Wedding quandary: tech or tradition? BY REBECCA CUTHBERT

When it comes to wedding planning, dress, color scheme, and menu decisions are the same as ever, but when it comes to music, invitations, and registries, brides and grooms now have techier alternatives to consider. And the choices aren’t always easy, given that both traditional and tech options have advantages.

Band or DJ?

Great music can keep a party moving, while humdrum tunes can have guests stifling yawns by 9p.m. While bands and DJs remain popular

choices, creating a wedding playlist and streaming from a device is now a viable alternative. In choosing, couples should factor in budget, personal taste, and ambiance, as making the right decision means prioritizing these items. Consider what you want and how much your budget can afford, knowing that the higher you go, the less you’ll have for other wedding needs. Borrowed & Blue’s (borrowedandblue.com) Audra Jones, in “Bands v. DJs: Which Is Right for Your Wedding?” notes that “wedding bands are,

on average, significantly more expensive, typically running from $3,000 [to] $10,000.” Check local and new bands, too; their costs may be significantly less. “Few things can energize a crowd quite like live music,” says Jones. “There’s just something about the beat of the drum and the energy of the musicians that puts everyone in a good mood and gets feet tapping!” Live musicians are also great when you’re going for an overall wedding theme or mood. Roaring Twenties wedding? Island luau? Cinderella’s ball? No problem. Most musicians will even dress the part to add flair to the evening. And, Jones notes, even folks who don’t dance enjoy a live show. For more varied sound, or to hear songs as recorded by your favorite artists, a DJ fits the bill. You can provide playlists, as well as specific instructions: e.g., do not play the “Chicken Dance” no matter how many times www.buffalospree.com

your second cousin requests it. If your venue is small, consider that a DJ’s equipment likely takes less space than a band. DJs are more affordable than bands, and can take breaks without leaving the party sans music. Band or DJ, do your homework. Don’t sign a contract until you’ve checked out a performance or event. Pay attention to how they read a crowd; they should know when it’s time to pick up the tempo and when to pull back for a cozy slow dance. Also make sure you get along; whoever provides your music should understand the vibe you want for your special day. Hooking up your own device and streaming music for the reception is by far the most affordable route, but preplanning is critical. Do you need WiFi? Are the speakers at the venue adequate, or do you need to bring or rent your own? Is someone capable in charge of setting it up? Remember that a dead battery, glitchy reception, or a forgotten cable could mean no music at all. Do a test run—do two— and have backup to avoid mishaps.

When considering paper vs. electronic invitations, it again comes down to budget and preference. E-vites are much less expensive—often pennies on the dollar, in comparison—and there’s no additional cost for postage. When you hit “send,” off they go, and replies come back just as fast. Some wedding apps will even keep track of responses for you, which makes planning a snap. But, as Eliana Dockterman highlights in Time’s (time.com) “With This App, I Thee Wed,” “Going high-tech sometimes means sacrificing formality. Even the most beautiful online invitations can send a more casual message.” She then quotes Jacqueline Whitmore, an etiquette expert who says invitations set the tone for the wedding: “If you get a beautifully engraved invitation in the mail where someone took the time and money to hire a calligrapher, that notes the wedding is much more formal. If you send out an e-vite, that sends another message. Maybe the wedding is less formal.” If you or a friend have some skills, a cost-saving in-between option is designing your own invitations, and printing them at home. Also consider how you want to save mementos of your big day. E-vites can be added to a wedding website or online album, whereas paper invitations can be framed or pasted into a wedding scrapbook.

“Stuff” or money?

The old gift registry debate—is it impersonal to provide a preselected list of “gifts”?—has been replaced by a new one: does the couple ask for gifts from the registry or contributions toward a honeymoon, house, or (gulp) paying down student loan debt. Registering for “wrappable” gifts can be a lot of fun—browsing through your favorite store with a scanning gun that makes you feel like a superhero, or sitting with a laptop, clicking all the kitchen gadgets and throw pillows—but if your apartment is a studio, your cooking skills max out at pouring cereal, you can’t imagine ever needing a linen napkin (monogrammed or otherwise), and you’d really like to go to Hawaii, money might seem a lot more practical. Linda Marx, for the New York Times, claims in “Passing on Wedding Gifts, Millennials Prefer Cash,” while it was once considered tacky to ask for money, younger generations are changing the etiquette. “When it comes to registering for gifts, a generational sea change has developed, with more and more millennial couples asking their guests to consider holding the gravy ladles and shelving the dishes in favor of gifts of a very different sort,” says Marx, who says they prefer “cash, home-repair gift cards, and lavish honeymoon experiences.” But it’s not just twentysomethings who don’t want crystal and china. Couples who get married later in life may already have all they need— hutches and silverware drawers are full, houses are furnished, and walls are decorated. So, gifting an experience may be more appreciated. Many registry websites have buttons guests can click to fund honeymoon trips: e.g., they can buy the newlyweds a whale watch tour, a salsa dancing lesson, or tickets to a show. As Marx says, “The wedding-gift concept has morphed into doing what makes the couple happy.” That may mean a new blender, or not. Whatever you choose, remember your manners. Give guests different price options, so those with less disposable income can still contribute. And, if Aunt Gert gives you a slow cooker you didn’t ask for, tell her it’s just what you needed, and try making some chili cheese dip in it. You’ll never be sorry you did. Honey moon planning made simple BY RONALD LUCZAK

Just like the wedding, a couple wants their honeymoon to be perfect. And, just like the wedding, that means proper planning. Here are a few tips to ensure that first week as newlyweds is fun and stress-free: Interview travel consultants: It is important to establish a relationship with a travel industry professional who understands your needs, and whom you both like—that could take more than one try. If you’ve already chosen a destination, verify that the travel consultant has been there recently. If you haven’t decided yet, it’s even more important that you connect with the travel advisor, so that you’ll trust their recommendations. Establish a budget: Don’t make the honeymoon an expense you’ll regret, or, worse, go into debt over. Start a honeymoon fund early, and plan within that budget. While many travel companies will create a honeymoon registry that allows wedding guests to contribute honeymoon expenses, that’s not something to rely on, and you also don’t want to be broke as you start your life together. Planning process: It’s never too early to start dreaming. Start honeymoon talk as soon as you get engaged; you don’t have to wait until a date is set. Once you have a date, decide if

Determine your interests: This isn’t the vacation to try something just to “see if you like it,” so don’t, for example, book a ski trip if you’ve never skied; your honeymoon is no time to create new anxiety. Examine your own interests—beach, culinary, sports, camping, glamping—and choose accordingly.

you want to honeymoon immediately after; many couples today are taking a mini post-wedding honeymoon, and planning a major trip once they’ve recovered from the excitement. If possible, avoid mid-April, when higher spring break pricing will prevail and airline availability is limited. Also avoid Thanksgiving week and government holidays.

Get on the same page: Do you want to visit a new place or return to a favorite? How do you anticipate spending this time—relaxing on the beach or sightseeing? Read travel magazines, and ask friends where they’ve gone. Make individual wish lists of what your ideal honeymoon will include, then see where you have matches, and start investigating. Here are some ideas to get you started: Hawaii: If you have a minimium of ten days and an ample budget, the islands of Hawaii are filled with romance and adventure. Hotel and restaurant options are available in all price ranges, and the many “insider access activities” will make a memorable trip. Cruises: Many honeymooners select cruising because of ease and cost control. All meals and accommodations are included, and some cruise lines include wine at dinner or alcoholic beverage packages. Higher end cruises also include shore excursions. Some top recommendations are Holland America, Crystal Cruises, Celebrity Cruises, Silversea Cruises, and Oceania Cruises. River Cruises: European river cruises offer great deals with interesting itineraries. AMA River Cruises, Viking River Cruises, and Uniworld

River Cruises are favorites. All- Inclusive: For a luxury honeymoon with no hidden costs, Sandals Resorts or AMResorts/Secrets are your go-to. If you go elsewhere, and aren’t interested in a property that caters to families, be sure to select one that is adults-only. Caribbean Islands or Mexico Bermuda: A perfect island to visit if you’re honeymooning during summer or fall. Bermuda exudes British charm and sophisticated formality. The Princess Hotels, The Reefs, and Elbow Beach are favorites. St Lucia: This island is famous for lush, green mountains and serene beaches. Try the new Royalton Resort or St. James Club Morgan Bay, both highly rated. Cancun Riviera Maya: Cancun has it all. Excellence Resorts or Secrets Maroma are top choices. Big Cities: New York, Charleston, Savannah, Las Vegas, Toronto, Paris, France, and Reykjavik, Iceland, etc. all can provide excitement. Icelandiair now offers a fare that allows you to visit Reykjavik, then continue to European locales serviced by the airline. Tahiti & Fiji: For an exotic honeymoon, Tahiti and Fiji offer over-thewater bungalows and the ability to visit more than one island. Bora Bora: One of the more luxurious and expensive honeymoon destinations, Bora Bora epitomizes romance. Most activities are waterrelated with breathtaking sunset cruises along the lagoon. This is a special trip, so savor every moment of the anticipation! Ronald Luczak is vice president of The Travel Team, Inc.

Tips to Prevent Slips, Trips, and Falls (StatePoint) Slips, trips, and falls that cause injury and death are all too common, and they disproportionately affect older people. Indeed, one-third of older US adults suffer falls each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. What’s more, a fear of falling can alter habits, negatively impacting one’s quality of life. Fortunately, many such falls are highly preventable. Changes in vision, balance, and muscle strength that can occur as one ages can be addressed, and other external risk factors can be prevented. Staying Vital Regular exercise is important for maintaining the physical strength and mobility needed to reduce the risk of

falls. Taking classes to improve balance, such as tai chi, has also been shown to reduce the risk of falls. Many community centers and fitness clubs offer classes designed for older individuals, so be sure to consult your healthcare provider for an exercise routine that is appropriate for you. “Set a reminder to get regular health screenings for bone density, vision, and other fall risk factors. Staying aware of these physical changes and adapting to them can help you remain healthy and independent,” says Carrie Nie, director, Safe Communities America, National Safety Council. Home Modifications “Most falls happen at home, so it’s important for individuals, caregivers,

and loved ones to focus on keeping the home free of safety hazards that increase the likelihood of falls,” says Nie. Installing grab bars, additional handrails, and extra lighting can make it easier to maintain balance, improve vision, and avoid tripping hazards. You should also free walking areas of tripping hazards, such as electrical and phone cords and open drawers and cabinets. To avoid slips, use nonskid rugs, clean up spills immediately, and wear proper footwear. Community Engagement Individuals and loved ones should look into local resources available that can help prevent falls and maintain older adults’ independence, as well as get involved in efforts to make their

community more accessible. Many communities are already engaged in such efforts. For example, counties, cities, towns, and universities accredited by the National Safety Council Safe Communities America program put initiatives into place to raise awareness of the risk of falls and increase older adult independence and safety at the local level. The program also works with volunteer groups to make the homes of older adults safer. For example, one such volunteer group, “Team Handyman,” installs grab bars, hand rails, and other safety features in the homes of older adults in Midland, Michigan. To learn more about fall prevention, as well as community safety efforts, visit nsc.org. While aging itself is not the cause of falls, older people are at greater risk of taking a spill. To reduce your risk of falling, keep your home safe, your body strong, and your community engaged.

When Jill Bronsky began planning exercise programs and wellness workshops for older adults twenty-five years ago, she found that very few personal trainers or fitness instructors would work with elderly people. Everyone was afraid that old people were “too fragile” and could fall or have a heart attack if they moved more than necessary. Over the decades that followed, Bronsky, who holds a master’s degree in physical education, and other experts in the growing fields of aging and eldercare have proven that regular physical activity is not only safe for seniors, but it can actually help prevent the medical emergencies everyone had feared before. As the owner of Forward Fitness in Williamsville and a group fitness instructor, Bronsky specializes in helping elders reduce the likelihood of falls, improve their strength and balance, and hang on to their independence longer simply by encouraging them to move more. In her new book, Keeping Your Parents Active & Independent: Simple Ways

to Encourage Physical Activity and Exercise, Bronsky explains some of reasons why many older people are hesitant to start an exercise program, and what children and caregivers can do to provide encouragement and support. The easy-reading book also includes ideas for adding a little more activity to everyday tasks, and outlines simple exercise routines that can done while seated in a chair or holding on to the back of one for stability. One of the most common obstacles Bronsky sees with starting a fitness program is simply that older people don’t realize they need to make an effort to move more. When many of her clients were young, exercising on purpose wasn’t really part of the culture, especially for women who didn’t grow up with girls’ sports in school. Instead of gym memberships and workout videos, physical activity included walking everywhere because the family probably had one car, gardening and cooking, hanging laundry, cutting the lawn with a reel mower—all things that gradually are removed the to-do list as people age, get help from children and

neighbors, and enter assisted living facilities. And, because the transition away from physical tasks happens slowly, it’s hard to realize how little movement older adults really get in a given day. In her book, Bronsky explores some of the common hesitations she hears about starting an exercise program—“I’m afraid of falling,” “I’m too old,” and, “I don’t know how” —and suggests ways to talk through these valid concerns with elderly parents and their doctors to find ways to safely introduce activity. From there, she provides stepby-step suggestions to ease into the habit of moving more. Ideas include “sneaky” tactics like parking a space or two farther from the front door and walking that extra twelve feet or not automatically doing every little thing for parents (fetching this, reaching that) who may truthfully be able to do it themselves, to more scheduled and purposeful exercises like leg and arm raises or balance drills. Bronsky employs some of these exercises during a series of strength and balance classes she teaches at area

At a recent session held at Elderwood Village Assisted Living Facility in Williamsville, about a dozen residents in their seventies to nineties filed into a recreation room with the help of walkers or on their own and took seats in two crescent-shaped rows of chairs facing Bronsky at the front of the room. Once everyone was settled, the warmup began to the tune of “Runaround Sue.” Arm raises, shoulder taps, and ankle wiggles to the beat of the music got everyone smiling and moving, progressing next to some overhead waves with red, two-pound rubber balls, and then onto some standing movements (toe taps to the side, knee raises) for those who were able, with seated modifications for participants who wished to remain in their chairs, and little breathers in between. Fun and variety are key elements to Bronsky’s classes and the routines she recommends for clients at home. She incorporates anything she can think of to add color and movement like silk scarves, resistance bands, hand weights, and even pool noodles. And, always, music. Disco is a hit for cardio

portions, while softer ballads from the ’50s are great for warm-ups and stretching. “I’ve been doing this so long, I started with a boom box and tapes, then moved up to CDs,” Bronsky quips. “Now, I have wireless speakers and Pandora!” The goal of all of this, Bronsky says, isn’t for seniors to all of a sudden be able to run around the block or lift a ton of weight. Instead, the primary goal is always the comfort and quality of life that comes from staying self-sufficient and safely

enjoying the activities and places that bring people joy. “You can really see the difference when older people start to be more active,” Bronsky says. “Small changes can make a huge difference in their daily life—getting out of the car more easily, bending safely, standing to cook. People think falling, losing balance, and getting weaker are part of getting older. That it’s inevitable. But, it’s simply not true.” Devon Dams-O’Connor is a freelance writer who lives and works out in Buffalo.

Is it worth sending your child to college? BY STEVEN J. HARVEY

Your oldest is in high school, it’s time to start thinking about college, and the first thoughts are often, is it really worth it?” and “Where do I begin?” Most parents, even those working in higher education, get overwhelmed by the notion of finding the “right” college. And that’s without even considering practicalities like the admission process, the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), knowing what’s affordable within one’s means, and trying to get the student invested.

Let’s tackle the literal million-dollar question—“Is college worth it?”; a million dollars is about how much more a college graduate will earn, over a lifetime, compared to a high school graduate. For a two-year degree, it’s about $500,000. Therefore, incomewise, college is worth the investment, but the benefits of a college degree go beyond financial return. According to College Board, a college-educated person reports greater job and life satisfaction. The higher the degree, the lower chance of unemployment (Bureau of Labor Statistics). A wealth of research shows that college graduates are more effective communicators, have fewer health issues, have healthier relationships, live longer, report higher quality of life, and report stronger educational, life, and professional outcomes for their children. Essentially, the argument that the value of a college degree has diminished is weak, and misrepresents these extensive benefits. Once the decision is made, parents and students start grappling with where to go, what to major in, and how to pay for it. It’s helpful to know that most employers report that what is studied is more important than where. In other words, paying for a “name” isn’t as critical to a student’s future as the right major. The chosen college should offer not just a major in your child’s desired field of study, but also a wealth of opportunities, beyond coursework, that expand skills and contribute to a competitive resume. So, how to choose a major? I like to joke with my kids, “Pick the major that will allow you to buy me that summer house on the coast.” As you might imagine, I find that funnier than they do; in fact, my daughter was concerned that I would influence her decision, but I told her, “No one should tell you what to major in. It’s your life, and you will be working for most of it. Pick a major you love, and don’t just work hard, but work smart.” That last part is key. No matter the major your child chooses, there will be thousands of jobs to choose from upon graduation. As a coach, I always told my players, “It’s not just what you do during practice that makes you successful, it’s what you do outside of practice.” The same is true of college. Every college student takes courses, but not every college student, for example, attends academic conferences, pitches or launches a business, authors a published paper with a professor, or is part of a professional

Grades matter, and your child’s coursework and professors play a major role in their development, but there is just as much value in experiences that develop the professional skill set.

association since freshman year. Regardless of major, every college student can do internships, volunteer, join clubs, join professional associations, subscribe to professional journals, seek out mentors, fundraise for non-profits, see speakers, attend professional events, and, most importantly, visit the career services office, which will assist them in doing all of the above. These outside activities help fine tune the job search, develop a strong resume, build a network, and prepare for the knowledge economy. This is more important than ever, as employers are looking for self-directed leaders with demonstrated experiences outside of the classroom. Grades matter, and your child’s coursework and professors play a major role in their development, but there is just as much value in experiences that develop the professional skill set. So, what’s all that going to set you back? Is the cost of a particular college is worth it? For most college graduates, debt is a given. In New York State, the average student debt is just over $29,000 or $333/month debt maintenance (US Department of Education Student Loan Repayment Calculator). This is roughly the cost of a car payment for approximately $700,000 to $1,000,000 return on investment. That’s not a bad return, but debt is debt, so remember what I said above about the major being more important than the college. Also know that most private colleges discount tuitions to levels competitive with public colleges, so don’t rule them out, particularly if your child would thrive at a smaller school. Finally, remember that many fields—teaching, counseling, psychology, or medicine, e.g.—require a master’s degree. If your child’s undergraduate debt is high, there won’t be much wiggle room for grad school, which is arguably the more important investment. Finally, as a parent, you are also transitioning, getting used to “coaching” from a distance, and your child’s success will be aided by acceptance of your new role. I wish you luck and please do the same for me as I currently face this process with my high school senior! Steven J. Harvey is executive director of the WNY Consortium of Higher Education.

Minding women’s health By James “Bo” Catanese, Pharm.D.

ot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, insomnia: these are some symptoms hormones—or lack of them—can wreak on women’s bodies during the premenstrual period, pregnancy, and menopause. But these aren’t the only ways women’s bodies differ from men’s; even in health conditions that affect both sexes, women often have different outcomes from men. While preventative health for all conditions is paramount, there are steps women can take to minimize risk and symptoms of common conditions specific to them. Scheduling an annual gynecologist appointment, having Pap smears and mammograms as advised, exercising, and maintaining a healthy, well-balanced diet are always recommended. But, I’d like to address some complaints I hear as a practicing pharmacist. Far and away, the most troubling condition I hear about from women in my practice is menopause and perimenopause, the period preceding menopause when hormone levels are declining. Reduced hormone production by the ovaries can cause not only the aforementioned hot flashes, insomnia, and mood swings, but also weight gain, decreased libido, vaginal dryness, and memory loss.

To combat this, there are a few tools at our disposal, beginning with over-the-counter supplements. For instance, rhubarb root extract, sold under the trade name of Estrovera®, can reduce hot flashes, one of the biggest complaints of perimenopause. This non-hormonal herbal extract has been used in Europe for more than twenty years, and has been shown in clinical studies to have results comparable to low dose hormone therapy. Other over-the-counter options include evening primrose oil and black cohosh. Additionally, cortisol, the hormone our body creates to manage stress, is often disrupted by hormonal changes, which can lead to weight gain, fatigue, and hot flashes. Adaptogenic herbs such as eleuthero, ashwaganda, and rhodiola rosea, commonly sold in combinations products like Adrenotone®, help normalize cortisol levels, and can relieve these symptoms. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a prescription option to combat the symptoms of perimenopause. This therapy is individualized, as each woman’s hormone deficiencies and imbalances are different. While one woman may need estrogen, another may have too much, and need progesterone to balance the excess. Customized properly,

HRT can make drastic improvements to quality of life. You may have heard of risks associated with HRT such as breast cancer and cardiovascular events; these can be minimized when dosages are customized by a physician and pharmacist experienced in the field of HRT. A distinction in hormone replacement therapy is non-bio-identical hormones, such as medroxyprogesterone and conjugated equine estrogens, versus bio-identical hormones like progesterone and estrogens, such as estriol and estradiol. A bio-identical hormone’s chemical structure matches the hormones already circulating in your blood; in other words, giving your body a bio-identical hormone is giving it something it expects to have. Conversely, non-bio-identical hormones vary in structure and function from natural hormones, and the body does not have receptors designed to receive them. As you might expect, medical literature and data has demonstrated that bio-identical hormones tend to be more effective and have a better safety profile than nonbio-identical hormones. While perimenopausal and menopausal issues are significant as women age, younger women experience trouble with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). While prescription drugs, such as birth control, can help, overthe-counter supplements containing herbs like chaste tree berry, wild yam root, and passionflower serve to combat PMS naturally. Pregnant women often have concerns about what constitutes a good prenatal vitamin. Look for one that is comprehensive and provides an adequate amount of folate, preferably as methlyfolate, a readily active and utilized form in the body, as compared to folic acid, which must be converted to the active form in the body, and is done so poorly in some women who have certain genetic mutations. Additionally, a good amount of DHA, an omega-3 that supports healthy brain development in your baby, is a good feature. Shoot for at least 400 to 500mg of DHA per day while pregnant or nursing. Finding the right healthcare professional is essential, particularly for issues that affect your quality of life. Compounding pharmacies such as Pine Pharmacy in Williamsville are great resources for both hormone replacement and vitamin supplementation to support women’s health from youth through the golden years.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF VEIN TREATMENTS?

Healthy veins contain valves that open and close to assist the return of blood to the heart. Veins can become varicose when the valves that control blood flow are damaged or diseased, causing blood to pool in the legs. This causes varicose veins which result in inefficient blood flow back to the heart.

Those individuals that seek treatment for their varicose veins find the treatment very worthwhile. Benefits of treatment include: • Relief of throbbing legs • Relief of heaviness • Ability to walk without struggle • Assisted healing of venous stasis ulcers Varicose veins are often raised above • Confidence to show off legs the skin on legs and can resemble twisted, bulging cords.
