A ROUND-UP OF LOCAL PUBLICATIONS
Area authors celebrate Buffalo, baseball, broadcasting, and math By Elizabeth Licata
W E S T E R N N E W Y O R K A U T H O R S were busy this year, despite the lack of big inperson book signings such as those that usually take place at the History Museum and the downtown library. Here are five titles worth searching out. Two of them look back at key local histories, two survey the Buffalo of 2020, and the final title makes the case that there is joy in math.
Empty City Empty Streets: Buffalo, NY During Shutdown
By Joe George blurb.com/user/JoeGeorge29
In his introduction to this collection of fifty photographs, Joe George says, “The first weeks of the shutdown were nothing short of stunning and I mean this literally; we were stunned by
the reality of it. But also stunning in a beautiful way.” It’s nothing new for George to share his appreciation for the undeniable beauty of Buffalo. The longtime chef/writer/ photographer has been shooting and posting his visions of Western New York’s urban core for years; this is his second compilation. In some ways, last spring’s unpopulated downtown streets were a gift for George and his camera; the photographer loves to catch serendipitous combinations of architecture, light, and atmosphere, which aren’t helped by human distractions. Many of his best shots happen on rainy nights, with streetlights and buildings glimmering from above and below. George is a modest man, but he also wants others to see what he sees. In other series, he has presented portraits of people he meets on the streets, many homeless, and he always includes their stories. This book is filled with different stories, as well as the enduring affection George has for these streets he knows so well.

About Mathematics
By Gerald R. Rising, James Matthews, Eileen Schoaff, and Judith Matthews A recent cartoon depicts two kids hiding from a 2020-version ice cream truck that offers liver and onions instead. Many might feel that’s a fitting analogy for giving a math book as a holiday gift. But coauthor Gerry Rising promises us that this is “a text for non-mathematicians that makes serious mathematics—including fractals, calculus, probability, and nonEuclidean geometry—accessible, useful, and even entertaining. Rising is quite right that serious math, the underpinnings of so much that makes civilization possible, should be viewed with a less jaundiced eye. Immediately, the authors set out to make their case with a series of pithy quotes, including this from C.P. Snow:
Buffalo’s Back: An Anthology for Our Times
Edited by Maria Scrivani Benefit for Canopy of Neighbors, available at Talking Leaves The concept for this book—a round-up of writings from Western New Yorkers on a compelling topic—is similar to Right, Here, Right Now: The Buffalo Anthology, which came out in 2016. Then, contributors wrote essays about Buffalo’s realities and aspirations. Buffalo’s Back has a similar focus, but the context is 2020, the realities are surreal, and it includes poetry and fiction. Michael Morgulis’s cover drawing of a buffalo with a mask dangling from one tusk should give readers an idea of what to expect. Words like COVID, pandemic, desolation, and epicenter leap forth from a brief skim. A longer look finds love, tulips, Ted’s, and giggles. A full range of experiences— from quarantine-fueled fights to park rambles to front-line exhaustion—is provided by the writers, who include Tom Fontana, Justin Karcher, Sherry Robbins, and Gary Earl Ross, among many others. The addition of poetry is welcome, a subtle leavening that balances informing the mind with transporting the imagination. This portrait of Buffalo at a certain time will be interesting to look back on ten years from now.

After nailing down the essential nature of math literacy, the authors proceed to find fun ways to explain mathematical concepts, often using activities and elements familiar from everyday life and pop culture. Examples include the creation of optical illusions and images with numbers, the way mathematical calculations are based on order and disorder, and how algorithms are just like recipes. Though the book is technically intended for the introductory college level, it’s perfect for anyone who is tired of being intimidated by math.
100 Years of Buffalo Broadcasting Volume One: 1920–1970
By Steve Cichon Buffalostories.com
From Buffalo’s presence at the birth of commercial radio to Jeff Kaye’s reboot of “the War of the Worlds,” a longtime historian of Buffalo, Steve Cichon, has exhaustively chronicled local television and radio in Western New York. This thick, but easy-to-scan chronology covers the area’s greatest years of locallyproduced journalism and entertainment, including the development of dominant outlets WBEN/WGR, how the Irv/Rick/Tom trio came into being, and Buffalo’s favorite polka and bowling shows. Author Cichon has worked in Buffalo radio, television, and print for twenty-five years. His voice is familiar to many, and his years of bonding with his father over John Beard and Irv Weinsten, as well as his careerlong dedication to telling stories that have meaning and power, have served him well.

A good many times I have been present at gatherings of people who, by the standards of the traditional culture, are thought highly educated and who have with considerable gusto been expressing their incredulity at the illiteracy of scientists. Once or twice I have been provoked and have asked the company how many of them could describe the Second Law of Thermodynamics. The response was cold: it was also negative. Yet I was asking something which is the scientific equivalent of: Have you read a work of Shakespeare’s?

The Seasons of Buffalo Baseball, 1857–2020
James H. Overfield, editor Michael J. Billoni, project manager/assistant editor Brian M. Frank, assistant editor John Boutet, foreword This update/revision of the late Joseph M. Overfield’s The 100 Seasons of Buffalo Baseball continues Overfield’s history of the Buffalo Bisons where it left off, in 1985, and brings it up to the present. Joseph Overfield was a founding member of the Society for American Baseball Research and wrote for The Sporting News, Baseball Digest and the original Baseball Encyclopedia. His son, Jim, is a history
professor emeritus at the University of Vermont who, after retiring in 2006, decided to update his father’s book. The other collaborators include Brian Frank, who runs the website HerdChronicles.com, Mike Billoni, former Bisons general manager; and John Boutet, archivist and curator for the Bisons. Clearly, this book is driven by passion for the team and comprehensive knowledge of its history. It starts out with two essays paying tribute to Joe Overfield and continues with the Bisons’ prehistory (1857–1876); through the decades that followed, including such milestones as the construction of Pilot Field, its successive affiliations with major league franchises, the push for major league status, and more. After the chronological portion of the book, interesting chapters take up notable personalities, mascots, vendors, Buffalo’s place in baseball history, and much more. The book becomes available November 22; visit bisons.com to order a copy.

Windcliff: A Story of People, Plants, and Gardens
PHOTO BY CLAIRE TAKACS; COURTESY OF TIMBER PRESS
By Daniel J. Hinkley Timber, 2020
One of the giants of the gardening world provides us with a beautifully photographed history of the twenty years he has spent developing his current garden, Windcliff. Daniel Hinkley is well known in horticultural circles as a plant hunter who has traveled throughout Nepal, Vietnam, South Africa, and the interior provinces of China, gathering seeds of new varieties he offered from his nursery and garden in Washington state, Heronswood, founded in 1987. Ultimately, Heronswood’s plant collection numbered more than 7,000 and its erudite catalogs, loaded with exotic varieties and filled with inspirational prose, are now collectors’ items. When Hinkley sold Heronswood in 2000 to seed giant Burpee, hearts sank throughout the gardening world. Sure enough, Burpee was unable to make Heronswood work, and eventually sold it to a local Indian tribe. In the meantime, Hinkley moved on, choosing Windcliff, a property with spectacular views of Puget Sound and Mount Ranier. This book is the story of how Hinkley made a new garden at Windcliff, with many dips into Heronswood and plant-collecting along the way.

HOLIDAY SHOPPING GUIDE 2020 Giant swallowtail butterflies
The photographs by Claire Takacs would be reason enough to buy this memoir, even for those who’ve never heard of Hinkley, but there is much more to enjoy. As Adrian Higgins notes in his review: “There was no way that Windcliff was going to be anything other than what it became: a personal paradise informed by his plant-hunting, his exploits at Heronswood, his entire gardening life.” Uprooted: A gardener reflects on beginning again
By Page Dickey Timber, 2020
In a similar story of moving to a new home and garden, another well-known figure in the gardening world, Page Dickey, describes moving from Duck Hill, a quirky old
farmhouse in Westchester County, New York, to Church House, a quirky former Methodist meeting house in Falls Village, Connecticut. Duck Hill, a well-known showplace, has been featured in the New York Times, Vogue, and Elle Décor, and Dickey, a widely published garden writer and popular lecturer, is equally wellregarded. She and her husband made the decision to move partially for financial reasons, and also out of the need to spend less time and effort on garden upkeep. Oddly, her new property, Church House, is many acres larger than Duck Hill. The story of how Dickey came to grips with her new surroundings and the strategies she used to make a larger garden less work are revealed in this highly personal, compelling narrative. Anyone who has ever had to move—gardener or non—will appreciate this book.

Garden Secrets of Bunny Mellon
By Linda Jane Holden, Thomas Lloyd, and Bryan Huffman Gibbs Smith, 2020 Bunny Mellon (1910–21014) is vaguely known for a few things. She was an heiress, socialite and wife of one of the richest men in America, Paul Mellon. She was also a talented designer and gardener. Mellon redesigned the White House Rose Garden for the Kennedys in 1961 and oversaw the restoration of the potager du Roi at Versailles. In spite of these highprofile credentials, Mellon’s primary garden design principle was “nothing should be noticed.” In this book, White House historian Linda Jane Holden leads a team of researchers/writers who have
delved into Mellon’s personal journal and photographs to uncover her gardening philosophies. After a biographical chapter about Mellon, the book focuses on the properties Mellon helped transform, many her own, including Oak Spring, in Virginia; a townhouse in Manhattan; and houses in Nantucket and Cape Cod. While Mellon’s social circles were elevated, her advice to fellow gardeners, provided in chapters entitled “Bunny’s Garden Standards”, “The Importance of Trees”, and “Flowers and Edibles”, is down-to-earth. There is much for the average gardener to learn here. Mellon’s garden at Oak Spring is maintained by the Oak Spring Garden Foundation (OSGF), which has a mission to “facilitate scholarship and public dialogue on the history and future of plants and horticulture.” Learn more about it at osgf.org.

Highlights from this year’s crop of cookbooks and culinary guides

by Wendy Guild Swearingen
HOME COOKS, this is your year, and winter is your season. Thanks to revived interest in baking, preserving, slow-cooking techniques, and other old-school strategies, kitchens have become the new safe places. Here are several recent titles that will keep things interesting on the culinary front.
The New Homemade Kitchen: 250 Recipes and Ideas for Reinventing the Art of Preserving, Canning, Fermentation; Dehydrating; and More
By Joseph Shuldiner Photos by Ren Fuller Hatchette Book Group, 2020
If there’s ever a perfect time to dabble in the arts of canning and fermenting, it is now. Coming from the Harry Potter-sounding Institute of
Domestic Technology, this hefty tome is loaded with gorgeous photos and clearly devised instructions and recipes on how to make our good food last. The LA-based school’s Offerings from the Department of Spirits are not Dementor repellants, but rather recipes for bar vitals like vermouth, tonic syrup, and Luxardo cherries made from fresh, natural ingredients, as well as cocktails. The Institute’s faculty created these 250 recipes that give homecooks the confidence to preserve food and drink without the fear of getting blown up or contracting botulism. Organized into Departments that include Pantry, Caffeine, Pickles & Preserves, Grains, Dairy, Meat & Fish, Spirits, Fermentation, and Dehydration, this book of preservation is sure conjure some ideas for dinner and drinks, and then some.

Very Merry Cocktails: 50+ Festive Drinks for the Holiday Season
By Jessica Strand photos by Ren Fuller Chronicle Books, 2020
The first thing you’ll notice about this trim cocktail guide is its appealing mid-century vibe. Photographer Ren Fuller, who shot another book in this list, captures the essence of Christmases long, long ago— well, forty-five years anyway. Super saturated, Lomoesque images of drinks like “Santa Baby” (Chambord,
champagne, pomegranate seeds) and “White Christmas” (vodka, amaretto, heavy whipping cream, nutmeg) shimmer in vintage barware and vessels and are staged in what looks like the most swinging rec-room holiday party ever. Food writer and author of several cookbooks, Strand curates a collection of libations both inventive and attractive. She helpfully includes a list of bar equipment, ingredients, garnishes, and syrup recipes. It ends with a list of seven festive booze-free libations; one for every day of the week. With one of these swank drinks in hand, it really is the most wonderful time of the year.

Pantry to Plate: Kitchen Staples for Simple and Easy Cooking
By Emily Stephenson illustration by Sein Koo Chronicle Books, 2020
We’ve spent the past eight months cooking for ourselves and our families and, let’s face it, it doesn’t look like that’s going to change any time soon. Might as well stock up. Fortuitously, we found this primer on kitchen staples that is way more than flour, pasta, oil, and canned goods. Kimchi makes the list, as do polenta and coconut milk. Here you’ll find fifty staples for your cupboard, refrigerator, and freezer, along with seventy recipes that use the aforementioned
ingredients. This is an ongoing process, and tips on how to get started and keep it up—and how store all that stuff—are useful and appreciated. The chapters reflect the way actual humans live starting with egg recipes for every meal, then moving on to easy and delish soups, carbs, beans, veggies, protein-forward meals, and sides that can also serve as meal with a couple of tweaks. We love how you can limit your staples while still expanding your repertoire. Eat well this pandemic; after all, you’re not living in a bunker!

Big Love Cooking
By Joey Campanaro with Theresa Gambacorta Photos by Con Poulos Chronicle Books, 2020 As the title implies, the seventy-five recipes in this book are made to be shared around a communal table with the people you love. The author grew up in South Philadelphia in a big Italian American family, and the generous recipes are perfect for hearty platters served family style. Companaro is chef and co-owner of Little Owl, Market Table, and The Clam restaurants in New York City. His approach to cooking borrows heavily from his Italian grandmother, with skills honed in some of the best kitchens in America. Pantry staples and kitchen essentials are included—they’re brief lists and probably stuff you already have. Helpful pick-and-choose sections include brunch, soups and salads, vegetables, pastas, meat and poultry, fish and seafood, Sunday supper, and desserts. Maybe even more warming than these dishes are the photos, notes, and essays from the creators, which are in equal parts nostalgic, enlightening, and instructive. This cookbook is a joy to read and work from. The Flavor Equation: The Science of Great Cooking Explained
By Nick Sharma Chronicle Books, 2020
Why are some foods and meals delicious, and how can you eke every molecule of flavor out of our own dishes? Bombay born chef Nik Sharma decodes how to coax the most from your ingredients to create the best-tasting dishes possible. This is not a super dense lesson on food chemistry, rather, a thoughtful and careful deep dive into the elements of a dish and how they engage the senses: aroma, taste, mouthfeel, sight, and even sound (what is a snap pea with no snap?). Sharma covers these basics in the first part of the book, with descriptions and experiments accompanied by clear illustrations. Then follows the parts of taste defined, how each works, and where to find them: brightness (tartness, acidity—think lemon, tamarind, tomato); bitterness (astringency—red wine, quinine, cocoa, cranberries); saltiness (salt, obviously, but also olives and pancetta); sweet (sugars, fruits, honey, syrups); savoriness (also called umami; evident in miso, yeast, and mushrooms); fieriness (chilis, mustard, ginger); and richness (fats, oils, cheese, and nuts). Each part is defined and explained with several recipes that highlight that element. A helpful section of pantry essentials rounds out this beautifully photographed and useful book.

Half the Sugar, All the Love: 100 Easy, Low-Sugar Recipes for Every Meal of the Day
PHOTO BY ERIN SCOTT; COURTESY OF WORKMAN PUBLISHING
By Jennifer Tyler Lee and Anisha Patel, MD, MSPH Photographs by Erin Scott
You’d be amazed how often and to what extent sugar in all its forms sneaks into everyday meals. Soups, dressings, and barbecue seem like unlikely sugar bombs, but upon checking the ingredients, nearly half the calories can come from added sugars. Why is reducing sugar important? Intake of added sugar is associated with cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels, fatty liver disease, and inflammation. Lee and Patel have crafted less sugary versions of scores of favorite recipes from smoothies and hot chocolate to poke bowls and Chinese lettuce wraps without sacrificing the flavor. And, don’t worry sweet tooths, there’s plenty of recipes for you in the comprehensive dessert section, including caramel coffee frappes, double chocolate brownies, and red velvet cupcakes. Sweet.

The Bear and the Moon
By Matthew Burgess Illustrated by Catia Chien Chronicle Books, 2020 Have you ever seen such an expressive bear? He delights in finding the floating red orb, as do readers as they are taken along on the journey through the bear’s day as he shares it with the red balloon on the silver string—getting honey from the tree, catching dinner in the creek, and sitting beside the waterfall. Chien’s illustrations are wonderfully atmospheric with muted colors as a backdrop for the red balloon and the ursine protagonist. Kids ages three through five will be able to relate as the inevitable happens—pop!—and the bear feels sad and bad. It all works out in the end, though, as the moon rises with some comforting words.

Nature Play Workshop for Families: A Guide to 40+ Outdoor Learning Experiences in All Seasons
This book checks all the boxes: getting outside, less screen time, exploring nature, experiential learning, and family bonding. The focus is on close observation of the natural world, with lots of activities, crafts, art projects, and opportunities to journal. Beautiful and colorful photos accompany kid-friendly text (both the authors are educators). Activities include identifying animal tracks, crafting butterfly capes, and even cooking with foraged ingredients. The book is organized into seasons with each having “Nature Play” activities accompanied by “Make it Wild” craft instructions, “Keep it Wild” descriptions of how the natural elements behave, and “Extending the Experience,” often bringing elements inside to incorporate into project and cement learning. These workshops will help spark curiosity in every season and help kids to become lifelong learners and lovers of nature.

The Unplugged Family Activity Book: 60+ Simple Crafts & Recipes for Year-Round Fun
PHOTO BY RACHEL JEPSON WOLF; COURTESY QUARTO PUBLISHING
By Rachel Jepson Wolf Quarto Publishing, 2020
Much like Nature Play, this activity book emphasizes getting unplugged. This year has been tough for kids and teens who have gotten much of their education, social interaction, and entertainment via screens of one sort or another. Also organized by season, Unplugged lists many ways to celebrate each turn in nature’s wheel with suggestions for homemade treats and crafts for seasonal rhythms; there’s something to eat, make, and do all year. Autumn calls for bonfire bread and lantern walks, for instance, while summer is all about flowers—from lilac syrup to strung floral bunting. For parents, this book offers a wonderful opportunity to reintroduce unscheduled time, something that’s been lacking in many kids’ lives for years.

The Constitution Decoded: A Guide to the Document that Shapes Our Nation
By Katie Kennedy Illustrated by Ben Kirchner Workman Publishing, 2020
This may be a book for kids (grades 5-8), but, honestly, it’s a handy and easy-to-read reference for folks of any age who want to learn more about the United States’ founding document. The original text of the Constitution is on the left side, with a modern-day “translation” of what it means on the right, along with “Constitution in Action” callouts that exemplify how the document is implemented in real life. For example, Section 3 lays out how new states may be formed, and the action described is how West Virginia was created when Virginia wanted to secede from the Union and the western part of the state wanted to remain. Vocabulary words are bolded in the original text, with definitions below. Here’s a great intro for any civic-minded kid—and the adults in their life. How to Write a Story
By Kate Messner Illustrated by Mark Siegel Chronicle Books, 2020 Writing can be a daunting proposition for little kids. This read aloud/learn to read book offers simple instructions and gentle prompts to get kids K-3 to identify what to write about and grow their idea, choose a setting, and come up with a main character to take action. Illustrations reflect what’s going on in the thoughts of the writer, with fun and wildly different scenarios playing out—a sea monster hatches at the local aquarium, what to do? Brainstorming is discussed, as well as first drafts, the importance of lots of details to bring a story to life, and editing to get the best finished product. Then, share that marvelous story with a friend, or maybe lots of friends. This would be a great gift for teachers or kids who love to read and may struggle with writing.

ILLUSTRATION BY SOPHIE BLACKHALL; COURTESY OF CHRONICLE BOOKS
Written in the form of a letter to an alien who may be visiting Earth, this gorgeous K-3 book describes our planet and its inhabitants in thoughtful and insightful ways. Two-time Caldecott winner Blackall has met thousands of children all around the world in her support of UNICEF and Save the Children, and her illustrations reflect the diversity of cultures, environments, and biology across our big blue marble. Look closely at the detailed art, you’ll find something new each time you read the book (be sure to read all the names of paint colors!). This is not just a love letter to our planet, some difficult subjects are touched upon, such as human displacement due to climate change and war, navigating disabilities, and the origins of existence, “We don’t know where we were before we were born or where we go when we die.” If You Come to Earth is beautiful in both its presentation and message.
