If you want your kids to experience the fun of summer camp but are having trouble convincing them to try it, you’re not alone. Many children, even the most outgoing, are leery at the prospect of spending a week with strangers. The good news is that “no” doesn’t need to be the end of the discussion. Going to camp—day or overnight—for the first time can be scary for children (and parents) but with some careful navigation and patience, your kids can join the regulars who can’t wait to go back each summer. Start by exploring your options. There are dozens of camp programs in and around Western New York. If overnight seems too much, there are a surprising array of weeklong day options. Take Hull House in Lancaster,

which offers a weeklong history camp where fifth to seventh graders experience life in the early 1800s on a WNY homestead. Local mom Sherry Hausrath sent her daughter after visiting Hull House on a field trip. “She ended up really enjoying it and learned so much,” Hausrath says. Other camps like the YMCA’s Camp Weona and Duffield Camp (a smaller, traditional, in-the-woods camp with Presbyterian roots) offer full, weeklong overnight experiences. Pat Cookfaire-Casari, current summer program director at Camp Duffield, has been a volunteer at the camp for close to forty years. She said she has met dozens of fearful first-time campers, most of whom end up having a fabulous time and want to come back year after year. Duffield has a three-day First Timers camp for first and second graders that requires adult accompaniment from a parent or guardian. “It’s a great way for the kids to get a feel for what camp is all about,” Cookfaire-Casari says. YMCA’s Camp Weona also has a First Experience Camp for those who want a “taste of camp life.” Parents do not attend, but the camp is just three days long and is available for kids from seven to twelve. What most parents and their children find is that campers who start out kicking and screaming end up loving the experience by the time they are

done. Local mom Kristine Strible remembers when her daughter Morgan, now seventeen, went to sleepover camp for a week at eight years old. “The entire way there she was freaking out and crying,” Strible says. “I wondered if we should turn around and go home but we didn’t. We sat with her in her cabin for an hour and a half longer than all of the other campers. Her counselor eventually assured us she would be fine and so we left. We sent letters to her throughout the week and when we picked her up on Saturday, she didn’t want to come home!” Morgan ended up going back to Circle C Ranch in Delevan, New York, sfor seven more summers! One of the most comprehensive resources we found for local summer camps was the “Week-ByWeek-Guide to Summer Camps” put together by local website Kids Out and About in Buffalo. Go to buffalo.kidsoutandabout. com/content/guide-summer-camps-buffalo-ny-area to find summer camps broken down by week or searchable by zip code!

Morgan Applegate, at age 8 (her first year of camp) and then at age 15 (last year of camp). Morgan is a local high school senior who has officially gotten over her fears of camp–so much so that she is taking a gap year after graduation and heading to Africa to learn more about healthcare in third world countries.

Pediatric Urgent Care of WNY A kid-friendly alternative to the ER B Y LISA LIT T L EWO O D

About a decade ago, Dr. Kathy Grisanti was working as director of the emergency department at Women and Children’s Hospital in Buffalo when she had the idea for alternative pediatric urgent care. “We were seeing a lot of families come through the ER who didn’t necessarily need emergency room care but there was no good alternative,” says the mom of five, who has thirty years of pediatric experience. “I started thinking there must be a better, more comfortable way.”

That idea evolved into Pediatric Urgent Care of Western New York, of which Grisanti is both owner and doctor on staff. There are two locations— Williamsville and Orchard Park, both open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week—and it is the only area urgent care facility that focuses solely on children. Grisanti recently opened a location in Rochester, the first pediatric urgent care there, as well. While many of the alternative local care facilities claim to offer medical care for all ages, Grisanti says pediatrics is a specialized field that deserves specialized care. “What is different about us is that we always have a pediatrician and a pediatric nurse on staff,” Grisanti explains. “A lot of urgent care facilities are moving away from even having a doctor on staff at all times. Our x-rays are also read by a pediatric radiologist. If you’re not used to reading about bones or chest x-rays in children, it can make a difference. We always make a big note to say children are not just small adults; they are different and have different physiologies. We really

try to create a comfortable environment for the kids.” When deciding whether or not to choose urgent care, consult your pediatrician first, if their office is open. Some situations—broken bones or need for sutures—are better handled at Urgent Care, where x-rays and stitching can be done onsite, which streamlines the care and minimizes the number of appointments necessary. For after-hours accident or illness, pediatric urgent care is likely your best option. When you take children to the ER, wait times can be long because hospitals need to triage, and ambulance arrivals and other high-needs situations can take priority. “We try to make it an alternative to the ER,” Grisanti says. “We have bedroom style rooms, where patients can lay down, get IV fluids, and be monitored for longer periods of time.” Urgent Care can also do x-rays and sutures on site, which is often less traumatic for children because they have made the rooms and facilities so comfortable and kid friendly.
