Dear Friends and Partners, This is the twentieth anniversary edition of the Buffalo Tours brochure, and as I sit down to write the introduction I am reminded of the company’s origins and the incredible journey we have taken as a business to get to where we are today. I’d like to share with you the story of our birth and I hope it will explain a little about what we stand for twenty years on... As a young man in Hanoi, I took a job with a small hotel to help make ends meet while I was preparing for my exams at medical school. I slept under the reception counter and did all kinds of odd jobs at the hotel, including cleaning the rooms and dealing with the customers. I made a little less than twenty US dollars a month. One day, the hotel owner noticed that I spoke a little French and asked if I would accompany a visiting Belgian couple on a tour around Hanoi and the neighboring provinces. It sounded better than cleaning rooms and I jumped at the opportunity. On the tour, I was immediately struck by how genuinely fascinated the couple were with me, my life in Vietnam and the culture of my city and my country. We talked and talked throughout the two day tour, and at the end of it they rewarded me with a very generous tip - more than a month’s wages at the hotel! I immediately knew what to do and set about finding more visitors to escort around Hanoi, and so my small tour company was created. Nowadays, we employ 270 guides and drivers who accompany our guests on my behalf, and a great many support staff to deliver a professional service and I try to instill in all of them that same sense of pride and satisfaction that I had when I led my first tour and shared my personal knowledge and experience all those years ago. At Buffalo Tours, we believe that visitors who come to Asia make a genuine, lasting connection with our people and cultures and that it is our role to facilitate, encourage and share in those encounters. Each visitor to Asia takes away their own unique experiences - a shared cup of tea on a riverbank, a chat with a farmer in a rice field while on a bike trip or a playful bargaining session at a local market. Every trip we organise for guests is different and each one has the potential to create lifelong memories for the traveller. We are delighted to have been a part of creating those memories for the last twenty years as our business has grown and we are looking forward to continuing to represent our destinations with pride. We are always conscious of the fragility of the cultural and natural environments we visit and we pledge to protect them for generations to come. WHEN TO VISIT Vietnam’s elongated shape includes tropical and subtropical zones and is the reason for the country’s varied climate.
THE NORTH Summer in the north lasts from May to October when temperatures range between 30oC - 35oC with high humidity and bursts of heavy rain. The temperature varies from 10oC - 15oC in winter (December to March). February and March can be damp with drizzle and overcast skies.

As one of the most cultural and captivating cities in Asia, you could easily spend a few days wandering the maze of streets that make up the Old Quarter. Take in the city’s French colonial past, still evident in the faded buildings, cafe and coffee culture, and fresh baguettes sold on the streets. Enjoy visits to the Temple of Literature, the history museum and the must-see traditional water puppet show.
Hoi An, an ancient fishing port on the central Vietnamese coast is well known for its quaint restored buildings, tailors and cuisine. Discover this UNESCO World Heritage Listed town with a walking tour through the enchanting streets, explore the picturesque countryside by bicycle or simply laze on the beach.
NORTHERN VIETNAM With stunning mountain landscapes, northern Vietnam provides the opportunity to combine adventure and cultural activities. Trek through ethnic minority villages, explore the beautiful town of Sapa nestled up in the hills with a cool climate and breath-taking views, and spend a few days in Mai Chau an idyllic village hidden in a valley between cliffs and rice paddies.
HALONG BAY AND CAT BA Halong Bay is as mystical as it is majestic, with cultural, historical and geological uniqueness. Kayak in secluded lagoons surrounded by limestone cliffs or explore Cat Ba, one of the few inhabited islands, which is filled with lakes, waterfalls and fishing villages. 10
For most of the year Nha Trang is bathed in beautiful sunshine. However, between November and December the area has heavy rain. Dalat, at an altitude of 1,500m is cooler than the coastal areas, particularly from November through to March. Danang, Hoi An and Hue experience typhoon activity from mid-October to mid-December when the climate becomes cooler, more overcast and wetter.
THE SOUTH The south is hot year round and has two seasons; one wet and the other dry. The wet season lasts from May to October and you can expect daily downpours. These are usually brief and easy to predict. The dry season from November to April is generally sunny and humid.
SOUTHERN BEACHES The beach options in southern Vietnam have something for everyone, with stretches of deserted coast, hidden bays and clear warm waters. With a large range of water sports and activities from kite surfing to scuba diving, and world-class resorts or simple beach bungalows to suit all budgets, you won’t want to leave.
CAU NGU FESTIVAL A significant event is celebrated in January, along the coast of Central Vietnam, called the Cau Ngu festival - the fisherman’s festival. Alongside traditional rituals to encourage plentiful fish and favourable weather, visitor friendly contests and ceremonies take place in the form of tug-of-war, boat racing and fishing games.
HOI AN FULL MOON FESTIVAL Every month on the 14th day of the lunar cycle, the locals of Hoi An turn off the electricity and line the streets with candles and brightly coloured lanterns. The streets are filled with music, dancing, theatre and poetry. Wandering the streets is a simple, yet wonderful way to spend the evening and to immerse yourself into the culture.

MEKONG DELTA The rich and diverse landscape of the Mekong Delta not only provides Vietnam with surplus rice supplies, but also offers an exciting addition to travellers’ adventures in the country. TẾT or Vietnamese New Year is the biggest and most popular festival celebrated according to the lunar calendar in either late January or early February. It is a time where city workers return to their home towns and families reunite. Celebrations can last up to a week and sometimes longer! FESTIVALS & EVENTS THE ELEPHANT FESTIVAL Laos a ‘land of a million elephants’. Each February in Sayaboury province, watch as more than 50 elephants along with their mahouts take part in a colourful procession through the streets and give demonstrations in elephant handling. This colourful festival helps to raise awareness of the plight of Asian elephants and features fun fairs, monk blessings and more. It’s not to be missed!
WHEN TO VISIT Laos has a tropical monsoon climate with two distinct seasons, May to October is the rainy season and November to April is the dry season. Boun Pi Mai is the traditional greeting to say happy New Year, a highlight on the Buddhist calendar and celebrated over three days in April. It is a time for cleaning and renewal and to pay respects to family and elders. Buddha statues are washed and the water is collected and sprinkled over people for good luck. Nowadays, hundreds take to the streets in a huge water fight where even the monks get in on the action!
FIREBOAT FESTIVAL The Fireboat Festival is held on the day of the full moon in October. Throughout the country people launch small, candle lit banana-leaf boats on the rivers with offerings of incense and small amounts of money to bring luck and prosperity. In Luang Prabang, a fantastic fire boat procession takes place on the main street to the Royal Temple of Xiengthong. The best way to see it is over dinner on the Mekong, watching the boats gliding past.

FESTIVALS & EVENTS BON CHOL CHHNAM THMEI Bon Chol Chhnam Thmei or Khmer New Year is celebrated on 13th of April each year according to the lunar calendar. Over the course of three days, homes are decorated, shrines are filled with offerings to ancestors and Buddha, and traditional games are played. It is an exciting time be in the country! Please note that some government buildings and tourist sites may be closed during this period.
ANGKOR WAT INTERNATIONAL HALF MARATHON In December, the International Half Marathon is held in Siem Reap. Thousands of runners from more than 40 countries line up each year to compete and race the circuit through the famed temples of Angkor to raise funds for charitable causes.

Considered to be the ‘jewel in the crown’ during the days of Indochina, Phnom Penh is a city with a story to tell. With faded French and art-deco architecture, palaces and pagodas this beautiful city fell during the turbulent Khmer Rouge years. Although traces to the past remain an exciting city has now emerged, complete with a contemporary art and music scene, fine restaurants and vibrant nightlife that are on par with bigger Asian cities. SIEM REAP Once a sleepy provincial town, Siem Reap is fast becoming one of the top, must-see destinations. The centre point of town is the old market with its labyrinth of laneways filled with day spas, boutiques, galleries and artisanal handicraft stores. After dark it’s the place to be with cafes, bars and an upmarket restaurant scene. Not only is Siem Reap the gateway to the majestic temples of Angkor, but the ecological marvel of the Tonle Sap Lake and one of the largest natural bird sanctuaries in Southeast Asia.

Sihanoukville with its long stretches of sandy white beach is a favourite getaway for locals and tourists alike. There are many small islands that dot the coastline ideal for snorkelling, fishing and secluded beaches. In the 1960s, Kep was a popular spot for the Khmer royal family and the jet-set crowd. Nowadays, this small stone beach with a jungle backdrop is becoming fashionable once again with boutique resorts and guesthouses.

An ideal time to visit Cambodia is in the months of November to March, during the cool, dry season. Temperatures rise in April and May and can reach up to 40oC. The monsoon rains commence from June to October turning the dry landscape lush and green, perfect for photos.
The Giant Puppet Parade held in February is the highlight of the social calendar in Siem Reap. Children from local schools, NGOs and street kid organisations participate in workshops to create and build giant puppets that vary in size from 10 - 30m. The parade begins in the centre of town and continues along the river, finishing near the Royal Gardens.
ANGKOR PHOTO FESTIVAL Founded in 2005 by a group of international photographers who wanted to give back to the community, the festival is growing stronger each year. The week long festival in November includes workshops, free exhibitions and slideshows, and attracts professional photographers from all over the world.
BON OM TUK OR WATER FESTIVAL This is one of the most important festivals in the Khmer calendar where water from the Mekong River reverses and empties into the Tonle Sap Lake. It is a lively time to be in Phnom Penh where dragon boat racing is the highlight of a three day event.
NORTH EAST The remote north east is a largely forgotten part of Cambodia but well worth a visit. In the farthest corners are the provinces of Rattanakiri and Mondulkiri, renowned for their unique natural beauty, minority hill tribes and rare gem stones. 47

WHEN TO VISIT Thailand has a tropical monsoon climate with two distinct seasons. May to October is the rainy season and November to April is the dry season. It gets hottest in March and April when temperatures can reach as high as 38oC. The lowest temperatures, usually in December are around 15oC. The average temperature is between 25oC and 30oC.
FESTIVALS & EVENTS SONGKRAN Songkran or Thai New Year, is the most important festival in the country. It is a time to pay respects to family and elders, for cleaning and renewal, where Buddha statues are washed and the water is collected and sprinkled over people for good luck. In Chiang Mai thousands take to the streets in a huge water fight lasting three days. There is no escape - even the monks are packing water pistols!
BAMBOO ROCKET FESTIVAL Rocket festivals have been part of the culture of Isaan for centuries where local farmers believe they can improve the chance of rain by firing rockets into the clouds. The best place to see this is in Yasathon in May, where teams from around the province compete to make bamboo rockets and launch them at a festival full of fun and merit making.

WHEN TO VISIT The best time to travel in Myanmar is from October to February during the cool season, where the temperature hovers at a pleasant 24oC. The hot, dry season is from March to the middle of May and can reach up to 35oC, with the central and upper areas of Myanmar being the hottest, reaching temperatures up to 45oC. Mid May to mid October heralds the start of the green season as the rains fall turning everything lush. It’s usually wetter in the south with temperatures in the late 20s.

ANANDA PAGODA FESTIVAL The Ananda Pagoda is the most revered pagoda in Bagan and every January there is a two week festival where locals and pilgrims come from afar to pay their respects. The most important day for devotees is on the full moon, when the carnival atmosphere reaches its peak. It’s a great time to truly experience both local lifestyle and Buddhist traditions.
THING YAN Thing Yan is Myanmar’s new year and is without doubt the biggest nationwide celebration. The festival lasts up to five days in April and the main activity is pouring, but especially splashing, water at each other. The exact date is based on the lunar calendar and normally falls in the middle of the month. The water throwing symbolises the washing away of sins and gaining good luck. Families will go to the temples to pray together, but more notably the streets are filled with revellers throwing buckets of water and dousing each other with ice water. Join in the fun and catch some of that good luck they are dishing out!
HOT AIR BALLOON FESTIVAL Every November for three days the skies above Taungyi, home to Pa-O tribe, are filled with hot air balloons. The balloons are released as an offering to Cetiya in Tavitisma, one of the heavens in Buddhist cosmology. Return to Hanoi and fly to Danang. Then drive about 40 minutes to Hoi An, a restored 15th century fishing village, a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site. Unlike many destinations in Vietnam, Hoi An has pedestrian streets that are ideal for leisurely strolling. The food here is particularly good especially the tasty soup and noodle dishes. Introduce your kids to life on the land and hands-on fun while in Hoi An. Take a bike ride along green rice paddies to a small village and join the farmers in the fields. Roll up your sleeves, or get knee deep in mud to help the farmers with their daily chores. Then head back to town and meet the fisherman along the river to learn how to throw a net and paddle a bamboo basket boat. Hoi An is famous for its brightly coloured lanterns lighting up the streets and the kids can create their own in a lantern-making workshop. See the beautiful reef fish with a snorkeling trip to Cham Island and relax on the beach to work on your tan!

Fly to Ho Chi Minh City and explore the bustling city streets and markets at your own pace. The city, formerly called Saigon, reflects the pulse of a changing Vietnam. Trendy cocktail lounges are found alongside ramshackle noodle stands, and Rolls Royce cars share the road with hundreds of scooters whizzing past! Go by speedboat along the Saigon River to the Cu Chi Tunnels, an underground network that housed thousands of Viet Cong soldiers during the Vietnam War. The kids will love crawling through the tunnels and climbing on top of an old bombed out tank! The tunnels also contained supply routes, hospitals and munitions dumps, and figured prominently in the 1968 Tet Offensive. Take in a bit more history with a trip to the Reunification Palace and the War Remnants Museum, which is childfriendly, however it does contain some graphic images.

You might even see wild elephants! Visit the Ban Prasart archaeological excavation site in Korat and let your kids become the next Indiana Jones! Set up as an outdoor museum, it consists of three pits that have been landscaped and are open to the public. Bones and pots have been found dating the site as far back as 3,000 years. Then head back to your nest in Bangkok arriving late in the afternoon.

Fly to Vientiane the sleepy Lao capital. Take a short city tour starting at Wat Sisaket Vientiane’s oldest-surviving monastery, where the kids will marvel at the thousands of Buddha statues. Learn the interesting history of the Hor Pha Ke museum and admire the golden stupa of Pha That Luang the national symbol of Laos. Then, climb up to the top of Patouxai for great views of the city. For a fun day out for the kids, spend a couple of hours at Buddha Park exploring the weird, wonderful and quirky statues. The park is the folly of Luang Pu Bunleua Sulilat, a monk, shaman and mystic of Hinduism and Buddhism. The beaches of Vietnam’s central coastal region of Hoi An, are the most well-known and stretch 30km from Danang to Hoi An. The eponymous China Beach with its arc of fine white sand and legacy of R&R for US soldiers during the Vietnam War is popular with surfers during the months of November to February when the waves are at their biggest. Cua Dai is the main tourist beach for Hoi An, where beachside resorts dominate the coastline.
With 7km of golden beaches, Nha Trang is the premier beach resort destination in Vietnam. Aside from a lovely beach, greater Nha Trang has islands where you can snorkel and scuba dive in search of tropical fish and coral. Back in town, enjoy the cafe culture waterside or relax in one of the many spas or mud baths!
This charming seaside coastal town Mui Ne has gone from a small fishing village to Vietnam’s hotspot for wind and kite surfing. From October to April the strong winds provide the perfect conditions for these types of adrenaline sports. The region is also known for its huge sand dunes that are popular for jeep safaris. Go a little farther up the coast and reach Phan Thiet, quieter than its neighbour Mue Ne, but still as nice.
This stunningly beautiful archipelago has been designated a marine protected area and is the finest location for diving and snorkelling in Vietnam. The pristine reefs are home to a variety of marine life including colouful fish and dugongs that are similar to manatees. Back on land the islands are covered with hidden lagoons, thick forests ideal for hiking and stretches of deserted beaches. The best time to visit the islands for scuba diving is March to July when the seas are calmest.
Ho Tram is a short jaunt from Ho Chi Minh City making it a popular local weekend getaway. The largely undeveloped coastline gives the region a relaxed appeal with unspoiled waters and a wide sandy beach. Just up the road you will find Binh Chau Hot Springs, famous for its relaxing mud baths and curative hot mineral springs.
Known for its fish sauce, this beautiful island is one of the least populated islands in Vietnam. Bordering with Cambodia, the island is fringed with white-sand beaches and tropical jungle terrain, with perfect weather year-round!

The remote northern Thailand village of Ban Maeramit Luang has three teachers that work on a rotating basis to teach 77 ethnic minority students. Most of the adolescent girls who come to school are pregnant or have young children to care for. Our project focuses on nutrition, hygiene and maternal child healthcare. We are currently building toilets, additional class rooms and a nursery.
The district of Chansor is classified as one of the most disadvantaged in Cambodia. More than 350 students from 19 villages attend Chansor Senior High School, which consists of one building with six class rooms and two toilet blocks. The project goal is to construct a new school library building to improve and aid the quality of learning.
LAOS Children in isolated areas of Laos, often have little or no access to education due to the long distances that need to be travelled. In Pak Xeng District the Sop Jak project was implemented to construct a safe, clean and comfortable class rooms and a dormitory for students from surrounding villages. While this helps to relieve some of the most pressing conditions it does not solve the problem. More classrooms and dormitory space are urgently needed.

VIETNAM In the remote mountain regions of northern Vietnam and down south in the Mekong Delta, access to education and basic health services is minimal.
