are excited to announce that construction is underway for a new, 30,000-square-foot, multi-specialty surgery center on Pleasant Avenue in Lakeview. “It will be like a mini hospital for the Southtowns,” explains Dr. Vishal Sharma. “We’ve been planning this for the past seven to eight years, and we expect occupancy by September. In addition to Lakeshore Eyecare and Sharma Family Medicine, UB|MD, Great Lakes Imaging, and Premier Medical Pharmacy will be
located there. We’re currently talking with other health care service providers as well, so we will have plenty to offer patients.” Hogenkamp Optics, on Quaker Street in the heart of Orchard Park’s quaint commercial district, carries all the latest fashions in prescription eyewear and non-prescription sunglasses. Taking care of joints and muscles By James “Bo” Catanese, Pharm.D.

aybe you’ve been there, or were just there this morning. You get out of bed, and aches and pains in your back, knees, or, worse, your entire body, make you feel like you were hit by a truck. Joint and muscle issues may not be life threatening, but orthopedic problems get high marks among medical conditions most likely to interfere with quality of life. Orthopedic issues, which afflict bones, joints, and muscles, are common causes of long-term pain and physical disability. Conditions include arthritis, fibromyalgia, back and knee pain, ligament issues, osteoporosis, and more. Generally, these issues result from autoimmune irregularities,
years of wear and tear on the body, or unhealthy habits. Of the many preventative steps for maintaining and improving orthopedic health, diet and exercise are most important. Exercises that focus on strength and flexibility, such as brisk walking, light jogging, and light weight or resistance band training, are great for the muscles and joints. Be careful, though, especially if you already have orthopedic issues, to avoid high impact exercises that can further damage bones and joints. Likewise, a healthy, well-balanced diet provides bones and muscles with essential nutrients for proper growth and maintenance. Especially important are proper amounts of

calcium and vitamin D, which are integral to bone health. Vitamin D can be obtained from sun exposure, while calcium is generally ingested through foods like milk, cheese, spinach, and broccoli. A healthy diet has the added benefit of promoting healthy weight, which puts less stress on bones and joints. Beyond diet and exercise, prevention also includes maintaining healthy posture, both during the day and while sleeping, and wearing footwear that provides comfort and support. Finally, don’t ignore issues. When injuries occur, don’t push your way through; instead, ice, elevate, and rest the area. If the swelling or pain intensifies over time, see a doctor before further damage is done. Preventative measures are important, as is staying committed to them even after orthopedic diagnosis. If you’re really struggling, it might be time to try a more intensive approach. Diagnosis from an orthopedic specialist is essential to proper treatment geared toward your specific issue. Depending on your condition, conventional treatment can include physical therapy, orthopedic aids, and supports. From a medication standpoint, pain relievers are a mainstay of orthopedic treatment. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants, or drugs that reduce nerve pain are often prescribed to reduce pain and inflammation. The downfall to these medications is the side effects, from gastrointestinal issues to sedation and grogginess. When side effects become intrusive, or potential drug interactions are a concern, orthopedic physicians can prescribe custommixed pain creams from specialty compounding pharmacies. Applied directly to the area of pain, the creams combine drugs that attack pain in multiple mechanisms, while limiting the systemic absorption that occurs with oral medications. This limited absorption renders side effects and drug interactions nearly non-existent. Patients looking for a more natural approach to joint pain relief can try products that contain mixtures of anti-inflammatory herbals such as curcumin (derived from turmeric) and boswellia, as well as minerals that support the joints such as zinc and selenium. Further, supplements such glucosamine, MSM, and collagen, can support the production of cartilage, the joint’s natural cushion; hyaluronic acid can aid in joint lubrication. Because these supplements work synergistically, it is best to find them in an all-in-one supplement such

Likewise, a healthy, well-balanced diet provides bones and muscles with essential nutrients for proper growth and maintenance as Designs for Health’s® Arthrosoothe™. Omega-3s, found in quality fish oil, also act as anti-inflammatories. When buying fish oil, read the label carefully, as many can be misleading, labeling total fish oil concentration, or total omega-3 concentration, which includes even inactive omega-3 ALA in its potency. Ensure that the concentrations of the active omega3s, EPH and DHA are sufficient in the product you buy. Aim for at least 1000mg of EPA per day, as this is the anti-inflammatory omega-3. Finally, as mentioned earlier, calcium and vitamin D are essential when combatting bone issues. If despite your best efforts, deficiencies present, supplementation is an option. For vitamin D, take the active form, D3. Depending on your level of deficiency, take in the range of 2,000IU10,000IU per day. For calcium, there are many different forms, such as carbonate and citrate, and, unfortunately, some are poorly absorbed. Choose a highly absorbable form, such as malate, as your body will better utilize the supplement. If osteoporosis or osteopenia is a concern, consider a more intensive product such as MCHC, a specialized form of calcium that provides further nutrients for bone repair and rebuilding. These types of supplements, along with the specialty pain cream mixtures mentioned above, can generally be found at specialty pharmacies such as Pine Pharmacy in Williamsville. You only get one body in life, so take care of it well. James “Bo” Catanese, Pharm.D. is a pharmacist at Pine Pharmacy.

A city for the whole family Exploring the familyfriendly city of Rochester BY JINELLE SHENGULET TE

ust a short drive down I-90 sits a thriving city where families will find plenty to keep the kids and adults occupied and satisfied. Rochester boasts an abundance of festivals in the summertime, excellent parks to hike, waterways to cruise, museums to visit, places to shop—and plenty of activities for the thrill seeker in all of us. We’ve compiled a list of family attractions in the Rochester area and beyond. For additional ideas and information on the city, check out visitrochester.com.

History and art There is a variety of museums to visit in the city, covering the subjects of art, science, and history. One of the most prominent, the Memorial Art Gallery (MAG), is located within the Neighborhood of the Arts. The gallery has 12,000 items in its permanent collection, including works by Monet, Rembrandt, and Winslow Homer. The MAG also features an outdoor gathering space with a regular schedule of events, including lectures, art classes, concerts, and the
Clothesline Arts Festival. Family/ Community Days focus on different cultures with “hands-on art activities, music and dance demonstrations, storytelling, and a variety of cultural displays,” say organizers. If photog raphy is more your style, Rochester (a.k.a. The World’s Image Center) is a great place to visit. George Eastman, founder of the Eastman Kodak Company, lived the majority of his life in the city, and his mansion has since been converted into the George Eastman Museum (GEM), the world’s oldest

photography museum. One of the highlights of the summer at the George Eastman Museum will be the Eugene Richards: The Run-On of Time exhibition, opening June 10. This exhibition will feature the work of Eugene Richards, a photojournalist and documentary photographer who has explored complicated subjects such as racism, poverty, drug addiction, family, aging, terrorism, and the effects of war throughout his career. Richards will be offered from June 10 to October 22. There are also rotating photo and cinema exhibits as well as regular film screenings of classic films at the Dryden Theatre, located within the museum. Fun for family members who may prefer history to art, the Genesee Country Village & Museum (GCV&M) in the hamlet of Mumford is a place where the past comes alive. Less than an hour drive from Buffalo, this largest living history museum in New York state features nineteenth-century buildings that form a “village” complete with costumed residents. Visitors can take classes in tinsmithing, blacksmithing, historic cooking, outdoor skills, and more. The truly adventurous can rent the Pioneer House for a fullimmersion experience into the life of a nineteenth-century villager, to include working the fields, tending to farm animals, and more. Already home to the only nineteenth-century brewery in the country, the museum will also introduce a hard cider product made from just honey and apple juice this summer. Summer camps are also available at GCV&M, and they run for six weeks in July and August.
Shopping For quirky boutiques and vintage threads, visit Monroe Avenue in downtown Rochester or the South Wedge neighborhood. To find the name brands the family knows best, check out the area’s three malls. Eastview Mall in Victor caters to high-end shoppers, with designer names like Vera Bradley, Michael Kors, and Swarovski. Upscale fashion can also be found within Eastview at the lavish department store Von Maur—Eastview has its only location in the whole Northeast. There are plenty of attractions for younger visitors of Eastview as well, with stores like Build-A-Bear Workshop, Lego, and more. New stores coming soon

are Box Lunch and Soft Surroundings, and Tesla charging stations will also be added in the near future. When the shopping and spending money has worked up an appetite— and it always does—take the whole crew to a nice, sit-down dining experience. Visit any of the restaurants at the front entrance of the mall, which include P.F. Chang’s China Bistro, Champps Americana, Biaggi’s Ristorante Italiano, and Bonefish Grill. Or, for a meal the kids won’t soon forget, pick up some gourmet macaroni and cheese at Macarollin, and finish it off with an ice cream cone from Marble Slab Creamery.
Seabreeze Amusement Park Chances are there is no place your kids would rather be this summer than an amusement park, especially one with heart-stopping roller coasters and a large waterpark. Luckily, not far from the shores of Lake Ontario sits Seabreeze Amusement Park, which originally opened in 1879, making it the fourth oldest amusement park in the country. Despite being relatively unknown in the Buffalo area, Seabreeze entertains hundreds of thousands of visitors each summer with a combination of classic amusement park features and a modern

water park. There are more than seventy additional attractions in the park, including thrill rides, kiddie rides, live shows, the waterpark, and more. New this year is the Time Machine, a ride that takes brave volunteers around the face of a three-story clock in a rotating gondola. Plan to spend a full day at Seabreeze to fully enjoy all that this family-fun destination has to offer.
Gateway to the Finger Lakes Several of the eleven Finger Lakes are just a short drive from Rochester, the closest being Conesus, Canadice, Hemlock, Honeoye, and Canandaigua Lakes. The Finger Lakes is established as one of the best wine regions in the world, but it has also recently emerged as a culinary hot spot, with a range of impressive eateries. The region is a beautiful place to visit year-round, featuring waterfalls, gorges, and more. About a forty-fiveminute drive from Rochester is Letchworth State Park, a.k.a. the “Grand Canyon of the East.” The park covers more than 14,000 acres and includes three major waterfalls—one more than 100 feet high. Swimming pools, fishing areas, hiking trails, hot air ballooning, whitewater rafting and canoeing by permit are just a few of the attractions at Letchworth. Camping sites are available, as are lodges and a country inn with fine dining called The Glen Iris Inn. For a destination with just as much grandeur as its surrounding landscape, check out Belhurst Castle in Geneva. Belhurst features three luxurious lodging options: the chambers of the castle, the Vinifera Inn, and the White Springs Manor. Visitors can also enjoy a salon and spa, the Belhurst Estate Winery, and fine dining at Edgar’s Steakhouse or the new Stonecutter’s restaurant. If the family prefers thrills to nature’s beauty, Bristol Mountain and Roseland Waterpark should do the trick. In the winter months, Bristol Mountain serves as a popular ski resort in the Finger Lakes area. In the warmer months, though, the whole family can enjoy the Aerial Adventure Park and Zipline Canopy Tour. The Aerial Adventure Park offers challenging courses for all skill levels up in the canopy, made up of ziplines, tight rope walks, rope ladders, and bridges. The Zipline Canopy Tour boasts seven ziplines covering 5,000 feet. Roseland Waterpark, owned by Bristol Mountain, is a great place to cool down on hot summer days. The largest waterpark in the region covers fifty-six acres with a wave pool, raft ride,

It also contains Roseland Wake Park, where a cable wakeboarding system pulls riders along the water, and they can choose whether or not to attack any of the obstacles over to the side.
