News and information about health and medicine comes at us each day at a furious pace—this past year's media was especially health focused because of the cornonavirus pandemic. There are abundant studies on aging along with ideas for keeping our minds sharp. Being social and interacting with others is important, but COVID-19 concerns have been keeping us away from each other. Standing coffee dates, bridge games, book clubs, yoga classes, and other activities that keep us engaged with family and friends have either been canceled or severely limited. While we are waiting for our daily routines to go back to what was normal for us, there are things we can do to stave off depression and anxiety. Here are some ideas for keeping our brains healthy now and in the future. Exercise Regular exercise improves our memory and cognitive skills. Walking can benefit both our bodies and our brains. As of this writing, gyms are mostly closed, but there are plenty of on-line fitness classes that can help get us moving. Tai chi, for one, can benefit both mind and body. See if a loved one would

like to join you—it will benefit you both and keep you accountable. Eat well A variety of foods have been linked to a healthy brain. Try some new recipes using ingredients like fatty fish (especially salmon), eggs, and blueberries. Along with drinking plenty of water, try green tea. Read and write The journal Neurology reports that regular reading and writing in our senior years can reduce the rate of memory decline by 32 percent. This could be the time to tackle that novel you always meant to read—or write. Grandparents

can employ FaceTime or Skype and read to their grandchildren. Bring back the art of letter writing and make someone’s day. Poetry, creative writing, and blogging are other avenues to explore. E-mail is an easy way to flex your writing muscles and catch up with someone you can’t see in person. Get artsy Try your hand at painting, coloring, or drawing. Your creation does not need to be museum worthy. You’re providing intellectual activity for your brain in a joyful outlet. Adult coloring books provide both calm and creativity, too.

Dust off an instrument you used to play and make some noise. Learn a new language Most of us studied at least one language back in our school days. Revisit that language or look into learning a new one. Your cognitive functioning is sure to improve.

Seniors need between seven and eight hours of sleep every night. According to the National Sleep Foundation, memories and newly learned skills move to more permanent regions of the brain while you are asleep. This makes for easier recall.

Learning a Language? Your Brain Will Thank You BY JENNIFER MERRICK

“L

ike drinking from a mental fountain of youth,” is how author William Alexander describes the benefits of studying French on his

brain.

In his thoroughly enjoyable book, Flirting with French: How a Language Charmed Me, Seduced Me, and Nearly Broke My Heart, he chronicles his year-long quest to learn the language of love. Despite Alexander’s best efforts to master the language through classes, Meetup groups, television, and even a two-week immersion program in France, the odyssey ended with him far from his goal of fluency. C’est la vie. However, the failure had an unexpected silver lining. “In the end, though, it turns out that spending a year not learning French may have been the best thing I could’ve done for my 57-year-old brain,” Alexander wrote in a New York Times editorial. The results of cognitive tests taken both before and after a year learning a language shocked him. His scores had skyrocketed with his verbal memory score leaping from

the bottom half to the eighty-eighth percentile and his visual memory moving up from the bottom five percent to the fiftieth percentile. Bravo, Monsieur Alexander! How does language learning improve cognitive functioning so dramatically? In the TED Talk, The Benefits of a Bilingual Brain, Mia Nacamulli states that regardless of when you acquire additional languages, being multilingual gives your brain some remarkable advantages. “Some of these are even visible,” she said. Brain scans reveal that there’s a higher density of gray matter in bilingual individuals, specifically in the region that is involved in executive functioning like problem solving and switching between tasks. It also improves brain connectivity. Many scientists now believe that because learning a language is so complex and uses overlapping regions of the brain, it is one of the best exercises you can

do to keep it working optimally. In older learners, the cognitive benefits of mastering another language may even extend to working memory. In fact, just being bilingual offers considerable protection against dementia and Alzheimer’s according to a study published by

the University of Edinburgh. It concluded that knowing two or more languages staved off dementia, on average, four and a half years. Scientists believe that bilinguals are more resilient in dealing with neurodegeneration than monolinguals because of cognitive reserve, a concept that explains a person’s capacity to maintain normal cognitive function despite biological damage in the brain as it ages. FEATURE I’ve been taking French classes at Quebec City’s Laval University. In the virtual classrooms, which are held on platforms like Zoom and Microsoft Teams, I wrestle with tongue-twisting pronunciation and foreign grammatical structures with fellow students of all ages and nationalities. It’s a scene that could only have been imagined in science fiction a few decades earlier. Sitting at my dining room table, I attempt to speak French with my classmates who are doing the same from their homes in Canada, USA, Mexico, Brazil, and Iran among other places. And, more amazingly, we are sharing the bandwidth with millions of other learners in the world as many educational

institutions, whether local or on the other side of the world, are now offering their classes online. Local options include University of Buffalo, whose Department of Linguistics offers non-degree programing in more than fifteen languages. Upskill.org, Buffalo’s Public Schools Adult Education Division, also has a variety of courses, including Conversational Japanese, Instant Italian and Speed Spanish. Online there’s Italki.com, which has an impressive roster of both professional teachers and local tutors from around the world. Lingoda, a German-based company, offers small-group and private classes with native speakers in French, English, German, and Spanish. The program uniqueness lies in its flexibility, as students choose when and what they want to study from a wide selection of classes offered 24/7.

Learn on your own It’s a myth that you need classes to learn a language. Self-study methods can be just as effective. First, develop a system of learning new vocabulary. This can be as simple as using flashcards or a small notebook that you keep nearby to more technical methods like a software program. ANKI, for example, is a timed repetition program that repeats a word at increasingly longer intervals, so it stays fresh in your mind. Start by just adding words, and then when you’re comfortable, try complete sentences. Be sure to immerse yourself in the language, using whatever methods are enjoyable for you. Start watching TV programs in your target language, and you’ll begin to absorb its sounds and rhythms. (Netflix has a slew of series in foreign tongues to choose from). TED Talks are short, informative videos on a wide variety of subjects,

and they are available in dozens of languages. Songs are another fun option. I once met a young woman in Hungary who claimed to have learned her fluent English entirely through rock music. She said it worked very well except for the time she asked someone for a light by saying, “C’mon baby, light my fire.” Whatever method you decide on, the most important thing to remember is to enjoy the process itself. As Alexander discovered when he dedicated himself to learning French for a year, acquiring a language is not particularly easy. Mary Bonner Surviving and thriving after COVID-19 BY ASHLEY ZIOMEK

fter a life-threatening experience with COVID-19, Western New Yorker Mary Bonner is on the mend and spreading a message of hope for the new year.

On March 23, 2020, Bonner believed she was coming down with a cold. She stayed home for five hours believing her symptoms could be self-remedied, until she realized how serious her situation was. She was rushed to Buffalo General Hospital, where she was immediately admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, and soon after was placed on a ventilator.

While on the ventilator, Bonner’s fragile state declined further, ultimately requiring a blood transfusion. She remained reliant on assisted breathing until mid-April, when she began to regain strength and consciousness, and was finally able to breathe on her own without the ventilator. Bonner, a mother of four, and grandmother of 14, says, “My

health means everything to me, I have a reason to be healthy.” Since overcoming COVID-19, Bonner has enacted dramatic changes to her lifestyle, including healthy eating and a regular exercise schedule. She is grateful for her support system including her family, and her recent reconnection with her childhood sweetheart, Paul. “What I have to say to anyone who’s 60 plus: 'Stand up. Do something. Go volunteer,” she says. Bonner stays true to her own words by visiting women and children at homeless shelters, supporting survivors of addiction, and volunteering as a respected elder at her church. She is also an active member of Buffalo’s African American

Cultural Center (AACC), where she serves on the board. Founded in 1958, the AACC takes pride in offering “sanctuary, validation, and celebration for the duality of being African and American.” Described as a peace-maker, problem-solver, and fighter, Bonner encourages everyone to, “Stay strong, stay healthy, [and] keep your mind busy. Keep Your Brain in the Game BY CATHERINE STACK

rain health is the ability to use your brain and mind to create the life you want. It is the ability to focus, concentrate, and remember things. The good news is that research shows that we do have the ability to prevent cognitive decline and can even improve the current state of our brain. There are many external factors that contribute to cognitive decline. Poor diet, substance or alcohol abuse, obesity, recurrent concussions, and poor sleep have been shown to increase risk for dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Pre-existing conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes increase your risk for neurodegenerative diseases. I’m sure each reader has known someone close who has or had dementia or Alzheimer’s. Sadly, there is little that can be done in the later stages of these diseases, but there is so much we can do now to prevent it. Eat well A diet high in healthy fats and antioxidants has been shown to optimize brain function. Wild salmon, sardines, avocado, coconut oil, and olive oil are some of the most protective fats for the brain. Blueberries, dark leafy greens, nuts (like fatty Brazil nuts) and seeds (especially hemp seeds) are

ultra health-promoting. Spices such as turmeric have been shown to decrease plaques in the brain as well as containing other antiinflammatory properties. Pea protein packs a powerful punch when it comes to providing all nine of the essential amino acids your body cannot produce. Although most grains are considered inflammatory, gluten free whole oats provide a high concentration of gammaaminobutyric acid (GABA) that provides a sense of calm. Shake that booty Keep moving. 150 minutes of exercise per week will help keep your brain sharp. Exercise keeps the blood pumping, which can increase the size of the hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for memory, which shrinks as we age. Sleep well Sleep is the most important thing you can do to reset the brain,

allowing it to heal and to restore mental health. Seven to nine hours per night is needed. There are many excellent over the counter supplements to aid sleep. There are also many videos and meditations online to help you achieve a better night’s rest. Stimulate your senses The smell and taste of healthy cooking, the sound of beautiful music, and the feel of a pet’s fur are all uplifting sensory experiences. The more you use your senses and appreciate the sensations, the more you engage and exercise your brain. Strengthen relationships Staying connected with loved ones and friends becomes an essential part of the aging process. It protects one from a sense of isolation and possible depression. Join a book club, play cards, or just make plans to meet and break up a monotonous routine. Becoming complacent and disconnected can lead to mental decline. Keep learning There is nothing more rewarding than learning something new. Whether it be a new hobby, a new activity, or taking a class. Learning something new stimulates neurons in the brain, which forms more neural pathways and allows electrical impulses to travel faster across them. Nourish your soul Partake in activities or things that

make you feel good. I often listen to what I refer to as “soul books” while driving to work. These leave me feeling peaceful, with a new perspective, and it’s a great way to start the day.
