PROTECT YOUR IDENTITY BY WENDY GUILD SWEARINGEN

S

omeone in the United States just became the victim of identity theft. Was it you? It happens on a daily basis all across the country. Some people don’t find out that they’ve fallen victim to identity thieves until untold damage is done. According to a March 2015 report from Javelin Strategy & Research, more than $16 billion was stolen from 12.7 million identity fraud victims in 2014 alone. With technology becoming increasingly advanced, hackers are becoming increasingly devious, which means it’s more common than ever before to have your identity stolen. “Having your identity hacked is a massive headache, not to mention big business for fraudsters,” says Robert Elder, CEO of Elder Insurance Services. “Gaining back your life after being victimized by identity theft is extremely difficult, which is why prevention is key.”

Preventing identity theft Carry only the basic essential documents with you. This means carry one credit or debit card if you’re not paying with cash. Do not carry your Social Security card, birth certificate, or passport outside the house so a scammer won’t have all your personal information needed to set up accounts in your name. Be aware of your mail—and your trashcan. When ordering new personal or business checks, pick them up at the bank instead of having

them sent to your home. This makes it harder for checks to be stolen, altered, and cashed by identity thieves. Also, consider opting out of unsolicited mail (credit card applications, etc.) at the website dmachoice.org/MPS. Promptly remove credit applications when you receive them or have someone pick up your mail for you. And shred all receipts, credit card offers, bank statements, financial applications, returned checks, and any other sensitive information before disposing of them to prevent someone from going through your trash. Do not give out personal information over the phone. Identity thieves may call, posing as banks or government agencies. Do not give out personal information over the phone unless you initiated the call to a verified and trustworthy person or organization. Keep a list of credit account numbers, expiration dates and telephone numbers on file. If your wallet is stolen, being able to quickly alert your creditors is essential. Ensure

they are stored somewhere safe in case of fire, flood, or other disaster. Create passwords or PIN numbers out of a random mix of letters and numbers. Doing so makes it harder for identity thieves to discover these codes, and makes it easier for you to prevent identity theft. Easy to remember passwords are often easily hacked. Don’t use family or pet names, birthdays, addresses, or any other information that could be easily discovered by hackers. Get preventative coverage. Many insurance companies offer protection services. Should you fall victim, there are restorative services as well. Freeze your credit. Take advantage of the New York State Security Freeze Law, which locks access to a credit file and prevents someone from opening a new credit card under your name, by visiting consumer.state. ny.us/security_freeze.htm. Check your credit report. You should review your credit report at

Study monthly account statements carefully, and call the institution immediately if anything looks suspicious, such as unfamiliar debit or charges, or evidence of an unfamiliar account. Vigilance is key. By simply paying attention to your accounts and protecting your online identity, you may be able to head off identity theft. The little bit of time you invest in keeping track of your credit and accounts can save you a lot of headaches—and money. HELP FOR VICTIMS What should you do if someone has stolen your identity? Notify the institution involved immediately, and then call the police. Erie County residents should follow the instructions on

the Erie County Sheriff’s Office web page: erie.gov/sheriff/idtheft. htm; Niagara County residents can call the sheriff’s office at 438-3393.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES for seniors BY JUDITH A. RUCKI

N

early a quarter of Americans, more than 75 million people, were born between 1946 and 1964—baby boomers are a serious force. While many boomers are still enjoying careers, this demographic has increasingly been facing retirement and its varied options for filling a larger number of discretionary hours. Staying involved and active by contributing to the community is a popular choice. If you’re interested in donating time to a good cause, start by going to volunteerwny.org. Here you’ll find worthwhile organizations and their contact information. This website is powered by The Service Collaboration of WNY and United Way of Buffalo & Erie County. The opportunities for volunteers seem boundless. Here are more ideas, but still only a fraction of what is available: • Boomers often use retirement to spend more time with their grandchildren, so why not engage the older ones in joint ventures like visiting nursing home residents or tagging along on walks to benefit local charities? • Members of a house of worship will find there is always a committee in need of volunteers,

or seasonal projects that require additional hands. • Anyone with basic office skills to offer will find myriad opportunities. From political campaigns to non-profit organizations, there are envelopes to be stuffed, phones to be answered, and files to maintain. Speaking of nonprofits, they are always in need of promotion and fundraising. Here’s the chance to turn on the charm and bring in donations for a good cause. • Check with your alma mater; you may be able to serve on a board or committee that will help future alumni advance. • Have talent? Assisted living and nursing home facilities welcome individuals or groups to provide musical or other entertainment. If

you’re not musically inclined, you may want to lead a discussion on a specific topic, current event, or book. Presenting arts and crafts projects is another option. • Consider Hearts and Hands: Faith in Action, which describes itself as a not-for-profit, neighborhelping-neighbor organization. It pairs trained volunteers with older, frail, and physically challenged adults for doorthrough-door transportation and non-medical in-home support. Even in your own neighborhood, it could be something as informal as taking over an occasional meal or helping with some household chores. • Look for ways to use skills you already possess. Accountants, for example, can provide

ARTICLES

FOREVER YOUNG low-income workers with tax preparation services. Habitat for Humanity needs individuals with plumbing, electrical, and HVAC experience. Teachers can help with homework at after-school programs. At Seneca Street CDC, students receive more than help with homework; they also enjoy enrichment activities like sewing, cooking and science. Opportunities also abound at agencies that assist with English as a Second Language. • If you like public speaking, become a docent at a gallery or museum. Or volunteer to talk to the public about individual organizations, or join a speakers’ bureau. • Agencies serving the refugee community need volunteers for everything from nurturing children to mentoring adults looking to establish themselves in professional careers.

• Sports enthusiasts take note: most coaching positions for Little League and similar organizations are volunteer. • If you’re friendly and able to answer a single phone line, dispatchers are needed in Clarence, Orchard Park, and areas further south of the city to assist residents in scheduling transportation for doctor’s appointments, grocery shopping, banking, and other needs. • Anyone partial to outdoor work might enjoy becoming a Habitat & Trail Steward with the Reinstein Woods Environmental Education Center. • If you like lifting spirits, become a wish-granting volunteer with Make-A-Wish Metro NY and Western NY. Hospitals also need greeters and friendly folks to work in their gift shops.

These are just a few suggestions. Many organizations seeking volunteers have training programs, so, if you have an area of interest, ask how you might be put to use. It may be for a single project or program, or you might find an opportunity that keeps you working with an organization for years. Whether or not you’re retired or just looking to give back to your community, know one thing: you are needed! And think how great you are going to feel knowing you made a difference. FY Judith A. NO-FEAR FASHION after fifty

BY REBECCA CUTHBERT

Carmen Rivera toasts her fifty-seventh birthday; Photo by Rebecca Cuthbert

C

armen Rivera, professor of Spanish and Latino Literature at SUNY Fredonia, celebrated her fifty-seventh birthday on January 28, but being eligible for senior discounts doesn’t mean she feels the need to wear “senior clothing,” and she urges other mature women to adopt the same attitude. Society seems to pressure women of a certain age to cover up with long sleeves, long pants, long skirts, she says, but “Why? Who do think they think they’re going to offend? It’s like you hit a certain age, and everyone expects you to just wear turtlenecks and the jogging suits in pastels and neutrals. But I’m not afraid of color. I’m not afraid to wear beautiful things. I’m a woman; I love to look feminine.” More than that, Rivera has a bold style that she describes as “wearable art. I shop at boutiques. I like to find one-of-a-kind outfits. I wear statement pieces, like silver jewelry and patterned scarves to dress up something simple like a black sweater and slacks. I don’t go into chain stores so I can look like everyone else— that’s not fun. Fashion should be fun. It should make you feel good.” Rivera thinks of a person’s appearance as his or her “ticket of

introduction,” and, she says, people should take that into consideration, not just on first dates or interviews, but all the time. “What are you saying when you walk into a room?” she poses. “Make people look twice. It’s hard to be dismissive of a person when they look put together. When you look good, you feel it; you carry yourself differently and people notice that.” Rivera says her standout style may have been influenced by her Puerto Rican heritage, or the strong women in her life—like a great aunt who still gets dolled up, with lipstick and all, even though she’s over 100. “Back in Puerto Rico, even my family members who were poor, who worked as subsistence farmers, basically, would get totally dressed up on Sundays,” she recalls. “White suits, hats, gloves—everyone had a Sunday outfit that was just out-of-

this-world. It was a sense of pride.” Sometimes Rivera’s friends tease her about dressing up—they can never catch her in pajamas, or without earrings—but she takes the jibes as compliments. “I tell them that I feel naked if I don’t wear earrings,” she says. “I can’t help it. If I leave the house without earrings, I will call my husband Phil and get him to bring me a pair.” Contrary to the old myth, beauty does not have to be painful, Rivera insists. “Everyone thinks that comfort and style are opposite things, especially [in Western New York], where it’s always a blizzard,” she says. “The lie is that there’s nothing in between. Sweaters and bright or patterned jackets are just as warm as ‘World’s Best Grandma’ sweatshirts. So [my friends] might tease me, but I’m used to going to the opera and getting dressed up. My husband

FOREVER YOUNG wears a tuxedo, and I will put on an evening gown. Everyone else is in jeans and those snow boots. But when you go out, it should be an event.” It’s not just how people see you that will change when you let your sexy or sassy side out, Rivera maintains; the way you see the world around you will change, too. “When you look good, and you feel good, it makes you enjoy everything more,” she says. “It makes you feel celebratory. Food tastes better. Music is more beautiful. You laugh more.” If you find that you have been caught in society’s bland, beige trap, Rivera has a few suggestions to help you break free: “Look for clean lines, something you feel good in,” she suggests. “Find things that are high quality, that you can have for years. A basic black dress can be worn with different jackets, scarves, and jewelry to fit lots of occasions. Buy pumps that are comfortable but that look nice.

And try some color! I love blues and deep purples, but I’m on an orange kick right now!” The ability to appreciate your body’s assets—hips that still sway, a graceful collarbone, shining eyes— shouldn’t diminish with age. Wear the colors and patterns and textures that show off those features and make everyone else notice them, too. Like love and passion and learning,

fashion is open to those who are willing to make room for it. “Dress up. Dress up for the fun of it,” Rivera recommends. “Regardless of age or economics or body type. Throw some flash. I do. I love it!” FY Rebecca Cuthbert is a frequent contributor to Forever Young and Buffalo Spree.

WHAT THE BUTTONS ARE FOR BY ED ADAMCZYK

W

e have lived long enough to experience a world in which button-pushing performs tasks that used to require strength, manual labor, research, or just time; loosely defined, it’s called “interface,” but we aren’t interfacing enough. Many of us don’t even know what all the buttons are for. Push buttons, sliders, rocker switches: they’re on television remotes, smartphones, steering wheels, and all the other devices we hold and use regularly. Many use pictograms meant to simply define function, like those buttons on the steering wheel—telephone receiver off its cradle, telephone receiver in its cradle. Though the function is new, those particular icons are a nod to our history (how many people still use phones that look like that?) and a way to ease the transition. So are the TV remote pictograms for the streaming functions “fast forward” and “rewind,” the same ones you remember from your audio cassette player. But, because it’s a new age, there are new functions, ones with logos, icons, and symbols we don’t understand. So how do we use them?

Regrettably, in too many cases we don’t, thus denying ourselves the rewards they bring. There was once a joke about the display panel of a video cassette recorder always flashing “12:00” because the user was unable to figure out how to set the time; these days, the joke is subtler: a finger pointed to a cellphone button with the comment, “I don’t know what this is for.” Most devices we’ve ever used, from electric can openers to threeway light switches, were new once, and easy once we got the hang of them. The difference today is that the things we own have even more features, and features that aren’t easily discerned. But their function simplifies the stuff in life which should be simplified, and learning about them is worthwhile. For example, even the simplest

landline cordless telephone has a “chirp” feature to find the handset when it’s separated from its base station. Just press the button and the handset, wherever you left it, will squawk, calling attention to its location under the couch. Some TV remote buttons glow a deep ruby color when the “light” button is pushed, an attractive and useful thing when the living room lights are low. In cars, telephone conversations can be conducted by shouting at the windshield, hands never leaving the wheel. These man-machine relationships confer myriad benefits, and once you learn how to use them, you’ll wonder how you survived without the conveniences. You interface with them—that’s the term—unless you ignore them, and lacking a tech savvy

ARTICLES 13

FOREVER YOUNG grandchild to show you the ropes, the easiest way to make them do your bidding is to play with them, mess with them to see what they can do, read the manual if one is available, or, irony of ironies, just push “Help.” They are designed to be intuitive and, in most cases, they actually are, which means once you get the idea, it feels right. All these features, awaiting a simple push command, are reminders that we live in the technological age. What once took a hammer now takes a thumb movement; we need only meet the machine considerably less than halfway to make it do our bidding. Your driver’s seat, for example, is likely loaded with little motors that make for precise adjustments: a flat-handled lever for back-and-forth, a vertical one to alter the rake of the seat back, and so forth, all in place so they require only a little blind tinkering

with one hand to find your comfort. They’re all like that, all those buttons on devices you have scattered across the table, perhaps confusing at first but replete with “aha” moments, followed by “ah” moments every time you use them. Don’t let those advantages go unused simply because you’ve never tried hitting the buttons. Master the buttons… and then ask someone about apps. YOU ARE NOT ALONE! powerful tools for caregivers BY SANDY WHITE, Local and National Radio/Television Talk Show Host

Powerful Tools for Caregivers Master Trainer Elder Larry Wiggins

“I

thought I could do it all myself, but I was cracking up,” said veteran registered nurse Lynette Hicks. The pressure of caregiving was taking hold in her job and her home as she tried to take care of her mother who was suffering Alzheimer’s disease and a brother dying from kidney cancer. According to the National Center on Caregiving, a substantial body of research shows that family members who provide care to loved ones with chronic or disabling conditions are themselves at risk. “My marriage was suffering; my life was unraveling. Just getting together with the people and learning how to cope in the Powerful Tools for Caregivers education program made the difference,” said Hicks. The six-week Erie County sponsored program designed for caregivers is a lifeline for caregivers who usually think of themselves last. There is evidence that shows most caregivers are not prepared for their role and the reality that they may have little or no support. Powerful Tools for Caregivers master trainer Elder Larry Wiggins says there are a number of benefits participants receive from the program. “People learn how to reduce stress, improve self-confidence, better communicate feelings, balance their life, locate resources and increase their ability to make tough decisions.” Wiggins, Chaplain at Terrace View Long Term Care facility on the ECMC campus, is one of three Powerful Tools for Caregivers master trainers in Erie County. “When someone comes to you at the last class and gives you a hug with tears rolling down their face, saying thank you for saving their life, it’s confirmation that the work we do as master trainers is valuable. As a minister I feel it’s important to be able to minister to the total man. That is the body, soul, and spirit,” said Wiggins who is the health care proxy for his sister who receives dialysis three times a week. Wiggins was the former Chaplain of the Erie County

Home for 15 years; he is sensitive to the needs of Erie County’s growing senior community and their families. He says the Erie County Department of Senior Services program is vital for families dealing with stress unaware of resources in their community. Erie County Long Term Care Coordinator Daniel Szewc says his team is standing ready to help. “Caregivers can call The Erie County Department of Senior Services to discuss options, learn

about programs and get linked to a Caregiver Case Manager to help them plan for the care of their loved one,’ said Szewc. The life of a caregiver is rewarding and sometimes very challenging says Ron Pokorski. For the last twenty years he has cared for his wife who is disabled. As her primary caregiver he is her lifeline; she is half blind, partially paralyzed and unable speak, write or read. The two have developed their own means

FOREVER YOUNG of communication and it works says Pokorski, “Being a spousal caregiver is a little different, A lot of the time before taking the Powerful Tools for Caregiving classes, I was experiencing guilt. I would feel guilty that I was not able to entertain my wife all the time like I did when we first got married.” Taking the course he says helped him see he needed to care for himself too! “I think I learned about---dealing with guilt—positive self-talk---it helped a lot.” Today Pokorski is giving back and is now a trainer helping others find joy and balance in their lives. So who helps those who help others? That’s where Powerful Tools comes in says Wiggins. He points to a local pastor who is the minister of an active congregation who has lovingly cared for her daughter with special needs for 30 years.” Pastor Gloria Payne of St. Phillips Episcopal Church says difficult though it may be, it has always been a labor of love. “What I took away from the Powerful Tools program as a participant was personal. Very simply, I learned to give myself permission to take time out in the morning to relax and read the daily morning newspaper. I was also encouraged to take time outside of the realm of my work to just ---let go!” Pastor Gloria Payne says she has witnessed amazing results for church members participating in the program. “ I observed that people took the training to heart. Many of them were taking care of elderly

family members and lifelong friends and needed support.” One church member in particular invited a sibling who was a primary caregiver to the class. Thanks to the Powerful Tools conversation, a new schedule of care was put in place for that family's loved one; allowing the primary caregiver time to breathe and find time to enjoy life. Payne says caregivers and their families need to know they are not alone and that we are here with resources to support them. The first step is to acknowledge you need help says Long Term Care Coordinator Daniel Szewc. “There are services available to help the person in need of care as well as support and respite options for the caregiver,” said Szewc. According to the National Center on Caregiving and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 21% of households in the US are impacted by caregiving responsibilities. That caregiving statistic is expected to increase as the number of people age 65 and older increases. By 2025, the number of people age 65 and older with Alzheimer’s disease is estimated to reach 7.1 million — a 40 percent increase from 2015 according to the Alzheimer’s Association. In Western New York, a safety net is being strengthened by a recently awarded New York State Department of Health five-year comprehensive caregiver support initiative. It is designed to increase support and will impact caregivers of loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease and other
