From the 2017 Go Red For Women Luncheon: Suzanne Novelli, Nina Taylor, Shannon Jayasinghe, and Lynda Marino
American Heart Month: time for women to take control of their health Cardiovascular disease, which includes stroke, claims a woman’s life about every eighty seconds. And, as the number one killer in the nation, it is responsible for the deaths of one in three women. The good news: roughly eighty percent of cardiovascular diseases may be prevented through lifestyle changes, beginning with understanding family health history and knowing your numbers. Know your family history Some risk factors—blood pressure, smoking, cholesterol, and lack of regular physical activity—can be controlled. You can’t control age, gender, and family history.
Mercy Hospital of Buffalo; if you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to contact your physician or seek help right away. “Rather than dismiss their symptoms or put caring for others before themselves, women need to acknowledge the signs and seek help early.” T he Buffalo Niag ara American Heart Association’s Go Red For Women campaign harnesses the energy, passion, and power of women to advocate, encourage awareness, and raise funds to fight heart disease in women. It challenges them to know their risk for heart disease and take action to reduce it. It also gives them the tools they need to lead a hearthealthy life. Money raised from the Go Red For Women movement funds local community awareness, wellness, education, and vital research by the American Heart Association. Currently, the American Heart Association funds $1.9 million for research taking place right in Buffalo. Your support of Go Red For Women can help save lives. Facts to know Less than twenty percent of women meet the Federal Physical Activity Guidelines, which recommend a minimum of seventy-five weekly minutes of vigorous activity, or 150 of moderate exercise for adults.
Know your numbers and act The five critical health numbers all women should know are: 1. Total cholesterol 2. HDL cholesterol 3. Blood pressure 4. Blood sugar 5. Body mass index (BMI) “Women need to know that their symptoms could be very different from the classic symptoms we have come to know in men. They could experience neck, jaw, or shoulder pain, unusual fatigue, or abdominal pain,” notes Dr. Salvior Mok, MD, American Heart Association volunteer and cardiothoracic surgeon at the Catholic Health Heart Center at

More than fifty percent of high blood pressure-related deaths are female. About 4.1 million stroke survivors alive today are women. Stroke is the fifth highest cause of death in the United States but number three killer in Western New York, killing nearly 130,000 people a year. That’s roughly one in every twenty deaths. Each year, about 55,000 more females than males have strokes. Heart disease and stroke affect women of all ethnicities. “You can’t change the genes you were born with, but you can lead a healthier life,” Dr. Mok says. “Being active, eating right, limiting alcohol consumption, and not smoking are all things you can do to live a longer, healthier life.” For more information about Go Red For Women, contact Nina Lenhard Taylor at 243-4609 or email Nina.Lenhard@heart.org.
