ON BEHALF OF OUR STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND STAFF, I THANK YOU FOR MAKING A REAL DIFFERENCE IN OUR LIVES.

Marlette

1

The 2020-21 school year brought out the best in SEM. I am awed by the generosity of our community and deeply thankful.

Letter from Head of School

WE PULLED TOGETHER AND SHAPED A YEAR THAT, ON THE SURFACE, BROUGHT NEW CHALLENGES, BUT REMAINED ROOTED IN OUR VALUES.

I invite you to campus to meet our students and faculty and see for yourself how your support makes a profound impact on life at SemperSEM.

In our classrooms or from their homes, our students were privileged to be taught by our exceptional faculty. Our teachers creatively adapted their teaching to the technology and new routines ensuring that our girls felt connected and challenged. Our students rose to meet the circumstances as well. They studied, competed, performed, and created with continued passion, spirit, and goodwill.

THEY EXEMPLIFIED OUR VERY MISSION, WHICH STATES THAT WE PREPARE STUDENTS WHO “ARE PROUD TO SHAPE SOCIETY RATHER THAN BE CONTROLLED BY IT.”

HelenFidelis,L.

This 2020-21 year provided the chance for our community to demonstrate its resilience and creativity. SEM is strong because of your commitment and generosity to the school. We emerged from the 2020-21 school year with a more robust financial picture than anticipated. The support and loyalty of parents, grandparents, alumnae, trustees, and friends of the school enabled us to open our doors safely and provide the exceptional education and care for our students for which SEM is known.

Ashley Morlock

Mission Statement

M. Julianna Glauser Jordan ’05

Growing SEM’s endowment builds a stronger and more stable financial base for future generations.

What is the difference between SEM’s Annual Fund and other giving?

SEM’s annual fund is vital to SEM’s operating budget, as tuition alone does not cover our school’s expenses –typical for independent schools everywhere. 8-10% of our expenses are covered each year by annual fund gifts, and that support is essential to fund SEM’s teaching and learning opportunities, our financial aid, and our campus.

What is Planned Giving?

At SEM, being a planned giving donor makes you a member of the Elm Legacy Society. Planning ahead for a future gift allows individuals and families - through bequests, trusts, retirement funds, life insurance, real estate, and other estate planning instruments – to provide for SEM’s future and to achieve charitable goals including lowering capital gains and other taxes.

Giving Explained

Joining the Elm Legacy Society is one of the best ways to provide a lasting legacy that will benefit future generations of SEM students, SEM faculty, and the quality of the school’s programs and learning environments. And of course, planned giving lets you establish your legacy, whether you decide to recognize your class, parents, spouse, family, or yourself in making a bequest to SEM.

3

What role does SEM’s Endowment play?

SEM’s endowment is a permanent investment that provides annual support to SEM. It consists of over 50 named funds supporting donor individual interests in scholarship, SEM’s faculty, SEM’s programs, or the school’s greatest needs (also referred to as “unrestricted” endowment). These funds are invested in perpetuity to benefit SEM by generating earned income to contribute to our operating budget. SEM’s total endowment as of June 30, 2021, stands at $10,766,696.59.

SEM’s annual fund starts on July 1 and ends on June 30 every year and includes support from alumnae, parents, faculty, trustees, parents of alumnae, former faculty, and friends of SEM. Both faculty and trustee support of the Annual Fund has been 100% most years. There are a number of levels of giving as indicated in this report.

While the formal expectation ends at graduation, the following alumnae continue to give generously in the same spirit that was so important then and still is today. Support from alumnae is a wonderful gesture of thanks and commitment to SEM’s mission.

One of the expectations to receive a SEM diploma is service to the greater community.

Step Up for ChallengeAppreciationTeacherWeek

Marritje VanArsdale Greene ’69

An anonymous donor issued a $5,000 challenge to help us reach our participation goal of 170 donors - one donor for each year of excellence in education at SEM. By the end of the day, 255 donors helped to unlock the Participation Challenge, earning an additional $5,000 for SEM programs. We are grateful to our anonymous challenge donors for inspiring so many others to give on SEMDay!

Molly O’Connor Greene ’98 Alex and Jennifer Gress

Our 8th annual SEMDay took place on May 4, 2021. This one-day fundraising campaign celebrated teacher appreciation week by raising unrestricted funds to support our remarkable faculty. Spurred on by social media posts and email updates throughout the day, the SEM community came together in record numbers, and 255 donors raised $62,229.88!

SEMDay

Catherine Earle

We CRUSHED our Step Up for Teacher Appreciation Week Challenge, raising over $10,000 in new or increased SEMDay gifts and unlocking an additional $10,000 gift from an anonymous alumna. Thank you for stepping up your commitment to SEM and recognizing our faculty and staff in such a meaningful and generous way.

On December 1, 2020 the SEM community participated in #GivingTuesday, a 24-hour global fundraiser. This global generosity movement takes place the Tuesday after Thanksgiving each year, benefiting charities and not-for-profit organizations around the world. Globally, an estimated 34.8 million people made a donation on #GivingTuesday! An incredible 88 donors raised $24,083 for SEM in 24 hours, doubling our 2019 participation and nearly tripling our total dollars raised. Thank you for your impact!

We are grateful to all who help to ensure the SEM experience for our girls. SEM’s future grows stronger each time we welcome a new member to our Elm Legacy Society. Gifts of all sizes benefit future generations of students, faculty, and school leadership while offering tax advantages to donors and their heirs.

Do you know a girl who would be a great SEM girl? A great Hornet or Jacket? She doesn’t have to be from Buffalo anymore… Because whether she’s from around the block or around the world – Buffalo Seminary has a place for her in our 5- or 7-day boarding in the beautiful historic homes next door to the school. We are grateful for the generosity of the families and organizations that believe access to a SEM education can change a girl’s life, and the lives of those around her, and we want to remind you that in 2017 a Legacy Scholarship was created for residential girls referred by a graduate, trustee of the school, or SEM family. The purpose of this scholarship is to build our SEM community with talented young women who have a connection to the school.
