Spotlight: M&T Bank supports Free Friday events BY HEATHER PRIOR

M&T Bank has a long history of supporting the Western New York community, and the organization prides itself on the many projects, events, and organizations it sponsors. With a focus on improving the quality of life here in Buffalo and its surrounding area, M&T gets behind wellness and education programming, as well as acting as underwriter for many arts-based programs. Through M&T Bank, Buffalo culturals such as the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Burchfield Penney Art Center, Buffalo Arts Studio, and Buffalo History Museum have hosted free Friday events for several years. This partnership makes cultural programming accessible to the greater community. At Albright-Knox Art Gallery, the first Friday of every month features free admission all day for everyone. Additional events are scheduled throughout the evening and include free tours, art classes, live music, and art activities for the whole family. Some of these additional events may require a small fee. The Burchfield Penney Art Center hosts its M&T Free Friday on the second

10

Friday of the month. Free gallery admission is available all day, but a variety of other events begin in the evening. Visitors experience film screenings, art classes, musical performances, activities for kids, and more. These events are offered free with membership or for a small fee. Buffalo History Museum has the third Friday of each month covered, with free admission all day. The Resource Center, located on Forest Avenue, offers free tours in the afternoon, and the main building, on Elmwood Avenue, features evening programming. Each month offers a themed event, such as a class, discussion, or other history-based programming. The fourth Friday of each month is when M&T lends its support to Buffalo Arts Studio, allowing the organization to extend its hours and allow visitors to attend at no cost. If you love Buffalo’s excellent art and history institutions, thank M&T for their longtime support of programs such as these, which make our remarkable cultural treasures available to everyone.

PHOTOS COURTESY OF LEHRER DANCE

Spotlight: LehrerDance BY REBECCA HALE

Though based in Buffalo, only three of LehrerDance’s eight members grew up in the area: Rachel Humphrey, Colleen Walsh, and Ryan Moguel. Education and outreach director and dancer Humphrey studied at the American Academy of Ballet and attended SUNY Potsdam. Dancer Walsh trained at Steppin’ Out Dance Academy, where she now teaches, and attended University at Buffalo. Moguel, also a dancer, was born in North Carolina but grew up in Buffalo, training at Clark Academy of Performing Arts. He attended the University of Arizona and also traveled to Germany for competitions, but later returned to Buffalo to join LehrerDance. OTT spoke with the three dancers to better understand what it’s like to be a professional dancer in Buffalo. OTT: What has growing up in Buffalo’s dance community been like? Humphrey: I learned quickly how loving and supportive our local community of artists is, and how willing they are to nurture young dancers. The dance community here has not only taught me technique and discipline, but also an overwhelming love for the art form. Moguel: The dance community in Buffalo is a very strong one. Although there isn’t a surplus of professional dance companies, there are a lot of amazing schools and studios that can help a young dancer get the foundations of all styles and techniques. The training I received in Buffalo allowed me to attend University of Arizona as a dance major, which helped me make the leap to being a professional in the industry.

42

Post-college, what made you decide to pursue your dance career here in WNY? Walsh: I began my career while in Buffalo for college. While at UB, I was introduced to LehrerDance and I simply fell in love with the company. Being able to work with Jon Lehrer, its founder and owner, throughout my years as an undergrad allowed me to gain the experiences and training I needed to become an asset to the company once I graduated. OTT: Was it challenging to obtain a position as a professional dancer in Buffalo? Humphrey: Getting a job in any professional dance company is not easy. There is an amazing amount of talent and competition in every city. I think LehrerDance and Buffalo were the perfect and only choice for me. Doing what I love in

a city that has helped raise me as both a dancer and person is truly one of the greatest gifts. Continuing my career anywhere else would be difficult.

OTT: Would you leave Buffalo, should another opportunity arise? Walsh: To put it simply, Buffalo always has been and always will be my home. There isn’t another opportunity that would allow me to live out my dreams without leaving my family and friends. It truly is the best of both worlds and is a blessing I never take for granted. Moguel: I’ve learned that as a dancer, you cannot have too many plans. So much of the industry is “right place, right time” situations. However, as of now I am very excited to be in Buffalo with LehrerDance, especially because Buffalo is making such a resurgence right now.

Spotlight: Preserved through history BE REBECCA HALE

Formerly Twin Cities Riviera, and often called “the Riv” today, the Riviera first opened on Dec. 30, 1926, featuring the films Upstage and The Mona Lisa. Later, during the Depression, the theater became a Shea’s location, changing its name to Shea’s Riviera. Then, in the 1960s, the theater became part of the Dipson Theatre chain and managers undertook the project of restoring the theater’s famous Wurlitzer organ. In 1970, the theater was sold again, and closed a year later, spending close to the next two decades either on the market or closed up and awaiting demolition or rehabilitation. In 1988, the Riviera was again put up for sale, PHOTO: KC KRATT and through a massive fundraising campaign, was purchased by the Niagara Frontier Theatre Organ Society. Wellrestored and home to a variety of events each year from live opera to film screenings, and concerts, the Riviera remains the only theater in the region, apart from Shea’s, that still houses its original pipe organ.
