time to up your beauty game! BY TERRI PARSELL HILMEY

“Love of beauty is taste. The creation of beauty is art.” –Ralph Waldo Emerson

fter a summer in the sunshine (with or without sunscreen— naughty, naughty), your hair and your skin can use tender loving care, which makes fall the perfect time to explore treatments and hydration to repair summer damage and prepare for winter. With today’s fabulous products and procedures, there’s no need to fear the knife or needle, as many topical treatments yield results without the invasiveness. More, our local beauty providers can usually get you back to your life with little to no downtime—a plus if fall for you also means a return to crazy kid routines. Relaxation is hard to come by, so treating yourself to luxurious resort-caliber experiences, either alone or with friends, can help you destress, recharge, and achieve the balance that makes life run more smoothly. If needles scare you, the microneedle—considered one of the hottest innovations in the beauty industry— might be a little less frightening. Microneedling is a medical

procedure that uses fine needles to create hundreds of tiny, invisible puncture wounds in the top layer of skin, and improves the look of scars, wrinkles (around the eyes, mouth), photo-aging of the hands and neck, lax skin, stretch marks, and overall skin texture, leaving you with a healthy glow. In other words, it gets your skin doing the things it’s not doing anymore, creating collagen and elastin, by giving it a bit of exercise. Also available with no downtime, no redness, and no irritation are Excuria’s Signature Facials, with custom-blended cleansers, masques, and moisturizers, preceded by exfoliation (which aids in cell turnover). “We use the Eminence Organic skin care line,” says Nicole Schreck, aesthetician at Excuria. “We can customize it to what your concerns are and what’s going on with your skin at that moment. Then we hook up hydro wands to our Diamondtome™ machine and fill them with the appropriate hydrating serum for that client’s needs. It allows deeper penetration of the serum into your skin, giving you those instant results.” The crystal-free treatment can reduce signs of aging, effectively

targeting specific skin conditions and improving the overall health of your skin, which produces the best complexion. It also helps correct summer damage and moisturizes in preparation for dry winter. Radiofrequency technology is also noninvasive and heats the deep layers of the skin, stimulating the production of new collagen in the face, including the skin around the eyes. Niagara Dermatology Associates uses Pellevé, based on the older Thermage treatments, but improved by better technology and equipment. “Electricity is used to generate heat to cause what isn’t an injury, but what your skin perceives as a thermal injury,” says Dr. Anne Ramsdell at Niagara Dermatology. “It doesn’t hurt—it actually feels like a warm massage— but it encourages your body to generate healing in the area, creating a tightening of the skin, and builds collagen to reduce fine lines and wrinkles.” The best part of this treatment is that there is virtually no downtime, and the results are immediate and even tend to improve over the next few days. If the texture of your skin has you contemplating microdermabrasion, or you’ve just decided to take your skin seriously, research physician-level machines, as opposed to the aesthetician models you find at most spas. You may want your skin analyzed, to identify damage not yet visible. “It takes me an hour and fifteen minutes to do a microdermabrasion, because I cleanse their skin, then put it under magnification first, and then under a Wood’s Lamp,” says Linda Baldi-Perry, owner of Spa Niagara. A Wood’s Lamp is a small handheld device that uses black light to identify certain bacteria or fungi, or changes in the pigmentation; these affected areas appear differently colored under the light. “I can see what’s going on underneath,” says Baldi-Perry, “so, based on the colors that I see, I know where they may have excess oil, severe dehydration, and even sun damage that isn’t visible yet.” After treatment, blackheads and whiteheads come out and a customdesigned mask is put on for ten to fifteen minutes, followed by application of custom-chosen products. On each return visit, Baldi-Perry evaluates progress and makes changes based on how the skin is improving. “It’s going to reduce pore size, even out skin tone, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and reduce the appearance of scars,” she says. “The texture you can achieve is second to none.” Summer decreases collagen and www.buffalospree.com

elastin production, and Atrium Spa’s Valerie Fyke recommends two things to get rid of the sun-exposed layers, target any sun spots that may have formed, and go deeper to regenerate your skin cells. “If you use peels, alpha hydroxy acid or beta hydroxy acid, you can avoid microdermabrasion and have a more gentle treatment while achieving the same results,” she says. “These peels are naturally occurring AHAs and BHAs, so they’re not as invasive as the stronger chemical peels, which essentially wound the skin so it has to repair itself.” Another signature treatment that Atrium offers is the Botinol facial, which gives the same results as Botox, but without the needle. Instead, innovative peptides encourage production of collagen and elastin, and trick the skin into smothing wrinkles just like Botox would. It targets deeper expression lines and wrinkles with Retinol, Alphalipoic Acid, Matrixyl (a peptide) and Argireline (also a peptide), to turn back time. It cannot be overstated that, try as you might, you will not achieve the same results with over-the-counter products as you will professional products. Laurie Incorvaia is a registered nurse and medical spa director under the auspices of Dr. Andrew Giacobbe, board-certified plastic surgeon. It offers all of the traditional services of a medical spa, as well as the services only a trained surgeon can provide, and their own line of products. “We just customized our Radiance anti-aging and repairing kit, with seven pieces in the kit, to offer cleansing, toning, exfoliating, moisturizing, and a few other pieces that are really special and incredibly effective,” Incorvaia says. The office has also introduced a four-piece Clear Care kit for highly effective acne treatment. Tom Akers, at Renew Bath and Body, believes that maintaining skin with effective products is a lot easier than getting a facelift when you’re sixty. “I got really interested in ingredient searching when I started my passion for natural skin care, because natural is as effective as chemical, and is better for you” say Akers. “Before anything comes into our shop—skin products, makeup lines—we research it, and then bring in samples and test it on ourselves.” Renew Bath and Body offers skin care lines, an inhouse aesthetician and makeup artist, and some really interesting makeup lines; one organic, two natural, and one mineral-based. It’s also recently embraced the craze for a great eyebrow line. “We searched high and low

for the best one we could find, and our customers are crazy for it,” says Akers. Staff trains on products every Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon, and there are currently twenty-four product lines, with more on the way, including Juice from Gwyneth Paltrow’s line. In-store classes for clients are free; clients RSVP and are treated to a live teleconference with the creator of the skin care line being highlighted. Women’s Medicine of Niagara offers traditional services, such as laser hair removal, fractional ablation, and skin resurfacing with a CO2 laser, and wanted to add a skin care line to complement them. “We offer Rodan + Fields skin care line because it was also designed by doctors,” says Dr. Donna Feldman of Women’s Medicine of Niagara. “Pretty much everybody in our office was using the products, so we decided to offer it to our patients, because we recommend quality skin care lines that enhance the services that we provide. Rodan + Fields has those products that specifically aid in the reduction of redness and inflammation, as well as further the results of the services.” Next up is your hair, which may also have gotten little protection from the summer sun. While sun bleaching might look pretty, it represents damage: an opening up of the cuticle, and drying out of the shaft. Once winter comes, your scalp may dry as well. What seems like dandruff might simply indicate a need for scalp treatment to exfoliate and hydrate skin that, with all that hair, can be hard to get to. At Michele for Hair, Aveda pramāsana™ scalp and hair treatment is designed to create that healthy scalp. “We br ush the hair and scalp through,” says owner Michelle Griffasi. “Then there is a cleansing shampoo and massage to exfoliate and remove dead skin, to help the scalp breathe and be healthy. And then we do a conditioning treatment to lock in the results, and protect the scalp and hair from that point forward.” As your face does, the scalp needs moisture, especially if it’s going to provide a healthy foundation for hair growth. Healthy hair grows from a healthy scalp, and healthy hair is beautiful hair. A timesaver at Corto’s Salon & Seasons Spa’s Hamburg location is the blow dry bar. “This is for women on their way to work,” say Peggy Corto, “because we have appointments as early as 7 a.m., or on their way out for the evening.” Make an appointment, or just walk in; a blow

dry takes thirty-five to forty-five minutes, and the client is also treated to Corto’s brand-new décor and luxurious client chairs. “It feels like an indulgence,” says Corto, “and you’re not cheating on your hair dresser by getting your blow dry.” Sometimes a good blow dry can last two or three days, depending on your hair. There has been a lot of focus lately on the damages of overwashing, so Corto’s also offers a line of products to keep your hair fresh and your blow out intact, so that you don’t have to wash it every day. Lovely dry shampoos fluff and refresh the hair without the pulling, soap, and drying that comes with everyday washing. Sparse spots in the eyelash line can be annoying, but one of the hottest things right now are individual fake eyelashes, versus the glue-on, strip variety. Capello I LLC has embraced this procedure and found that customers love the way they blend with natural lashes. “The individual lashes are attached to their actual lashes,” says Capello’s Tara Dailey, “and you can come in and have the full set done in Natural style, Elegant style, or Luxurious style, depending on your preference, and then come in periodically for fill-ins.” The lash extension process is a luxury treatment, during which a licensed technician places a semipermanent synthetic mink lash on each individual lash with a physician-formulated glue. These are not to be confused with strip or cluster lashes that you might have used at home. All of Capello’s lash technicians are either licensed cosmetologists or aestheticians and are educated and trained to perform the procedure. “It saves you time,” says Dailey,” because you don’t have to put them on every day like mascara or regular false eyelashes. You do it once, then have a touch up every two to four weeks.” When you have a little more me time, Ellicottville Salt Cave is a soothing Zen-like place to re-energize and catch your breath, literally. Inhaling salt air is invigorating, and, as you relax in gravity chairs, your massage takes place in a room made of salt tiles to continue the experience. “We do a lot of group parties, bachelorette parties,” says Tracy Draper. “Our weekends are usually booked with parties, because it’s a nice destination, and we put special packages of services together for groups, so that they can enjoy a minimum of four treatments. Each person picks services, including the salt cave, and perhaps an infrared sauna, or an upper body

massage.” Salon Allure Salon & Day Spa is a full Aveda salon that has just completed an expansion. It has natural products, derived from plants and flowers, and uses organic scents in all of them. “For every service we offer,” says Maria Muscarella, “even in the salon, we offer Aveda rituals, like a lovely hand massage, or a scalp massage, and even a finishing touch of makeup. We want our clients to experience five-star service.” At Salon Allure, clients choose the oil and scent for their five-minute

scalp and shoulder massages before they get their hair cut (a complete sensory journey). The “BMW of pedicures” again includes the client’s choice of scent and product, as well as a spa lunch, keratin treatments, and a huge menu of beauty services, with added bits of relaxation with every procedure. The Woodhouse Spa has more than 6,000 square feet of space, four facial rooms, and seven massage rooms. “We consider it a form of mental and physical health care, because we know how stress can cause physical and

THREE SIMPLE STEPS THAT CAN HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR FINANCIAL GOALS (StatePoint) Americans have mixed emotions around financial planning, a new study suggests. But setting specific goals can help you achieve the financial outcomes you want. Fortyeight percent of individuals with specific financial goals say they expect to be in a much better place in the next four years, versus only 12 percent of those without goals. The study, “2017 Financial Focus: Goals and Reflections of Today’s Consumer,” conducted by Lincoln

128

November 2017

Financial Group, found that while Americans have a desire to retire comfortably and support loved ones, there is a fear factor involved in actually saving for these financial needs. Staying grounded and focused is a good first step, say experts. “Those individuals who are progressing with their goals are first and foremost working to ensure they have a solid foundation to build upon,” said Dick Mucci, President of Group Benefits at Lincoln Financial Group.

“While it might not be exciting, putting extra money toward things like debt, savings or insurance coverage certainly pays off in the long run, particularly if something unexpected happens.” The study also looked at progress in achieving New Year’s Resolutions—and 72 percent of Americans are doing pretty well. Those who say they are progressing with their 2017 resolutions in some way are those who are most likely to leverage

financial products, such as retirement plans, life insurance, and investment accounts. This group also tends to make reducing debt a priority and avoids sacrificing savings when money is tight—instead they sacrifice the extras, such as vacations. Here are some effective goal-setting strategies to help you plan for your financial future. • Be specific. When you make vague goals, it can be difficult to measure progress. When goal-setting, get as specific as possible, both with the goals themselves and the steps you will take to succeed. • Prioritize your goals. Once you set a goal, make it the last thing you compromise in your budget, whether that is paying down debt, saving for a rainy day, or retirement planning. Money tight this month? Skip a luxury item that’s not working toward your goals. • Take a breath. Thinking about your financial situation and potential circumstances that could arise can be emotional. But taking practical steps to improve your situation can offer peace of mind as you face the future. “Putting the right financial plans and protections in place can help alleviate some financial fears,” says Mucci. “An employer-sponsored retirement plan is a great place to build savings, and insurance coverages offered through the workplace can help protect against the financial challenges that could come with an unexpected injury or illness.” More financial planning tips and information can be found at LincolnFinancial.com. By setting attainable goals that you can realistically meet, you can get a handle on your finances and better plan for the future.

Why More Americans Should be Talking about Retirement (StatePoint) More than half of Gen X-ers and 40 percent of Baby Boomers have never given advice to their children about planning for retirement, according to a new study from North American Company for Life and Health Insurance. One retirement industry leader says that this lack of discussion about money matters can have a big impact on the future of savings. “Even when Americans are talking about retirement with their children, it’s clear from this study that their advice is vague,” said Ann Hughes, chief distribution officer. “The first step in helping the next generation succeed financially could come from simply and clearly sharing what you’ve learned from your mistakes.” Baby Boomers reported spending money on things they didn’t need, going into too much debt, and not

130

November 2017

www.buffalospree.com

saving for retirement when they were young. That’s not what they talked about with their kids, though, according to the study. And with even more Gen X-ers saying they regret spending and accumulating debt than previous generations, they may be on course to repeat their parents’ mistakes. Boomers and Gen X-ers share similar financial fears, according to the study. About 66 percent of Baby Boomers admit they are concerned about outliving their retirement savings. Gen X-ers are even more fearful—77 percent report the same concern. These fears may stem in part from the fact that many Gen X-ers are getting squeezed—with nearly a fifth of this “sandwich” generation supporting their parents and 71 percent supporting children.

To ensure your savings can last a lifetime, start by assessing your current retirement strategy, including benefits such as Social Security and any other income streams. Then look at your future financial needs. You may also wish to investigate options such as a fixed index annuity, which can help protect your nest egg from market volatility and generate steady lifetime income. While the survey results suggest a growing participation in parents’ retirement planning, there is clearly room for improvement in communication on these subjects. “All too often, money becomes a taboo topic or a source of embarrassment,” Hughes said. “Making time for these discussions can help encourage each generation to avoid making the same mistakes their parents did and plan better for the future.”

Maintaining dental health By James “Bo” Catanese, Pharm.D.

ew people enjoy trips to the dentist. Just thinking about the grinding, scraping, and polishing of even regular cleanings is enough to make some people squirm. But while dental experiences can be unpleasant, regular checkups are critical to oral health. We often think of oral health as isolated to the mouth and teeth, but oral health is linked to overall health as well. Poor oral hygiene can, of course, lead to issues like tooth decay and gum disease, but it may also lead to cardiovascular disease, endocarditis, and premature birth. Conversely, common diseases, such as diabetes and osteoporosis, can cause oral health issues. Additionally, common medications—antihistamines, diuretics, and decongestants,

e.g.—can have a negative impact on oral health factors like saliva production. This makes it important for everyone to take oral health seriously. What preventative steps can we take to maintain oral health? The first is easy: brushing at least twice a day to remove acid build up from the breakdown of food, and thus preserve the protective enamel that coats the teeth. Brush thoroughly, and make contact with all surfaces. If brushing after each meal isn’t always possible, rinse with water to help wash away food particles. Recent research has called into question the benefits of flossing, but it certainly isn’t harmful to floss at least once daily. As with other aspects of health, what we ingest plays a

large role in oral health. Avoid tobacco use, which can increase the chance of periodontal disease, tooth loss, cavities, mouth pain, and more. Sugar can wear the enamel of the teeth, so limit soda and juice. Getting enough calcium is also essential to tooth maintenance. Finally, bite the bullet and see your dentist regularly. Not only are routine checkups essential for maintaining hygiene, but they also identify cavities and other problems before they become difficult (and expensive) to treat. Visit the dentist at least twice per year, or the event of any tooth or jaw pain. Many oral health issues—cavities and root canals, e.g.—are limited to treatment at the dentist’s office, but, as a pharmacist, I also treat oral health difficulties. One of the most common complaints is dry mouth. This can result from medication, disease states, or improper diet. Staying hydrated is key to addressing dry mouth, but, sometimes, it’s not enough. In those cases, patients can benefit from over the counter products, such as Lubricity™, a topical spray used after each meal. For stubborn cases, medications that stimulate salivary production, such as pilocarpine, can be made in dosage forms like lozenges or lollipops. Sucking on the lozenge or lollipop increases saliva production, while avoiding side effects in the rest of the body. Oral lesions are another condition we see often. Canker sores and the like can be extremely painful, and interfere with quality of life. These conditions can result from stress, diet, or other illnesses, and can be stubborn to treat. Some of the best treatments for these are medicated mouth rinses that combine multiple drug classes, such as steroids, antibiotics, antifungals, and anesthetics, into one rinse. Rothwell’s or Magic Mouthwash, to name two, are swished around to coat the sores, soothe irritation, and speed healing. Sometimes, we see “bur ning mouth syndrome,” which is just what it sounds like: a tingling or burning sensation throughout the mouth. Patients experiencing this may benefit from over-the-counter supplements like lipoic acid, which can alleviate nerve sensation. Difficult-to-treat cases might benefit from medications, such as clonazepam and capsaicin in rinse or lozenge form. These serve to numb overactive nerves, and provide patient relief. These specialty medications and supplements can be found at pharmacies that specialize in vitamin

supplementation and the art of compounding, such as Pine Pharmacy in Williamsville. Following proper oral hygiene and addressing dental issues in a timely fashion will keep your mouth clean and healthy, and stop it from affecting other aspects of your health. Remember, there is a reason root canals are used as metaphor for unpleasantness, so do your best to prevent them! James “Bo” Catanese, Pharm.D. is a pharmacist at Pine Pharmacy
