andrew Lloyd Webber, Rupert Everett, and Sting. And if you want something completely different, visit Terry and Maggie Gilliam’s London retreat.

fessionals. There are castles, manors, coach houses, Regency villas, and former priories. The gardens are equally varied, though all contain that lush, formal/informal quality that seems only possible in Great Britain. And there are plenty of small, quirky structures, or, as they call them in the UK, “follies.” This is a perfect coffee table gift book with the added interest of some genteel celebrity gossip.

Chances are none of us will ever be able to see any of these private estates, so it’s a good thing writer Victoria Summerley and photographer Hugo Rittson Thomas have collaborated on a book that describes and depicts them—lavishly. Secret Gardens focuses on British “creatives” and their (mostly) large properties, most of which have been landscaped with the help of well-known pro-

Gardens of the High Line Piet Oudolf, Rick Darke Timber Press, 2017 This book is not a substitute for a visit to New York City’s High Line. If possible, the former elevated railway—now one of the world’s most famous public parks—should be explored first. Then it’s time to read Gardens of the High Line, which details, in full, the before, during, and after of this reinvented urban landscape, described and illustrated in every season, from every angle. Written by Piet Oudolf, a member of the High Line design team (led by James Corner Field Operations), and Rick Darke, another well-known landscape designer who has been photographing the park since 2002, Gardens of the High Line is the definitive guide. Every section of the
134 Holiday Shopping Guide | 2017
park, from the Gansevoort Woodland at Thirteenth Street to the Wildflower Field at Thirtieth Street, is explored, explained, and beautifully photographed. There are also examples of the gardens that influenced and inspired the High Line’s design and plant palette. Piet Oudolf was chosen to help design the High Line largely because of his work with Chicago’s Lurie Gardens, which contain layered blocks of plants in spontaneous, naturalistic configurations. That spontaneity has been recreated on the abandoned industrial canvas of a former elevated railway on New York’s lower West Side, where visitors often feel they are walking through wild prairies and woodlands. Another important takeaway from a visit to the High Line is the fact that so many perennials, shrubs, and trees can thrive at a planting depth of (mostly) nine to eighteen inches. Many of them are indigenous to the region; some are not. Their success is the result of continual experimentation and refinement. The lively design, gorgeous photography, and clear, detailed writing in this book do justice to the groundbreaking brilliance of its subject.
