TREAT YOURSELF WELL AND PREPARE FOR WINTER BY TERRI PARSELL HILMEY
“If winter comes, can spring be far behind?” – Percy Bysshe Shelley “Ode to the West Wind” Winter in Western New York can mean skiing, ice skating, snuggly sweaters, and cozy fires. It can also mean biting cold wind, freezing temperatures, and dry air that lead to dry skin, peeling cuticles, cracked heels, and unruly hair. The areas of your body most vulnerable to dry air are the exposed ones—hair, face, hands, and even feet. Cracked, dry heels are not only painful, but can also bleed
and become infected if not properly cared for. Moisturized heels don’t crack, so an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and the good news is that most treatments combine the practical with the blissful. Trés Auraé, in the lobby of the Wyndham Garden Hotel in Williamsville, has indoor parking, a bonus when the snow is falling. It also has an hour-long spa pedicure. Meg, on staff at Trés Auraé, describes it as “getting the most TLC for your feet. We start with soaking and exfoliation, and then we follow with towels and a nice, long massage. While you’re having that done, we give you a warming neck wrap while you recline in your chair.” Sounds nice, no? You can also add a Lamina face mask www.buffalospree.com

that contains seaweeds and botanicals for depuffing, destressing, and hydrating. To make sure your feet are pretty, as well as healthy, add your favorite shade of OPI nail polish (perhaps Suzi Skis the Pyrenees?). Capello Salons, at three locations, offer the “Award-Winning Pedicure,” during which your feet and lower legs are bathed in warm water with Footlogix Foot Soak. “Your nails are cut and filed to the desired length and buffed,” says Capello’s Laura Labert, “and your feet are scrubbed with a foot file, exfoliated with Creative Nail Design Sugar Scrub, massaged with Footlogix Foot Cream, and then your nails are cleaned and polished.” Your feet will feel and look great, even in boots. If you’ve ever had a hot stone massage, you can imagine what it might feel like on your feet. And if you can’t imagine, then visit Excuria on Main Street in Williamsville to experience the real deal. “Our hot stone pedicure is a great treat during the cold months,” says salon and spa manager Andrea Gorczyca. “The heated polished lava stones will melt away your stress, while our deeply hydrating products will help with those dry heels!” Paraffin helps seal in the moisture generated from hydration products and helps increase softness and soothe dry skin in both pedicures and manicures. Experience it at Excuria, Spa Niagara, and White Oaks Resort in Ontario. For hair and scalp rejuvenation, particularly if you’ve logged a lot of sun hours this past summer, Canvas Salon and Gallery offers a Surface Awaken Scalp Facial for a ten-dollar upcharge with all cuts. “It relieves itchy dry skin, awakens your scalp, and increases blood flow to the scalp,” says Jaime Brawdy, owner and stylist at Canvas. “You get a ten-minute head massage, and when it’s over you feel super nice, tingly, very deep clean. It’s a client favorite here, and all of our girls give a really great massage.” Canvas also uses hair masks that are organic, glutenfree, paraben-free, cruelty-free, and vegan. “The mask brings the hair back from sun damage and protects and hydrates for the winter,” says Brawdy. If you’re still yearning for summer and lighter hair, try the new craze: Pravana Blond Wand! As part of the product launch, Salon in the City-Houk Lofts will have it first this fall! “I am a regional trainer for the hair color manufacturer,

so we’re part of the launch process,” says owner Stacie Kowalski. “It’s really amazing. You can get perfectly blond highlights, up to seven levels, in under thirty seconds. You can get a full head of highlights on your lunch hour, and because the coconut oil-based lightener hydrates the hair and the product is on the hair for such a short period of time, your hair will be in better condition when you leave. It’s a wonderful proprietary technology where the panels don’t touch each other; they create a hovering motion with ventilation and don’t touch the hair.” The Blond Wand also makes it easier and less damaging to do fantasy colors, because the hair needs to be lightened before application of the color, and the Blond Wand conditions hair prior to coloring, saving about fifty minutes of processing time. For keeping your mane conditioned, Michael Bryant, owner of Studio M Hair Design, has recommendations. “The best product out is by Aveda, Scalp Benefits; if you’ve got a dry scalp or itching, that’s what I recommend,” he says. “And, for year-round, it’s Agadir Argan Oil. I put it everywhere on my clients, their scalp, the roots of their hair, the ends. It’s really light, and it doesn’t collect any dirt, just use a dime-sized dot in your hand, and rub it through, distributing it evenly, all over your head.” For a daily shampoo, Bryant recommends Goldwell Dual Sense Rich Repair Shampoo, so moisturizing and non-stripping, “that the girls in my shop who wash hair don’t get dry hands anymore, and they really used to, having their hands in water so often.” Studio M also offers a Kerasilk intensive smoothing and moisturizing mask, added to any treatment for an additional ten dollars. “We put that on the hair after we shampoo, put a plastic cap over the hair and put the customer under a hair dryer for ten minutes,” Bryant says. “It’s unbelievable deep moisturizing.” For complete head-to-toe harmony, exfoliating, and moisturizing, indulge in “The Perfect Circle” treatment at White Oaks Resort and Spa at Niagara-on-the-Lake. An effleurage massage (a soft, gentle form of massage, using a light, stroking touch) that pays special attention to the neck and scalp, is followed by a relaxing foot massage and facial. It’s two hours of bliss that puts nearly every client to sleep! Spa Niagara has its own version of the full-body treatment, the Sugar www.buffalospree.com

Glow. A mixture of pure sugar and essential oils is applied all over the body to stimulate circulation and create an invigorating, exfoliating, moisturizing (exactly what you’re looking for in the winter) treatment that softens dry skin, elbows, and heels—it’s as practical as it is decadent. At Corto’s, with three locations (Orchard Park, Hamburg, and South Buffalo), the Salt Wrap is a full-body exfoliation that uses Epsom and sea salts. Aestheticians apply it to the skin, massage and exfoliate, then wrap you in a towel and send you to the shower before bringing you back for an hour-long massage with hydrating oil. “You can completely detoxify and feel like you’re floating out of herewith a treatment you can feel the benefits of for days, even weeks,” says manager Mary Beth Booth. “And when you’re finished, you can end it with a custom-blended spray tan, applied by hand by one of our aestheticians, to leave you with a warm summer glow, inside and out.” And, of course, if it’s a bit of brown you’re looking for, Total Tan has Mystic Spray Tans in private booths. Keep your eyes peeled for the biggest sales day of the year, New Year’s Bash, which takes place this year on Thursday, December 29. “Thursday is always one of the biggest Mystic days of the week, because of the weekend coming up, and it’s the time of year when everyone wants a sunless glow; everyone wants to look great for the new year,” says Rachel, director of operations. “For the Mystic, you want to exfoliate before you come, and apply a light moisturizer—not oil-based— for best results. But always remember if you get your spray tan before you go on vacation, it’s not a sunscreen; you’ve still got to protect your skin from the sun’s rays.” For any summer-inflicted sun damage to the face, IPL (intense

pulsed light) treatments are offered at Niagara Dermatology and are recommended in fall and winter. “You can’t do it in the summertime,” says Dr. Anne Ramsdell. “November is perfect, because you don’t want to have a background tan. It works similar to a laser, but where a laser is only one wavelength, this is a bunch of different wavelengths, targeting brown pigment on the skin from sun damage or freckles, and also targeting redness, dilated blood vessels.” Perfect for your face, hands, arms, neck, and chest décolleté, IPL treatment makes your dark spots darker for a day or two, and then they will exfoliate over the next five to seven days, not to return. You can go right back to work the same day, and any redness is easily covered with normal makeup. Most clients are satisfied with results after one treatment. Dr. Andrew Giacobbe in Williamsville also offers laser therapy treatments, along with chemical peels and microdermabrasion, to help repair sun-damaged skin. Laser therapy treatments are also effective for skin rejuvenation, hair reduction, pigment and wrinkle reduction, acne, rosacea, and skin resurfacing. Microdermabrasion is an exfoliative form of skin resurfacing, resulting in softer, smoother skin, reduction in the appearance of pores and scarring, improvement in skin tone and vibrancy, and reduction in fine lines and wrinkles. Chemical peels (AHA, TCA, and BHA) improve the skin’s color, freshness, texture, and tone. Michele Griffasi of Michele for Hair & Day Spa swears by Aveda products and is currently excited about the company’s new skin care line, Tulasara. “Tulasara combines a dry brushing of the face, using the brush in a circular motion to exfoliate, massage the skin and increase circulation, and fill in fine lines by bringing blood to the surface,” says Griffasi. “It’s followed by an oleation

oil that you massage in and leave for a few minutes. This is a daily routine that will help you to potentially postpone more drastic resurfacing measures later on, and, if you want to add another specific treatment to it, you may, with either a brightening concentrate, firming concentrate, or calming concentrate. It’s also a very basic system with only two parts, and perhaps a concentrate, very simple and easy.” Stop in and consult with Griffasi or a stylist about products for your skin type. The weather might get cold and snowy in Western New York, but we are blessed. Tornados? Not really. Hurricanes? Nope. Monsoons? Earthquakes? Actually, no. We’ve got a Great Lake that manages our weather, moderates it, and maybe gives us some snow until it finally freezes over—not too bad. So, from the time they put the ice boom on the lake to the time they take it out, wait it out by treating yourself and your body, from tip to toe, with tender, loving care. he holiday season is upon us, and your gift list seems ever longer: kids, friends, spouses, partners, bosses, neighbors, teachers, the woman from your yoga class who’s hosting that tasting party next week… Well, shrug that stress off your shoulders, because Buffalo business owners have you covered. With so many thoughtful and practical gift options close to home, everyone on your list will be checked off with time to spare—time you can spend curled up in front of a fire with some eggnog and your favorite gingerbread man. Connie Constantine, artist and coowner of Abino Mills Glassworks (abinomills.com; 255 Delaware Avenue),
understands that it can be difficult to find original gifts and works with customers to create one-of-a-kind presents. “We guide our customers to the perfect gift by asking what their recipient drinks, or if s/he loves flowers, or loves entertaining,” she says. “Is it a red wine glass, or a vase or a bowl that would best fit? We create monograms and custom designs, and have a large number of our designs that are ready to se.” The Constantines can also create designs from customers’ photographs of dogs, houses, boats—anything! “Come in early to talk about what we can do for you, and so that we can have time to create the perfect gift for one person or for many people,” Constantine recommends. “We always have beautiful pieces etched with our designs ready to go, too.” Remember when you saw just the right gift for your sister, www.buffalospree.com

Have no regrets; visit buffalosaturdayartmarket.com and connect with the artist. “We have many, many talented local craftpersons and artists in Western New York who are great resources for holiday shopping,” says SAM’s Robin Lenhard. “[They make] everything from jewelry to clothing to pottery to furniture and home accessories—paintings, framed prints and photographs, and functional art like pottery and lamps. Buffalo SAM artisans offer a wide variety of gift-giving solutions at all price points.” At four convenient locations in Cheektowag a (Walden Galleria), Orchard Park, East Aurora, and Ellicottville, Caméléon Ladies Boutique (facebook.com/cameleonbuffalocarries) has the latest designs from Alex & Ani, Baggallini, Brighton, Kameleon, Lokai, Mantraband, and Vera Bradley. And, with special holiday promotions on now, there is no better time to get that special gift. To gift a little bit of luxury, visit Renew Bath & Body (renewbathandbody.com; 927 Elmwood Avenue), where owner Tom Akers makes gifting simple with his all-natural skin care products for men, women, and babies. “We do custom gift baskets, and we have a variety of ways to package any products in the store,” he says. “We can even take orders for corporate gifting, so an employer can give great gifts to employees, clients, or customers; just order by December 15!” With soaps, scrubs, bath bombs, oils, lotions, and more, Akers can put together beautiful gifts for everyone on your list. And, for those who are in a hurry, there are premade baskets at varied price points ready for in-store pick-up. For the women in your life, head to the Little Black Dress Shop (littleblackdress.biz; 662-3765; 3527 North Buffalo Road, Orchard Park), where fashionistas can find Clara Sun Woo,
Moonlight, IC Collection, Yushi, Frank Lyman, and more. With decades of retail and fashion experience, owner Gail Gill and her staff are ready to help you select a gift or a stunning outfit for New Year’s Eve. “We feature casual, chic clothing for day and elegant eveningwear, including gowns for prom, and mother-of-the-bride dresses,” Gill says. “We also carry accessories, jewelry, purses, and gifts.” If you’ve got the stockings of Bills and Sabres fans to stuff, look no further than Bay-6, Buffalo Clothing Co. (bay6buffaloclothing.com; 1050 Union Road in the Southgate Plaza, West Seneca). “Our most popular items for the holiday season are our graphic T-shirts, sweatshirts, and caps,” says co-owner Suzanne Miller. “Most designs incorporate some sort of celebration of our city [on] tri-blend [fabrics] that are ridiculously soft with subtle hues. The best way to show your Buffalove is to wear it.” For ex-pats far-flung from their beloved city, Miller suggests sending hometown reminders. “Whether it be a vintage t-shirt with comfy Buffalo sweats, a LOVE BFLO pillow, a celebratory city ornament for their tree, or simply the etched Buffalo coffee mug that sits on their desk, the possibilities are endless at Bay-6, Buffalo Clothing Co,” she promises. Remember to shop early; Bay-6 introduces new products daily, and periodically retires items to keep inventory stock fresh. For a can’t-go-wrong gift, visit the pros at Gates Circle Wine & Liquor (gatescircleliquor.com; 1430 Delaware Avenue). Lesle Heubach, who owns the store along with parents Jan and Leonora Carscallen, says the most popular holiday gifts and hostess offerings will always be the basics: cabernet, chardonnay, and merlot. “Chances are, someone will like one of those,” she says. “But I always tell people, ‘buy what you like.’ That way, when you give it, you can explain it. And for those who want to “gift Buffalo,” there are Buffalo Baskets, full of WNY products like Buffalo wing sauce, sponge candy, and Weber’s mustard. “Those are great to give to guests from out of town, send to relatives, or give as hostess gifts,” suggests Green. “And our in-house granola has been immensely popular. We make about ten to fifteen pounds a day, and it often sells out. That makes a great gift, too.” This holiday shopping season, don’t let “hard to buy for” or “has everything” cause any stress. With a few local stops at these wonderful shops, you’ll cross off every name with time left to watch It’s A Wonderful Life or A Christmas Story. After all, you deserve a little jingle in your holly jolly, too. Rebecca Cuthbert lives, writes, and cares for shelter dogs in Dunkirk. She is a frequent contributor to Spree.

All the right moves: financial advice from the pros BY REBECCA CUTHBERT
E
very financial planner has the same advice: start saving as soon as you can. “The sooner you start planning the better,” says Christopher Shafer, senior vice president and branch director of RBC Wealth Management in Williamsville. “Waiting too long to start a plan and begin to save is a mistake.” “Save right out of college, even if it’s twenty-five or ten dollars a paycheck,” says Terrie Benson Murray, partner at Cohen & Lombardo PC in Buffalo. “And have it taken right out every week or month automatically; if it goes into the same account, it’s going to be spent like everything else.” “The main thing is to get started and to keep making progress,” offers Jeffrey Hahn, certified financial planner with S. C. Parker & Co. Inc. in Williamsville. “Establish your spending practices early, address your obligations early and rigorously.”

Put away the plastic
It seems like common sense to avoid excessive debt, but credit card debt has a way of sneaking up, even on those with the best intentions. “Bad decisions and spending practices leading to excessive debt and high interest rates on top of it,” is the biggest drain on an adult’s financial resources, warns Hahn. “Be wise about what you purchase; know what you expect and what it costs you,” Shafer says. “Don’t allow your emotions to govern your decision making. Don’t panic and don’t get euphoric, and don’t accumulate excessive credit card debt.” “And,” puts in Benson Murray, “interest rates are going up again. Look at that interest and think how it could all go into your [savings] account instead.” If the damage has been done, meet with a financial planner ASAP and make a plan to aggressively pay down

the debt. Parents, teach your teens and young adult children about effective budgeting and using credit wisely, recommends Shafer. Set them up to succeed by forming a plan before they go off to college—before they are swallowed by education loan repayment. “Handling student debt is something of a mission for my firm. It is actually a huge, national economic situation that is trending toward a crisis. The solution is different for everyone and may be something to get the whole family team involved with, possibly grandparents included,” says Hahn. Tip for new parents: Set up college accounts now, before your kids are even out of diapers. For birthdays, ask for contributions instead of toys, and look into a 529 college savings plan. They’ll thank you later!
Plan for emergencies
It only takes one unexpected event to sideline what you thought was a “good enough” financial plan. While you can’t predict the future, you can build a little cushion to fall back on when misfortune knocks you down. “Even if you’re young and healthy,” says Benson Murray, “make sure you have your paperwork in order. Do you have a power of attorney? Health care proxy? A will? Name someone to be in charge, even if you think you don’t have much. If you’re in the hospital, make sure your affairs are being taken care of—that the bills are being paid.”
According to Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management Advisor Christopher Williams, setting up trusts can be the answer for those who want to make sure their loved ones are cared for, no matter what. “Trusts help you ensure that your assets are managed according to your wishes and passed to your beneficiaries intact,” he explains. “As part of a tax strategy, trusts can also be used to help you keep more of the assets you’ve worked so hard to accumulate.” Tr usts exist in many different forms. Discuss with your financial planner which works best for you and
Take advantage of opportunities
If your company offers retirement plans, sign up, even if you’ve worked there for years and have never done so. “Start investing, take advantage of your company’s 401(k), particularly if there is a matching contribution,” says Shafer. And if there is a match, says Hahn, “Start contributing, hopefully around ten percent, but enough to get your full match at a minimum. Also, look to establish monthly investment plans putting money into a Roth IRA or regular investment account. Systematic monthly investment plans are the most effective way for people to create a substantial portfolio over time. It’s one of the few activities in life when the passage of time is our friend.” However, Shafer warns, don’t count on anyone else to secure your financial future. “Your welfare is your responsibility,” he says. “Talk to a financial advisor about what amount is appropriate for you.” Another note: take a hard look at the withholdings on your paycheck. “Make sure [your employer] isn’t withholding too much, or too little,” says Benson Murray. “You don’t want to owe anything in taxes at the end of the year, but you don’t want to wait and get a big return, either. Think about it; why should the government sit with your money for all that time? It could be in your savings accounts, earning interest. And, when you don’t have enough disposable income throughout the year, that’s when you can get into trouble with credit cards.”

your family’s needs, as “being ready” will vary from one individual to the next. “The best thing I can tell clients is to prepare for the unexpected and expected. For instance, have an emergency fund, make sure you have health insurance, consider future obligations,” says Shafer. “Strive to have about six months of expenditures saved and not touched,” adds Hahn. And while that may seem difficult, think back to the “little at a time” savings plan. Even ten dollars a week adds up.
Get a move on
A plan is only good when you put it into action. Everyone’s financial situation is different, and the most important thing is to get started—today. Meet with a qualified professional and set goals. And, if you haven’t examined your financial plan lately, dust it off and look again. Reevaluation is key to making sure the advice you got years ago still holds true. “Our circumstances and lives are unique,” says Hahn. “The advice we provide is based on a thorough understanding of people’s/families’ circumstances and their individual financial goals and objectives.” Williams agrees; at Northwestern Mutual, he says, planners know it’s

vital “to ensure your investment strategy is aligned with your goals, time horizon, and tolerance for risk.” Even if you feel you’ve missed the mark, “Anything is better than doing nothing,” Shafer states. “Talk to a financial professional. Education is the key to dealing with any situation. Your financial stability is directly linked to what you know.” A financial planner will also help you form a multipronged approach to your future, so that various aspects like debt, retirement, and long-term care are addressed. “Effective financial and life planning cannot be achieved by relying on one technique,” says Shafer. “And putting all your eggs in one basket isn’t prudent. One word: diversify.” Call one of these professionals today and make an appointment. Then, gather any requested information—bank statements, pay stubs, tax forms, monthly bills, legal papers, etc.—and put it in a folder to bring with you. Once you’ve formed a plan that works for your circumstances and personal goals, pat yourself on the back. You’re on your way to a more stable financial future. Beautiful, healthy teeth to last a lifetime By Terri Parsell Hilmey
The early years
“Life is short. Smile while you still have teeth.” – Mallory Hopkins ou’ve heard it before: your teeth Y should last a lifetime. But much of that “should” is up to you; you don’t want to look back in your seventies and wish you’d done the necessary things that could have kept your teeth and gums healthy. So, while it’s not too late, come to the understanding that there is time, effort, and expense involved in caring for your and your children’s teeth, from orthodontic care to maintenance to addressing dental emergencies in a timely fashion—and commit to it.
Your children will get some dental presentations at school, but it’s your example they’ll follow as they mature. They need to floss and brush twice daily—and, for a while, they’re going to need reminders and some supervision to be sure they’re doing it properly. They also need to see you brushing and flossing, and hear you talk about its importance. Finally, they need to see the dentist twice a year. Make sure they know that you’re going, too; maybe you can even make your appointments together. That six-month checkup should become routine. But what if your little angel has a snaggle-toothed smile? “Many kids need a little bit of straightening,” says Dr. Amy Richter, an orthodontist who practices out of five Western New York locations. “And it’s best to
do it when their jaws are growing. We can see the changes fairly quickly, with the alignment of the teeth, but we’re also looking for form and function. We want to create a good bite for them, so they not only have a beautiful smile, but they’re able to take in all of the proper nutrition without avoiding certain kinds of foods because of discomfort.” And orthodontia is not just for kids. Advances in technology mean that what used to take four years can now be accomplished in two and a half, and prices have stayed fairly stable for years. With Invisalign, or clear braces, adults can improve their bite or smile, “I have several patients in the office in their sixties,” says Dr. Richter. “They want their teeth to look nice, but they also want to have the proper functioning; they want to be able to keep their teeth clean, which can be difficult when teeth are touching one another, or overlapping. And, they want to bite into an apple or a stick of celery.”
Maintaining healthy teeth into adulthood
In your twenties and thirties, it’s important to maintain good habits, even amid a busy lifestyle, career, and perhaps family. Use a soft tooth www.buffalospree.com

brush, electric or manual, and brush in an up-and-down fashion, holding the brush at an angle to your gums. Brushing keeps gums healthy and can prevent them from receding. If your gums are red, sensitive, or bleed when you brush or floss, see your dentist; gingivitis and receding gums can lead to cardiovascular disease, infections, and tooth loss. But remember, your relationship with your dentist should still include routine treatments and cleanings twice a year. What if you’re a Nervous Nelly about going to the dentist? It’s very,
very common. If you didn’t become accustomed to dental visits as a child, you might feel uncomfortable with your teeth and/or dental care, and fear sitting in a dentist’s chair. Westermeier Martin Dental Care, with offices in East Aurora and Amherst, understands dental anxiety. The entire practice is geared toward alleviating that anxiety, beginning with a staff trained in comforting and pampering to provide a good experience. The stated goal is gentle, rapid, and pain-free dental care while patients enjoy a spalike experience, with luxuries ranging
from neck pillows, warm aromatherapy facial towels after treatment, and even hand and foot massages during long appointments.
The golden years
If you’ve maintained regular dental visits, you’re already ahead of the game and will continue to be on top of things as they occur. If you begin to experience dry mouth, which can cause gum problems, use over-thecounter sprays and mouthwash, and carry a bottle of water. Your mouth needs constant lubrication; don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Medications can also affect oral health. Whenever you start or stop a new medication or change dosage, note any unusual tastes or mouth dryness. And keep your dentist apprised of medications and any g eneral health changes; certain conditions can require preventative treatment— like an antibiotic—before dental procedures.

issue that needs immediate attention. To allay your own concerns and/or jumpstart your new oral care routine, do some research. Knowledge is power, and it’s also very calming; nothing is ever as bad as your fruitful imagination can create. Go to some of the great websites, like mouthhealthy.org, from the American Dental Association, where you can check your symptoms, and find a dentist in your area.
