Letter from Head of School

In 2021-22, we learned and celebrated together with a renewed appreciation for the things that make SEM extraordinary. At SEM, we value both tradition and innovation, and this year we leaned more than ever on our traditions and long-held values to move us forward and unite our community. Adaptability, innovation, and resiliency were necessary skills during the pandemic years, and helped inform our decisions, as we decided that consistency, routine, and joy would be the focus of the year.
We resumed our traditional Hornet/ Jacket activities and community building projects. Our class trips started the year with outdoor adventures and fun. The seniors conquered the ropes course at Holiday Valley, our juniors spent four days canoeing and trekking at Camp Pathfinder, the sophomores navigated around Letchworth State Park, and our first-year students paddled the Buffalo River. It felt great to start the year with the familiar trips of past years and the fun, laughter and excitement of Hornet Jacket Day.
Academically, we returned to our Harkness tables with everyone at the table together. Discussion was lively, students were engaged, and our faculty had more time to provide the individual attention for which SEM is known. Our actors returned to the stage, our athletes to the field, and our students re-engaged with the Buffalo community through numerous community service projects. In addition, we were able to address the rising concerns regarding adolescent health and wellness by adjusting our
daily schedule to allow more time for our small-group advisor meetings. We added more passing time between classes to create a less frantic pace, and in our health/wellness curriculum, we added more opportunities to learn time management and mindfulness. The year culminated with the return of the entire SEM community to Westminster Church to celebrate SEM’s 171st commencement and honor the remarkable class of 2022. It was the perfect ending to the year of celebrating our traditions and living our values.
Some question the relevance of girls’ schools in 2022. I contend that this relevance is as important as ever. The best antidote in uncertain times is SEM. The knowingness that students will support and challenge one another as they pursue their
dreams, learn how to lead others, and begin their journey of making a difference in the world. The faculty challenges students to push themselves further year after year; all the while, they stand at the ready to provide guidance and encouragement to allow our girls to achieve new heights.
Thank you for your enduring spirit and your generous financial support. You make a difference at SEM, and allow us to continue to create the magic of a SEM education and community we all so heavily relied on during these times.

The Head’s Council on Alumnae Engagement (HCAE) was established in June 2017 as a leadership team to support SEM’s Head of School and set broad direction for transitioning the Buffalo Seminary Alumnae Association (BSAA) to a new organizational model with national and international focus.
HCAE Vision Statement
Building on the friendships and shared experiences of the unique all-girls education that SEM provides, the vision of the HCAE is to strengthen connections between the school and her alumnae, and to cultivate contacts and community among alumnae living “Far from thy shelt’ring arm.” The ties that unite us are not limited by time or place.
Mission Statement
Led by a team of alumnae representing a broad range of classes and geographic regions, the mission of the HCAE is to maintain our connection to one another and the school for personal and professional fulfillment, and to advance the mission and reputation of SEM. We are committed to fostering and maintaining the sense of community and support that we cherish from our time at SEM.
In support of this mission, the HCAE undertakes to:
• Communicate to all alumnae SEM’s desire to engage with alumnae beyond their traditional WNY base and announce opportunities to connect with the school and with other alumnae for socializing, networking, and learning about current goings-on at SEM
• Establish new chapters of the BSAA in cities and regions beyond WNY by organizing social or educational gatherings to bring alumnae together, and identifying and encouraging local alumnae leaders to further develop connections and community in their area
• Serve as a resource and catalyst for individual alumnae to build personal and professional connections and conversations with alumnae in their community or in areas of career or personal interest
• At the request of the Head of School, provide advice and perspective on matters affecting SEM’s mission, vision, values, and traditions

Giving Explained
What is the difference between SEM’s Annual Fund and other giving?
SEM’s annual fund is vital to SEM’s operating budget, as tuition alone does not cover our school’s expenses –typical for independent schools everywhere.
8-10% of our expenses are covered each year by annual fund gifts, and that support is essential to fund SEM’s teaching and learning opportunities, our financial aid, and our campus.
SEM’s annual fund starts on July 1 and ends on June 30 every year and includes support from alumnae, parents, grandparents, faculty, trustees, parents of alumnae, former faculty, and friends of SEM. There are a number of levels of giving as indicated in this report.
What role does SEM’s Endowment play?
SEM’s endowment is a permanent investment that provides annual support to SEM. It consists of over 50 named funds supporting donor individual interests in scholarship, SEM’s faculty, SEM’s programs, or the school’s greatest needs (also referred to as “unrestricted” endowment). These funds are invested in perpetuity to benefit SEM by generating earned income to contribute to our operating budget. SEM’s total endowment as of June 30, 2022, stands at $9,718,985.
Growing SEM’s endowment builds a stronger and more stable financial base for future generations.
What is Planned Giving?
At SEM, being a planned giving donor makes you a member of the Elm Legacy Society. Planning ahead for a future gift allows individuals and families - through bequests, trusts, retirement funds, life insurance, real estate, and other estate planning instruments – to provide for SEM’s future and to achieve charitable goals including lowering capital gains and other taxes.
Joining the Elm Legacy Society is one of the best ways to provide a lasting legacy that will benefit future generations of SEM students, SEM faculty, and the quality of the school’s programs and learning environments. And of course, planned giving lets you establish your legacy, whether you decide to recognize your class, parents, spouse, family, or yourself in making a bequest to SEM.

SEM’s endowed funds provide essential support to our operating budget and have meaningful impact in scholarships, faculty development and our program offerings. If you would like to direct your gift to endowment, you can designate it to our general endowment or any of these funds.

2008 Sofia Grace Hoover and Claire E. Martoche ’91 MemorialScholarship
Awarded to an incoming freshman who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in academics and extracurricular activities. This scholarship honors the memory of Sofia Grace Hoover, daughter of Hon. Amy C. Martoche ’88 and her husband Timothy W. Hoover, Esq., and the memory of Claire E. Martoche ’91, daughter of Hon. Salvatore R. and Mrs. Mary Dee Martoche. One of the expectations to receive a SEM diploma is service to the greater community.

SEMDay
Our 9th annual SEMDay took place on May 3, 2022. This one-day fundraising campaign celebrated teacher appreciation week by raising unrestricted funds to support our remarkable faculty. Spurred on by social media posts and email updates throughout the day, the SEM community came together, and 210 donors raised $40,951! Thank you for helping us recognize SEM’s teachers, past and present, and to celebrate the power of our SEM community.
Early Bird Challenge
Alumna Ellen S. Goldstein ’70 got the SEMDay ball rolling with a special $1,000 early bird challenge. Early bird donors helped us raise over $2,000 before SEMDay officially began.
Participation Challenge
An anonymous donor issued a $5,000 challenge to help us reach our participation goal of 205 donors. By the end of the day, 210 donors helped to unlock the participation challenge, earning an additional $5,000 for SEM programs. We are grateful to our anonymous challenge donor for inspiring so many others to give on SEMDay!
Hornet/Jacket Challenges
Jacket parents and grandparents earned a $2,500 match from Mike Collins, Kathleen O’Leary and Nora Collins ’22, and the Hornets earned an additional $2,500 from an anonymous SEM Hornet family. The Hornets won the day, but the real winners were SEM students and faculty.

Buffalo Seminary was proud to participate in the ninth annual #GivingTuesday, a global celebration of philanthropy fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. On November 30, 2021, the SEM community rallied to raise funds to purchase a new SEM bus. Our buses safely transport students to and from community service initiatives, residential activities, field trips to local cultural institutions, and athletic competitions.
Two SEM families stepped up to support the Fund-A-Bus Campaign with generous $5,000 matching gifts. Thank you Cindy, Elad and Lauren ’22 Levy, and Josephine, Adnan and Fatima ’17 Siddiqui, for leading the charge! By the end of #GivingTuesday, 93 donors raised $40,145 toward a brand new SEM bus. Your collective generosity will benefit SEM students for years to come!

She doesn’t have to be from Buffalo anymore… Because whether she’s from around the block or around the world – Buffalo Seminary has a place for her in our 5- or 7-day boarding in the beautiful historic homes next door to the school. We are grateful for the generosity of the families and organizations that believe access to a SEM education can change a girl’s life, and the lives of those around her, and we want to remind you that in 2017 a Legacy Scholarship was created for residential girls referred by a graduate, trustee of the school, or SEM family. The purpose of this scholarship is to build our SEM community with talented young women who have a connection to the school.
