hile the concept of beauty being in the eye of the beholder dominates philosophy and art and even love, one thing is certain: people are conscious of how they look, and anything from a bad hair day to a flattering dress can affect how they feel. If a person doesn’t feel attractive, they may approach their day in a different way or avoid opportunities because of lack of confidence about their appearance. According to Dr. Samuel Shatkin Jr., of Aesthetic Associates Centre (with more than twenty-eight years in practice), “Sometimes you improve the look and the outlook at the same time. If you feel better about yourself, you’ll be more confident in the workplace, with your partner, with your family and friends.” And, it’s not necessarily just becoming “pretty,” either. Plastic surgeons do amazing work (often pro bono) to assist people with disfigurement, visible birth defects, or undesirable birthmarks. That so many wonderful tools exist, and so many talented and charitable practitioners and surgeons work in this area is a boon to Western New York. People who watch shows like E!’s Botched see the near-miracles of revisionist surgery that repairs the work of other plastic surgeons (often sought outside of the country to save money) or improves disfigurements in lifechanging ways. But what if you just want changes you feel will enhance your appearance? You choose your clothes, you choose your makeup, you cut your hair—all to affect your outward presentation—so why not consider other options? From injectables like Botox®, to lasers for hair removal or resurfacing, to the more serious procedures like breast augmentation or facelifts, you can choose the degree to which you want to dip your toe in the plastic surgery pool. “We spend a lot of personal time with the patient,” says Dr. Danielle Dauria of Buffalo Niagara Plastic Surgery, “and thoroughly educate them about what the procedure entails, and what the results will be, and we let the patient decide.” It’s important to develop that relationship, because you don’t want to expect the impossible, and you want to make the choice that’s best for you. Educate yourself, and ask questions, questions, questions. The most popular procedures nationwide are also the most popular here in WNY: breast augmentation, liposuction, tummy tucks,

eyelid lifts, and nose reshaping—and injectables. Botox® not only helps reduce wrinkles, but also helps them from becoming more established by temporarily paralyzing the muscles that create wrinkle-causing repetitive facial expressions. While the injectable is at work, your face is being retrained to not make those movements, because it can’t. The results last from three to four months, but the rest those muscles get from not being activated helps in its own way. There are also injectable fillers that can last much longer. “Juvéderm® and Restylane® can last up
to a year,” says Western New York Plastic Surgery’s Dr. Andrew P. Giacobbe, “and there are some new fillers, Juvéderm Vollure™ and Juvéderm Volbella® that can last up to eighteen months.” These are used in two particular areas of the face where aging is most visible. Vollure™ is used for smile lines, nasolabial folds, those parentheses from the nose to lips, and Volbella® is used for the small up and down lines that appear around the lips, especially in smokers. “The face tends to lose volume over time,” says Dr. Anne Ramsdell

Feeling better about your appearance will help with the first face, but also increase confidence about the second, and, most importantly, the third. of Niagara Dermatology Associates, “and it shows in the cheeks, the lips, and in the lines or wrinkles that form as a result of that loss of volume.” But, in addition to the volume, Dr. Ramsdell emphasizes the effectiveness of combining injectables with some laser resurfacing, or using the laser to address brown spots or skin texture, both of which give more of an appearance of aging than wrinkles. Sunspots removed by lasers are usually gone for good, and while ongoing exposure to the sun can create new spots, particularly in those that freckle or burn easily, if you’re careful and take your doctor’s advice about sun exposure, you can maintain the results. If it’s the opposite of volume loss that worries you, e.g.,. that extra fat under your chin and around your chin line, there is a permanent solution. The injectable Kybella® is a naturally occurring substance that stimulates macrophages in your body to consume the dissolved fat and naturally excrete it. “Some patients only need one treatment,” says Dr. Giacobbe, “but it’s more common to have two treatments, about one to two months apart.” That such a common symptom of aging— and one frequently lamented—can be eradicated so easily is a wonderful advancement in anti-aging treatments. All sorts of female care can be found at Women’s Medicine of Niagara, which not only offers gynecology and obstetrics services, but also laser hair removal, popular injectables, facial rejuvenation and resurfacing, and yes, vaginal rejuvenation. If you’ve pushed a few babies through there, things may not be the same, and vaginal rejuvenation is designed to increase sexual gratification—not a bad byproduct. Dr. Renee Baughman and Dr. Donna Feldman treat patients from puberty to menopause and beyond to help women take care of their health, as well as how they feel about themselves and their appearance. There is a Japanese proverb which says that you have three faces. “The first face, you show to the world. The second face, you show to your
close friends, and your family. The third face, you never show anyone. It is the truest reflection of who you are.” Feeling better about your appearance will help with the first face, but also increase confidence
about the second, and, most importantly, the third. Terri Parsell Hilmey is a freelance writer living in Clarence Center.

BUFFALO:
A light in the darkness BY REBECCA CUTHBERT
W
hen Western New Yorkers turn on the news, they see acts of terror at home and abroad, natural disasters chewing up and spitting out entire regions, and political upheaval that won’t be quelled by logic or emotion. As we move into this holiday season, some heart-heavy residents may be tempted to leave the colorful lights boxed in the basement, the ornaments unwrapped, the stockings unhung. Don’t. What Buffalo—and the world—needs is not less light, but more. We need crackling fireplaces and kisses beneath mistletoe and glowing menorahs. We need to retain and proclaim our humanity with every ring of every Salvation Army bell and every song sung in every holy place in the 716. We need to lift one another up. The only way out is through, and, as it has before, the Queen City can lead the way. Owners, managers, and employees at companies in and around Buffalo are throwing their shoulders into making our corner of the planet a bit better and brighter. RBC Wealth Management, one of the world’s leading diversified financial services companies with an office conveniently located in Williamsville, has a long history of helping others and no plans to slow down its efforts. “[RBC has] made substantial commitments from the local office and our corporate foundation to the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Buffalo City Mission, Buffalo Riverkeepers, Explore and More Children’s Museum, and Sabah, to name a few,” says Chris Shafer, senior vice president and branch director for RBC, explaining that helping
the local community has always been a part of RBC’s philosophy. “Help where and when you can.” To contact Shafer and his team of professionals about personal wealth management, retirement planning, and more, call 635-8400. Legacy Western New York is for those who want to help their fellow man beyond their lifetimes. Leave a Legacy is “a collaborative effort among non-profit organizations, estate and financial planning professionals, and the media to promote gifts to charities through wills and estate plans,” explains Betsy Constantine, executive vice president for the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo. “[The program] encourages people of all ages and backgrounds to make gifts to the non-profit organizations of their choice.” Social service and arts organizations, churches, hospitals, educational institutions, and other non-profit groups of all types participate in Leave a Legacy. The initiative started in Columbus, Ohio, in 1994, Constantine shares, and, since then, it has united more than 100 communities throughout the US and Canada to promote awareness of the importance of remembering special causes, and sharing your wishes with your loved ones. “[The effort] inspires people from all walks of life and all income levels to think beyond their lifespan when doing good works,” Constantine says. “Imagine how much good could be done if each one of us remembered a favorite charity or cause in our will or estate plan. The impact would be immeasurable. Leaving a bequest to a valued charity or

cause is a wonderful way we can continue our generosity after we’re gone. Leave a Legacy will benefit every non-profit, but it’s particularly important for those lacking the staff and resources to initiate a planned giving program on their own. Our bequests not only help our chosen beneficiaries, they also set a positive example for others. “M eaningful donations can come from anyone, not just the very wealthy, and in any size,” Constantine continues. “All of us, regardless of our means, should consider including charitable bequests when
we draw up a will. What’s more, every estate, regardless of size, deserves to be planned. Only through a will can we make sure our wishes are carried out.” To order a free “my legacy” kit, go to leavealegacywny.org/Individuals. Particularly compelled to give within the Buffalo community are the businesses that have been thriving since well before the clanging quieted in the steel mills. Santora’s Pizza Pub & Grill, located on Transit Road and Millersport Highway in Williamsville, has been open since 1927. Now in its fourth generation of family owners, Santora’s helps the community that has so long hosted their parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents, back to Grandpa Fioravanti. Paul Santora shared a long list of the local organizations Santora’s has partnered with to help further their good causes. Among them are Variety: The Children’s Charity, Susan G. Komen Foundation, Food Bank of WNY, Child & Family Services, 97 Rock’s “Christmas on Us!,” St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, State University of New York at Buffalo, and more. “During football season, we donated a dollar for every adult beverage sold to the Susan G. Komen Foundation,” he says, “and this year for our Thanksgiving Eve party, we [made] it a speakeasy party and collected non-perishable goods or a five-dollar donation [from each participant] that goes directly to the Food Bank of WNY. We piggybacked on 97 Rock’s ‘Operation: Rock Out Hunger’ program.” For 97 Rock’s “Christmas on Us!” program, Santora’s collects gift certificates for a local family in need. To help the kids of St. Jude’s and their families, Santora’s sold charity slips for one dollar each at both locations. Over the years, Santora’s has donated tens of thousands of dollars of food to various organizations at the University at Buffalo campus including,

specifically, the university’s athletic programs. Santora’s funds and runs the Pastor Cooper Basketball Tournament held annually at Daemen College, and contributes to the PALS Basketball Tournament. “Western New York has given our family so much over the years, we feel that it is our obligation to support and give to those who need help,” Santora says. This holiday season, not despite our nation’s turmoil but because of it, rock around the Christmas tree harder and louder than ever before. Dig deeper into your pockets. Take up collections at the office and gym and
yoga studio. Because while it’s true that one person can’t save the world, it’s also true that each community can work to help itself and its neighbors, and that kindness spreads faster than floodwaters. Hope can flourish without naivete; all it takes is everyone doing what they can to lend a hand. Now string up those twinkle lights and plug them in!
