ow that sunny weather has finally hit, build season in Western New York is in full swing. What’ll it be? A family room addition? A new energy system? Roof repairs? As you seek to realize your winter home improvement dreams, consider greener methods that could save you money. With large- and small-scale projects, use natural light and energy sources to your advantage—it’s both cost effective and environmentally conscious. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Green Power Network, “clean energy technologies like wind and solar power produce energy without burning fossil fuels,” which means

smaller utility bills. Sunlight can be converted into electricity; solar thermal technology can be used to heat your home’s water supply, swimming pool, or pond; and “passive solar heating” is as simple as opening the shades to let sunlight warm your house’s interior. Think new, energyefficient windows and skylights. Though we usually worry about keeping warm in the Queen City, our summers can sometimes be scorchers. That sun is great for heating water and homes, but we need wind and shade to keep us cool; talk to your builder about the window styles and placement that will best let in the breeze; this will cut down on air conditioning and fan use, which can hike utility bills through the warmer months. Aside from keeping us cool, wind can generate electricity for your home with a small backyard turbine (they look like cute little Dutch windmills). According to the EPA, wind www.buffalospree.com

PHYSICAL REHAB:

after injury, a smooth road to recovery by Terri Parsell Hilmey

“Write injuries in dust, benefits in marble.”-Benjamin Franklin

C

oming back from physical trauma is difficult, both emotionally and physically. Post-injury and both preand post-surgery, the choices you make about doctors, surgeons, rehabilitation, assistance, and your ultimate goals can all affect your outcome. Recovery is hard work, and enlisting a team of trusted medical professionals will go a long way toward allowing you to focus your energies on the mental and physical stamina needed for the hard work ahead. The only difference between recovery from an injury and recovery from a planned surgery is the amount of time you have to make your decisions. A sudden injury often means quick decisions, which should always include seeking immediate medical attention for assessment and recommendations; never assume everything is “fine” until a

76

doctor tells you so. If you’re planning a procedure, such as joint replacement or rotator cuff surgery, consult with your primary care physician to get recommendations for orthopedic surgeons, and then check them out. Ask friends and family to share experiences, read Internet reviews, visit the doctors’ websites; look for areas of expertise, and a long-term career. If you’ve been injured on the job, or in an accident, look for doctors who specialize in no-fault and Workers’ Compensation surgery; their staff will be better equipped to help you down the complicated road of insurance and compensation. For example, Dr. Michael T. Grant specializes in knee, ankle, shoulder, and hip joint replacement, rotator cuff surgery (arthroscopy or open surgery,

or a combination of both), and ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) reconstruction, and is also authorized by the New York State Workers’ Compensation Board to act as a comp injury specialist for Workers’ Compensation patients. Once you’ve decided on a surgical team, establish a timeline for recovery that includes the acute, subacute, and chronic phases. Ask what physical therapy is recommended for your particular condition, and how long it usually lasts. Start physical therapy in accordance with your recovery schedule, and be assertive and proactive during your treatments. Set realistic goals; the more you understand about your condition, the more you’ll feel in control of your recovery. And, always follow up. There are no shortcuts to recovery, but following the advice of your doctor and therapist—which may mean doing exercises at home, or wearing supports or braces as prescribed—will help you achieve the best outcome in the shortest time. Physical rehabilitation often begins before you leave the hospital, and may continue at home or at an outpatient center. If closer supervision is required initially, patients may start recovery at an inpatient rehabilitation center, such as Beechwood Continuing Care’s Wesley Rehabilitation Center. There, highly trained staff provide patients with short-term rehabilitation services in a comfortable, homelike setting before releasing them to a lower level of care like in-home assistance or outpatient rehab. In-home assistance can range from 24/7 in-home nursing, to light housekeeping and personal assistant help— having these people in place before you’re released will ease your mind— and may be coupled with outpatient rehab at a place like McGuire Group Rehabilitation Centers. Their facilities offer physical training equipment (parallel bars, recumbent bikes, stairs, treadmills, weight-lifting equipment, whirlpool baths, ultrasound therapy), as well as full-scale Activities of Daily Living suites designed for specialized training in navigating the kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and laundry. Learning safe ways to manage daily living not only allows you to transition to life at home, but also prevents falls, muscle strains and other injuries that could set your recovery back. Recovering from physical trauma means returning to your life, and that’s a positive journey. The choices you make, and the hard work you put in, can make all of the difference. Terri Parsell Hilmey is a freelance writer living in Clarence Center.

ure—winter lasts six months and there are no palm trees, but that doesn’t mean Orchard Park isn’t a little slice of paradise, especially in summer. That’s when backyards become living rooms, dinner is always grilled, and residents get ready for Quaker Days and the Taste of Orchard Park. Dave and Rachel Cabin, owners of The Jeweler’s Studio (thejewelersstudio.com) on North Buffalo Road, know all about Orchard Park’s quiet sophistication; it’s why they chose to set up shop downtown. “Our favorite thing about Orchard Park in the summer is getting out and enjoying the charm of the village,” says Rachel. “The music plays from the lamp posts, and the village is decorated with beautiful flower boxes and hanging baskets. We love taking walks and visiting other merchants. We love the Taste of Orchard Park and the auto show; both are hosted right on North Buffalo Road.” Among other jewelry service, sales, and repairs, Dave designs custom bridal and anniversary settings, and the

Cabins have become such neighborhood figures that they’ve had to add more open house events to accommodate everyone who wants a “Dave original.” “Our longest standing tradition is our wish list event every fall. It’s like an open house with food, refreshments, friends, giveaways and, of course, jewels,” says Rachel. “It’s become so popular we have recently added other events for spring and summer, [including a] bridal and anniversary showcase and custom/restyling events.” Quaker Days, a hometown favorite that includes Taste of Orchard Park and much, much more, runs July 24-30. “The Taste of Orchard Park is our Southtowns food festival where independent restaurants set up on North Buffalo Road to display and sell their food,” explains Fran Ricotta, who owns Mangia Ristorante & Caffe (mangiaristorante.com) with husband John. “There’s usually a very nice turnout.” “I’ve been here in Orchard Park since the festival’s inception,” says Joe Wales, eleven-year Taste of Orchard

Park chair and president of Arthur’s Hardware and Arthur’s Home Furnishings on West Quaker Street. “Quaker Days is really the biggest and the best example of everything Orchard Park has to offer, and it attracts literally thousands of people to our little town.” The friendly staff at Arthur’s hears the same thing from all of those visitors: they can’t believe how much the stores carry. But it’s not just the variety and quality of the products that impresses people; they’re also pleasantly surprised by the old-fashioned service. “We carry brands that we’re proud to sell, like Toro lawnmowers, STIHL equipment, Weber grills, and Benjamin Moore paint,” Wales says. “But we also have highly trained staff members who talk to the customers and find them exactly what they need. We offer free local delivery and assembly, too.” (To help friends and neighbors get set for summer, Arthur’s Home Furnishings will be running a patio furniture sale from July 21 to 23—stop in to see the variety of colors and styles.) “What I’m looking forward to most this summer is seeing people out and about walking through the village, dining outdoors, and relaxing by the fire pits on our rooftop bar,” says Ricotta. “It’s just wonderful to see people out and enjoying life.” Reform Gym (Reform Fitness on Facebook) owner Brittany Gabryel is also all about the Taste, but, she balances all of Orchard Park’s great dining options with plenty of exercise. “I love celebrating our town and sampling all of the delicious local foods!” she says, “but my favorite thing to do in the summer is to take my dog, Huck, for long walks through Chestnut Ridge.” Gabryel also spends a good deal of her time at the gym on East Quaker Street, helping community members meet their fitness goals safely and enjoyably. For newcomers, Gabryel offers a discounted first-class special of ten dollars. She is also planning Saturday events with vendors set up in the gym’s lobby. Pedego Electric Bikes, a business new to Orchard Park, is offering WNYers another fun new way to enjoy the area. You can pedal the Pedego electric bike just like a regular bike, or give it a little twist of the throttle, and ride! With a variety of models available, Pedego has a bike for every lifestyle. and guaranteed high-quality craftsmanship. Design professionals Mike Cooke and David Olejniczak find themselves inspired by Orchard Park’s “Main Street America” ambiance, and impressed by the diverse housing styles, but it’s more than the architecture that attracted them to Orchard Park. “We love the diversity of projects we get involved with, the relationships we’re able to develop with clientele,” says Cooke. “The residents and their fields of expertise are so diverse.” Insurance needs transcend seasons, and, since 1973, the small friendly staff at Orchard Park’s Terranova Insurance Services has sold only the most reputable auto, home, commercial, and life insurance products. Visit when you come in for Quaker Days this month, or check terranovainsurance.com for additional information or an online quote. Hogenkamp Optics (hogenkampoptics.net), located on West Quaker Street, is a full-service office staffed with licensed opticians and contact lens practitioners that will help you see well and look good. “Selecting eyewear with the proper shape, color, and size is exciting for us and is what sets us apart. The combined experience of three opticians allows us to help people of all ages choose the coolest styling and proper shape selection,” Hogenkamp states on its website. With topline brands like Prada, Gucci, Kate Spade, Dior, and more, bespectacled fashionistas and sharpdressed men alike will strut their stuff with confidence. And for those with 20/20 vision, Hogenkamp carries more than 370 pairs of non-prescription sunglasses ready to custom fit, and lifetime fitting and service have always been included in the price. Quaker Days, the annual Lions Club Classic Car Show, the Lindsay Matthews 5K Run, Artify the Park, and other annual events bring carloads of visitors to Orchard Park— and some love it so much they start checking out more permanent accommodations. The Hammocks at Orchard Park (thehammocksatorchardpark.com) offers luxury apartments with resort-style living. The Hammocks advertise a twenty-fourhour private clubhouse, state-of-theart fitness center, swimming pool, hot tub, and Internet café—and the central location means that nothing is too far away. rom our sandy beaches to Outer Harbor, Canalside, the Niagara River, and beyond, Buffalo’s revitalized waterfront is the hallmark of our city’s much publicized renaissance. With activities, events, and parties planned every week this summer, Buffalo’s shores and riverfronts have become ideal destinations for anyone looking to get away for a few hours, a weekend, or longer. A capital campaign is under way to raise funds for a Canalside Explore & More Children’s Museum (exploreandmore.org), a hands-on experience that sparks curiosity and imagination. “The new museum, set to open at the end of 2018, will be 40,000 square feet at the apex of the canals, with seven educational play zones that tell the stories of Buffalo in new, fun and engaging ways for families,” says communications and marketing manager Jennifer Fee. In the meantime, get a preview this summer by checking out Explore & More’s outdoor programming at Canalside, as well as the flagship museum in East Aurora. “On Fridays from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Explore & More is presenting fun, themed, free outdoor programs and activities at Canalside, thanks to the generous sponsorship of Wegmans and WNY Immediate Care. These activities are located under the tents on the lawns by the canals,” says Fee, who adds that, at the East Aurora location, “On Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., families can drop in to our Wednesday WOW programs, with ongoing, themed hands-on activities for all ages. These special programs are free with admission or membership.” Returning to Canalside this summer is the Saturday Artisan Market, or “SAM,” now in its fifth season. The Market runs May through October, with ten regular market dates set, but, as director Robin Lenhard reveals, “On August 6, we’ll be acknowledging SAM’s fifth birthday with some special celebrations. This season, we’re also adding more vendors since the expanded boardwalk— constructed during the off-season—has given us room to stretch our wings. We’ll have forty tents now, most weeks.

“Canalside is a magical place to be on a summer Saturday,” Lenhard continues. “We’re proud to have been a part of its programming since the beginning. We’re always meeting new people each time we’re there—folks who are just now getting around to visiting the site for the first time, or visitors from out of town who are making the most of the ‘new Buffalo.’ It’s been really gratifying to be part of that.” Collins Marine (collinsmarine. com), a lakefront fixture since the fifties, is also expanding and improving to meet the needs of Buffalo’s increased population and tourist traffic. Located just one mile from the Erie Canal and four miles from Lake Erie and Canalside, the marina will likely see almost 100 percent occupancy, plus plenty of day-trippers. “This year, Collins Marine has added ten more jet ski floats, bringing the total available to thirty-two, along with our 250 boat slips,” says sales manager John Zimdahl. “We strive to have the lowest gas price on the river, and, this year, we will have ice back at the Gas Dock for [boaters’] convenience. We work hard at keeping the marina clean and now have Wi-fi. Our friendly renters are always willing to give their neighbors a hand, and our popularity is boosted by the beautiful Chaparral and Robalo boats we sell.” The annual Color Run Buffalo 5K race takes place August 20, and regional marketing specialist Katie Morrison says this year’s event has some tricks up its (rainbow-colored) sleeve—namely, the Tropicolor World Tour. “It will enhance the experience that Color Runners already love with an all-new Tropicolor Zone course where participants will be bathed in a tropical array of colors and island scents as they pass through palm trees, arches, and island-style music,” she says. “During the Finish Festival, participants can enjoy the Color Run’s Rainbow Beach with music, dancing, and photo opportunities. Runners will also receive a limited edition participant kit. The Tropicolor World Tour will combine the enjoyment of a 5K with all the fun of an islandstyle vacation—full of unforgettable memories, music, and colors.” But it’s not just about what runners will get—it’s about what they’ll give, since the Color Run is partnering with Shoes on Students, a charity that helps underprivileged student athletes obtain the gear they need to participate in school sports. iagara County offers so much to see and do in the summer, it’s hard to know where to start. One obvious choice is world wonder and honeymoon capital Niagara Falls; the Niagara Falls State Park offers more than 400 acres of gorgeous landscape, wildlife, and a variety of attractions. Each year, millions of visitors enjoy up-close views of the majestic waterfalls via the Maid of the Mist Boat Tour and the Cave of the Winds. Both the American and Horseshoe Falls can be viewed at the same time from the Observation Tower. The Niagara Adventure Theater offers new perspectives of the Falls, while the Niagara Gorge Discovery Center has interactive displays. Take the Niagara Scenic Trolley for a great way to see the park, or visit the Schoellkopf Power Plant Ruins or the Aquarium of Niagara. Stop at the Visitor Center, and find out about moneysaving combination passes. Wine lovers won’t want to miss the Niagara Wine Trail, which offers year-round tours, events and festivals—all in the beautiful countryside on the Niagara Escarpment. And for shoppers, there’s antiquing in Lewiston and Sanborn, as well as farmers’ markets, including Niagara Falls City Market, the North Tonawanda City Market or Park Place Market. At night, concerts and theater are happening at Artpark, also in Lewiston. Sample a Rock Workshop, Free Family Movie Nights, and the Emerald Grove interactive art installation, with original works by regional artists throughout the grounds. OLD FORT NIAGARA Old Fort Niagara is a must for history buffs. Fourth of July weekend features the largest reenactment of the year, the French and Indian War Encampment. Hundreds of reenactors will be on hand to re-create the French fort’s capture by the British. This summer, a new program emphasizing the fort’s role in the American Revolution, will be part of the fun, according to executive director Bob Emerson. Daily living history programs will be featured throughout July and the first two weeks of August. Weekly themed programs will highlight specific Revolution years and history, including 1775, 1778, and 1780. “We remade all the uniforms and have new muskets,” says Emerson. “Our living history people will look like they just enlisted in the Army.” On July 31, the BPO plays a program of patriotic favorites, capped with fireworks.

LOCKPORT “A day in Lockport is a day well spent!” enthuses Heather Peck, program manager for Lockport Main Street, Inc. Start by visiting the Lockport Community Market at Canal Street, which runs every Saturday through October 8 from 9 a.m. to 2p.m. Get an early start during the months of July and August with a free 7 a.m. yoga session near the gazebo, then visit the farmers, artisans, and vendors while listening to a variety of music. “There is a little something for everyone,” says Peck. Boat on the Erie Canal, or just enjoy its beauty while fishing, strolling, or biking. The Lockport Cave and Underground Boat Ride offers a seventy-minute guided tour, which includes a walk through a water tunnel. The Kenan Art Center provides visitors with arts, education, and recreation programs. Family activities, art exhibits, theater, and special events are offered throughout the year. DINING When dinnertime rolls around, Jaguar at the Bistro in Youngstown offers Mexican cuisine with a new approach. From the taco of the day to slow-cooked octopus, chef Victor Parra Gonzalez and sous chef Diana Parra work hard to ensure their guests are served eclectic, flavorful food. Enjoy healthy meals, juice, and smoothies at 700 Center Street Juice Bistro and Café, Lewiston’s “lifestyle destination.” Everything on the menu, from wraps to gluten-free salads, is delicious and guilt-free. Even better, there are two patios so you never have to stop enjoying the weather. “Summer will be fun for us,” says owner Barbara Crouthamel, who adds that 700 Center Street now features Hugh Jackman’s line of coffee. “All proceeds go to support fair trade. We are plugged into a greater cause.” MEMORIES Sue Sullivan, owner of Sue’s Frame of Mind, says, “Art, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Once something has been framed with the customer’s idea, their love comes out in the piece of art.” Framing art from one of Niagara County’s many shows and festivals preserves both the art and the memories, but Sullivan has other suggestions, as well. If you celebrated a special occasion with a bottle of wine on the Niagara Wine Trail, why not frame the label and the cork? Or photos from a jet boat or Maid of the Mist excursion?
