NETWORK IN AGING OF WESTERN NEW YORK CELEBRATES THIRTY-EIGHT YEARS BY KRISTIN SURDEJ, L.M.S.W. & LARRY RAINES, CRTS For thirty-eight years, Network in Aging of Western New York (networkinaging.org) has been the premiere local organization for professionals serving our community’s aging population. Our members come together with common goals to enhance and improve quality of life for older persons and their families. We do this by providing members with opportunities for resource exchange, professional development, and stimulation of interdisciplinary collaboration. Through collaborative alliances, Network members keep current on issues and trends relevant to today’s booming aging population. For example, educational workshops throughout the year provide members with opportunities and instructive information. Monthly networking events promote knowledge and understanding of our diverse membership. Ultimately, it’s consumers who benefit from these professionals collaborating in a collegiate and nonpartisan atmosphere. Our members are from diverse disciplines, and, through networking, know whom to reach out to when a situation demands further expertise or specialization; knowing fellow members on professional and personal levels creates confidence in referrals. The Network’s diversity creates added value for consumers, who benefit from information disseminated by members throughout the communities they serve. At the end of 2017, the Network In Aging of Western New York included 114 member agencies, organizations, and businesses at various membership levels. The diversity of membership spans senior centers, independent and assisted living communities, senior

relocation services, nursing homes, home care agencies, companion agencies, Meals on Wheels, health insurance companies, managed long term care programs, newspapers, magazines, printing companies, website design companies, banks, funeral homes, cemeteries, and companies who make it easier to receive assistive care. Other members are accountants, attorneys, care managers, financial advisors, health care providers, realtors, universities, and other nonprofit and for-profit organizations. Although Network In Aging does not function as a source for

information, referral, or endorsement, it does provide links to member websites at networkingaging.org. We are always looking to add to our ranks. LIVING WITH VISION LOSS - by James Simmons, OD, MS, Low Vision Specialist

Since 1907, Olmsted Center for Sight has provided comprehensive Vision Rehabilitation Services to individuals experiencing uncorrectable vision loss. Our team of Specialists will provide you with the tools and training to help you maximize your safety and independence within your home environment.

WHAT IS LOW VISION?

OLMSTED CENTER FOR SIGHT ABOUT • Dr. James Simmons, OD MS • Low Vision Specialist

CONTACT (716) 882-1025 Fax: (716) 402-5598 www.olmstedcenter.org LOCATIONS Main Campus Clinic 1170 Main Street Buffalo, NY 14209

Low Vision is any eye condition that cannot be corrected with standard lenses, medication or surgery. It is better defined in terms of function, in other words, low vision is “not enough vision to do whatever it is you need to do,” which can vary from person to person. Macular Degeneration is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss in people over age 60. Unlike your routine eye care provider, Dr. Simmons is specifically trained to maximize our patient’s vision through the use of high-powered lenses, magnifiers and lighting.

WHAT IS VISION REHABILITATION? Vision rehabilitation includes a wide range of professional services that can restore functioning during or after vision loss, just as physical therapy restores function after a stroke or other injury. Vision Rehabilitation allows people who are experiencing any level of vision loss to maximize their safety, independence and overall quality of life.

WHAT ARE SOME OTHER HEALTH RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH VISION LOSS? When a patient first comes to us they often report frustration in not being able to do the things they do every day; reading small print or watching television, for instance. Being unable to read prescription bottles and mismanaging medicine dosage can lead to a hospital stay or something even more serious. The inability to

use the stove or microwave safely could lead to injury or a lack of nutritional meals. Trips and falls over unseen objects can often result in serious injuries among seniors. Shying away from outings or things you always enjoyed doing can lead to social isolation and depression. You can do the things you did before vision loss; now you’re just going to do them a little differently.

If you or someone you care about is having difficulty doing daily living tasks or the things they enjoy doing due to vision loss, call us today.

James Simmons, OD,MS, earned his Doctor of Optometry from Pennsylvania College of Optometry in conjunction with his MS in Vision Rehabilitation from the Institute for the Visually Impaired in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He has practiced Low Vision Rehabilitation Optometry with Olmsted Center for Sight for over 20 years, where he is a valued team member, service provider, and educator.

AT ANY AGE: NEW YORK STATE SMOKERS’ QUITLINE AND HEALTHCARE PROVIDER CAN HELP BY TONY ASTRAN, MPA, APR

I

t’s never too late to quit smoking. Just ask Mary M., a sixty-eight-year-old West Seneca resident who smoked for nearly fifty years. Today, she’s living a smoke-free life thanks to support from her healthcare provider and the New York State Smokers’ Quitline. Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death statewide and nationwide. For senior citizens, any level of smoking is particularly detrimental to health, as smokers are more likely to develop colds and flu, cataracts and macular degeneration, memory problems, and breathing conditions like emphysema, chronic bronchitis, or asthma. But, by using a support system, along with medications and healthier behaviors, New Yorkers looking to quit smoking can achieve success like Mary. Mary started smoking at age twenty-one, and smoked for more than forty-five years; her husband was also a smoker, which made quitting difficult. Shortly after he passed away in 2015, Mary was diagnosed with chronic obstructive

pulmonary disease (COPD). “I couldn’t vacuum my house for more than two minutes without having to take a break to breathe, and I began to need to wheel around a small oxygen tank at my side,” Mary says. “I finally reached the point where smoking just wasn’t worth it anymore.” Windsong Radiology’s low-dose lung cancer screening program is a free screening program available to smokers and former smokers who meet the guidelines. The screening has the ability to identify lung cancer early, when it is most treatable. After her screening, Mary received a referral to the New York State Smokers’ Quitline. “It’s common for me to hear patients enrolled in our program say they tried ten times or more before they finally kicked the

habit for good,” says Windsong’s lung cancer screening program navigator, Tracey Supples, RT, RM, CN-BI. “It’s so hard to quit smoking, especially alone. That’s one reason why the New York State Smokers’ Quitline is so helpful in my efforts to help our patients become smokefree.” After working with a Quit Coach to develop a customized quit-plan, Mary received NRT patches and gum. She learned tips to most effectively use the products, and beat cravings. She also threw out smoking-related items around her home, got the inside of her car professionally cleaned, bought suckers and hard candy to have with her at all times, and started volunteering at a nearby nursing home as one of many new hobbies.

FOREVER YOUNG “People sit next to me at church more often,” Mary says. “It’s probably because I don’t have that ‘smoker’s smell’ anymore. Food tastes more delicious, and my breathing feels better than I can ever remember. I’m also saving so much money.” Mary credits both her healthcare provider and the New York State Smokers’ Quitline for her success. “It’s never too late to quit, but your heart has to be in it,” she says. “From there, having support is crucial. I especially thank the Quit Coaches, who were always polite and helpful, no matter what questions I asked.” Each smoker has a unique background and varying issues related to quitting, which is why Quit Coaches will work to develop personalized quit-plans. Nevertheless, some tips are universal. Here are a few, as offered by Quit Coaches at the New York State Smokers’ Quitline: • “Put a glass of water by your

bed. When you wake up, your new routine can be to start with a sip of water instead of lighting up.” – Darlene D. • “Don’t beat yourself up if you have a lapse. Figure out the reason for the lapse, and develop a plan so that you learn from the mistake when you try again.” – Rich S. • “Remember that you’ll feel the health benefits right away. Nicotine will be out of your bloodstream in seventy-two hours after you quit.” – Angie D. • “Try initially to avoid activities where you and friends would normally smoke, until you feel comfortable enough being around other smokers.” – Caitlin H. “Always remember why you decided you quit.” – Kathy W. The New York State Smokers’ Quitline is available as a free resource for all New Yorkers. Quit Coaches can provide personalized

support and check eligibility for a starter kit of nicotine replacement therapy. In addition, New York State Smokers’ Quitline recommends smokers talk to their healthcare providers about prescriptions for stop-smoking medications, most of which are covered by health insurance plans. Smokers should call the New York State Smokers’ Quitline at 866-NYQUITS (866-697-8487) anytime the journey gets tough. Quit Coaches are available seven days a week beginning at 9a.m., and additional resources are available online at nysmokefree.com. The New York State Smokers’ Quitline is a service of the New York State Department of Health and based at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo. A DOCTOR’S TIPS TO STAY HEALTHY WHILE TRAVELING T

ravel can sometimes feel more daunting than relaxing, between flight delays and bumperto-bumper traffic. What’s more, it has potential health impacts, including leg swelling and increased risk for cold and flu.

Fend off Fatigue

“Air travel, long drives, less sleep, and added stress can weaken your immune system at a time when you’re around more people and susceptible to illness,” says nationally renowned natural health physician and bestselling author, Dr. Fred Pescatore. Dr. Pescatore is sharing a few tips to help boost health while traveling.

Feed Your Immune System Being around so many people in tight spaces means you may be more at risk of catching a bug. “Take precautions before boarding your flight — wash your hands frequently, bring hand sanitizer with you and snack on antioxidant-packed vegetables like broccoli, carrots, and sweet potatoes to keep your immune system strong,” says Dr. Pescatore.

The American Sleep Association estimates that nearly 93 percent of travelers experience jet lag, and it can be severe enough to interfere with vacation plans. “Sleep disturbances make you feel tired, nauseous and irritable — not a good combination with a packed travel itinerary,” says Dr. Pescatore. A peer-reviewed study shows that daily supplementation with the super-antioxidant, Pycnogenol (Picnoj-en-all), reduces jet lag symptoms by nearly 50 percent. “Pycnogenol, a natural botanical extract from the bark of the French maritime pine tree, is a traveler’s best friend. You can spend less time feeling fatigued and more quality time enjoying your destination,” says Dr. Pescatore.

Boost Circulation Long periods of immobility in a cramped space like a car or plane contribute to swelling and fluid accumulation throughout the legs. Known as edema, it can be uncomfortable and may feel worse after travel. Dr. Pescatore recommends taking shorts breaks to move around on road trips and to stand up and stretch during long flights to keep blood circulating and reduce

swelling. “Pycnogenol is also shown to promote circulation and studies show its benefits for reducing swelling and discomfort during longdistance travel. Again, it’s a good supplement for travel,” he says. Pycnogenol is one of the most researched ingredients on the market with decades of studies showing its benefits for a variety of health applications. It’s available in more than 700 dietary supplements, multi-vitamins and health products worldwide. For more information, visit pycnogenol.com. “Drink plenty of water, use a supplement for a beneficial boost and remember to enjoy yourself. Yes, even the travel to and from your destination can be fun,” says Dr. Pescatore. On your next vacation, ensure better health by taking simple steps. FY

ake up, sleepy people: help is on the way. Help in getting a good night’s sleep and maximizing those precious restorative hours, that is. Meet Soda Kuczkowski, sleep health educator and diagnostic sleep consultant. The Buffalo native, a self-described sleep enthusiast, is the founder of Start With Sleep, a retail boutique and education center located at 1211 Hertel Avenue. In the airy, zenlike space, lovingly restored to the tin-ceiling elegance of another era by her husband and business partner, Kuczkowski conducts workshops for adults and “slumber parties” for pajamaclad youngsters, all of whom learn better sleep habits. Her background includes nearly a dozen years educating and supporting physician offices, community organizations, hospitals, and schools. As the mother of a three-year-old daughter, she knows a thing or two about sleep deprivation. “No! You need a nap,” is the firm message on one side of her business card. Her mission these days is to spread the word about the benefits of a solid night’s

sleep, the foundation of overall health. “People want to be younger, smarter, faster—everyone wants a quick fix,” she says. Nothing works faster than a good night’s sleep; I’ve always felt that. And now I know the science supports that.” She works with physicians in counseling patients who have diagnosed sleep disorders, and her shop stocks the latest devices to treat those with serious issues. Put an aloe vera plant on your nightstand. It emits oxygen at night, improving overall sleep. Warm milk? Maybe—if you can tolerate lactose; calcium helps soothe the mind before bed. Get a new pillow, if it's more than a couple years old. They lose elasticity and support over time.

Try tea with the herb valerian, shown to improve sleep in some studies. Eat foods like leafy greens, high in magnesium, which can help you fall asleep faster. Keep a journal, encouraging creativity and problemsolving—aids to better sleep.

SALT CAVES EXPLOIT THE MINERAL’S THERAPEUTIC PROPERTIES IN A SPA-LIKE SETTING BY NAOMI SAKOVICS

alt, a mineral that’s been around since time immemorial, is not only a ubiquitous food seasoning; it’s also— purportedly—a healing agent. Salt caves exploit the mineral’s opened at 5020 Armor Duells Road it can help with skin problems, such as therapeutic properties, allowing in Orchard Park in the Southtowns, acne or psoriasis, and even migraines. people to relax and rejuvenate in a spaand there's been one operating in “Something as simple as salt can like environment. These manufactured Ellicotville for some time. help people in so many ways,” says caves are popping up around the Aura co-owners Tadgi and Kelly Tadgi, who notes that its four main United States in greater numbers, with DeBerg say that visiting the salt properties are antibacterial, antifungal, around 400 or so in the US alone. cave can help alleviate asthma, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory. Erie County’s first salt cave, Aura chest tightness, sinus problems, Exactly what is a salt cave? It’s an Salt Cave and Wellness, opened last colds, and the flu. Salt, they say, is a environment created to look like a year at 6429 Transit Road in East natural immune booster and can help cave, complete with stalactites, cool Amherst. A few months later, one increase lung capacity. They also say temperatures, and trickling water.

ARTICLES 17

FOREVER YOUNG Visitors sit for varying periods of time while breathing in salt particles that have been pumped into the air. For the Aura cave, 20,000 pounds of pink salt were brought in from Poland. Although halotherapy—the inhalation of air infused with salt— is catching on in the US, it’s been a well-established practice in Europe for some time. Treatments there are even covered by insurance, notes Tadji. The use of salt for therapy began in Poland. During the mid-1800s, Polish doctor Feliks Boczkowski noticed that men working in the salt mines were dramatically healthier than those working in the coal mines. The respiratory disorders plaguing the coal miners were nonexistent in the salt miners. After years of research, he concluded that the difference was not in the men but the environment. The miners were healthy due to years of chipping away at the salt, during which time they were breathing it into their bodies. Boczkowski would go on to open the first salt therapy resort, where people could come and take salt baths. Although science conclusively proving salt’s health benefits is scant, the testimonials from people who claim it’s helped them are many. Take Williamsville resident John Theal, seventy-one, for example. The former smoker grapples with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It severely limits his lung function. When the salt cave in East Amherst opened, he was skeptical, but decided to try it. What did he have to lose? He started going three times per week, before heading to the gym. “I could actually get on the treadmill and do a forty-minute walk at a brisk pace, and I could do that without any problems breathing,” he says, adding, “I can take deep breaths now. I couldn’t do that before.” For more information on Aura, visit aurasaltcave.com. FY Naomi Sakovics is a freelance writer, Buffalo lover, food enthusiast and unabashed book nerd.

TOGETHER, WE VENTURE INTO THE CAVE. THE GROUND CRUNCHES. I don’t know what to expect heading into the salt cave at Aura Salt Caves and Wellness, but I keep thinking about all the characters in Jane Austen novels who go to the seaside for the healthy air and water. Maybe they knew something we’re just rediscovering now? Accompanying me is my brother, John, who, when I told him I was going to visit a salt cave that afternoon, said, “I’m coming with you.” As the owner of a salt lamp, he was intrigued. Salt carpets the ground about three to four inches thick. We leave our shoes behind, our feet now clad in cloth booties. The lights are dim, but I make out ten chairs arranged in a semi-circle, each with a soft blanket draped over the back. We settle into the antigravity chairs, pushing the bottom with our feet so that we’re resting at a comfortable angle. Tadji DeBerg, co-owner, comes in and explains that we’re to relax in an electronics-free environment, and she’ll return in forty-five minutes to let us know the session is complete. It’s cool inside, around sixty to sixty-five degrees, and the sound of water trickling over branches and dripping onto rocks mingles with soothing music. Although it’s dim, interspersed salt lamps bathe the room in a warm hue. Above, twinkling blue lights mimic stars shining through a cave. Branches poke through the ceiling in twisted shapes, and scattered around are trunks of white birch trees. Salt drips down in stalactites and gathers in corners in the 330-squarefoot space. I close my eyes. A few minutes later, the machine dispersing salt into the air begins, and soon I can feel it on my skin. I slip into a restful state, cool, relaxed and only thinking about the deep breaths I’m intentionally taking. When we leave, I ask my brother if he feels better. He says he does, and I do, too. Although I had no ailments going in, coming out I feel what I can only describe as a clean sensation in my lungs and a wonderful calm around my entire body.

Better sleep = BY MARIA SCRIVAN

By Joseph Doherty

When I spoke with four of Western New York’s 2017 award-winning brewers, the bumper sticker idiom “Do what you love and love what you do” stubbornly lodged in my mind. Yes, these brewers love beer. And yes, they love brewing it. Not surprisingly then, this group—professionals who exude a deep knowledge and passion for their craft— sit at the top of the class. TAP New York Awards 2017 Gold Medal Winner Governors’ Brewers’ Cup for Best Craft Beer in New York State Community Beer Works, The Whale Brown Ale President, Ethan Cox Coffee, chocolate, caramel, and roast—these are the most prominent flavor notes of Community Beer Works’ The Whale Brown Ale. Instead of heavy hops, “you get a smooth, malty, fulsome, and delicious 5.8% ABV all-season ale that pairs well with a wide range of foods, but also drinks great on its own,” says president Ethan Cox. The Whale’s recipe has evolved from original head brewer Rudy Watkins’ recipe, but remains grounded in the “simple joy of creating a great expression of the Thomas Fawcett Brown Malt, which contributes the bulk of the flavor.” It’s rounded out with other malts, a dash of hops, and a fairly neutral ale yeast. “We like to think we make the best beer in Buffalo, but that’s not to say we don’t think others are also making great beer! For the most part, our small scale is something of a liability, but when it comes to two things—freshness and variety—it does have advantages. Ultimately, we’re very much a brewer’s brewery, and I think it shows in the beer.”

Ted’s has been firing up the grill for its charcoal-broiled hot dogs since 1927, so they know a thing or two about quality dogs. In 1913, Greek immigrant Theodore Spiro Liaros, or “Ted” as he came to be known, landed in Western New York with little money and no English. He started with a horse-drawn hot dog cart before buying a Massachusetts Avenue shed in 1927. Today, Ted’s has locations all over WNY, and even Arizona, so a great smoky hot dog is never far away.

After a highly anticipated opening, followed by crowds settling down to a manageable size, it seems as NYBP has finally found its comfort zone and is hitting its stride. Hefty burgers made from premium ground sirloin have an intense beef flavor that results from the quality grind and the hearty crust laid down by the grill. Built into one of six configurations listed on the menu, they are well balanced compositions, with Instagramworthy presentation.

Come hungry. Be prepared to wait for a seat. Ask for extra napkins before the burgers hit your table. These are the cardinal rules of an Allen Burger Venture adventure. Here the menu features a wide range of creative burgers, each made of grassfed Angus beef. Lamb, sausage, and chickpea burgers are available as well, so there’s something for everyone. Its killer beer selection and housemade tater tots don’t hurt it either. (You’ll thank us for the extra napkin tip first bite in.)

All of its dogs are preservative, nitrate, and artificial ingredient free, and that commitment to quality shows on the plate. Spree named Frank the best hot dogs in the city last year, and we still can’t top their perfectly done links, creative toppings, and addictive fries. With pork and beef blend, all-beef, and vegetarian dogs topped with everything from chili to guacamole and fried jalapeños to blueberry BBQ sauce and fried onions, there’s something for everyone at Frank.

The Frank Mi & hand-cut fries and dipping sauces from Frank Gourmet Hot Dogs, winner of BEST Hot Dog (City) + BEST French Fries (City)

lettuce, onion, and special sauce on a bun can be. The patty is a blend of brisket, chuck, short rib, and bone marrow, ground in-house and always cooked perfectly to the requested temperature. The bun competes with the patty to be the star of the show. M+R makes its own rolls—rich, buttery, pillowy things (topped with sesame seeds, of course).

Best French Fries (Northtowns)

Great fries require great commitment. Considering the miniature kitchen tucked behind the bar and the limited menu offerings, Moor Pat is 100 percent devoted to its fries. Hand cut, soaked, dried, low temp blanched, chilled, and rested before flash frying á là minute, they are golden, hefty, and satisfying. Truffle Parmesan is available for those who need to adulterate their purity. And you won’t miss the ketchup when you opt for house made blue cheese sauce or chipotle mayo for dipping.

S T E V E ’ S P I G A N D OX 951 Ridge Rd., Lackawanna; 824-8601 or facebook.com/StevesPig-Ox-Roast

Steve’s Pig & Ox Roast is best known for its beef on ’weck, but its fries have our attention. Handcut curly fries have a special place in our hearts, and a bountiful pile of Steve’s twirly, crisp potatoes are the perfect accompaniment to any of its classic sandwiches.

Built in the 1950s by architect and prior owner Alvin J. Oberst, the 1,900-square-foot Williamsville home is the epitome of midcentury design with sleek, clean lines. In the center of the main living space sits a fireplace, open on three sides, which divides the room into spaces for living and dining.

You may be tempted to go on about the mayo-based dipping sauces that come with the fries. There's a choice of three that vary from day to day, like the creamy Sriracha-laced variety, the spicy and catsupy "Cane," and the salt and vinegar concoction, which is serioulsy killer. But, focus! The fries that Frank serves are magical. Through some super secret deep frying transmogrification, potatoes are rendered into the perfect golden dream of themselves. Ultra crisp on the outside and tender and light inside. How? And don't go with that friend who always says, "Do you want to split an order of fries?" You do not. You want them all to yourself.
